The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition is not compatible with the add-on, so its practical options are digital downloads or another disc-capable PS5.

Check your PS5 model before buying anything
The model number is the first thing to verify because the phrase “PS5 Digital Edition” describes more than one hardware generation. A detachable drive is not a universal upgrade for every disc-free PS5. Look for the CFI model code on the console’s label, packaging, or system information, then compare it with Sony’s current regional product and support pages.

Model-group names can differ between regional product pages. Sony’s UK support information explicitly identifies the original CFI-1000 limitation and the compatible CFI-ZDD1 series, while the US overview uses the newer slim and Pro group descriptions. If your code does not clearly match one of the supported groups, check the current Sony listing for your country before placing an order.
Use Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive
The supported accessory is Sony’s detachable Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1. It is a separate purchase rather than an item included with every Digital Edition console. The drive physically attaches to eligible PS5 hardware; it is not a generic USB optical drive.
Sony describes the accessory as supporting PS5 games on Blu-ray and a broad catalog of supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray. It also supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. That wording matters: it does not mean every PS4 title is guaranteed to work, and it does not establish support for every possible disc format.

What to confirm before purchasing
- Read the model code: Confirm that the console is in the CFI-2000, CFI-2100, or CFI-7000 groups covered by Sony’s current information.
- Exclude the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition: That model does not accept the detachable drive for games or media.
- Allow for a separate purchase: The CFI-ZDD1 is sold separately from the compatible console.
- Plan an internet connection: Sony requires internet access to pair the drive and console during initial setup.
- Check the local listing: Regional compatibility descriptions, availability, and stock can change, so use the Sony page for your market.
- Decide whether you need media playback: If you also want films, the drive’s listed 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD support may be important in addition to game discs.
There is no reliable universal price to quote because pricing and availability vary by region and date. Treat any retailer price as current only for that seller and location, and verify the model compatibility immediately before checkout.
How to install the detachable drive
Sony’s illustrated guide is the authority for the exact cover shape, console orientation, and placement of the feet for your model. The broad procedure is as follows:
- Shut the PS5 down completely. Do not begin with the console in Rest Mode. Wait until the power indicator shows that the system is fully off.
- Disconnect the cables. Unplug the AC power cable and remove the HDMI and other connected accessories so the console can be handled safely.
- Let the console cool. If it has been running, give it time to cool before removing any cover. This reduces the chance of handling a hot surface or moving the console while warm.
- Place the console as shown in Sony’s guide. Use a clean, stable surface and follow the guide’s orientation for your specific PS5 model. The cover-release points differ between model groups.
- Remove the designated cover. Take off only the panel identified in the setup instructions; do not force another panel or pry at an unmarked seam.
- Remove the designated feet. The slim and Pro installation instructions identify the feet that must be removed before the drive is attached. Keep the parts in a safe place in case you later remove the drive.
- Attach the CFI-ZDD1 drive. Align it with the mounting points shown in the guide and press it into position as instructed. It should sit flush and secure rather than requiring force.
- Reinstall the appropriate cover and feet. Use the parts and orientation specified for your model. If a panel does not align, stop and check the guide instead of tightening or pushing harder.
- Reconnect the cables and power on. Once the drive is physically installed, reconnect the AC and display cables and start the console.
- Complete the pairing process. Connect the PS5 to the internet and follow the on-screen setup prompt. The first pairing associates the detachable drive with that console.
The full diagrams and model-specific handling instructions are in Sony’s official setup guide. Use that page rather than relying on a photograph or a procedure written for a different PS5 revision.
Internet is required for the first pairing
Sony’s product and support wording is explicit: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” This is a setup requirement, not a promise that the console can complete first-time pairing offline.

Connect the console to the internet before beginning the pairing step. Either Wi-Fi or a wired connection can be used if it gives the PS5 working internet access. After the drive and console have been paired, Sony’s cited wording does not state that an internet connection is required every time you insert a disc. Do not, however, skip the initial connection or assume that an offline first setup will work.
If pairing cannot complete, leave the drive installed, confirm that the console actually has internet access, restart the console, and retry the setup prompt. If the prompt never appears, shut the system down, unplug it, let it cool, and reseat the drive using the illustrated instructions before trying again.
Playing a physical PS5 or PS4 game
Once installation and pairing are complete, insert a compatible game disc into the attached drive and use the game tile that appears on the PS5 home screen. The drive is intended for PS5 game discs and for a broad catalog of supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray.

Check the game’s current PlayStation compatibility information when a particular PS4 title matters to you.

A physical disc is still required whenever you want to launch the disc-based version. Installing game data to the console does not turn a disc license into a digital license; keep the required disc available for the console’s normal disc check.
Using the drive for movies and other disc media
The CFI-ZDD1 is not limited to games. Sony lists playback for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media. This makes the accessory useful if you are replacing an older disc-capable console or want one device for both games and films.
Do not expand that list into a claim that the drive plays every optical format. Sony’s published compatibility wording covers the formats above, and its support pages should be your reference for a particular disc type or regional edition.

What to do if your console is incompatible
If the label identifies an original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition, do not attempt to force a CFI-ZDD1 onto it. Sony’s support information does not list that model as compatible, and the original Digital Edition remains an all-digital console for PlayStation Store downloads.
Your realistic choices are:
- Buy digital editions: Purchase games through the PlayStation Store and download them to the console.
- Use another disc-capable PS5: A PS5 that already includes a drive, or a compatible model fitted with the CFI-ZDD1, can run your physical library.
- Keep both systems: The CFI-1000 can remain a digital-only console while the disc-capable PS5 handles physical games and media.
The official pages reviewed for this topic do not support the idea that plugging a generic external USB optical drive into a PS5 will make PS5 game discs playable. Avoid spending money on an unverified USB workaround.

The table separates two decisions that are often confused: whether a console can accept the detachable drive, and whether a particular game or media disc is supported. A compatible model solves the first question; the title and format determine the second.
Troubleshooting installation and playback
The drive does not appear after installation
- Confirm the console model again. A CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot be upgraded with this drive.
- Power the PS5 off completely, unplug it, and let it cool.
- Remove and reinstall the designated cover and drive using Sony’s model-specific diagrams.
- Check that the drive is seated flush and that no cover or foot is preventing proper alignment.
- Reconnect the cables, start the console, and check for the setup prompt.
Pairing stops or never completes
- Verify that the PS5 has working internet access; Sony requires internet for the initial drive-console pairing.
- Retry after restarting the console and reconnecting to the network.
- If the prompt is still absent, repeat the physical installation checks before assuming the drive is defective.
A disc is not recognized
- Confirm that the disc is a supported PS5 game, a supported PS4 Blu-ray title, or one of Sony’s listed 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD formats.
- Do not assume that every PS4 game is supported; the official wording refers to a broad catalog of supported titles.
- Inspect the disc for dirt or damage and try another known-compatible disc to distinguish a title issue from a drive or installation issue.
The panel or feet will not fit
Stop rather than applying pressure. The covers and feet are model-specific, and the setup guide shows the correct orientation. Shut the console down, disconnect it, and compare each part with the diagrams before continuing.
Regional listings and future model changes
PS5 model groups and product descriptions can change as new hardware revisions appear. A US page may organize the Digital Edition by CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups, while another regional support page may present the same accessory with a different grouping or additional model codes.
Use the code printed on your own console, then open the current Sony support page for your country. If the local page and a retailer listing disagree, treat Sony’s current support information as the deciding reference and ask the retailer to confirm the exact model compatibility before purchase.
Bottom line for disc owners
The practical method is simple when the hardware is eligible: identify a supported PS5 model, buy Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive, install it with the official illustrated procedure, connect the console to the internet for first-time pairing, and then use compatible game or media discs. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition is the important exception; it cannot be converted into a disc console with this accessory.
