How to Play DUSK on a Modern PC and Configure Its Controls

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install DUSK from its official Steam listing, confirm that your PC meets the published requirements, launch the game, then open Settings → Feel → Bindings to review or change controls. Keyboard and mouse are the most direct starting point for its fast first-person combat; a controller is also practical after you verify the in-game bindings.

The original PC requirements are modest, but the Steam client itself may require a newer operating system than the game’s historical minimum. Check both before troubleshooting an installation.

What you need to run DUSK

DUSK released on Steam on December 10, 2018. The Steam listing provides versions for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. The Windows figures below are the published game requirements, not a modern performance benchmark.

Windows target Operating system Processor Memory Graphics DirectX Storage Other requirement
Minimum Windows 7 or later 2.4 GHz dual-core or higher 2 GB RAM GeForce 9800GT or equivalent Version 9 2 GB available Not stated
Recommended Windows 10 2.4 GHz quad-core or higher 4 GB RAM GeForce GTX 460 or equivalent Not separately stated 2 GB available Broadband internet for network features

The listing also contains macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements. Because storefront requirements can change, use the current Steam page for the exact figures for those editions rather than applying the Windows numbers to every operating system.

Why an old Windows minimum can be misleading

Windows 7 is the game’s published minimum, but Steam’s current desktop client has its own support policy. A computer can therefore meet the game’s 2 GB RAM and DirectX 9 requirements while still being unable to install or update the current Steam client. If Steam itself refuses to run, check the client’s operating-system requirements separately before treating the game as incompatible.

A pre-install checklist

  • Confirm that your Steam client can run on the operating system you intend to use. The game’s historical Windows 7 minimum is not a guarantee that today’s client supports that installation.
  • Compare your processor, RAM, graphics adapter and DirectX support with the table rather than judging compatibility by the game’s age.
  • Reserve at least the stated 2 GB of storage on the library drive. Additional free space is sensible because Steam can need working room for downloads and updates.
  • If you plan to use a controller, connect it before the first launch or have it ready to reconnect at the input screen.
  • Decide whether you want keyboard and mouse or a gamepad as your primary device. You can change the layout later, but testing one complete setup before a campaign avoids confusing mid-level changes.

Install DUSK through Steam

  1. Install or update the Steam desktop client on a supported operating system, then sign in to the account that owns DUSK.
  2. Open the game’s official Steam store listing and choose the purchase or library option shown for your account.
  3. In Steam, open Library, select DUSK, and choose Install. Pick a drive with at least 2 GB free; leaving additional headroom helps Steam download updates and create temporary files.
  4. When the download completes, select Play. Allow the first launch to finish its setup, and do not disconnect a controller you intend to configure until the game reaches its menus.
  5. At the title screen, open the options menu and confirm that the display, audio and input devices are detected before starting a campaign level.

There is no special installation utility or dedicated accessory requirement identified for the PC release. A compatible computer, the Steam client and an input device are sufficient. If you are installing on a machine with several drives, note which library location you selected; that makes later free-space troubleshooting much easier.

What is included

The store listing describes a campaign, Endless Survival Mode and DUSKWorld arena multiplayer. It also carries a mature-content notice for pixelated blood and gore. Those modes and the content notice are part of the PC release, so choose the mode and presentation that fit your session before inviting others to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The campaign is the most useful place to learn the controls because it introduces movement, weapons and interaction in sequence. Endless Survival Mode is a practical stress test after the basics work, while DUSKWorld is the arena multiplayer component. Broadband internet is listed with the recommended Windows configuration for network features; it is not presented as a replacement for the game’s local hardware requirements.

Configure keyboard and mouse controls

The documented control editor is reached from the game itself:

  1. Launch DUSK and open Settings.
  2. Select the Feel tab.
  3. Open Bindings.
  4. Select an action, press the keyboard key or mouse input you want to use, and inspect the resulting layout before leaving the menu.
  5. Enter a safe, low-pressure area and test movement, jumping, crouching, firing, zooming, interacting and weapon selection.

Change one or two commands first, test them, and then continue. That approach makes a conflict easy to identify and avoids forgetting which of several simultaneous edits caused a problem. Keep a written note or screenshot of a layout you like, especially if more than one person uses the computer.

A developer response explains that “Most, but not all things can be re-bound to whatever key (or input) you need.” Gameplay-centric actions are generally configurable, while some menu controls remain hard-bound. The same response notes that an INI configuration can help with additional mouse, wheel, alphabetic and function-key inputs when the normal menu does not expose the assignment you want. Treat INI editing as an advanced fallback: change one entry at a time and keep a backup so you can restore a working layout.

Plan the layout around combat

Fast movement and aiming should remain available while you perform secondary actions. Keep crouch and quick melee on a key or mouse button that does not require you to release movement. Leave direct weapon selection on the number row if your hand can reach it comfortably; otherwise use a nearby arrangement that you can identify without looking away from the screen. Put utility commands such as flashlight, holster and last-weapon somewhere memorable, but separate quick save, quick load and restart from the keys you press during combat.

The default layout is a useful baseline because tutorials, guides and other players can describe commands by their familiar names. An alternate or left-handed layout is equally valid when a laptop keyboard or a player’s reach makes the default uncomfortable. After changing movement, test forward, backward, strafing and diagonal movement before changing anything else.

Default keyboard and mouse layout

The following is the developer-published baseline. The game’s Feel → Bindings screen is authoritative if a later update or an existing custom profile differs.

Input Default action
W / A / S / D Move
Space Jump
Left Ctrl Crouch
Left Shift Walk
Mouse 0 Fire or throw
Mouse 1 Zoom
Mouse 2 Quick melee
E Interact or use
F Flashlight
R Flip weapon
H Holster
Q Last used weapon
1–0 Direct weapon selection
Tab Toggle stats
F6 Quick save
F9 Quick load
F1 Restart

Here, “Mouse 0,” “Mouse 1” and “Mouse 2” refer to the numbered mouse inputs used by the published layout. On a conventional mouse they correspond to the primary button, secondary button and middle-button input, but confirm the labels shown by your own binding screen.

What each group is for

  • Movement: W/A/S/D, jump, crouch and walk form the core navigation set. Test them together rather than one at a time.
  • Combat: Mouse 0 fires or throws, Mouse 1 zooms and Mouse 2 performs quick melee. These are the commands most likely to benefit from a reachable mouse arrangement.
  • Interaction and utility: E interacts, F activates the flashlight, R flips the weapon, H holsters it and Q returns to the last used weapon.
  • Selection and information: The number row selects weapons directly, while Tab toggles stats.
  • Recovery commands: F6 quick-saves, F9 quick-loads and F1 restarts. Keep them away from accidental presses and remember that restart is not an ordinary combat command.

A practical first custom layout

  • Keep movement on W/A/S/D initially so tutorials and community advice remain easy to follow.
  • Leave crouch and quick melee on keys or mouse buttons reachable without lifting your movement hand.
  • Use the number row for direct weapon selection if you can reach it comfortably; otherwise test a wheel or nearby mouse buttons.
  • Keep quick save, quick load and restart where you will not press them accidentally during combat.
  • If a laptop keyboard makes the default arrangement awkward, create a left-handed or alternate movement scheme in Feel → Bindings and test every action before beginning a long level.

Use a controller on PC

A later PC update added a weapon wheel, improved controller bindings including DualShock 4 support, and Auto-Hop and Auto-Climb options. The announcement does not publish a complete current button chart, so there is no reliable universal list of controller buttons to copy.

  1. Connect the controller before launching the game, or reconnect it before opening the input settings if it was unplugged.
  2. Open Settings → Feel → Bindings.
  3. Select each essential action and press the controller button, trigger, stick direction or D-pad input you want to assign.
  4. Confirm movement, camera look, jump, crouch, fire, zoom, quick melee, interact, weapon selection and pause/menu navigation.
  5. Test the arrangement in a safe area. Check the weapon wheel and any Auto-Hop or Auto-Climb setting separately, since movement assistance can change how traversal feels.

If the controller is detected by the operating system but not by the game, close the game, reconnect the device, and launch again. If only some actions respond, inspect the binding screen for an unassigned or conflicting input rather than assuming the controller model is unsupported. Because no complete current button chart is published, your own saved in-game layout should be the reference you trust.

Controller setup for different play styles

Players who prefer analog movement can keep navigation on the sticks and assign combat commands to buttons that remain reachable while moving. A weapon wheel can reduce the number of individual selection buttons you need, but check every slot rather than assuming the wheel uses a familiar console arrangement. Auto-Hop and Auto-Climb are optional movement aids; test each one independently so you know whether it improves traversal for your hands and play style.

Keyboard and mouse versus controller

Both input methods are supported, but they emphasize different strengths. The available sources establish rebinding and improved controller support; they do not provide latency, frame-rate or accuracy benchmarks.

Consideration Keyboard and mouse Controller
Aiming precision Mouse aiming gives a direct, granular camera input and is the clearest baseline for a fast PC shooter. Analog aiming may feel more natural to players accustomed to gamepads; tune and test it in the binding screen.
Weapon access The number row, Q and other keyboard inputs provide many immediately reachable assignments. A weapon wheel and configurable buttons consolidate selection, but you should verify every slot yourself.
Long-session comfort Depends on desk, keyboard and mouse position; a USB gaming mouse can make fire, zoom and melee easier to reach. Can be preferable if you want both hands on one device or already use an analog layout.
Accessibility and reach Individual actions can be moved to alternate keys, mouse buttons or supported wheel inputs; some menu actions remain fixed. Button remapping and analog movement can help some players, while the available range depends on the controller and the game’s exposed bindings.
Movement preference W/A/S/D provides discrete, familiar PC movement. Analog sticks provide variable movement and pair naturally with Auto-Hop or Auto-Climb options when those suit your play style.

There is no source-backed reason to promise that one option produces a particular frame rate, latency or accuracy percentage. Choose according to reach, comfort, aiming preference and how many commands you want immediately available. You can also use the comparison as a troubleshooting clue: if a mouse action is awkward, test another mouse input; if a controller action is missing, assign it explicitly in Bindings.

Choose and connect useful accessories

No special hardware is required beyond a compatible computer and an input device. If you are adding one accessory, a USB gaming mouse is the most directly relevant choice because the published layout assigns fire/throw, zoom and quick melee to mouse inputs. A USB keyboard is a secondary option for the many movement, interaction, weapon and utility commands. These are task-enabling peripherals, not requirements for launching the game, and no specific price or DUSK-branded accessory is established here.

Verify controls before starting a campaign

Do this short check after every profile change, controller reconnection or major update:

  • Walk forward, backward and sideways, then confirm that diagonal movement behaves as expected.
  • Jump and crouch; check whether your chosen keys or buttons are reachable while moving.
  • Fire, zoom and perform quick melee without releasing movement.
  • Interact with an object and activate the flashlight.
  • Switch directly to several weapons, use the last-weapon command and open the weapon wheel if using a controller.
  • Confirm holster, walk, stats and the save/load/restart commands, taking care not to trigger destructive commands accidentally.
  • Play for a few minutes in a low-pressure area before committing to a campaign level or multiplayer match.

This check also catches a common mistake: assigning a command successfully but never testing it while another action is held. For example, a key may work while standing still yet be uncomfortable when you are moving, crouching and aiming at the same time. Test the combinations you will actually use.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Steam will not install or launch

Compare your operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, DirectX support and free storage with the published Windows table. If all match but Steam itself will not run, investigate the Steam client’s current operating-system support; the game’s Windows 7 minimum does not guarantee client compatibility.

The game opens but controls feel wrong

Open Settings → Feel → Bindings and compare the active profile with the default table. A previous custom binding, a different keyboard layout or a controller connected during launch can change what you expect. Reassign one action, test it immediately, and then continue rather than changing every command at once.

An action cannot be rebound

This can be expected. The developer states that not every input is re-bindable and that some menu controls remain hard-bound. Keep gameplay actions in the normal editor; use the INI route only when you specifically need an additional mouse, wheel, alphabetic or function-key input and are comfortable restoring the file if necessary.

The controller works in menus but not in combat

Return to the binding screen and assign the gameplay actions individually. Verify that fire, look, movement, jump, crouch, zoom, melee and weapon selection each show a controller input. Then test in a safe area. The update that improved controller support does not supply a universal button chart, so your saved layout—not a generic online diagram—should be your reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You run out of disk space during an update

The listing specifies 2 GB for the game, but Steam may need temporary working space while downloading or updating. Free additional space on the selected drive, restart the download, and confirm that the library is installed on the drive you intended.

You changed too many bindings and want to recover

Return to the binding editor and compare each command with the published baseline. Restore one action at a time, testing after each change. If you used an INI file, restore the backup you made before editing rather than deleting settings at random. Remember that menu controls may remain fixed even after gameplay commands are restored.

Which mode should you start with?

The campaign is the natural first test for a new control layout because it lets you learn movement, weapons and interaction in sequence. Endless Survival Mode emphasizes repeated combat, making it useful for checking weapon selection and quick melee once the basics work. DUSKWorld is the arena multiplayer component; confirm your network connection if you intend to use its network features, since broadband internet is listed with the recommended Windows configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I change DUSK key bindings on PC?

Launch the game and open Settings → Feel → Bindings. Select an action, press the replacement key or mouse input, then test the layout before starting a level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can every DUSK control be rebound?

No. The developer says most gameplay inputs can be rebound, but some menu controls remain hard-bound. An INI configuration can help with additional mouse, wheel, alphabetic and function-key inputs.

What are DUSK’s default mouse controls?

Mouse 0 is fire or throw, Mouse 1 is zoom and Mouse 2 is quick melee. Confirm the labels in your own Bindings screen because a custom profile or later update can differ.

Does DUSK support controllers on PC?

Yes. A later PC update improved controller bindings, added DualShock 4 support and introduced a weapon wheel. Connect the controller and assign every essential action in Settings → Feel → Bindings because no complete universal button chart is published.

What are the minimum Windows requirements?

The published minimum is Windows 7 or later, a 2.4 GHz dual-core processor or higher, 2 GB RAM, a GeForce 9800GT or equivalent, DirectX 9 and 2 GB of available storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the recommended Windows requirements?

The listing recommends Windows 10, a 2.4 GHz quad-core processor or higher, 4 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 460 or equivalent, 2 GB storage and broadband internet for network features.

Why can a PC meet the game requirements but still fail to install DUSK?

The game’s historical Windows 7 minimum and the current Steam client’s operating-system policy are separate. Check Steam’s present client requirements if the client will not run or update.

Which input should I choose for DUSK?

Keyboard and mouse are the clearest baseline for fast PC shooting and provide many immediate weapon and utility binds. A controller may be more comfortable for analog movement or long sessions. Compare aiming, reach, weapon access and comfort, then test your chosen layout in a safe area.

The Bottom Line

Use the current Steam listing to verify compatibility, install DUSK through Steam, and begin with keyboard and mouse if you want the most direct PC-FPS layout. Configure everything under Settings → Feel → Bindings, remember that some menu commands cannot be changed, and test movement, combat, interaction, weapon selection and recovery commands before a serious run. Controllers work after the later support improvements, but assign and verify their buttons yourself rather than relying on an assumed chart.
