Collateral is an announced 5v5, Search-and-Destroy-based mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Teams alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites. Every player begins a round with a pistol, earns cash through kills and objective play, and spends that cash between rounds on a limited selection of weapons, equipment, armor, perks, and team support. Each life matters: there are no respawns, and dying removes your purchased loadout for that round, although your cash carries forward.
Collateral was announced for the launch lineup, but the official material available through October 13, 2026, does not show it as playable yet. The full game is scheduled for October 23, 2026. No official playlist activation time, prices, purchase limits, or complete platform-by-platform availability had been published in the cited announcements.

What Collateral is
Collateral takes the round-based structure of Search and Destroy and adds a between-round cash economy. The official multiplayer announcement describes it as a 5v5 mode in which “every dollar counts and every decision matters.” A later PC article supplies the practical round rules: teams alternate attack and defense, the objective is built around two bomb sites, players start with pistols, purchases occur between rounds, and unspent cash remains available in later rounds.

| Announced rule | What it means in a match |
|---|---|
| Team size | Five players per side, for a 5v5 match. |
| Objective structure | Teams alternate attacking and defending two bomb sites. |
| Starting weapon | Every player begins with a pistol. |
| Economy | Kills and objective play award cash; purchases are made between rounds; cash carries from round to round. |
| Lives | Single-life rounds. Elimination removes you from the current round and costs your loadout. |
| Disabled systems | No respawns, Killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, or custom loadouts. |
| Availability | Announced for launch. The stated full-game release date is October 23, 2026; playlist timing is not stated. |
That combination makes Collateral different from a standard respawn playlist. Your opening pistol round, the cash you preserve, and the equipment you buy can affect several later rounds. Because prices and purchase limits have not been published, no reliable “best buy” order exists yet.

How does Collateral work?
1. Enter the mode when it is live
Collateral is part of the announced launch lineup, not a mode confirmed as active before the game’s October 23 release date. Once the game is available, look for Collateral in the multiplayer playlist selection. The official announcements do not state an exact unlock time, regional rollout, platform list, or whether the playlist will be permanent, featured, or time-limited, so those details must be checked in the live game and its launch notes.
2. Start the round with a pistol
All players begin with a pistol rather than a custom class. This gives the opening round a deliberately narrow equipment baseline. The published rules do not specify the exact pistol models, ammunition counts, map spawns, or round timer, so do not assume that information from another mode applies.
3. Play the attack or defense objective
The two teams alternate roles. The attacking side plays around the two bomb sites, while the defending side protects them. Collateral is described as based on Search and Destroy, but the announcements do not publish the complete win-condition wording, plant and defuse timings, site layouts, or overtime rules. Treat those as launch details to verify in the in-game rules or official notes.
4. Earn cash during the round
Kills and objective play generate the money used by Collateral’s economy. The official descriptions do not give award values, bonuses, loss penalties, or a maximum bank. Cash is therefore a resource to manage rather than a score you can safely spend without considering the next round.
5. Buy between rounds
Purchases happen in the interval between rounds. The available menu is limited to the categories listed by the PC article, rather than the unrestricted custom-loadout system disabled for Collateral. You can use the money earned so far to select a weapon, defensive benefit, equipment, or team UAV when those items are offered and affordable.
6. Survive or accept the single-life penalty
There are no respawns. If you are eliminated, you are out for the rest of that round and lose the loadout you had purchased. Your cash is not erased: it carries into future rounds. That creates a sharp trade-off between buying power now and preserving the ability to purchase later.

7. Continue until the round sequence ends
After the round resolves, the teams continue through the match with the economy intact and eventually swap attack and defense according to the mode’s round structure. The announcements do not state the number of rounds needed to win, side-switch timing, or tie-break procedure, so those rules should be confirmed from the launch version.

The official PC article names six purchase groupings and gives examples. It does not publish prices, purchase limits, item statistics, availability by round, or whether every item appears in every match. The table below reports the announced menu without turning examples into a complete catalog.
| Category | Published examples | What is not yet specified |
|---|---|---|
| Armor and perks | Armor Vest; Battle Hardened | Prices, protection values, perk duration, and purchase limits. |
| Equipment | Flash Grenade; Molotov Cocktail; Frag Grenade; Stim; Smoke Wall; Riot Shield | Carrying limits, slot rules, cooldowns, and exact behavior. |
| Pistols | A silenced pistol; revolver; Akimbo Pistols | Exact names, costs, ammunition, and whether sidearms can be combined with another weapon. |
| Standard-issue weapons | Shotgun; light machine gun; marksman rifle | The full list, prices, attachments, and round restrictions. |
| Tier 1 weapons | SMGs and several rifle types | The definition of Tier 1, the complete inventory, costs, and purchase limits. |
| Team UAV | UAV | Price, duration, activation rules, team-wide information, and whether multiple UAVs can be bought. |
How to think about the economy before prices are known
The following is general round-based shooter guidance, not a confirmed Collateral strategy or tested meta:
- Check the next-round plan before spending. Since money carries over, an affordable purchase now may be less valuable than preserving enough cash for a later rifle, armor, or team utility.
- Coordinate purchases. Five separate players buying unrelated items can leave a team without the equipment needed for its chosen attack or defense. Agree on roles and priorities in voice or text chat before the buy phase closes.
- Value survival. A purchase disappears when its owner dies, so an expensive item has more value when the player can use it safely and consistently.
- Use information purchases deliberately. A team UAV may be more useful when the team has a clear plan for acting on the information. The official material does not explain its exact display or duration, so confirm those details in-game.
- Do not assume conventional tier names explain power. “Tier 1” is an official category label, not a published ranking of every weapon’s effectiveness.
The rules that change how you play
No respawns
An elimination removes you from the current round. You cannot re-enter after a death, farm another life for cash, or trade aggressively on the assumption that a respawn is coming.
No Killstreaks
Collateral disables Killstreaks. Any plan based on earning a streak reward from a string of kills belongs to another playlist and should not be part of your Collateral preparation.

No custom loadouts
You do not enter with a saved class. Everyone starts with a pistol, then uses the between-round store. Attachments, perk combinations, and equipment packages from ordinary custom-loadout menus are not confirmed to carry into Collateral.
Your loadout is lost when you die, but your cash remains
This is the mode’s central risk distinction. Death removes the weapons and equipment you bought for that round, while your bank survives for future purchases. A surviving player therefore preserves both their life and the value of their current loadout; an eliminated player preserves only their money.
A practical first-match procedure
- Verify that the game and playlist are available. The announced release date is October 23, 2026. If Collateral is missing before or around launch, check the game’s update notes and playlist rotation rather than assuming your installation is broken.
- Read the in-game rules screen. Confirm the round count, timers, win conditions, site interaction, and buy-phase duration, because those values were not included in the announcements.
- Identify your team’s opening roles. On attack, decide who will take first contact, who will carry utility, and who will watch the second route. On defense, assign site coverage and a plan for gathering information without giving away a life.
- Use the pistol round to collect information. Learn sightlines, common approaches, and how the two bomb sites connect before committing future cash. Avoid treating a single early engagement as proof of a map-wide pattern.
- Review cash at the buy phase. Compare your bank with the team’s plan. Ask whether the purchase improves the next round’s objective plan and whether losing it would leave the team unable to buy later.
- Spend only after confirming the item. The official material does not provide prices or limits, so read the live store’s description and verify what each item does before committing cash.
- Play for survival after buying. Because elimination removes the loadout and there are no respawns, avoid unnecessary solo challenges. Preserve a numerical advantage and make the opposing team spend lives to retake space.
- Reassess after every round. Record which purchases produced value, how much money survived, and whether the opposing team is favoring one site or route. Adjust the next buy instead of repeating it automatically.
General tactical guidance that does not depend on unpublished numbers
On attack
Use the five-player structure to create a clear objective plan rather than sending everyone to separate fights. Pressure one site, keep a route for a late change, and make the defending team account for more than one possible approach. Since the exact plant rules and timers are not published, focus on controlling space around the sites and keeping enough players alive to complete the objective.

On defense
Protect both sites without scattering so widely that a single attacker can isolate each defender. Share information when you see movement, rotate with a reason, and preserve a fallback position. A defender who survives with a useful purchase can influence the next round’s economy; a risky early peek can remove both the player and that round’s loadout.
With limited health recovery
Because automatic regeneration is disabled, damage has a lasting tactical cost unless another announced item or rule restores health. Take fights that have a clear purpose, use cover between engagements, and communicate when a player is weakened. The precise healing behavior of Stim is not stated, so do not build a strategy around an assumed cooldown or recovery value.
With persistent cash
Track the team’s economy aloud. A player who survives with cash and equipment can enter the next round stronger than a player who spent heavily and died, while a successful objective play can change what the whole team can buy. Until official prices are published, use relative questions—“Can we all afford a coordinated purchase?” and “What happens if the first contact dies?”—rather than memorized thresholds.

With no streak rewards
There is no reason to alter a plan to chase a Killstreak. Kills matter for survival, objective control, and cash, but the mode’s announced reward system is the store, not a streak ladder.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I cannot find Collateral before release.”
The mode is announced for launch, while the stated full-game release date is October 23, 2026. Before that date, an absent playlist is consistent with the published schedule. After launch, check for a required update and the current playlist rotation; no official activation time has been announced.
“I expected my custom class.”
Custom loadouts are disabled. Start with the pistol supplied by the mode and use the between-round purchase menu instead.
“I died and was waiting to respawn.”
Respawns are disabled. Death ends your participation in that round and removes your current loadout. Watch the round, communicate information if the game allows it, and use your retained cash in a later buy.
“My health did not refill automatically.”
Automatic health regeneration is disabled by the announced rules. Treat damage as a persistent risk and verify the live behavior of Stim or any other healing item rather than assuming standard multiplayer regeneration.
“The store does not match an online purchase guide.”
No official price sheet or purchase-limit table has been published. Item costs, availability, and menu organization may be different from speculation or from another mode. Use the live store and official patch notes as the authority.
Best Value
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
“Our team bought six different things and had no plan.”
The store is limited, but the team still needs coordination. Decide whether the round requires information, entry utility, protection, or a stronger primary weapon, then distribute purchases around that plan. This is general tactical advice, not a confirmed item priority.
What is still unconfirmed
The two official announcements establish the mode’s basic identity and economy, but they do not answer every practical launch question. The following details were not stated:
- Exact playlist activation time and rotation schedule.
- Complete platform-by-platform availability.
- Number of rounds required to win, round timers, and side-switch or overtime rules.
- Bomb-plant and defuse timings, interaction rules, and site-specific mechanics.
- Cash awards for kills, assists, objectives, or round wins.
- Prices, purchase limits, refunds, or restrictions by round.
- The complete weapon and equipment catalog, item statistics, and attachment rules.
- How Armor Vest, Battle Hardened, Stim, Smoke Wall, Riot Shield, and UAV function numerically.
Those omissions matter because they determine the eventual economy and strategy. Until the live rules or a later official update fills them in, treat detailed build orders, price charts, and tier lists as unverified.

What you need to play
You need the full game on a supported platform and an online multiplayer connection. The official PC article gives October 23, 2026 as the full-game release date. It does not establish a separate Collateral purchase, a standalone mode fee, a required accessory, or a particular edition. Verify the platform, edition, and regional availability in the retailer or platform listing you intend to use.
Collateral’s announced design is straightforward to summarize: five-player teams alternate attack and defense around two bomb sites, start with pistols, earn and carry cash, buy between rounds, and risk losing every purchased item when eliminated. The mode will be ready to learn in detail only when the launch version exposes its timers, prices, limits, and playlist schedule.
