If you want to play Dungeons of Daggorath without entering every action as a typed command, the browser-based WebAssembly port is the most direct place to start: its page lists a “Modern Controls” option described as “Arrow keys + TAB for controls.” Other routes include a community 3DS port with button mappings and a joystick-oriented Color Computer hack. They are separate adaptations, with different setup requirements and changes to the game.
Which version reduces the most command typing?
The options differ in hardware, how much typing remains, and setup. The browser port documents the simplest software-only control option; the 3DS port maps frequent actions to buttons but retains keyboard entry; and the Color Computer hack adds joystick input while also changing game content.

| Route | Hardware and setup | How much typing remains |
|---|---|---|
| Browser/WebAssembly port | Played through the port’s page. Its project documentation says the threaded WebAssembly build requires SharedArrayBuffer support and cross-origin isolation headers; browser-by-browser compatibility is not established. | The page lists “Modern Controls” as “Arrow keys + TAB for controls.” The cited page does not detail every action’s mapping. |
| Community 3DS port | Requires a 3DS and the community port. The repository lists release 1.1 dated June 5, 2020; that does not establish current installation support or compatibility. | Buttons handle common movement, turning, attacks, and examination. An optional keyboard remains for creating commands and other input. |
| Dungeons of Doom Color Computer hack | For Color Computer hardware or emulation, with the hack installed. | Joystick movement and its button provide movement and ATTACK RIGHT. This is a game modification, not just a control remap. |
| Original command interface | The original game’s command-based interface. | Commands are typed and submitted with Enter, but the manual documents abbreviations that can shorten them. |
Try the browser port’s Modern Controls
The Daggorath.online page presents Modern Controls as an option on the browser game itself, described as “Arrow keys + TAB for controls.” That makes it a sensible first route to investigate if you want software controls rather than a hardware-specific adaptation. The page’s description does not specify a complete key map, so check the controls shown in the game rather than assuming which key performs each action.
There is an important setup caveat: the web-port project documentation says its threaded WebAssembly build needs SharedArrayBuffer support and cross-origin isolation headers. The available documentation does not establish compatibility for every browser or explain that requirement as a universal barrier to every way of using the page. If the port does not load or behave as expected, consult the project’s website and web-port documentation for its build details.
#1 Best Overall
- D&D Board game
- Play time: 45+ minutes
- 1 rulebook, 1 game board, 2 dice, 165 cards, 8 hero standees, 139 die-cut tokens
Use command abbreviations in the original interface
The Tandy-attributed game manual describes the classic sequence: type a command and press Enter. You do not always need to enter the full command, but abbreviations must remain clear enough not to conflict with another command.
- ATTACK LEFT: enter
A L. - PULL LEFT SWORD: enter
P L SW.
These are still typed commands, including spaces; abbreviating reduces keystrokes but does not turn the interface into direct movement controls. If a short form is ambiguous or too short, use a longer form.

What the 3DS port maps to buttons
The separate Dungeons of Daggorath 3DS project documents button mappings for common actions: the directional pad handles movement and turning, A and X are used for attacks, Y examines, L creates a command, and R turns around. Its README also describes an optional keyboard and a menu with ten save slots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis route can reduce repeated command entry for mapped actions, but it still has a command-creation function and is not the same project as the browser port. The repository’s release 1.1 is dated June 5, 2020; that release record alone does not show whether installation methods or console compatibility remain current.

What the Color Computer joystick hack changes
Dungeons of Doom is a separate hack for Color Computer play, not an official control-only release. Its author documents joystick movement and using the joystick button for ATTACK RIGHT. The hack also changes game content and includes an optional unlimited-power setup, so it changes the experience beyond reducing typing. It is most relevant if you specifically want to play on Color Computer hardware or through emulation and are comfortable with those alterations.

No purchase is established as necessary to reduce typing: the browser option is a software control choice. The cited sources do not establish a currently available physical product that solves this problem. A 3DS or Color Computer route does require the relevant hardware or emulation setup, but neither is needed simply to investigate the browser port.
