How to Play DVDs on a Computer With an External DVD Drive

Connect the external USB DVD drive, insert the movie disc, and open it in DVD-capable playback software. On a Mac, Apple’s DVD Player can use an external drive; on Windows or macOS, VLC is a free alternative. If playback fails, check the disc, the selected drive, the player’s DVD setting, and region compatibility.

What you need

Playing a movie DVD requires two separate components:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • An optical drive: The external USB DVD drive reads the physical disc and sends its contents to the computer.
  • DVD playback software: A DVD-capable application interprets the disc’s video structure and plays the movie, menus, subtitles, and audio.

A drive appearing in File Explorer or Finder does not prove that a suitable movie player is installed. Likewise, installing a player cannot help if the computer cannot detect the drive or the drive cannot read DVDs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the computer and drive first

  • Confirm that the computer has a compatible USB port for the drive. Some drives use a USB connector that requires an adapter on newer computers.
  • Check that the drive is designed to read DVDs, not only CDs. Product descriptions may call this DVD-ROM, DVD reader, or DVD-Video support.
  • Make sure the operating system supports the drive. Universal plug-and-play behavior is not guaranteed for every computer and drive combination.
  • If you already have a working compatible optical drive, buying another one is unnecessary.

How the two components work together

The drive handles the physical part of the job: it spins the disc, reads its data, and exposes the disc to the computer. The player handles the movie part: it recognizes the DVD-Video structure, opens its menus, and decodes the available audio and video. This division explains several common symptoms. A drive can be visible while no movie starts because no DVD-capable player is configured. Conversely, VLC or another player can be installed correctly but still show no disc when the USB connection or drive is not working.

Step-by-step: play a DVD

1. Connect the external drive

  1. Plug the drive directly into a suitable USB port on the computer.
  2. Wait for the operating system to detect it. A notification, a new device in Finder, or a drive entry in File Explorer may appear.
  3. If nothing appears, disconnect and reconnect the cable, try another suitable port, and consult the drive manufacturer’s setup instructions.

Do not assume that a spinning disc means the drive is ready for playback. The computer must identify the drive and the player must be able to access the DVD-Video contents.

2. Insert the movie disc

  1. Place the DVD label-side up in the tray, or insert it into the slot-loading drive.
  2. Allow a few seconds for the disc to spin and be recognized.
  3. Do not rely on autoplay. Many systems show the disc in the file browser without launching a movie player.

If the computer asks what to do, opening the disc in a file browser is not the same as starting the movie. You can dismiss the prompt and launch the DVD player manually.

3. Choose a DVD-capable player

Use the built-in Apple DVD Player on macOS, or open the disc with VLC on Windows or macOS. The choice depends mainly on your operating system and whether you want a built-in application or one player that works on both platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VLC is free software from VideoLAN. Download it from VideoLAN’s official site rather than treating a third-party download page as the source of the player. A free player is useful when Windows does not already have a suitable DVD application or when you want the same interface on a Mac and a Windows computer.

4. Start playback on a Mac with Apple DVD Player

  1. Open the DVD Player application from Applications or Spotlight.
  2. If the application does not open the disc automatically, use its command for opening a DVD and select the connected external drive.
  3. Use the on-screen controls to start the main feature, select chapters, change audio, or enable subtitles.

Apple’s current macOS documentation states that DVD Player can play DVDs from a built-in drive or an external drive such as a SuperDrive. The documentation supports the external-drive category; it does not establish compatibility for every third-party model.

5. Start playback with VLC

  1. Install VLC from VideoLAN’s official download source for your operating system.
  2. Launch VLC after the disc has been inserted.
  3. Choose Open Disc from VLC’s media-opening commands. In many desktop builds this is available through the Media menu.
  4. In the disc dialog, select DVD and verify that the external drive is the selected device. If VLC selected another optical drive or a different device, choose the correct one manually.
  5. Start playback. If the disc has a menu, use VLC’s controls to choose the feature, chapter, audio track, or subtitle.

VideoLAN lists VLC as DVD-capable and provides Windows and macOS builds. Its Windows version is listed as running through Windows 11. Menu labels can vary slightly by VLC release, but the required action is to open the disc rather than a normal video file.

6. Confirm that the disc is being opened as a DVD

A movie disc may contain folders and files that look ordinary in Finder or File Explorer. Do not select an individual file when the player offers an Open Disc workflow. Selecting the DVD option lets the application interpret the title structure, menus, chapters, audio tracks, and subtitles as one DVD rather than as unrelated files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Which player should you use?

Option Operating system What it does When it makes sense
Apple DVD Player macOS Plays DVDs from a built-in or external drive. Use it when you want the Mac’s built-in DVD application and the disc is recognized normally.
VLC Windows and macOS Opens DVD discs through its Open Disc command. Use it when you need one player across both systems or when autoplay does not launch the movie.
No player yet Windows or macOS The drive may still appear as storage, but movie playback is not configured. Install a DVD-capable player before troubleshooting the disc itself.

The drive and the player solve different problems. Replacing the player will not repair a disconnected drive, and replacing the drive will not automatically provide movie-playback software.

Built-in player or VLC?

For a Mac user whose disc is recognized normally, Apple DVD Player is the most direct first attempt because Apple documents playback from an external drive. VLC is the practical cross-platform choice: it is available for macOS and Windows, is free, and uses an explicit Open Disc command instead of depending on autoplay. Neither choice removes a physical disc problem or guarantees playback of a disc whose region is incompatible with the drive.

What to do when the DVD does not play

The external drive is not visible

  1. Remove the disc and reconnect the drive.
  2. Try another compatible USB port, preferably a direct connection rather than an unpowered hub.
  3. Check whether the operating system shows any new device at all.
  4. Read the drive maker’s installation guidance for your computer and operating system.

The available documentation does not establish universal plug-and-play behavior for every model, so a drive that works on one computer may still require a different connection or setup on another.

The disc appears, but playback does not start

  1. Open the player yourself instead of waiting for autoplay.
  2. Use the player’s Open Disc function, not the command for opening an ordinary video file.
  3. Confirm that the external DVD drive is selected in the dialog.
  4. Close other applications that may have the disc open, then try again.

A visible disc icon only proves that the operating system can identify some contents. It does not prove that the movie player has opened the DVD-Video structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The disc spins, but the screen is blank or an error appears

  1. Try another known-good movie DVD. This helps separate a disc problem from a drive or software problem.
  2. Inspect the original disc for scratches, cracks, heavy fingerprints, or warping.
  3. Reopen the disc from the player and verify the selected device.
  4. Test the external drive on the same computer with a different DVD, if one is available.

Using another known-good disc is a practical diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every damaged disc can be recovered.

The drive reads data discs but not movie DVDs

  • Confirm that the inserted disc is a DVD-Video disc and that the drive’s specifications include DVD reading.
  • Open it through a DVD-capable player rather than treating it as a folder of files.
  • Try a second movie DVD to determine whether the issue follows one disc.

Reading a data disc does not by itself establish that the player is configured for DVD-Video playback.

The player opens, but the wrong drive is selected

This can happen when more than one optical device is connected or when the computer remembers a different device. In VLC’s Open Disc dialog, inspect the device field before pressing Play. Select the external drive that contains the movie. On a Mac, close and reopen DVD Player after connecting the drive if the disc was inserted before the application started.

The disc works on one computer but not another

Compare the two setups instead of assuming the disc is faulty. Check whether the second computer has the required USB connection, whether its operating system recognizes the drive, whether a DVD-capable player is installed, and whether the two drives have compatible region settings. A successful test on one computer confirms that the disc can be read somewhere, but it does not establish universal compatibility for every computer or external-drive model.

DVD region restrictions

A movie DVD and an optical drive can have region settings. If the disc was sold for a different region from the drive’s configured region, playback may fail even when the disc and USB connection are otherwise fine.

How to diagnose a region problem

  1. Check the disc packaging or label for its region information.
  2. Check the drive’s current region setting in the computer’s optical-drive properties, where the operating system exposes that information.
  3. Try a DVD intended for the drive’s region. If that disc plays while the imported disc does not, region compatibility is a likely cause.

VideoLAN explains that region playback depends on the drive. VLC is not a guaranteed way to bypass region protection: newer drives may enforce restrictions through firmware or limit access in ways the application cannot reliably circumvent.

What not to assume

  • Installing VLC does not automatically change the drive’s region.
  • A disc from another country is not necessarily defective because it fails on your computer.
  • Changing region settings can be subject to drive or operating-system limits, so follow the hardware maker’s documentation rather than relying on claims that any player can remove the restriction.

Mac and Windows differences

Mac

macOS can use Apple DVD Player with an external optical drive. Connect the drive, insert the disc, and open DVD Player if the movie does not launch. VLC is available as an alternative when you prefer its controls or need the same player on another computer.

Windows

Use VLC or another installed application that explicitly supports DVD playback. After inserting the disc, open VLC’s Open Disc dialog and select the external drive. VideoLAN lists its Windows build through Windows 11, but the exact behavior still depends on the computer, drive, disc, and region settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What stays the same on both systems

The basic sequence is identical: connect a DVD-reading drive, wait for detection, insert the disc, open a DVD-capable application, and select the external drive. The main difference is the default software. Apple documents DVD Player for macOS, while VLC supplies a DVD-capable option for both Windows and macOS.

Should you buy an external DVD drive?

Buy one only when the computer lacks a working compatible optical drive or the existing drive cannot read the DVDs you need. An external USB drive is useful because it can be connected when required and removed afterward, but the category alone does not guarantee compatibility with a particular computer.

Your situation Most practical choice Why
Your computer already has a working DVD drive Use that drive with a DVD-capable player. There is no need to add hardware merely to install another player.
Your computer has no optical drive Choose an external USB DVD drive. The external drive supplies the missing hardware needed to read the disc.
Your built-in drive is unreliable Test another compatible drive, including an external model. This separates a hardware fault from a software or disc problem.
You need to play discs from another region Verify region compatibility before buying. The drive’s region behavior may determine whether imported discs play.

Checklist before buying

  • Port: Match the drive’s connector to the computer, or confirm that a suitable adapter is supported.
  • Operating system: Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your version of Windows or macOS.
  • Disc support: Confirm DVD reading and DVD-Video use, not just CD reading.
  • Power: Follow the manufacturer’s requirements if the drive needs more power than one USB connection supplies.
  • Region: If you own imported discs, verify how the drive handles region settings before purchase.

No particular drive model is established here as universally compatible or tested. Treat compatibility claims as model-specific and check the seller’s or manufacturer’s specifications for the exact computer and operating system.

What an external drive does not include automatically

Buying hardware does not necessarily install a movie player or solve region restrictions. Plan for both parts of the setup: a drive that reads DVDs and software that opens DVD-Video discs. If the computer already has a compatible drive, VLC may be all you need, and VLC itself is free from VideoLAN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Opening the disc in a file browser and stopping there: A folder view is not the same as movie playback. Use a DVD-capable application.
  • Assuming autoplay is required: Start the player manually and select Open Disc.
  • Blaming the software immediately: First determine whether the drive is detected and whether another DVD can be read.
  • Assuming VLC defeats every region restriction: Drive firmware and access controls can prevent that.
  • Buying before checking ports: A drive with the wrong connector may require an adapter or a different setup.
  • Using a data-disc workflow for a DVD-Video disc: Select the DVD option in the player so its menus and title structure are interpreted correctly.
  • Assuming every USB DVD drive behaves identically: Compatibility is model-specific, so check the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Testing only one disc: A damaged or incompatible disc can make a working drive appear defective. Use a known-good DVD as a comparison.

A quick decision path

  1. No drive detected: Reconnect it, try another suitable USB port, and consult the hardware instructions.
  2. Drive detected, no movie: Open Apple DVD Player on macOS or VLC’s Open Disc command and select the external drive.
  3. One disc fails: Test another known-good DVD and inspect the original for damage.
  4. Only imported discs fail: Compare the disc’s region with the drive’s region setting.
  5. Data discs work but movie DVDs do not: Verify DVD-Video support and use a DVD-capable player.
  6. The drive works elsewhere but not here: Compare the USB port, operating-system support, player installation, and region settings on the two computers.

Why does my external DVD drive show up but not play the movie?

The operating system may see the hardware without a player opening the DVD-Video structure. Launch the player manually, choose Open Disc, select the external drive, and confirm that the disc is a movie DVD rather than only a data disc.

Is VLC free for DVD playback?

Yes. VideoLAN distributes VLC as free software and lists DVD capability for Windows and macOS. Use VideoLAN’s official download source.

Does a Mac need special software for an external DVD drive?

macOS includes Apple DVD Player, which Apple documents for playback from built-in or external drives such as a SuperDrive. VLC is an alternative if you prefer a cross-platform player or the built-in application does not open the disc as expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can VLC play a DVD from another country?

It may, but it is not guaranteed. Playback depends on the drive’s region behavior, and newer drives may enforce restrictions through firmware or other access controls that VLC cannot reliably circumvent.

Do I need to buy an external drive if my computer already has one?

No. Use the existing compatible drive if it reads DVDs. Buy an external model only when the computer lacks a working drive or the existing one cannot read the discs you need.

What should I check before buying an external DVD drive?

Check the connector and available USB port, operating-system compatibility, DVD and DVD-Video reading support, power requirements, and region behavior if you use imported discs. No single model is established as universally compatible.

Why can the drive read CDs or data discs but not a movie DVD?

Verify that the hardware supports DVD reading, that the disc is a DVD-Video disc, and that the player is opening it through its DVD option. Test another movie DVD to determine whether the problem follows one disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final checklist

  • The external drive is connected and visible to the computer.
  • The inserted disc is a DVD-Video disc and is not visibly damaged.
  • A DVD-capable player is installed.
  • The player’s Open Disc command points to the external drive.
  • The disc and drive are compatible in region settings.

Once those conditions are met, the normal workflow is straightforward: connect the drive, insert the DVD, open it in Apple DVD Player or VLC, and choose the movie from the disc menu.
