How to Play Core Keeper Co-op With Friends

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Core Keeper co-op uses an online host-and-join system. One player starts or loads a world, copies the world’s Game ID from the pause menu, and sends it to friends. Each friend chooses Join Game on the main menu and enters that ID. The host must remain in the world while the ordinary hosted session is running.

This guide explains the exact join flow, which platforms can play together, how the Steam Dedicated Server option changes hosting, and what to check when a friend cannot connect.

How to start a Core Keeper multiplayer game

The standard method is friend-hosted online multiplayer. The player who starts or loads the world becomes its host for that session.

Host: create or load the world

  1. Open Core Keeper and select Start Game from the main menu.
  2. Create a new world or select an existing world to load.
  3. Wait until your character is inside the world.
  4. Open the pause menu. The world’s Game ID appears in the upper-left area.
  5. Use the copy option beside the Game ID, then send the copied ID to the friends you want to invite.

Send the ID through a private channel rather than posting it publicly. Anyone who has the current session ID may be able to attempt to join, so share it only with the people you intend to play with.

Friends: join the host

  1. Launch Core Keeper and stay at the main menu.
  2. Select Join Game.
  3. Enter the Game ID supplied by the host.
  4. Confirm the entry and wait for the connection to complete.

Friends should enter the ID exactly as provided. If the host has copied a new ID or restarted the session, ask for the current value instead of reusing an older message.

The host must stay in the world

In a normal friend-hosted session, the host is not merely the person who sent the invitation. The host’s active game is what keeps that world available for the session. The official FAQ states that the host needs to remain in the world while friends play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the host leaves the world, the stated host condition is no longer met. Friends should therefore finish their activity before the host exits, or move the group to a dedicated-server setup if they need the world to remain available without that player actively hosting from the game.

What this means for a group

  • Choose the player with the most reliable availability to start the world.
  • Tell everyone who the host is before the session begins.
  • Do not treat the Game ID as a permanent invitation; request a fresh ID if the host starts a different session or the previous connection no longer works.
  • Plan a handoff if the original host cannot remain online. The standard flow does not make the world independently available after the host leaves.

Is Core Keeper cross-platform?

Crossplay depends on the platform family. The official FAQ lists Core Keeper on PC through Steam, Epic, GOG and the Microsoft Store, as well as Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Players’ platforms Compatibility described by the official FAQ What to do
Different PC storefronts PC storefronts can play together. Use the normal Game ID and Join Game process.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Cross-generation play is supported within the PlayStation family. Use the Game ID flow after confirming both installations are current.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Cross-generation play is supported within the Xbox family. Use the Game ID flow within the Xbox family.
PC and a console family Cross-platform play between platform families is not supported according to the FAQ. Do not expect a PC player to join a PlayStation, Xbox or Switch-hosted world, or the reverse.
PlayStation and Xbox, Switch and PlayStation, or Switch and Xbox The FAQ does not describe cross-platform play between these families. Keep the group within a compatible family or PC storefront combination.

“Crossplay” is therefore not universal. A group using different PC storefronts is treated differently from a group mixing PC with consoles. Likewise, PS4–PS5 and Xbox One–Xbox Series X|S are same-family, cross-generation examples rather than unrestricted platform-to-platform multiplayer.

Platform support and crossplay rules can change with updates. If your group is arranging a mixed-platform session, check the current official FAQ before buying a copy or scheduling the game.

How to host a Core Keeper Dedicated Server

Core Keeper also has a Core Keeper Dedicated Server tool distributed through Steam. This is intended for a persistent-host arrangement: the server process remains running while players join it, so the original player does not have to stay inside the game as the active host.

The dedicated server is a separate setup from clicking Start Game. It is not public matchmaking, and the Steam tool still requires someone to install, launch and maintain the running server.

Steam setup flow

  1. Open Steam and go to your library’s Tools list.
  2. Find and install Core Keeper Dedicated Server.
  3. Launch the dedicated-server tool.
  4. Wait for the tool to display a Game ID.
  5. Leave the server running while your group plays.
  6. Send that Game ID to the players who should join.
  7. Each player opens Core Keeper, chooses Join Game, and enters the server’s ID.
  8. When the session is over, stop the server through its command window.

The command-window shutdown instruction is specifically described for Windows-oriented use. Operating-system behavior, launch requirements and available options can differ, so read the README included with the installed dedicated-server version before applying Windows-specific steps to another system.

Why the dedicated server changes the routine

Question Friend-hosted world Dedicated server
Must the original player remain in the game world? Yes. The host must remain in the world for the ordinary session. No, provided the dedicated-server process remains running.
Who keeps the world available? The player who started or loaded the world. The person or machine running the dedicated-server tool.
How do players connect? Enter the host’s in-game Game ID through Join Game. Enter the dedicated server’s displayed Game ID through Join Game.
Where is it installed? Inside the normal Core Keeper game. As a separate tool in Steam’s Tools list.
What documentation should be followed? The current in-game menus and FAQ. The README packaged with the installed server version.

Keep the server documentation aligned with the installed version

Publisher patch notes indicate that the dedicated-server README and multiplayer connection behavior have received updates. A guide written for an older build may therefore use outdated wording or assumptions. If the tool’s menus, startup output or connection behavior do not match older instructions, follow the README installed with your current tool and check the latest publisher notes.

Which setup should your group use?

For a one-off session, the normal host flow is the shortest path: start or load the world, copy the Game ID and have everyone join. It avoids installing a separate server tool and works across compatible PC storefronts and same-family console generations.

Rank #2
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

A dedicated server is more appropriate when the group wants the world available while the original player is away from the game. It adds administration: someone must install the Steam tool, keep it running, distribute its Game ID and shut it down correctly. The tool is Steam-based, so it is not the same setup as simply hosting from a console.

  • Choose ordinary hosting when one player can remain in the world for the whole session.
  • Choose a dedicated server when the group needs a separate running process to keep the world available.
  • Check platform compatibility first when players are not all using the same PC storefront or console family.

A reliable first-session checklist

Agree on the host before anyone launches the game. The host should be the person who can stay connected for the planned play period, not necessarily the person who owns the oldest or newest copy. If that person cannot remain available, decide in advance whether another player will host a fresh session or whether someone will run the dedicated-server tool.

  1. Confirm that everyone’s platform combination is supported. Different PC storefronts can play together; console cross-generation play applies within PlayStation or Xbox families.
  2. Have the host enter the world completely before sending an invitation. The Game ID is shown from the pause menu once the world is active.
  3. Copy the ID directly from the game and send the latest value in one clearly labeled message.
  4. Ask each friend to use Join Game from the main menu, rather than trying to load the world through Start Game.
  5. Keep the host in the world while players connect and continue playing.
  6. If the session is restarted, repeat the copy-and-send step. Treat the newly displayed ID as the authoritative one.

This sequence separates three things that are easy to confuse: the saved world, the player acting as host, and the current session’s Game ID. A friend can own the same game and still need the active ID to enter that particular session.

Platform planning details

PC players do not need to buy from the same storefront for the FAQ’s listed PC crossplay support. Steam, Epic, GOG and the Microsoft Store editions are the PC storefronts named in the current platform list. They still use the same basic invitation pattern: one PC player hosts, copies the ID and the others choose Join Game.

Console compatibility is narrower. PS4 and PS5 are a supported same-family, cross-generation pairing, while Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are supported within the Xbox family. Those examples should not be generalized to every console combination. A Switch player, a PlayStation player and an Xbox player cannot be assumed to share one world, and a PC player cannot be assumed to join a console-hosted world.

If you are deciding where to purchase or play, confirm the exact edition and the current FAQ first. The Switch edition is listed as Core Keeper for Nintendo Switch, but availability, packaging and pricing are separate retail questions and are not part of the multiplayer join instructions.

Troubleshooting: when a friend cannot join

The Game ID is rejected or does not work

  • Ask the host to reopen the pause menu and copy the current Game ID again.
  • Confirm that the friend selected Join Game, not Start Game.
  • Have the friend paste or retype the ID exactly, without adding spaces or altering characters.
  • Confirm that the host is still inside the world. A normal hosted session depends on the host remaining there.

The players are on incompatible platforms

Check the platform families before spending time on connection troubleshooting. Different PC storefronts are supported together, and PS4 can play with PS5 while Xbox One can play with Xbox Series X|S. The FAQ does not support cross-platform play between PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch families. An incompatible platform combination cannot be fixed by entering the Game ID again.

The host has left

If the host exited the world, start a new hosted session and distribute the new Game ID, or use a running dedicated server for a setup that does not depend on the original player staying in the game.

The dedicated server behaves differently from a guide

  • Close the tool and read the README included with the installed version.
  • Check current publisher patch notes for changes to server documentation or multiplayer connection behavior.
  • Make sure the server process is still running before anyone attempts to join.
  • Use the Game ID currently displayed by the server rather than an ID from an earlier launch.
  • Stop the server through its command window when finished, following the instructions for your operating system.

Planning a smoother co-op session

Before inviting anyone

  • Decide whether the session will use ordinary hosting or a dedicated server.
  • Confirm that every player is on a compatible platform combination.
  • Choose the host who can remain in the world, unless a dedicated server will handle availability.
  • Agree on where the Game ID will be shared so players can find the latest one quickly.

When players are joining

  1. Have the host enter the world first.
  2. Copy the Game ID from the pause menu or dedicated-server output.
  3. Send the ID only after it is visible for the current session.
  4. Ask each friend to use Join Game and report whether the ID is accepted.
  5. Keep the host in the world until everyone who is expected has joined.

When ending the session

Tell the group before the host leaves. For a dedicated server, use the tool’s documented shutdown process rather than simply abandoning the command window. This makes it clear whether the world is ending because the host exited or because the separate server was intentionally stopped.

Important limits and clarifications

This is online multiplayer, not split-screen co-op

The official FAQ describes Core Keeper’s multiplayer as an online join flow. It does not advertise local split-screen or couch co-op. Do not expect two players to share one console or PC screen through a local multiplayer option described by the game’s current FAQ.

There is no verified player-cap number here

The official FAQ and publisher material used for this guide do not establish a maximum party size. Avoid relying on an uncited number from an older post or a different game version. If your group is larger than usual, verify the current game documentation for the edition and build you are using.

A dedicated server is not a public matchmaking service

The Steam Dedicated Server tool gives a group a separate process to run and a Game ID to share. It does not mean that Core Keeper supplies an automatically managed public server for every player. Someone still has to install, launch, monitor and stop the tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start a multiplayer game in Core Keeper?

Select Start Game, create or load a world, and wait until the character is inside it. Open the pause menu, copy the Game ID shown in the upper-left area and send it to the invited players. They join from the main menu with Join Game.

How do I join a friend’s Core Keeper game?

At the main menu, choose Join Game and enter the Game ID your friend copied from the active world. Enter the current ID exactly. If the host restarted or loaded another session, request the newly displayed ID.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the host have to stay online?

For ordinary friend-hosted play, yes. The host must remain in the world while friends play. If that player leaves, start another hosted session with a new ID or use a running dedicated server for a separate persistent process.

Is Core Keeper local or split-screen co-op?

The current FAQ describes an online multiplayer join flow and does not advertise local split-screen or couch co-op. Plan to connect through a host or dedicated server rather than expecting two players to share one local screen.

Does Core Keeper support cross-platform crossplay?

Not universally. The listed PC storefronts—Steam, Epic, GOG and Microsoft Store—can play together. PS4 works with PS5, and Xbox One works with Xbox Series X|S, within their respective families. Cross-platform play between PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch families is not supported by the FAQ.

How do I host a Dedicated Server?

In Steam’s library, open the Tools list and install Core Keeper Dedicated Server. Launch it, wait for a Game ID, keep the process running and give that ID to players. They use Join Game in Core Keeper. Stop the server through its command window when finished.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can friends join a dedicated server without the original host in the game?

Yes, the dedicated-server arrangement is designed to keep the world available through the running server process rather than through the original player’s active game session. Someone still needs to keep the tool running and administer it.

Why does my dedicated-server guide look different?

Dedicated-server documentation and multiplayer connection behavior have changed in publisher updates. Read the README packaged with your installed server version and consult current publisher patch notes instead of assuming older menu names or startup instructions still apply.

Is there a maximum number of Core Keeper co-op players?

The official FAQ and publisher material used here do not establish a verified player-cap number. Do not rely on an uncited limit from an older post; check the documentation for the specific edition and build you are using.

Can a PC player join a Nintendo Switch, PlayStation or Xbox host?

No cross-platform combination between PC and those console families is supported by the current FAQ. Keep the group on compatible PC storefronts or within the same console family and supported generation pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To play Core Keeper with friends, one player selects Start Game, enters a world, copies its Game ID and stays there while others use Join Game. PC storefronts can play together, while console cross-generation play is limited to PS4–PS5 and Xbox One–Xbox Series X|S. If the original host cannot remain in the world, install and run the Steam Dedicated Server tool, follow its current README and share the server’s Game ID.
