Put legally obtained Duke 3D data files—normally DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS—in the same folder, run netduke32 -net -n0:3 on the host, and have friends run netduke32 -net -n0 host1, replacing host1 with the host’s IP address or hostname. Internet hosts normally forward UDP port 23513 to the computer running the game.
The short answer: use NetDuke32, not mainline EDuke32 multiplayer
EDuke32 remains the modern source port and engine for Duke Nukem 3D, but the current EDukeWiki multiplayer documentation says that multiplayer in the mainline EDuke32 build is broken. For an online game, that documentation points players to NetDuke32, a multiplayer-focused fork with revised networking.

All players should use the same NetDuke32 release and have compatible Duke Nukem 3D data. The engine itself is open source; the commercial game’s artwork, sounds, maps and other content are still proprietary. You therefore need a legal copy of the game data, or the supported shareware data, before launching a match.
For a direct Internet connection, the host starts the server with netduke32 -net -n0:3. A joining player starts netduke32 -net -n0 host1, substituting the host’s reachable IP address or hostname. NetDuke32’s documented default listening port is UDP 23513. Forward that UDP port from the host’s router to the host PC and allow the program through the computer’s firewall.

What every player needs
| Requirement | Host | Joining player | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| NetDuke32 executable | Required | Required | Mainline EDuke32 multiplayer is currently documented as non-functional; NetDuke32 is the recommended fork. |
| Duke 3D data | DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS, or supported shareware data |
Matching legally obtained data | The executable does not include the proprietary game assets. |
| Network address | Local address for router forwarding; public address or hostname for friends | Host’s reachable public address or hostname | The client command must know where to connect. |
| UDP 23513 | Allow in the operating-system firewall and normally forward on the router | Usually no inbound forwarding | This is NetDuke32’s documented default listening port. |
| Compatible versions | Use the same NetDuke32 build and data set as the group | Use the same build and data set as the host | Different files can prevent a connection or cause a desynchronised game. |
EDuke32 and NetDuke32: which one should you run?
They are related, but they answer different needs. EDuke32 is the broad source-port project: it supplies a modern executable for running Duke Nukem 3D and its expansions, supports user-made content, and has an open engine source. NetDuke32 is the fork to choose when multiplayer reliability and network behaviour are the priority.
| Feature | Mainline EDuke32 | NetDuke32 |
|---|---|---|
| Current multiplayer status | EDukeWiki currently documents multiplayer as broken. | Recommended by the multiplayer documentation for online play. |
| Networking goal | General source-port functionality; no working mainline multiplayer path is documented. | Advertises improved networking and smoother prediction. |
| Desynchronisation and input feel | Not a dependable choice for an online match while the documented multiplayer issue remains. | Designed to reduce the problems associated with the original implementation and provide more responsive input prediction. |
| Player capacity | The original Duke 3D multiplayer limit was eight players. | Project documentation advertises support for up to 16 players. |
| Score display | No working mainline multiplayer experience is established in the current documentation. | Documentation advertises clearer scoreboards. |
| Setup complexity | Installing the engine is straightforward, but it does not solve the current multiplayer problem. | Requires the same game-data setup plus a host command, client command and, for most Internet hosts, router/firewall configuration. |
“Up to 16 players” is a NetDuke32 project capability claim, not a guarantee that every map, connection or home router will perform equally well with 16 people. Start with a small group, confirm that the connection and data files work, then add players.
Get the game data legally
Download and extract NetDuke32, then place the required data files beside the executable. The installation guidance identifies Steam, GOG, original CD releases and the shareware version as supported sources. A commercial installation normally supplies the files DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS; the shareware release supplies the supported shareware data instead.
Do not assume that downloading an engine grants permission to redistribute the game’s content. The EDuke32 engine source is open, while the commercial artwork, sounds, maps and other game content remain proprietary. Each participant should obtain the data through a legitimate copy or the supported shareware release. Do not send your commercial .GRP or .RTS files to friends.

Check the files before troubleshooting networking
- Confirm that the filenames are exactly
DUKE3D.GRPandDUKE.RTSfor the commercial data set; Windows may hide the extension. - Keep the files in the folder that NetDuke32 actually scans, normally the folder containing the executable unless you deliberately configured another location.
- Make sure every player is using the same edition’s data. A host with one data set and a client with another can fail before joining or behave unpredictably after connection.
- Do not place the files inside an extra nested folder created by an unzip utility. If the executable is in
Duke3Din,for example, the data files should be where that build expects them, not in an unrelated sibling directory. - Launch the program once locally. If it reports missing data, fix the file location before changing ports or router settings.
Install NetDuke32 on each computer
- Obtain the NetDuke32 package and extract it to a folder you control. A simple per-game folder avoids confusion with another EDuke32 installation.
- Copy your legally obtained
DUKE3D.GRPandDUKE.RTSfiles, or the supported shareware data, into the location used by that NetDuke32 build. - Run NetDuke32 without the network options once. This confirms that the executable starts and that it can see the game data.
- Record the exact executable name and folder path. The commands in this guide assume the executable is called
netduke32; on some systems you may need to run the executable from its folder or include its full path. - Give every participant the same NetDuke32 version and agree on the same data set before attempting an online game.
If double-clicking the executable closes immediately, start it from a terminal in its folder so that an error remains visible. A missing data file is an installation problem; a timeout after the game starts is usually a network or address problem.
Host an Internet game
1. Find the host computer’s local address
The router must send incoming UDP 23513 traffic to the computer running NetDuke32. Find that computer’s private IPv4 address in the operating system’s network settings and reserve it in the router if your router supports address reservations. A forwarding rule pointed at an address that changes later will stop working.
2. Forward the documented port
Create a router port-forwarding rule for UDP 23513 to the host computer’s private address. NetDuke32’s documented default is UDP 23513; do not create only a TCP rule. If your router asks for an external and internal port, use 23513 for both unless you have intentionally changed the game’s listening configuration.
3. Allow the executable through the host firewall
When the operating system asks whether to allow NetDuke32 on a network, permit it on the network profile you are actually using. If you use a manual firewall rule, allow inbound UDP 23513 for the NetDuke32 executable. A router rule cannot help if the computer silently drops the packet.

4. Start the host
Open a terminal in the NetDuke32 folder and run:
netduke32 -net -n0:3
The documented command uses the -net network mode and the -n0:3 network parameter. Keep the host process running while friends connect. If you use a shortcut or launcher, place the same options in its command-line or launch-arguments field.
5. Give friends the right address
Friends connecting over the Internet need the host’s public IP address or a hostname that resolves to it, not the host’s private address such as an address used only inside the home network. Tell them the port only if you have changed the default; otherwise the documented port is UDP 23513. Do not publish your address in a public forum when a private group message is sufficient.
Join a friend’s game
- Install the same NetDuke32 release and place the required legal data files in the expected folder.
- Verify that NetDuke32 starts locally before trying to connect.
- Open a terminal in the NetDuke32 folder.
- Run the documented client form, replacing
host1with the host’s public IP address or hostname:
netduke32 -net -n0 host1
For example, if the host gives you a hostname, use that hostname in place of host1; do not include the angle brackets. If the host is on the same home network, the host can provide the private local address instead, but an Internet friend normally needs the public address or a hostname that points to it.

What NetDuke32 changes in practice
Prediction and input responsiveness
NetDuke32 documentation advertises smoother prediction and improved networking. Prediction lets a local player’s input appear responsive while network updates are exchanged; it does not remove the effect of a poor connection. You can still see delayed corrections or players jumping if packets are delayed or lost.
Desynchronisation risk
The original multiplayer implementation is the reason the engine choice matters. NetDuke32 is intended to improve the network path and reduce desynchronisation behaviour, but the project documentation does not promise that every combination of map, connection and player count is flawless. If a match repeatedly diverges, first make all players use identical builds and data, then reduce the number of players and test a simple session.
Player count
Original Duke 3D multiplayer supported eight players. NetDuke32 advertises up to 16, doubling that original limit. Treat 16 as a ceiling, not a requirement: a host’s upload capacity, router and the participants’ connections determine whether a large session is comfortable.

NetDuke32 documentation also advertises clearer scoreboards. This affects how easily players can follow a match, but it does not replace the need for a working connection or matching game files.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game says data is missing
- Check that
DUKE3D.GRPandDUKE.RTSare in the folder scanned by NetDuke32. - Check spelling and extensions. A file accidentally named
DUKE3D.GRP.GRPis not the same filename. - Confirm that you copied the files from a supported legal source and did not copy only a shortcut to another installation.
- Run the executable from its own folder so relative paths resolve as expected.
Friends cannot connect at all
- Confirm that the host ran
netduke32 -net -n0:3and left it running. - Confirm that the client used
netduke32 -net -n0 host1with the current public IP or hostname, without a typographical error. - Check that the router forwards UDP 23513 to the host’s current private address.
- Check the host computer’s firewall for an allow rule covering NetDuke32 and UDP 23513.
- Test from a second network, such as a friend’s connection. A local test can appear to work while an Internet test exposes a forwarding or upstream-network restriction.
The client connects locally but not from the Internet
This pattern usually means the game and local network are functioning, while the Internet path is not. Recheck that the remote player is using the public address, that the forwarding target has not changed, and that the firewall rule applies to the active network profile. If the router has separate “internal” and “external” fields, verify that both use 23513 and that the protocol is UDP.
Players connect but the match desynchronises
- Stop the session and compare NetDuke32 versions on every computer.
- Compare the exact game-data files and edition; do not mix commercial and shareware data in one session unless the project explicitly supports that combination.
- Remove optional modifications while testing so that everyone is using the same baseline content.
- Try fewer players. NetDuke32 advertises up to 16, but a smaller group can reveal whether the problem is scale-related.
- Start a fresh host process after changing files or command-line options.
The command is not recognised
The terminal is probably not in the folder containing the executable. Change to that folder first, use the executable’s full path, or create a shortcut whose target includes the arguments. The command shown in this guide is the documented syntax; retain the hyphens and the colon in -n0:3.
A router will not accept the forwarding rule
Some router interfaces require a service name, local address, protocol, start port and end port. Create a custom service for UDP, set both port fields to 23513, and select the host computer’s private address. If the router offers separate IPv4 and IPv6 forwarding pages, use the address family supported by your network and the game setup; the documented NetDuke32 default is the UDP port, not a particular router brand or interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSecurity and reliability checklist for the host
- Forward only UDP 23513, not a broad port range.
- Allow only the NetDuke32 program and the necessary network profile in the host firewall.
- Keep the router and operating system updated before exposing a game port.
- Share the public address privately with the invited players.
- Use a stable private address or router reservation so the forwarding rule continues to target the host.
- Close NetDuke32 and remove the forwarding rule when you no longer plan to host, if you do not want the port exposed.
- Agree on a single NetDuke32 build and data set before the session starts.
A repeatable setup for a group
- Each player obtains Duke Nukem 3D legally or uses the supported shareware data and confirms the required files are present.
- Each player installs the same NetDuke32 build and launches it once without network arguments.
- The host assigns or confirms a stable private address, forwards UDP 23513 and permits NetDuke32 through the firewall.
- The host starts
netduke32 -net -n0:3. - The host sends the public IP address or hostname to the group through a private channel.
- Each client runs
netduke32 -net -n0 host1, replacinghost1with that address. - If the first session is stable, add more players gradually. NetDuke32 advertises support for up to 16, while the original game supported eight.
- If anyone disconnects or desynchronises, stop adding variables: compare versions and data, retest with fewer players, and recheck the host’s UDP forwarding and firewall.
Bottom line
For online Duke Nukem 3D in 2026, install NetDuke32 alongside legally obtained game data rather than relying on mainline EDuke32 multiplayer, which current documentation lists as broken. Host with netduke32 -net -n0:3, connect with netduke32 -net -n0 host1, and prepare UDP port 23513 on the host’s router and firewall. Matching files and builds are as important as the port rule: they are the foundation for a session that starts cleanly and stays synchronised.
