Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is planned to support two-player local couch co-op with split-screen on the same device. The developer has also announced a switch between split-screen and widescreen views, and the free Steam demo includes the first chapter with local split-screen play. Because the full game is scheduled for November 2026 and the cited listings were still pre-release, the exact join prompts, controller requirements and platform-specific setup have not been confirmed.
What local co-op is confirmed to support
The sequel is designed for two people playing together on one screen rather than connecting from separate homes. Steam describes shared and split-screen co-op, while the Xbox store listing labels local co-op as “2–2.” That Xbox notation indicates a two-player local mode; Steam does not advertise a larger local group.

Local co-op is separate from the announced online co-op mode. In couch co-op, both players use the same computer or console and share the room physically. Online co-op is for partners joining remotely. The available material confirms both modes exist, but it does not establish whether every platform offers identical controls, account requirements or host settings.
| Question | What is established | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Number of local players | Two players; the Xbox listing specifies local co-op 2–2. | Any local mode for more than two players is not stated. |
| Screen layout | Split-screen is supported. | The final wording and location of the view setting are not documented. |
| Alternative view | The developer says players can switch to a widescreen view. | Whether this is a shared camera, a different split layout or another presentation option is not explained in the announcement. |
| Communication | Players enter escape rooms together, and pinging is intended to help partners coordinate around the larger campus. | The button, key or controller binding for pinging is not published. |
| Demo content | The free Steam demo contains the first chapter and supports split-screen couch co-op. | The demo is not the complete campaign, and its prompts may change before launch. |
What you need before trying it
A supported device
The available store information points to Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and handheld play, but the final platform matrix is still subject to change. An Epic listing advertises Windows and local split-screen. The Xbox sequel listing names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and handheld play. Steam lists the game for PC. Check the current store page for the device you own rather than assuming that a feature shown on one platform is identical on another.

A second way to control the game
Two people must be able to provide separate inputs, but the cited announcements do not specify the supported controller models, keyboard-and-controller combinations, number of USB devices or whether a second account is required. Do not treat a particular controller count or model as an official requirement until the released build or platform support documentation states it.
The game or demo
The free Steam demo is the only confirmed way to try local co-op before the planned full release. It contains the first chapter, not the complete story. The full game was scheduled for November 2026, and the cited listings described it as not yet available at the October 13, 2026 research date.
How to try local co-op in the Steam demo
The capabilities below are confirmed, but this is not a tested menu walkthrough. The pre-release material does not publish the exact button labels or join sequence, so use the prompts shown by your copy of the demo.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Install the free demo from Steam. Search for the sequel’s official Steam listing and install the demo edition, checking that you have enough storage and that your computer meets the requirements shown on the current page.
- Connect the inputs you intend to use before launching. If both players are using controllers, connect both first. If you plan to mix a controller and keyboard, wait for the demo’s own prompt to confirm that combination is accepted; it has not been documented in the announcement.
- Start the demo and choose its local, shared or split-screen option. The demo is confirmed to include split-screen couch co-op, but the exact menu name and the point at which the second player joins are not published. Follow the on-screen wording rather than relying on instructions for the original game.
- Confirm that the second player is recognized. The game should provide a visible indication that two local participants are active before you enter the chapter. If no join prompt appears, do not assume that a particular face button or keyboard key is correct; check the demo’s controls and Steam input settings.
- Enter the first chapter together. The developer describes players entering escape rooms together. Once both players are in, treat the demo as a cooperative puzzle session: communicate about clues, divide observations and agree before committing to a solution.
- Adjust the view if split-screen is uncomfortable. The developer says the sequel will let players switch between split-screen and widescreen views, specifically noting motion-sickness concerns. The announcement does not provide the final menu path, so look in the active session’s options or accessibility/display controls for the setting.
Completing these steps only demonstrates the demo’s first chapter. It does not unlock or preview every room in the full campaign, and a successful demo setup does not prove that the release build will use the same prompts.

Split-screen and widescreen: which view should you use?
Split-screen
Split-screen gives each local player a portion of the display. It is the explicitly advertised couch-co-op presentation in the Steam demo and the format named by the store listings. It is the sensible first choice when both players need independent views of different clues or areas.
Widescreen
Coin Crew Games says players can switch between split-screen and widescreen views and connects that choice to motion-sickness concerns. The announcement does not define the exact visual behavior of widescreen. It may change how the shared display is presented, but you should rely on the in-game explanation in the released build rather than assuming that it removes every split-screen element.
If either player feels dizzy, nauseated or strained, pause and change the view if the option is available, increase viewing distance and take a break. A display setting can reduce discomfort, but it is not a substitute for stopping when symptoms continue.
How cooperation is meant to work in the campus
The sequel’s announcement places both players in the same escape rooms and describes a larger campus to explore. That design implies that local partners will need to keep track of one another while investigating rooms and moving between areas.

Use spoken coordination
Before interacting with a puzzle, say what each person can see. One player can describe symbols, colors or text while the other checks a different part of the room. This avoids repeatedly moving the same character or overlooking a clue that appears in only one player’s view.
Learn the ping system when the game explains it
The developer says pinging is intended to help partners communicate across the sprawling campus. The cited announcement does not identify a key, button or radial menu, so wait for the tutorial or controls screen to show the binding. Once available, use pings to point out a door, object or route instead of guessing at a control inherited from the original game.
Agree on movement and puzzle ownership
Local co-op works best when one player takes responsibility for navigation and the other tracks clues, then you switch when a puzzle requires a different perspective. Establish a simple rule—such as asking before activating a suspicious device—so one player does not advance a sequence while the other is still reading it.
Local co-op compared with other ways to play
| Mode | Where the players are | Advertised presentation | What you can play before launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local couch co-op | Two people on the same computer or console. | Split-screen, with a developer-announced widescreen option. | The first chapter in the free Steam demo. |
| Online co-op | Players connect remotely. | The cited material confirms the mode but does not specify its final camera or display behavior. | No pre-release online content or setup flow is documented here. |
| Solo play | One person on one device. | No separate solo presentation is specified in the cited announcement. | The demo contains the first chapter, but the available material does not detail its solo rules. |
Choose local co-op if your priority is solving puzzles beside another person and sharing one display. Choose online co-op if the other player cannot be physically present. If you only want to evaluate the game before buying, the Steam demo is limited to its first chapter and should be treated as a preview, not a campaign-length trial.

Platform and release status
Platform information is volatile because the game had not reached its planned release when the cited material was reviewed. The listings identify the following availability claims:
| Listing or source | Information shown | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Coin Crew Games is listed as developer, iam8bit Presents as publisher, and shared/split-screen co-op is described. | The page listed a November 2026 planned release; final setup details were not available at the research date. |
| Epic listing | Windows platform and local co-op/split-screen are advertised. | The cited information does not establish the complete PC feature or input matrix. |
| Xbox sequel listing | Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and handheld play are identified; local co-op is labeled 2–2. | Store labels and supported devices can change, so verify the live listing for your edition. |
Do not assume that instructions for the original Escape Academy apply to the sequel. The original’s PlayStation and Xbox pages also describe local split-screen co-op, but they do not prove that the sequel uses the same menus, account flow or input requirements.

Because the final build was not available in the cited material, the following checks are deliberately limited to general, non-speculative actions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm that you launched the sequel’s demo or released sequel, not the original game.
- Check the current store listing to verify that your platform and edition advertise local co-op.
- Connect or pair the second input before opening the local session, then reopen the mode if the game does not detect it.
- Read the on-screen controls and accessibility pages instead of using button instructions from another platform.
- Test the Steam demo’s first chapter first. If local co-op works there but not in the full release, record the platform, edition and exact prompt so you can consult the game’s current support documentation.
- If the view causes discomfort, pause and look for the announced split-screen/widescreen switch; the final location and label are not documented yet.
There is no evidence in the cited material for a required subscription, a specific controller brand, a mandatory second account or a universal “press this button to join” instruction. Treat any such claim as platform-specific until the released game says otherwise.

Release-day checklist
Use this checklist when the November 2026 release is available:
- Open the store page for your exact platform and confirm that local co-op is still listed.
- Check whether the release notes or support page state the number and type of supported local inputs.
- Update the game and the platform’s controller or input software before starting.
- Launch the local mode with both inputs connected, then follow the displayed join prompt.
- Locate the view setting and test split-screen and widescreen briefly before beginning a long session.
- Open the controls or tutorial screen to identify the ping binding.
- Confirm whether progress is saved by the host, by each player or by the session; this detail was not stated in the pre-release material.
- If the release differs from the demo, follow the final build’s instructions rather than assuming the demo’s behavior is authoritative.
What is still unknown
The confirmed headline is straightforward: two people can play together locally, split-screen is supported, a widescreen alternative has been announced, and the free Steam demo includes the first chapter in couch co-op. Several practical details remain open until the released build is checked:
- The exact menu path and wording for adding the second player.
- Whether keyboard-and-controller combinations are accepted on every PC storefront.
- The number of controllers or input devices supported on each console and PC edition.
- Whether local players need separate platform accounts or profiles.
- The final behavior of widescreen view and its exact accessibility location.
- The button or key used for pinging.
- The final platform matrix, performance targets and cross-platform rules.
Keeping these items separate from confirmed features prevents a pre-release announcement from being mistaken for a tested setup guide. Recheck them against the released game and platform-specific support notes before planning a group session.
Bottom line
Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is the right choice for a two-person same-screen puzzle session: local split-screen co-op is advertised, the developer has announced a split-screen/widescreen switch, and the free Steam demo lets you try the first chapter before the planned November 2026 launch. Install the demo to verify your own hardware, use the prompts it provides, and wait for the release build to confirm the exact join flow, controller support and platform requirements.
