There are three ways to play games with Discord: launch an Activity inside Discord, join a friend’s game running on their device, or stream your own game to friends with Go Live. Choose an Activity for a game that runs in Discord; use an invite or Join option to enter a friend’s supported game; use Go Live when you want others to watch your game.
Choose the right way to play

Play an Activity inside Discord
Activities are interactive apps, including games, that open within Discord. You can start one in a voice call or channel, or use the App Launcher from a text chat. The available apps and their controls vary, so check the app’s profile or directory listing for instructions specific to that Activity.

- Join a server voice channel, start a direct or group call, or open a text chat.
- Open the App Launcher. In a voice call or channel, use the launcher in the call controls; in a text chat, use the launcher beside the message-entry bar.
- Choose an app that offers an Activity and launch it. If prompted, authorize the app.
- To play with friends in a call, have them join the same voice channel or call, then join the Activity. They may also be asked to authorize it.

This method is for a conventional game your friend is running on a computer or console, rather than a game launched as a Discord Activity. Your friend can send an invite through a text channel, direct message, or group DM. Depending on the game and account settings, you may also see a Join option on your friend’s profile.

- Use an invite: Open the invite your friend sent in Discord and follow its prompt to join the game.
- Use the profile option: Open your friend’s profile and select Join if the option appears.

Stream your game with Go Live
Use Go Live when the game is running on your device and you want people in a Discord voice channel to watch. This shares the game; it does not turn the stream into a shared playable Activity.

- Join a voice channel.
- Open Discord’s screen-streaming control and choose the game app you want to share.
- Select Go Live to start streaming.
Discord says the game needs to be detected by its game detection feature or added manually. If Discord does not recognize the game, the documented game-streaming flow may not be available. See Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share instructions for the streaming controls.
What about playing without installing a game?
Discord documents Cloud Play Quests as an experimental option for playing selected games through cloud streaming without installing them. Availability is limited and may vary by user. Quests can be accepted in a browser or on desktop, but Discord says they can be completed only in the Discord desktop app. It is an availability-dependent extra, not the standard way to launch games on Discord. Voice chat and equipment
A headset with a microphone can make it easier to talk while gaming, but Discord’s documented voice and streaming features do not require a dedicated headset. You can use an available microphone and audio setup; the headset is optional. Discord: Voice Channels FAQs
