The least complicated route is the current GOG edition: install it on Windows 10 or 11, start the unmodified game once, and play with keyboard and mouse. For widescreen or 4K displays, subtitles, controller support, faster loading and modern rendering, add the community-made Undying Renewal package and use its launcher.
The safest order is important: establish a working, untouched installation first, then add enhancements one at a time. That gives you a known-good fallback if a renderer or optional gameplay change causes trouble.

What you need before installing
Clive Barker’s Undying is the 2001 first-person horror game identified on the current ModDB game page as an Electronic Arts/EA Los Angeles release. A modern installation does not require original discs or a legacy Windows setup when you use the currently supported digital release.

The GOG product page snapshot accessed on October 16, 2026 shows a 4.5/5 rating from 423 reviews and describes the release as “This game is 2026-ready.” Those are page claims and a point-in-time rating, not a guarantee that every hardware and driver combination will behave identically.

Choose the setup that matches your goal

Install and verify the clean game first
- Obtain the current GOG edition. The listing targets Windows 10 and newer, identifies Windows 11 as verified, and states that the game is DRM-free. You can install it without Galaxy and play offline after the files are on your PC.
- Use the normal installer. Choose a game folder you can find easily. Avoid placing the installation somewhere you cannot write to if Windows later prevents a launcher or patcher from changing files.
- Launch the unmodified game once. Do this before extracting Renewal. Confirm that the game reaches its menus and starts a new game. This first run creates a clean reference point and separates an original-installation problem from a mod-configuration problem.
- Exit normally. Keep the untouched folder available while you decide whether you want modern display, input or rendering features. Do not overwrite your only copy with experimental files before you know the base game starts.
If the clean installation will not start, solve that problem before adding Renewal. Installing a mod on top of a broken base setup makes it harder to identify whether the failure comes from the game, Windows, a driver or the mod.
Install Undying Renewal for modern features
Undying Renewal is the practical modernization layer for players who want the old game on current displays and input devices. Its documented feature set includes widescreen resolutions up to 4K, subtitles, controller support, a Vulkan renderer, shorter loading times, restored cut content, multiplayer and optional quality-of-life changes.
The project requires the English version of the game. Separate localization patches exist, but they are not part of the basic English installation sequence.

- Finish the clean-game test. Renewal is an addition to a working installation, not a substitute for one.
- Download the current Renewal archive from its project page. Community projects can change their files and compatibility details, so use the current release information rather than an old mirror or a previously saved archive.
- Open the Clive Barker’s Undying installation folder. This is the folder containing the game’s executable and original data files.
- Extract the Renewal archive into that folder. Preserve the archive’s directory structure. If extraction creates an extra nested folder and the launcher cannot see the game, check that the launcher and its support files are in the actual Undying folder rather than one level below it.
- Start
UndyingLauncherat least once. The project notes that the launcher must run once so it can patch the game. - Click Play in the launcher. Use this launcher for the patched setup instead of bypassing it with the original executable.
- Change one option at a time. First confirm that the patched game starts, then select a display mode, renderer, subtitles or controller profile. A one-change-at-a-time approach gives you a clear rollback path.
Keep the original installation files or a backup of the clean folder. If a new renderer, optional content package or input setting causes a crash, you can return to the known-good state rather than guessing which file changed.
Set up widescreen and 4K
The original game was designed for older display formats. Renewal adds widescreen resolutions and supports output up to 4K, so it is the appropriate route when the unmodified game does not offer the aspect ratio or resolution your monitor uses.
Use the launcher’s display choices first
- Open
UndyingLauncherfrom the game folder. - Select a widescreen resolution that your monitor actually supports. If you use a 4K desktop, begin with the native 4K choice only after confirming that the patched game starts at a lower mode.
- Start the game with Play and check menus, gameplay and cut scenes. A resolution that appears in a menu is not proof that every scene renders correctly on your particular driver.
- If the image is unstable, return to the launcher and test the previous working resolution rather than changing several graphics settings together.
Resolution support and aspect-ratio handling are separate from performance. The published material does not provide a benchmark, frame-rate target or tested GPU list for Windows 11, so do not treat 4K availability as a promise of a particular frame rate.

Pick a renderer conservatively
Renewal’s documented options include Vulkan and modern DirectX-related paths. PCGamingWiki also documents dgVoodoo2 and Vulkan/DirectX renderer choices for troubleshooting older rendering behavior. Start with the default path that works on your PC; switch only when you have a visible problem such as a black screen, missing effects or an immediate crash.

If the game starts and displays correctly, there is no requirement to replace it.
- Try Vulkan when the project documents it for your build. It is a modern rendering path, but driver support and results vary by system.
- Use dgVoodoo2 as a troubleshooting experiment. It is not a mandatory component of every installation. Add it only when the original or Renewal renderer has a specific compatibility problem.
- Change one renderer at a time. Record which choice was active before testing another so you can restore the previous state.
Use a controller or keyboard and mouse
Renewal adds controller support. A standard USB PC controller is therefore an optional accessory rather than a requirement. Keyboard and mouse remain valid if you prefer the original PC control style or do not want to install the modernization layer.
- Connect the controller before starting the Renewal launcher so Windows has already enumerated it.
- Launch the game through
UndyingLauncher. - Enable or configure controller input using the options exposed by your Renewal build.
- Test movement, looking, firing, menu navigation and any action you rely on before beginning a long session.
If the game still responds only to the keyboard and mouse, confirm that you are running the Renewal launcher rather than the untouched executable, then check that Windows sees the controller in its normal game-controller settings. Do not assume that every controller model has identical button names or mappings.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The clean GOG game does not launch
- Run the game once more from the GOG installation before adding any files.
- Confirm that you installed the current Windows release rather than copying an incomplete folder from another computer.
- Remove any compatibility experiments or third-party renderer files you added before the failure.
- If the problem remains, use the clean installation as your baseline and consult the current GOG support information for that release.
The minimum specifications are 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM and DirectX 9.0c-compatible graphics and sound hardware, but meeting a minimum does not guarantee that a particular modern driver will handle the original renderer without adjustment.
Renewal’s launcher cannot find or patch the game
- Check that the archive was extracted into the actual Undying folder, not into an additional nested directory.
- Confirm that the base game is the English version required by the project.
- Run
UndyingLauncheronce before pressing Play; the project specifically requires this initial launch to apply its patching step. - Recheck the project’s current release notes if the files or launcher labels have changed since your download.
The game shows a black screen, broken effects or a crash after changing graphics
- Return to the last renderer and resolution that worked.
- Launch through Renewal again and test only one alternative renderer.
- If you added dgVoodoo2, remove that experiment or restore the clean backup before trying another path.
- Do not interpret a successful launch with one renderer as evidence that every Vulkan, DirectX or dgVoodoo2 combination is compatible with your hardware.
The 32-bit executable becomes unstable or runs out of address space
PCGamingWiki notes that the 32-bit executable may need the Large Address Aware flag on modern machines. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting option, not a prerequisite for every player. Apply it only after the normal clean installation and Renewal setup have been tested, and keep a backup so you can undo the change if behavior worsens.

Subtitles, restored content or quality-of-life changes are missing
Verify that you started the patched game through UndyingLauncher, not the original executable. Renewal exposes optional features through its launcher, so a feature may simply be disabled. Enable one option, start the game and verify it before enabling another.

A controller is detected but does not behave correctly
- Reconnect the USB controller before launching Renewal.
- Check the controller configuration exposed by your Renewal build.
- Test with keyboard and mouse to determine whether the issue is input-specific or a broader game-launch problem.
- If a particular controller model uses unusual button labels or modes, map actions by function rather than by assuming a standard layout.
You installed a localization patch and the game stopped working
Renewal’s documented base requirement is the English version, while localization patches are separate. Return to the English setup that worked, confirm the Renewal launcher starts, and then consult the localization project’s current compatibility notes before adding language files again.
Preserve the original experience while using modern fixes
Renewal combines technical improvements with optional content and gameplay changes. Restored cut content, multiplayer and quality-of-life features can be valuable, but they are not identical to an untouched 2001 installation.
- For historical fidelity: keep the clean GOG installation and use it when you want the original presentation and behavior.
- For accessibility and readability: enable subtitles and modern display support without turning on optional gameplay changes you do not want.
- For convenience: use controller support, reduced loading times and the renderer that behaves best on your system.
- For experimentation: enable restored content or other optional changes individually, recording what you changed so you can reproduce or reverse the setup.
A clean baseline is especially useful because community-maintained projects can evolve. ModDB and PCGamingWiki are community references, so version numbers and compatibility details can change; check their current pages when you update rather than assuming that an older configuration remains valid.

What performance can—and cannot—be promised
The published requirements are very low by modern standards, and the GOG listing supports Windows 10 and verified Windows 11 installation. However, there is no authoritative benchmark for a particular modern GPU, frame rate or Windows 11 hardware combination in the available documentation. It would be misleading to promise a fixed frame rate, universal 4K performance or a single renderer that fixes every PC.
Use the following practical rule: establish the base game, add Renewal, then select the highest resolution and renderer that remain stable on your own system. If stability matters more than visual changes, keep the last known-good configuration instead of chasing an unsupported maximum.
