To play Diablo in VR, use D2R VR, a community mod for Diablo II: Resurrected. It adds stereo overhead play, a free third-person camera, a mixed-reality floor view and an experimental first-person mode. The documented setup targets Diablo II: Resurrected build 3.3.93787 with D2RLoader 1.3.1, ReShade with its Generic Depth add-on, and—when a headset is used—BodyWalk 1.78 or newer with FlatVR and the Game Link plugin.
D2R VR is an offline, single-player modification. Its documentation warns: “Offline single-player only. Injecting code into the game online can get the account banned.” Keep it away from Battle.net or any other online session. The project is independent, open source under the MIT license, and does not include the game itself. Start with the official D2R VR repository and README, then follow the version and loader requirements before launching.

What D2R VR changes
D2R VR is a plugin for the 3D remake, Diablo II: Resurrected. It is not a VR edition of the original 2000 release, and it does not replace the game’s files. The mod changes how the game is rendered and controlled so a compatible PC VR setup can display the world stereoscopically and accept motion-controller input.
The project supports four camera modes. F1 keeps the familiar Diablo perspective but renders it separately for each eye. F2 places a free camera behind the hero for a conventional third-person view. F3 turns the battlefield into a floor-level diorama that you can look down into and walk around. F4 moves toward first person, with the character’s arms following the controllers. F4 remains experimental, so the other three modes are the safer choices for a complete session.

You can also run the mod on a normal monitor with a mouse and keyboard when no headset is connected. That makes flat-screen testing useful before you troubleshoot VR hardware, although a monitor session does not by itself verify that your headset, runtime or controller mapping is ready.
Requirements before you install
Check these items first. The project’s current README, accessed October 13, 2026, identifies the following versions and components.

You need a legitimate PC installation of Diablo II: Resurrected separately; the mod’s repository does not supply game data. A PC VR headset is the relevant hardware category for headset play, but the project documentation does not certify a particular headset model. Compatibility can therefore depend on the headset runtime, FlatVR configuration and controller support in addition to the mod’s own files.

The exact installer and current files are linked from the project’s repository. Use that source rather than an unofficial mirror, because the game build and loader version are part of the compatibility contract.
- Confirm the game build. Install or update Diablo II: Resurrected, then verify that it reports build 3.3.93787. If your installation is on another build, do not assume the plugin will work unchanged; the README says addresses may need to be checked and that the plugin reports address information in its log.
- Install D2RLoader 1.3.1. The loader must be present before the game can load the VR plugin. Keep the loader version aligned with the documented game build.
- Install D2R VR. Download the ready installer linked by the official README and place the resulting files where the installer specifies. The project is MIT-licensed and does not bundle Diablo II: Resurrected.
- Set up ReShade. Use a ReShade installation that supports add-ons, then enable the Generic Depth add-on. A standard ReShade installation without add-on support does not satisfy the documented requirement.
- Add the headset components. For VR, install BodyWalk 1.78 or later, FlatVR and BodyWalk’s Game Link plugin. These are not optional if you want headset tracking and controller input through the documented path.
- Open the settings utility. Run
D2R_VR_Settings.exefrom the same directory asD2R.exe. The utility is intended to configure the mod while the game is running, so launch the game and then adjust settings as directed by the README.
Keep a copy of the README nearby during setup. If a loader or plugin reports a different game address, record that message rather than forcing the injection to continue. A mismatch can produce a non-working camera or prevent the game from starting.

Start a safe offline session
Before launching with code injection, sign out of any online mode and use an offline, single-player character. The project’s warning is stronger than a general “online play is unsupported” note: it specifically says injecting code online can get the account banned. Treat that as a hard boundary.
- Close the game and disable any automatic online session or multiplayer selection.
- Start the loader and the game through your normal local installation path.
- Confirm that you are entering an offline single-player game before loading a character.
- Only then start D2R VR and the headset software.
- When finished, exit the game before switching back to an online session.
The project is not made, endorsed or supported by Blizzard Entertainment. If you need online characters, seasonal progression or multiplayer, use an unmodified game installation instead of attempting to mix the two environments.

F1: stereo overhead
Press F1 for the closest match to ordinary Diablo II: Resurrected play. The familiar overhead camera is rendered separately for the left and right eyes, giving depth without asking you to learn a new combat perspective. This is the sensible starting point if you want to test stereoscopic rendering, map readability and controller locomotion while preserving the game’s established view.
F2: free third person
F2 releases the viewpoint from the fixed overhead position and places it behind the hero. It can make the character and nearby terrain feel larger in VR, while still leaving the game’s combat and targeting conventions intact. Because it uses the same BodyWalk gamepad mapping as F1 and F3, you can switch views without relearning basic movement.
F3: floor diorama and mixed reality
F3 places the game world on the floor. You can look down into the scene and physically move around it, which is useful for inspecting a dungeon layout or watching combat from different angles. It is not automatically transparent mixed reality: the documented method requires a chosen background color in D2R VR Settings and Virtual Desktop passthrough configured to key out that color.

That color-key workflow depends on your headset runtime and passthrough support. The README documents the configuration, but it does not establish that every headset exposes the same controls or produces identical results. If passthrough is unavailable, F3 still functions as a virtual floor scene without a real-world background.

F4: experimental first person
F4 puts the hero’s arms under controller influence and assigns attacks, spells and other actions to motion-oriented controls. However, the project explicitly says: “F4 is an early look, not a finished way to play the game: the weapons are not calibrated yet, so how a weapon sits in the hands and where it aims may be off for many of them.” Use the Weapon Adjust setting as a manual workaround when available, but expect to tune individual weapons and encounter aiming errors.
Do not judge the entire mod by F4. F1, F2 and F3 are the documented alternatives when you want a more dependable playthrough, while F4 is best treated as an experiment.
Learn the controller mappings
F1 through F3
In the first three views, BodyWalk presents VR controllers as an Xbox-style gamepad. The README lists these mappings:
- Left stick: walk.
- Left grip plus left-stick direction: send D-pad directions.
- Left-stick click: open the map.
- Hold the left stick down: open the menu.
- Hold the right stick down: recenter the view.
Because the game receives gamepad-style input in these modes, movement and menu actions behave more like a traditional controller than like direct hand interaction with every interface element. Practice recentering before a long session, especially after changing your physical position or switching between F1, F2 and F3.

F4 first-person controls
F4 uses a different scheme:
- Right trigger: ranged attacks and spells.
- Configured Strike Zone: melee attacks.
- Gestures: belt potions.
- Hold the left stick: inventory.
- Left-stick click: map.
- Right-stick click: swap weapon set.
The Strike Zone and Weapon Adjust settings matter more in F4 than in the other views. A poorly placed Strike Zone can make melee attacks uncomfortable, while weapon calibration affects where a held weapon appears and where the game thinks it is aiming.
Set graphics for stereo rendering
The README recommends a small group of graphics settings for its documented stereo configuration:
- Turn VSync off.
- Set the frame cap to 180 frames, described as 90 frames per eye.
- Use FXAA or MSAA instead of TAA.
- DLSS may be enabled or disabled according to the current README; do not apply older advice that treats it as permanently forbidden.
These are configuration recommendations, not a published performance benchmark. Your actual frame rate and comfort will depend on the PC, headset resolution, runtime and scene complexity. If the image stutters, first verify that the cap, VSync and anti-aliasing choices match the documented setup before changing several variables at once.
Make the image square
For a square headset picture, the project suggests running the game windowed and resizing it, or using a square-resolution virtual monitor in FlatVR. This changes the shape of the rendered window; it does not guarantee a particular field of view or image quality on every headset.
Configure F3 passthrough
- Open
D2R_VR_Settings.exebesideD2R.exewhile the game is running. - Choose a background color for the F3 scene.
- Open Virtual Desktop’s passthrough settings.
- Use the same color as the key color for the passthrough view.
- Switch to F3 and check whether the game scene sits over the room background.
If the keyed color leaves halos or removes parts of the game, pick a background color that is uncommon in the scene and adjust the runtime’s keying controls. The documented workflow is color-based, so a color that appears frequently in dungeon art can produce unwanted transparency.

Check compatibility when something fails
The plugin loads but the view is wrong
Verify the game build and loader first. D2R VR documents build 3.3.93787 under D2RLoader 1.3.1; another build may move the addresses the plugin expects. Read the plugin log for the reported address information, then compare it with the version you installed instead of repeatedly restarting.
The headset shows no VR scene
Confirm that BodyWalk 1.78 or later, FlatVR and the Game Link plugin are all installed. ReShade must also have add-on support and Generic Depth enabled. A missing depth add-on can leave the game running while the stereo or mixed-reality view has no usable depth information.
Controllers move but buttons do not work
In F1–F3, test the exact gamepad-style actions: left-stick walking, left-stick click for the map, left-stick hold for the menu and right-stick hold for recentering. In F4, test the right trigger, Strike Zone, gestures and stick clicks separately. This distinguishes a general tracking problem from a mode-specific mapping issue.

The picture is stretched or not square
Use a windowed game and resize it, or configure a square-resolution virtual monitor in FlatVR as recommended. Recenter after changing the window or virtual monitor so the headset view is aligned with the new image.
F4 aiming is inaccurate
That behavior is a known limitation of the preview mode rather than proof that your headset is defective. Try Weapon Adjust, test another weapon and switch to F1, F2 or F3 for regular play if the calibration remains distracting.
Use a monitor first if you need to isolate problems
D2R VR can run flat on a monitor with mouse and keyboard when no headset is connected. This gives you a low-complexity way to verify that the loader, game build and plugin are functioning. If the flat session fails, fix the version or installation before adding headset software. If the flat session works but VR does not, concentrate on BodyWalk, FlatVR, Game Link, ReShade add-on support and the headset runtime.
A practical first-session checklist
- Confirm Diablo II: Resurrected build 3.3.93787.
- Confirm D2RLoader 1.3.1.
- Install D2R VR from the official repository’s linked installer.
- Enable ReShade add-on support and Generic Depth.
- For a headset, install BodyWalk 1.78 or later, FlatVR and Game Link.
- Place and run
D2R_VR_Settings.exebesideD2R.exe. - Launch an offline, single-player character only.
- Start with F1, then try F2 and F3.
- Set VSync off, a 180-frame cap and FXAA or MSAA.
- Use F4 only after accepting its weapon-calibration limitations.
What to expect from the project
D2R VR is best understood as a set of camera and input experiments around Diablo II: Resurrected, not as a finished commercial VR conversion. F1 preserves the game’s recognizable overhead structure, F2 offers a trailing third-person view, and F3 turns the world into a walk-around scene. Those modes provide the clearest path to a playable VR session when the documented versions and dependencies are in place.
