If it supports local multiplayer and Steam Remote Play Together, one person can host the game and invite others through Steam instead.
Choose how you’ll play together
Free-to-play describes the price, not how multiplayer works. Each game sets its own modes, invitations, account requirements, and player limits. Check the game’s Steam store page for online co-op, online PvP, local multiplayer, and Remote Play Together support, then confirm the available options in the game itself.

Use the game’s online co-op or PvP
If the game offers online multiplayer, this is usually the route to try first. Install and launch the game, then look for its multiplayer, party, lobby, or invite menu. Follow the game’s own instructions to create or join a session and select the same mode as your friends. The exact controls, requirements, and player cap depend on the game.

Steam store pages can help you check what a game advertises, but verify that it is currently available and that its in-game instructions match your plans. For example, the Steam listing for Curve Fever Pro describes online PvP/co-op, friend features, and custom rooms. When that listing was accessed, it showed a planned September 2026 release and said the game was not yet available; check the current listing before treating it as playable.

Use Steam Remote Play Together for local multiplayer
Remote Play Together is a separate option from a game’s native online multiplayer. It streams a supported local multiplayer game from one host to invited participants. The host launches and runs the game; guests connect to that session rather than each running their own copy. This can let friends join without buying or installing the game themselves on that route, but it only applies when the game supports Remote Play Together and local multiplayer.
Steam’s Remote Play page describes a host inviting up to four additional players, or more with fast connections. That is Steam’s feature description, not a guaranteed limit for every game, session, or internet connection.

- Check support: Look for both local multiplayer and Remote Play Together on the game’s Steam page.
- Start the game: The host launches the supported game on Steam.
- Invite friends: Open Steam Friends and send an invitation. Steam’s March 25, 2021 announcement also describes guests connecting through an invite link using Steam or the Steam Link app. Button names and client steps can change, so use the current Steam interface if they differ.
- Connect and choose controls: Guests accept the invitation and connect through a supported Steam or Steam Link path for their device. Choose the input options the game supports.
Choose an input method
Steam describes participants using their own controllers, and says the host can grant keyboard or mouse access. Its 2021 announcement calls a USB controller useful for a guest playing on a computer, but it is optional if another supported input works. Steam also describes touch input on a phone or tablet. Availability depends on the game, device, and session setup.

If an invitation or connection fails
- Confirm that the game supports both local multiplayer and Remote Play Together; native online multiplayer alone does not establish compatibility.
- Check that the host launched the game before sending the Steam invitation and that the guest is connecting through a supported Steam or Steam Link path for their device.
- Try an input method supported by the game, such as a controller or shared keyboard and mouse. Mobile touch input is another option Steam describes, but it may not suit every game.
- Consult the game’s own support information for its multiplayer rules, invitation steps, and player limits.
