The third-person feature is documented in GoldenEye 007 Plus, but its current public material describes a source build—not a ready-to-install PC package. To build it, you need a legally obtained, unmodified NTSC-U copy of the original Nintendo 64 game. The available project documentation does not confirm a turnkey installation route or compatibility with a particular emulator or native PC port.
Which project adds third-person play?
GoldenEye 007 Plus is the fan-made modification that documents third-person gameplay, an adjustable camera, and crosshair tuning. Its source notes also discuss work on aiming visibility, projectile alignment, and transitions back to cutscenes, so those systems should not be assumed to be uniformly finished. The project describes its code as based on the decompiled game source; its public snapshot is an R22-derived development tree with an internal checkpoint dated September 28, 2026. That feature is not documented as part of the separate native GoldenEye 007 PC port or GoldenEye: Source. GoldenEye: Source is a different multiplayer project built with the Source SDK, not a way to play the original N64 campaign with the Plus camera. GoldenEye: Source FAQ
What you need before trying to build it
- A legally obtained, unmodified NTSC-U ROM. The Plus build notes require the original US-region game image named
baserom.u.z64. A helper script checks the expected retail SHA-1 before extracting or building. The repository does not include the ROM. GoldenEye 007 Plus README Build instructions - The project source and its build setup. Follow the repository’s current instructions for build settings and helper scripts. The public material is aimed at building from source, not at installing a prebuilt Windows package through a beginner-friendly wizard.
- An emulator for testing the build, if following the documented configuration. The README names Project64 with the GLideN64 graphics plugin as a testing configuration. This is a testing note, not a guarantee that every build or setup works.
Do not download a ROM from an unofficial site as a shortcut. The project’s instructions require a user-supplied original game image; they do not authorize or provide a replacement for it.
#1 Best Overall
- This authentic renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only.
- It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- This game is an authentic copy.
How to approach the source-build route
The project documents a source build, but the available instructions do not establish a complete, verified end-user sequence for every Windows PC. Use the repository’s own current README rather than assuming that a binary from another GoldenEye project is interchangeable.
- Obtain the required game image lawfully. Use an unmodified NTSC-U ROM and name it
baserom.u.z64, as the build notes specify. The build helper verifies the expected retail hash; a different region, altered ROM, or differently formatted image may not pass that check. - Get GoldenEye 007 Plus source. Use the project repository’s build instructions for the required tools, settings, and helper script. Do not treat the source repository itself as a ready-to-run installer.
- Build according to the README. Let the project’s checks and extraction/build steps report whether the ROM is recognized and the source compiles. The documentation supplied does not establish a single prebuilt output or a universal installation path for current PCs.
- Test only with a clearly identified emulator setup. Project64 plus GLideN64 is the configuration named for testing. A successful build or launch on one setup would not by itself establish support for all emulator versions, graphics plugins, or hardware.
How the available PC options differ
| Project or route | What it is documented to do | ROM and release notes | Is Plus third-person compatibility established? |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoldenEye 007 Plus | Decompilation-based mod with third-person gameplay and adjustable camera and crosshair settings. | Source build; requires an unmodified NTSC-U ROM named baserom.u.z64. The repository does not distribute the game. |
This is the project documenting the feature, but the material does not confirm a beginner-ready PC installer or a supported emulator combination. |
| 1964 GEPD Edition | A separate emulator build modified for GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, and ROM hacks. | Its repository was archived on September 1, 2026. Releases include emulator bundles, including a Steam Deck bundle, and exclude ROM files. | Not confirmed for the current Plus source snapshot. Project repository Releases |
| GoldenEye 007 PC Port | A separate native port of the original N64 game. Its v0.4.0 README documents Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck, and describes mouse and keyboard, controller, widescreen, and a 60 fps campaign. | Requires the user to provide a supported US NTSC ROM. | No. Its documentation does not list the Plus third-person camera as a feature. PC port README |
| DesktopGoldenEye | A Windows launcher built around 1964 GEPD. | Its v0.1 documentation requires an unmodified US ROM and says a public mod loader is not yet included. | No verified Plus installation route is documented. DesktopGoldenEye documentation |
The projects serve different purposes: Plus documents the camera mod as source code; 1964 GEPD is a separate emulator; the PC port is a native version of the original game; and DesktopGoldenEye is a launcher. Installing one does not establish that another project’s feature or mod will work in it.

Troubleshooting a black world in the documented test setup
The Plus README warns that graphics-plugin settings can produce a black-world symptom that is separate from a game-code regression. For the named Project64 and GLideN64 testing configuration, the documented diagnostic is to set Force depth buffer clear = ON in the graphics-plugin settings. That setting may help diagnose this specific rendering issue; it is not proof that the current development snapshot has been validated across end-user systems.

If you need a straightforward download-and-play PC version, the available Plus documentation does not establish that path for the third-person mod. The native PC port may provide a separate way to play the original game on Windows or Linux, but it does not document the Plus camera. Likewise, the 1964 GEPD bundles are not confirmed as compatible with the current Plus source snapshot. Treat those as distinct projects rather than substitutes for a verified Plus build.
