How to Play Ghost of Tsushima: Legends With Friends

To play Ghost of Tsushima: Legends with friends, open Legends from the game’s main menu or pause menu, then invite them through the in-game Social or PlayStation Network friend system. On PC, use Enter Legends Mode → Social → select a PlayStation friend → Send Invite. PC, PS4 and PS5 can play together when the session is started by inviting PlayStation friends; PlayStation currently labels PC cross-play as beta. Console players need an internet connection and PlayStation Plus for online Legends.

What you need before inviting anyone

Legends is Ghost of Tsushima’s online cooperative mode. Everyone in the party must have access to Legends on a supported platform, an active PlayStation Network connection where required, and a game installation that meets the platform’s edition and update requirements.

Platform Edition or update requirement Online requirement Cross-play and sign-in notes
PS4 Ghost of Tsushima installed and updated to patch 1.10 or later, with the Legends unlock matching the game’s region, according to the PlayStation Store listing. Internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required for online Legends. Use the PlayStation Network friend and invitation flow.
PS5 PlayStation lists the Director’s Cut as including Legends online co-op. Internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required for Legends Mode. Use PlayStation Network invitations or accept an invitation from a friend.
PC Use the PC Director’s Cut, which includes Legends. PlayStation sign-in is required for online multiplayer. The official support page does not establish a PlayStation Plus requirement for PC. Cross-play with PS4 and PS5 works when the session begins by inviting PlayStation friends. The feature is currently marked beta. Online multiplayer is unavailable on Steam Deck.

Store wording can vary by region. If a PS4 copy does not show Legends, first check that the installed game and the unlock are from compatible regions, then install the required update. Do not assume that owning the single-player game on one account automatically gives every account on a console access to online play; each player should verify that their own profile can launch Legends.

Before arranging a session, ask every player to confirm three things: platform, edition and online access. A PS4 owner may need to update an older installation, a PS5 player should verify that the installed Director’s Cut includes Legends, and a PC player should complete PlayStation sign-in before trying to invite anyone. Doing these checks first avoids confusing an entitlement problem with a networking problem.

How do I open Ghost of Tsushima: Legends?

You can reach the cooperative lobby in several ways. From the title screen, choose the Legends option. While playing the campaign, open the pause menu and select the Legends entry. You can also speak with a Storyteller in Tsushima. In Legends itself, Gyozen is the Storyteller associated with the lobby. Finally, accepting a PlayStation Network invitation from a friend can take you directly into the session.

Sucker Punch senior game designer Darren Bridges described the options in a PlayStation.Blog post dated October 5, 2020: “Speaking to Gyozen will give you access to the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends lobby, but you can also get there directly from the title menu or the pause menu… or by accepting a PSN invitation from a friend!”

The title-menu route is usually the simplest when the whole group is starting at the same time. The pause-menu and Storyteller routes are useful when someone is already in Tsushima. An invited player does not need to find Gyozen first: accepting the PSN invitation can open the relevant lobby directly.

How do I invite a friend to Legends?

Invite a PlayStation friend on PC

The PC support instructions use the following menu path:

  1. Launch the PC Director’s Cut and sign in to PlayStation when prompted.
  2. From the main menu, select Enter Legends Mode.
  3. Open Social.
  4. Select the PlayStation friend you want to bring into the party.
  5. Choose Send Invite.
  6. Wait for the friend to accept the PlayStation Network invitation and load into the Legends lobby.

The friend must be on your PlayStation friend list for this route to work. If the person is not listed, add or accept the PlayStation Network friendship first, then reopen the Social panel. The official PC wording describes cross-play sessions as starting with invitations to PlayStation friends, so do not expect a PC player to be placed automatically into a console friend’s session merely because both people entered matchmaking.

Use the same host throughout setup when possible. Have that player add every participant, open Social only after the friendship requests are accepted, and send the invitations before selecting a mission. If a friend is shown as offline or missing, verify that the correct PlayStation account is linked and signed in rather than repeatedly launching a queue.

Invite from PS4 or PS5

On console, enter Legends from the title menu, pause menu or a Storyteller, then use the game’s friend invitation flow. You can also send an invitation through PlayStation Network and have the other player accept it from the console notification or invite interface. If a friend sends the invitation first, accepting it is enough to enter the session without navigating to the Storyteller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact wording of console prompts can differ between PS4 and PS5 system software versions. The important sequence is to get both players into Legends, establish the PlayStation Network friendship, and use an invitation rather than relying on an unqualified cross-platform matchmaking assumption.

Accept an invitation

  1. Confirm that you are signed in to the PlayStation Network account that your friend invited.
  2. Accept the invitation from the PlayStation notification or the platform’s invitation screen.
  3. Allow Ghost of Tsushima to open or switch to Legends.
  4. If the invitation expires while you are loading, return to the Legends lobby and ask the host to send it again.

When a player accepts from outside the game, the console or PC may switch applications before loading the lobby. Give that transition time to finish. If the player is already in another activity, returning to the Legends lobby before accepting a replacement invite generally makes it clearer which session they are joining.

Can PS4, PS5 and PC play Ghost of Tsushima: Legends together?

Yes, but the supported setup matters. PC, PS4 and PS5 cross-play is supported when the host starts a game session by inviting friends on PlayStation Network. Nixxes communications manager Julian Huijbregts stated in a May 14, 2024 PlayStation.Blog update: “Cross play between PS4 consoles, PS5 consoles, and PC is supported when starting a game session by inviting friends on PlayStation Network.”

PlayStation’s current PC support page labels this cross-play feature beta. That label means the feature can change as support is updated; it is not a promise that every queue, platform combination or future release will behave identically. For a mixed group, the most reliable plan is to make one player the host, ensure every participant is a PlayStation friend of that host, and send invitations before selecting an activity.

Do not tell a PC player that PlayStation Plus is required for PC Legends. The documented PC requirement is PlayStation sign-in for online multiplayer. PlayStation Plus is explicitly required for online Legends on PS4 and PS5.

Cross-play is therefore an invitation-based arrangement, not a blanket promise of automatic PC-to-console matchmaking. A PC player can join a console friend’s session, and a console player can join a PC host’s session, provided the PlayStation friendship and invitation steps are completed. If the group is mixed-platform, decide who will host before anyone queues so that all invitations come from one known account.

Which Legends activity fits your group?

Choose the activity after everyone is in the lobby. Party size and objective type differ, so selecting a mode that matches the number of players avoids an unnecessary queue or an invitation that cannot be filled.

Activity Party structure What the group does Best fit
Story Two players Complete cooperative narrative missions designed for a pair. A duo that wants a focused mission and story objectives.
Survival Four players Defend against successive enemy waves as a full four-player team. A complete squad looking for a longer defensive run.
Raid Four players Enter the four-player Raid content, which expects a complete team. Four players who are ready to coordinate through Raid content.
Rivals Two teams of two Compete as paired teams, requiring four participants split into two groups. Four players who want competition between two pairs.

If only two people are available, Story is the straightforward choice. Survival and Raid require four players for the intended team size. Rivals also needs four participants, but its structure is two teams of two rather than one cooperative squad. Legends also offers matchmaking when you need to fill open positions.

Party size is a planning constraint, not just a menu detail. A duo cannot turn Story into a four-person activity by inviting more people after launch, and a four-person group should decide whether it wants one cooperative team in Survival or Raid or two competing pairs in Rivals. If one participant leaves, return to the lobby and use an available invite or matchmaking option instead of assuming the activity will automatically resize.

How matchmaking and Ki requirements affect a party

Invites are not the only way to assemble a team. Matchmaking can find other players for supported activities, but a recent Sucker Punch patch note says matchmaking can enforce minimum required Ki levels. Ki is the gear-progression rating used in Legends; a queue may be unavailable or reject a player whose level is below the activity’s threshold.

Check each player’s displayed Ki before assuming that a missing queue is a connection problem. If a party member is under the requirement, equip eligible gear or choose an activity with a lower threshold. The same patch note describes a prompt that can ask remaining party members to invite someone or use matchmaking to fill a slot after a player disconnects. That behavior is patch-specific and can vary by activity or later updates, so treat the prompt as an available recovery option rather than a guarantee for every queue.

Minimum Ki checks matter especially when friends have different amounts of Legends progression. The highest-level player does not necessarily make the whole party eligible; the player below the displayed threshold can still block that queue. Compare the requirement with each participant’s own Ki, then change equipment or choose a different activity before changing network settings.

A reliable first-session procedure

Use this order when the group is playing together for the first time or when players are on different devices:

  1. Confirm editions and updates. PS4 players should have the game installed at patch 1.10 or later and a region-compatible Legends unlock. PS5 players should verify that their Director’s Cut includes Legends online co-op. PC players should launch the PC Director’s Cut.
  2. Check platform access. Console players need internet access and PlayStation Plus. PC players need PlayStation sign-in for online multiplayer; the official PC support information does not list PlayStation Plus as a PC requirement.
  3. Become PlayStation Network friends. This is essential for a PC-to-console session because the supported cross-play path starts with inviting PlayStation friends.
  4. Choose a host. One player should send the invitations and wait for all responses. This avoids creating several partial parties.
  5. Open Legends. Use the title menu, pause menu or a Storyteller. A player who already received an invite can accept it instead.
  6. Send the invitation. On PC, follow Enter Legends Mode → Social → friend → Send Invite. On console, use the in-game friend invitation flow or a PlayStation Network invitation.
  7. Wait for every player to load. Do not start matchmaking or launch an activity while a friend is still accepting the invite; doing so can leave the late player outside the party.
  8. Select the activity by party size. Use Story for two, Survival or Raid for four, and Rivals for two teams of two.
  9. Check Ki before queuing. If matchmaking reports a requirement, compare each player’s Ki with the displayed minimum before changing network settings.

Troubleshooting invitations and cross-play

The friend does not appear in Social

  • Verify that both players are signed in to the intended PlayStation Network accounts.
  • Confirm that the accounts are PlayStation friends, not merely friends on a separate PC launcher.
  • Have both players return to the Legends lobby after accepting a new friendship request, then reopen Social.
  • Check that the PC player is using the PC Director’s Cut and that the console copy has the required update and Legends access.
  • Confirm that the host is looking at the correct friend list; a friendship accepted on a different PlayStation account will not populate the account currently signed in.

The invitation arrives but does not load Legends

  • Accept the invitation while Ghost of Tsushima is closed or while you are already at its title screen, then allow the game to switch into Legends.
  • If the invite has expired, ask the host to send another after both players return to the lobby.
  • Confirm that the internet connection is active. PS4 and PS5 players should also verify that PlayStation Plus is active.
  • Check the destination account before accepting; an invitation accepted under the wrong PlayStation profile will not place the intended player in the party.

PC and console players cannot join the same session

  • Use the invitation-first method. The documented cross-play path is a session started by inviting PlayStation friends.
  • Make sure the host has every participant on the PlayStation friend list and sends the invite from Social.
  • Remember that the PC cross-play feature is currently marked beta, so a later support update could change its behavior.
  • Do not use Steam Deck for online Legends; the official PC support page states that online multiplayer is unavailable there.
  • Do not treat an empty public queue as proof that cross-play is disabled. First confirm the invitation and PlayStation friendship steps, then check each platform’s sign-in and subscription requirements.

Matchmaking is unavailable

  • Read the queue message for a minimum Ki requirement and compare it with each player’s gear level.
  • Switch to an activity appropriate for the current party size.
  • If a player disconnected, look for the patch-supported prompt to invite a replacement or matchmake for the open slot.
  • If the group is mixed-platform, stop relying on automatic matchmaking and have the host send direct PlayStation invitations instead.

Platform-specific checklists

PS4 checklist

  • Ghost of Tsushima is installed and updated to at least patch 1.10, as specified in the Store listing.
  • The Legends unlock and the game installation are from compatible regions.
  • The player is connected to PlayStation Network and has PlayStation Plus.
  • Legends is opened from the title menu, pause menu or a Storyteller before sending or accepting the invitation.
  • The player’s own profile can launch Legends, rather than assuming another account’s entitlement covers it.

PS5 checklist

  • The installed Director’s Cut includes Legends online co-op.
  • An internet connection and PlayStation Plus are active.
  • The player uses PlayStation Network invitations or the in-game friend flow.
  • The player accepts the invitation on the same PlayStation Network account listed by the host.

PC checklist

  • The PC Director’s Cut is installed.
  • PlayStation sign-in is complete for online multiplayer.
  • The host opens Enter Legends Mode → Social, selects a PlayStation friend and chooses Send Invite.
  • For console friends, start the session with those invitations; automatic cross-platform matchmaking is not promised by the official support wording.
  • Do not use Steam Deck for online multiplayer, which the support page lists as unavailable.
  • PlayStation Plus is not established as a PC requirement; do not purchase a console subscription solely because a PC friend is joining.

What to remember when organizing a group

Legends works best when the host settles platform access and invitations before choosing a mission. A two-player Story group should not queue for a four-player Raid, while a four-person group should decide whether it wants one cooperative team in Survival or Raid or two competing pairs in Rivals. For mixed PC and console groups, create the PlayStation friendships first and use the invitation path; for console-only groups, the same PlayStation Network invitation method remains the least ambiguous way to assemble everyone.

Keep the setup order simple: verify the edition and update, confirm the required sign-in or subscription, choose one host, add everyone as PlayStation friends, enter Legends, send invitations, and only then select an activity. If a player disconnects, use a fresh invitation or the matchmaking replacement prompt described for supported patch behavior. If a queue refuses the party, inspect Ki and party size before assuming the network is at fault.
