Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is easiest to learn as two connected systems: real-time Active Time Battles and several upgrade tracks for characters, weapons, materia, and summons. Start with Auto in ordinary fights, move to Semi when you want to practice stance control, and use Manual for bosses. Before each difficult quest, read the enemy information, match weaknesses and sigils, then switch between attack and defense stance as the fight changes.
The game is free to play with in-app purchases on iOS, Android, and Steam. Spending is not required by the available game information to learn combat or develop a party. This guide explains the controls, a repeatable preparation routine, and how to decide what to improve when progress stalls.

How do you play Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis?
You form a party, equip each character, enter a quest, and manage abilities as Active Time Battle gauges fill. During the fight you choose abilities, materia, summons, and limit breaks while controlling the party’s stance. Enemies also expose weaknesses, resistances, immunities, and special mechanics that determine which actions are effective.
A reliable beginner loop is:
- Open the quest’s enemy information before starting a hard encounter.
- Note the listed weaknesses, resistances, immunities, and any sigil requirement.
- Equip weapons and materia that cover the fight’s damage, sigil, and survival needs.
- Use attack stance while you are safely dealing damage or breaking a sigil.
- Use defense stance when incoming damage rises or the party needs stronger healing.
- Take over ability and stance decisions in Manual when Auto makes a poor choice.
- After a defeat, inspect character growth, weapons, materia, and summons rather than only raising a character level.
There is no single universally best party or weapon. The useful choice is the one that answers the current enemy and can be improved with the materials you actually have.

How does combat work?
Combat combines an Active Time Battle structure with abilities, materia, summons, limit breaks, Command Stance, and Limit Combo. Each character’s ATB gauge fills during battle; when an action is available, you select an ability or let the chosen control mode select one. Your decisions are therefore about timing and fit, not simply tapping the strongest-looking attack.
Active Time Battle fundamentals
Watch the ability interface rather than waiting for a separate turn. A full gauge gives you an opportunity to attack, heal, apply a useful effect, or prepare for an enemy mechanic. In a routine encounter, letting the game spend actions automatically keeps the pace high. In a boss encounter, save attention for the moments when the enemy changes phase, exposes a sigil, or threatens a weakened character.
Abilities, materia, summons, and limit breaks
Abilities are the normal actions attached to your equipped setup. Materia expands the kinds of attacks and support effects your party can use. Summons provide another powerful option for a suitable opening, while limit breaks are character-specific high-impact actions that you build and unlock through progression. Command Stance changes how the party approaches the current moment, and Limit Combo is an additional game-specific combat system named in the official game overview.

The combat guide describes three control modes. Auto automates ability use when possible and changes stance automatically. Semi automates the controlled character’s ability use when its ATB gauge fills but leaves stance changes to you. Manual leaves both ability selection and stance changes under your control.

This progression from Auto to Semi to Manual is a practical learning path, not an official difficulty ranking. If Auto clears a routine stage, use it. If the same mode wastes a heal, ignores a sigil, or changes stance at the wrong moment, move to Semi or Manual for that fight.
What does attack stance do?
Attack stance is the offensive setting. It favors dealing damage and is useful when you need to break an enemy’s sigils. Keep it active while the party is healthy and the enemy is vulnerable, especially during a short damage window.

Defense stance reduces incoming damage and increases healing. Switch to it when a boss begins a dangerous action, when several characters are hurt, or when the party needs time for a healer’s ATB gauge to fill. Defense stance is not just an emergency button: using it before a predictable heavy attack can prevent the damage that would otherwise force a recovery cycle.
A simple stance decision rule
- Attack: the enemy is not threatening a major hit, your party can survive the next action, or a sigil must be damaged quickly.
- Defense: health is falling, a heavy attack is telegraphed, or healing will decide whether the party remains in the fight.
- Return to attack: the dangerous action has passed and the party is stable enough to resume pressure.
In Semi mode, practice making only these stance decisions while the game handles ability timing. In Manual mode, coordinate stance, target, and ability choice together.
How do I read enemy information and break sigils?
Open the enemy information before difficult fights. The combat guide says this screen shows weaknesses, resistances, and immunities, giving you a preview of which attacks will help and which will underperform or fail. Treat that information as your loadout checklist rather than discovering every mechanic through repeated defeats.
Breaking a sigil
Some enemies enter a Stream Phase with a sigil bar. During that phase, use abilities with the matching sigils to deplete the bar. Breaking the required sigils can interrupt the phase, stopping the enemy’s mechanic before it completes.
- Read the enemy information and identify the sigil symbols.
- Check which equipped abilities or materia can produce those symbols.
- Enter attack stance when you need to push the sigil bar down quickly, provided the party can withstand the incoming damage.
- Use the matching actions as soon as the Stream Phase begins instead of spending the window on unrelated damage.
- Switch to defense stance if the phase’s attacks are overwhelming or the party needs healing while the bar is being reduced.
A high-damage setup that cannot answer the required sigils may perform worse than a less aggressive setup with the correct symbols. This is why a fixed tier list cannot replace reading the encounter.

- Inspect the enemy. Open enemy information and write down weaknesses, resistances, immunities, and Stream Phase sigils.
- Define the party’s jobs. Decide which character will provide the main damage, which actions cover the required sigils, and who can keep the party alive.
- Equip for the actual mechanic. Choose weapons and materia that answer the listed weakness or sigil while retaining enough healing or defensive support.
- Choose a control mode. Use Auto for a simple stage, Semi when stance timing is the main lesson, and Manual when ability order, target selection, or phase timing matters.
- Set a stance plan. Begin in attack stance if you need immediate pressure, then be ready to move to defense before a dangerous action or during recovery.
- Watch the first attempt for information. Note when the enemy enters Stream Phase, which character is targeted, and whether your party lacks damage, sigil coverage, or healing.
- Upgrade the weak link. Improve the relevant character, weapon, materia, or summon, then retry with the same mechanic-focused plan.
This process avoids spending resources randomly. A defeat tells you which requirement was not met; your next change should address that requirement directly.
What should I upgrade first?
Think of progression as four connected tracks: characters, weapons, materia, and summons. The official game overview also identifies statstream growth, new limit breaks, weapon and materia enhancement, materia synthesis, and summon strengthening. Chocobo expeditions can return items and character experience points, giving you another way to accumulate progression materials over time.

Start with the system that addresses the observed problem. If the party survives but cannot finish the boss, inspect character and weapon power. If damage is adequate but a Stream Phase cannot be interrupted, change materia or the relevant weapon setup. If the party collapses during a telegraphed attack, improve survival and use defense stance earlier.

Character levels are the most visible form of growth, but they are only one route. The character and weapon upgrade guide describes character levels and character streams as two development paths. Character streams raise stats and unlock or improve limit breaks. The official overview likewise says players can strengthen characters and learn new Limit Breaks through the statstream.
How to use character growth efficiently
- Level the characters you actually bring to the encounter before spreading materials across the entire roster.
- Inspect the character stream/statstream for nodes that improve the role you need, such as stronger damage or a more useful limit break.
- When a boss defeats you with a specific mechanic, choose growth that helps that mechanic rather than buying unrelated power.
- Revisit the stream after unlocking a new limit break; the best action for one fight may not be the best action for another.
Menu labels and node layouts can change with updates, so use the current in-game description as the authority for exact costs and requirements.
Weapon levels, rarity, and overboosting
Weapons have their own levels. The upgrade guide describes level caps that can be raised, rarity upgrades below five stars, and overboosting when duplicate weapons are available. These systems mean that a weapon’s displayed level is not the only indicator of its potential.

A practical weapon decision
- Identify which weapon supports the role required by the quest.
- Raise its level if the party is broadly short on power.
- Check whether its level cap can be increased when ordinary leveling stops helping.
- Use a rarity upgrade when the weapon is eligible and the resulting improvement answers the encounter.
- Consider overboosting only when duplicates are available and the weapon is part of a setup you continue to use.
Do not treat a weapon as universally best because it has a high rarity or a popular reputation. A weapon that supplies the wrong damage type or does not help with the current sigil requirement may be less useful than a more modest option that does.
Materia enhancement and synthesis
Materia can be enhanced with items and synthesized using recipes. Its main beginner value is coverage: it lets the party answer an enemy weakness, supply a needed sigil, add utility, or improve survival.
Choosing materia for a quest
- Match the enemy’s listed weakness where practical.
- Carry the sigils required for the Stream Phase instead of filling every slot with general damage.
- Keep enough healing or defensive support that the party can survive the phase you are trying to interrupt.
- Enhance the materia attached to characters you use regularly, then replace it when the encounter demands a different answer.
- Use recipes for synthesis when you have a specific result in mind; do not assume every synthesized result is appropriate for every fight.
Because the available guidance does not establish a universal materia ranking, judge a materia by the problem it solves in the next quest rather than by a permanent tier label.
Summons and limit breaks
Summons are one of the combat tools named in the official overview, and summons can be strengthened as part of progression. Save a summon for a moment when its damage or effect can change the fight, such as a vulnerability window or a phase that must end quickly.
Limit breaks are similarly situational. Character streams/statstreams can unlock or improve them, so inspect those systems when a limit break would provide the missing burst, recovery, or control. Build your plan around the encounter’s timing instead of firing every high-impact action immediately.

How do you compare characters, weapons, and parties?
Compare options on three practical axes:
- Mechanic fit: Does the option answer the enemy’s weakness or required sigil?
- Party coverage: Does the group have enough damage and enough healing or survival for the fight?
- Reliable improvement: Can you strengthen the option with the materials and upgrade systems currently available to you?
The first two criteria come directly from the enemy and battle systems. The third is a planning principle: a theoretically excellent setup is not useful if you cannot improve it or do not have the required equipment. Build a flexible core party, then change one or two slots for a specific weakness or Stream Phase rather than rebuilding everything for every quest.
Solo and co-op play
The game supports solo and co-op battles, and parties and equipment are customizable. Solo play gives you direct responsibility for the entire plan: enemy reading, stance changes, ability timing, and recovery. In co-op, agree on the fight’s weakness and sigil requirement before starting, and avoid having every player bring the same role while leaving healing or required symbols uncovered.
Square Enix also announced mobile-to-Steam cross-save. Availability and exact account behavior can depend on the current service setup, so follow the linking instructions shown by the game when moving between supported devices.
What to do when progress stalls
The boss overwhelms the party before you can act
Switch from Auto to Semi or Manual, move to defense stance before the telegraphed hit, and verify that your healing actions are available. If the party still falls, strengthen the characters or weapons used for the encounter and check whether the enemy’s information lists a weakness you are ignoring.
The Stream Phase will not break
Reopen enemy information and compare its sigils with the symbols on your equipped abilities and materia. Replace general damage with the matching coverage, then use attack stance during the phase if the party can survive it. Manual control prevents Auto from spending the window on unrelated actions.
Damage is too low despite a high character level
Inspect weapon levels, level caps, rarity eligibility, and the weapon’s fit for the current role. Check the character stream/statstream and limit-break options as well. Character level alone is only one of the game’s growth systems.
The party survives but cannot recover
Use defense stance to reduce incoming damage and increase healing, then review materia and weapon choices for stronger support. A slower, controlled attempt is preferable to leaving Auto enabled while the party repeatedly loses health.
You do not know where to spend materials
Choose the next quest’s unmet requirement first. Improve the active character or weapon if raw power is missing; synthesize or enhance materia if a weakness or sigil is uncovered; strengthen a summon or develop a limit break when a short damage window is the deciding factor.
Free-to-play model and spending
Square Enix lists Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis as free to play with in-app purchases. That describes how the game is offered, not proof that buying an item is necessary for learning combat or progressing. The available information does not establish a required purchase, a universally valuable banner, or a current promotion.
In-game draws, event shops, rewards, and banner contents can change. Treat any offer as temporary and read the active notice in the game before deciding whether it serves your party’s immediate needs. Do not build a progression plan around an old anniversary reward or a launch-era offer.
A first-week checklist
- Learn where to open enemy information before launching a difficult quest.
- Run ordinary fights in Auto, then practice stance changes in Semi.
- Use Manual for the first boss that defeats you or requires a timed sigil break.
- Keep at least one party setup that can heal and one that covers common damage or sigil needs.
- Spend character-growth materials on the characters you actually deploy.
- Raise relevant weapon levels and check caps, rarity upgrades, and duplicate-based overboosting.
- Enhance or synthesize materia when the enemy’s weakness or sigil requirement demands it.
- Strengthen summons and develop limit breaks when they solve a specific encounter problem.
- Send chocobos on expeditions with characters to earn items and character experience points.
- After every wall, change one clearly identified weakness instead of upgrading at random.
Once you can read the enemy information, choose the right control mode, switch stance deliberately, and match sigils during Stream Phase, the rest of Ever Crisis becomes a resource-management exercise: improve the track that answers the next fight, then adjust the party as new mechanics appear.
