To play Diablo II: Resurrected in VR, install the unofficial D2R VR mod alongside a compatible Resurrected build, D2RLoader, ReShade with depth support, and (for headset play) BodyWalk with FlatVR and its Game Link plugin. Launch through D2R_VR_Settings.exe, select the first-person view with F4, and keep the game strictly offline and single-player. The project labels first person an early preview: it works, but weapon alignment and aiming are not consistently polished.
This guide covers the documented setup, the settings that make the stereo view render correctly, controller actions, compatibility limits, and the safer flat-monitor alternative.

What “Diablo II in VR” means here
D2R VR is a community mod for Diablo II: Resurrected, the modern remaster. It is not a VR mod for the original 2000 release of Diablo II. The project does not include Blizzard game files, is not made or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment, and requires a legitimate installed copy of Resurrected.

- Overhead stereo: the familiar Diablo perspective rendered for both eyes.
- Third person: a camera positioned behind your character.
- Floor or mixed-reality view: the game is placed on the floor in your physical space.
- First person: your controllers represent the hero’s arms and weapons. This is the mode most people mean by “first-person D2R VR,” but the project documents it as a preview rather than a finished replacement for every style of play.
D2R VR can also run on a normal monitor with mouse and keyboard. That flat mode is useful for testing the installation or playing without a headset, and it does not require BodyWalk or FlatVR.

Requirements before you install anything
Use this checklist before changing the game installation. The project’s documented versions are specific, and VR injection tools are sensitive to updates.
| Requirement | What the project documents | When it is needed |
|---|---|---|
| Game | A legitimate PC installation of Diablo II: Resurrected | Always |
| Game build | Resurrected build 3.3.93787 in the documented pairing |
Compatibility reference; newer or different builds may need address changes |
| Loader | D2RLoader 1.3.1 |
To launch the injected mod build |
| ReShade | ReShade with add-on support and the Generic Depth add-on enabled | Required by the VR presentation |
| BodyWalk | Version 1.78 or later, including FlatVR and the Game Link plugin |
Headset play |
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 x64, as specified by the BodyWalkVR listing | Headset setup |
| PC VR headset | Any headset supported by your PC VR runtime; the project does not name a required model | Headset play only |
The headset is optional. If you only want a monitor, keyboard, and mouse experience, install the flat-mode components described by the project and omit the headset-specific BodyWalk setup.
Check the version pairing first
The README’s documented combination is Resurrected 3.3.93787 with D2RLoader 1.3.1. It warns that other game builds require their memory addresses to be checked. Do not assume a current automatic game update remains compatible. If your executable reports another build, consult the project’s current compatibility notes before attempting to launch; a loader made for a different address layout can fail or simply leave the game unmodded.

The project supplies setup and installer materials for placing its files in the game directory. Keep the following procedure in order and close the game before copying or replacing files.
- Install or update Diablo II: Resurrected. Confirm that it starts normally without the VR mod. This gives you a clean baseline if troubleshooting is needed.
- Install the documented loader. For the README’s example pairing, that is
D2RLoader 1.3.1for Resurrected build3.3.93787. If the project lists a different pairing when you install, use the live pairing rather than forcing these older numbers. - Install ReShade with add-on support. Enable the Generic Depth add-on. Standard shader-only ReShade installation is not the same thing as the add-on-capable installation described by D2R VR.
- Install BodyWalk 1.78 or later for headset use. Make sure FlatVR and the Game Link plugin are included. These are separate products from D2R VR and have their own licensing and version requirements.
- Run the D2R VR setup or installer. The project places its settings program,
D2R_VR_Settings.exe, besideD2R.exeand creates a desktop shortcut. If the settings program is not in that directory, the components are probably in the wrong folder. - Start with the headset and its PC VR runtime ready. For flat play, leave the headset disconnected or simply use the monitor path; BodyWalk is not required for that mode.
Do not copy Blizzard game files from another installation or download a repack that claims to contain them. D2R VR states that it ships none of Blizzard’s files; you provide the legitimate game installation yourself.
Configure Resurrected for stereo rendering
Before launching through the mod, open Diablo II: Resurrected’s video options and apply the project’s documented values. These settings are recommendations for this mod’s stereo rendering, not universal VR rules.

| Game option | Set it to | Why it matters in the project instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical Sync | Off | Prevents the game’s normal synchronization from interfering with the mod’s frame timing. |
| Frame cap | 180 | The README explains this as 90 frames per eye. |
| Anti-aliasing | FXAA or MSAA | Use one of these rather than TAA for the documented setup. |
| TAA | Do not use | Explicitly excluded by the project’s instructions. |
| DLSS | On or off | The README allows either setting. |
| Ambient occlusion | Medium | The project lists this level in its setup guidance. |
Next, make the game image square. A headset view expects a square source window in this setup:

- FlatVR method: create a square virtual monitor in FlatVR and run Resurrected inside it.
A non-square window can produce an incorrectly shaped or poorly aligned view even when the rest of the installation is correct.
Launch D2R VR and choose a view
- Open
D2R_VR_Settings.exefrom the game directory or use the desktop shortcut created during setup. - In the settings program, choose Home > Launch Diablo II (D2RLoader). Launching the normal game shortcut instead bypasses the documented loader path.
- Once the game is running, use
F1throughF4to select the documented views.F4is first person. - Use
F12to cycle through the available views if you prefer cycling rather than selecting a specific function key.
If the game opens on the monitor but not in the headset, first check that BodyWalk, FlatVR, and Game Link are running and that the square display path is active. If the game launches normally with no altered view, recheck the loader/game-build pairing and confirm that ReShade was installed with add-on support.
How first-person mode works
First person is the most experimental of the documented views. The hero’s arms and weapons are represented through the VR controllers, and attacks are tied to hand direction or gesture mappings rather than only to a traditional mouse cursor.
Ranged attacks and spells
Bows and spells use the right trigger. The attack follows the direction of the hand, so point the controller where you want the projectile or spell to travel before pressing the trigger. This is a controller-direction system, not a guarantee that every projectile will align perfectly with the center of your headset view.
Melee attacks
Melee uses the Strike Zone configured in BodyWalk Mapping. Open BodyWalk’s mapping interface and verify that the strike area is comfortable before entering a difficult fight. A strike zone that is too narrow, too far forward, or mapped to an awkward controller motion can make melee feel unresponsive even when the mod is functioning.

Potions
Potions use reach gestures mapped to the belt. The exact reach is controlled by your BodyWalk mapping, so adjust the belt gesture for a movement you can repeat without losing your grip or turning away from the play area.
Inventory, map, weapon sets, and recentering
Controller inputs provide access to inventory, the map, weapon-set swapping, and recentering. Because individual mappings can vary with your BodyWalk configuration, test each action in town before relying on it in combat. Recenter whenever your seated or standing position changes, or when the game’s virtual orientation no longer matches your physical facing.
Expect calibration problems
The project explicitly warns that weapon positioning and aim may be off for many weapons. It points to a manual Weapon Adjust setting for correction. Treat that setting as per-weapon calibration rather than a one-time fix: a position that looks right for a bow may not suit a sword, staff, or another weapon type.
Because first person is labeled a preview, overhead, third-person, or floor view may be more practical for a full campaign session. You can switch views with the function keys without uninstalling anything.
Headset mode versus flat-monitor mode
There are two documented ways to use D2R VR. They are not competing headset models; they are different hardware and software paths.
| Choice | What you need | What you get | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC VR headset | Resurrected, D2RLoader, ReShade with Generic Depth, BodyWalk 1.78 or later, FlatVR, Game Link, and a compatible PC VR headset | Stereo VR views, floor or mixed-reality placement, and controller-driven first person | More components to keep compatible; first person remains a preview with weapon-alignment limits |
| Flat monitor | Resurrected and the mod’s flat-mode components; mouse and keyboard | The mod’s views on a normal display without a headset | No headset immersion or controller-based first-person interaction |
If you are deciding whether to buy VR hardware solely for this mod, the flat path lets you confirm that the software launches before adding headset-specific complexity. The project does not require a particular headset brand or model.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The mod does not load at all
- Confirm that you launched through Home > Launch Diablo II (D2RLoader), not the ordinary game shortcut.
- Check that
D2RLoader 1.3.1matches the documented Resurrected build3.3.93787, or verify the address information for your current build. - Make sure
D2R_VR_Settings.exeis besideD2R.exe, indicating that the installer targeted the actual game directory. - Verify that ReShade was installed with add-on support and that Generic Depth is enabled.
The game is on the monitor but not in the headset
- Start BodyWalk, FlatVR, and the Game Link plugin before launching the game.
- Check that your PC VR runtime sees the headset and that the FlatVR virtual display is configured if you are using that route.
- Use the square-window method or a square FlatVR monitor; a normal widescreen window does not follow the project’s documented layout.
The image is stretched or the view is misaligned
- Make the source window exactly square.
- Turn Vertical Sync off and use the project’s 180 frame cap.
- Replace TAA with FXAA or MSAA, then restart through the loader.
- Use the mod’s recenter control after changing your physical position.
Weapons point in the wrong place
- Remember that F4 first person is a preview and that the project warns of weapon-specific positioning and aim errors.
- Use the manual Weapon Adjust setting.
- Test the adjusted weapon in a safe area before entering combat.
- Switch to overhead or third person when a weapon remains impractical.
Controls do not respond as expected
- Check BodyWalk Mapping for the Strike Zone and belt reach gestures.
- Confirm the right trigger is assigned for bows and spells.
- Test inventory, map, weapon-set swap, and recenter actions in town.
Online safety, licensing, and support boundaries
The project’s warning is explicit: offline single-player only. It says that injecting code into the game online can get the account banned. Do not take a modded installation into Battle.net or another online session, and do not interpret a successful local launch as permission for online use.
D2R VR identifies itself as MIT-licensed and says it contains none of Blizzard’s game files. BodyWalk and FlatVR are separate products and are not covered by the D2R VR project’s license, so their own terms apply. The project describes D2R VR as free, without paywalls or exclusive builds; it mentions optional Patreon support for development, not a required purchase.
Compatibility is the main moving target. Game patches, loader addresses, ReShade add-on behavior, headset runtimes, and BodyWalk versions can change independently. Before reinstalling after a Resurrected update, check the project’s current documentation for a supported build and loader pairing rather than assuming the numbers in this guide remain current.
Is first-person D2R VR worth using?
Use it when you specifically want to experiment with controller-aimed spells, bow attacks, physical melee gestures, and an embodied view of Sanctuary. Start with a short offline session, calibrate Weapon Adjust and BodyWalk Mapping, and keep another view available for weapons that do not align well.
For a dependable long play session, overhead stereo or third person may be the better choice. They are part of the same mod and avoid making every weapon depend on a preview-stage first-person calibration. The flat monitor mode is the simplest way to play without a headset, while headset mode is the route that supplies the immersive controller interaction.
