How to Play Classic Zelda-Like Games on a Modern PC or Steam Deck

The easiest legal route is an authorized native PC release. Install it from Steam or another legitimate storefront on Windows. On Steam Deck, install the Steam version in Game Mode, then check its Steam Deck Compatibility label: Verified is the least troublesome, while Playable may need a controller, launcher, or Proton adjustment. You do not normally need an emulator for modern PC releases.

What counts as a classic Zelda-like game?

“Zelda-like” is an informal design description, not a technical platform category. It usually means an action-adventure game built around exploration, an interconnected world, dungeons or dungeon-like areas, environmental puzzles, melee combat, items or abilities that open new routes, and a mixture of top-down, isometric, or compact 3D spaces. Some games emphasize puzzle-solving and dungeon sequence; others are more combat-focused while keeping the same exploration loop.

That distinction matters when choosing a version. A game with a native Windows build is a straightforward PC installation. A game that was originally released only for an older console may require an emulator, and the legal status of using that emulator depends on your jurisdiction and on how you obtained the game files. The practical guide below prioritizes games sold for current computers and the Steam Deck.

Choose the right way to play

Route Best for What you need Typical friction
Native PC release Windows players who want the simplest setup A legitimate purchase, a supported Windows PC, and the listed controller or keyboard settings Usually limited to display, controller, or save-location choices
Steam Deck in Game Mode Players who want a console-like experience A Steam purchase, enough storage, and a Deck compatibility check Playable titles can need a different Proton tool, a community layout, or launcher interaction
Non-Steam software in Desktop Mode Owners of an authorized installer or launcher that is not distributed through Steam Desktop Mode, an installer that supports the Deck’s Arch Linux environment, and permission under the publisher’s terms Manual shortcuts, updates, sign-in windows, and controller mapping
Emulation People who legally own an older release and have a lawful way to use their game files An emulator appropriate to the original system, legally obtained game data, and jurisdiction-specific legal review Configuration, graphics timing, input mapping, and legal uncertainty; not required for a native PC release

For most readers, start in the first two rows. Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS through Proton and reported “over 18,000 titles last we checked” on its SteamOS page in 2025. That is a time-sensitive figure, not a promise that every current or future game works.

How Steam Deck compatibility labels work

Steam displays one of four labels for a game on its store page. The review is ongoing, so a label can change after a SteamOS, Proton, or game update.

Label What it means for a Deck buyer How much setup to expect
Verified Valve’s checks indicate that the game works well on Deck with the expected controls and interface. Out-of-the-box target. You should still install updates and confirm the text size is comfortable for you.
Playable The game runs, but one or more details may require manual work, such as an on-screen keyboard, a launcher interaction, a controller layout, or a setting change. Allow time for a small amount of troubleshooting.
Unsupported Valve currently considers the title nonfunctional on Deck. Do not buy it expecting a reliable experience; later updates can change the status.
Unknown Valve has not completed or published a compatibility result. Research the current community and developer information before purchasing, and accept that the result is uncertain.

Valve’s Verified criteria include full controller support, readable text at Deck resolutions, a navigable launcher when a launcher is present, and compatibility with Proton and the underlying system. A game can therefore launch successfully yet remain Playable if its menus, text, or launcher are awkward from the couch.

Install a native game on a Windows PC

A native release is the least complicated path because you use the build supplied for your operating system rather than recreating an older console environment.

  1. Buy or redeem the game through an authorized storefront. Confirm that the store page lists Windows support, controller support if you want to play with a pad, and the minimum display and hardware requirements.
  2. Install the storefront client and sign in. Use the same account that owns the game. Avoid installers obtained from file-sharing or ROM sites.
  3. Install the game to a drive with free space. Leave additional room for patches and save data. If the game offers a choice between standard and high-resolution assets, select the package your storage and graphics hardware can handle.
  4. Connect your controller before first launch. A modern XInput-compatible controller is generally detected automatically. If the game supports keyboard and mouse as well, test both before changing advanced software settings.
  5. Launch once with the default settings. Let shaders or first-run files finish. Set the display mode, resolution, frame-rate cap, text scale, and audio output from the game’s own options before installing third-party wrappers.
  6. Update only through the publisher or storefront. Patches can fix controller bugs, improve widescreen behavior, or alter save compatibility. Keep a backup of important saves before a major mod or version change.

Recommended Windows controls

For top-down or isometric action, a controller is usually the safest default: the analog stick handles eight-way movement, while face buttons and triggers can cover attacks, dodge, interact, and item use. Keyboard controls may be preferable for games with inventory-heavy menus or precise cursor input. Keep the original layout until you know which action is uncomfortable; remapping too early can make tutorials and prompts confusing.

Install and play from Steam Deck Game Mode

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and read the Steam Deck Compatibility section. Prefer Verified when you want minimal setup. Treat Playable as a purchase that may need a short configuration pass.
  2. Install from your Library in Game Mode. Select the game, choose Install, and pick the internal SSD or a compatible microSD card with enough free space. Wait for the download and any shader-cache work to complete.
  3. Launch with the default Steam Play choice first. SteamOS uses Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games on Linux. Do not force a custom tool before testing the configuration Valve selected.
  4. Check controls and text in the opening menus. Verify that every required button is reachable, prompts match your controller, and text is legible on the Deck display. A game can technically run while still needing a layout adjustment.
  5. For a Playable title, open the game’s Properties. In the Library, highlight the game, press the controller’s menu button, choose Properties, then open Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool only when the game’s documentation or a current support report identifies one.
  6. Retest after each change. Change one variable at a time—Proton tool, launch option, or controller layout—so you can undo the change that caused a regression.

Valve’s Steam Support guidance treats Proton selection as a troubleshooting step, not a universal performance upgrade. A newer tool is not automatically better for every game, and a game update can make a previously reliable choice unnecessary.

Use Desktop Mode for an authorized non-Steam launcher

SteamOS is Linux-based and provides a Desktop Mode for software installation and file management. The Deck’s base environment is Arch Linux, so a Windows installer is not automatically compatible simply because it runs on a Windows PC.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode from the power menu. Connect a keyboard and mouse if the launcher has small controls or requires text entry.
  2. Confirm that the publisher permits the installation and that the launcher supports the Deck’s environment. Read the publisher’s current support notes rather than assuming that a generic Windows installer will work.
  3. Install the launcher or application using its documented method. Keep the installer and game files on a location with sufficient space, and note whether the launcher stores saves locally or in the cloud.
  4. Add the installed application to Steam only if needed. A non-Steam shortcut lets you return to Game Mode, but it may require custom artwork, launch arguments, and a controller layout.
  5. Test sign-in, downloads, overlays, and suspend/resume. These are common points of friction even when the game itself renders correctly.

Desktop Mode is an option, not a requirement for a Steam-native release. If a game is already available through Steam and has a Verified label, using the store version usually avoids manual launcher work.

Two current examples that fit the Zelda-like brief

Game Release and perspective Core activities Deck status and controls Best fit
TUNIC Released March 16, 2022; an isometric adventure starring a small fox Exploration, environmental puzzles, combat, secrets, and manual-like discovery Steam listing reports full controller support and Steam Deck Verified Players who want a compact isometric world, cryptic clues, and a strong classic-adventure atmosphere
Death’s Door Released July 20, 2021; a 3D action-adventure with a fixed, readable perspective Melee weapons, arrows, magic, exploration, and dungeons Steam listing reports full controller support and Steam Deck Verified Players who want faster combat and dungeon progression with modern presentation

The Steam page for Death’s Door displays this critic description from IGN: “Death’s Door is a must for those looking to scratch the itch of a classic Zelda dungeon-delving game.” That is an editorial opinion, not a technical guarantee, but it accurately signals the game’s dungeon-and-combat emphasis. TUNIC leans more heavily into deciphering clues, exploring every corner, and interpreting its in-game manual.

Native PC release versus emulation

Question Native release Emulation
Do you need an emulator? No. Install the PC build supplied by the authorized storefront. Yes, an emulator for the original console or computer may be needed.
Where do updates come from? The storefront or publisher’s launcher. Usually the original release’s own update history; emulator updates are separate.
Controller setup Often mapped by the game or Steam Input. Requires mapping the original system’s buttons and sometimes motion or analog controls.
Graphics and display Use the game’s resolution, scaling, and frame-rate options. Configure internal resolution, aspect ratio, timing, shaders, and possible widescreen behavior.
Legal acquisition Purchase or redeem the current PC release through an authorized seller. Use only game files obtained lawfully and check the law where you live.

Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” It describes ROMs as unauthorized copies and warns that some unauthorized emulators circumvent security measures. Do not use ROM sites or instructions for downloading infringing copies as a shortcut. Emulator software is a separate technical category; whether a particular use is lawful depends on the jurisdiction and the provenance of the game files, so a blanket statement that all emulation is legal or illegal would be inaccurate.

Controls, display, storage, and battery decisions

Controller and Steam Input

Start with the game’s native layout. If a Playable title has one awkward action, open the controller settings from its Steam page and try a current community layout rather than rebuilding every button yourself. Check that menus, map screens, and radial item wheels are reachable, not just movement and attack.

Display and text

Top-down games can look sharp at the Deck’s native resolution, while older 3D games may expose texture shimmer or small text. Increase the in-game UI scale before relying on system magnification. If a launcher opens in a tiny window, try its own display settings first; a launcher that cannot be navigated with a controller is one reason Valve may mark a game Playable rather than Verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage

Check the install size on the store page and leave room for updates, shader caches, and save backups. A microSD card is convenient for a large library, but internal storage generally minimizes file-management and performance variables. Do not move a game while it is running or while a patch is pending.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Battery and performance

Set a frame-rate limit only after confirming the game is stable. Lowering the refresh rate or frame-rate cap can extend battery life in a lightweight 2D or isometric game, but a cap that is too low can make combat feel delayed. For troubleshooting, return to the game’s default graphics profile, then change one setting at a time.

Troubleshoot the most common Deck problems

The game will not launch

  • Install pending SteamOS and game updates, then reboot the Deck.
  • Return the Compatibility setting to the default Steam Play choice unless the developer or current support notes specify a different Proton tool.
  • Verify the installation from the game’s Properties menu.
  • If the title is Unsupported, treat the label as a warning that Valve currently considers it nonfunctional; do not assume a random launch option will make it reliable.

The launcher opens but cannot be controlled

  • Try touchscreen input or a mouse in Desktop Mode if the launcher requires pointer interaction.
  • Use the game’s controller settings or Steam Input to map an equivalent select and back action.
  • After signing in, test whether the game can launch directly from Game Mode on the next run.

Buttons are wrong or a menu is inaccessible

  • Check whether the game is using a keyboard layout instead of a gamepad layout.
  • Load a recent community controller layout, then test every menu before starting a long session.
  • Disconnect extra Bluetooth devices temporarily if the game is assigning input to the wrong controller.

Text is too small or clipped

  • Increase UI or subtitle size in the game.
  • Switch between windowed and fullscreen modes if a launcher or older title is scaling incorrectly.
  • Check the Deck compatibility notes; readable text at Deck resolutions is part of Valve’s Verified target.

A Proton change made things worse

Open Properties > Compatibility and disable the forced tool to return to Steam’s default. If you must test another tool, record the original setting and change only one version at a time. Recheck after game and SteamOS updates because compatibility is not static.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  • Confirm that the title is an authorized PC release or that you have a lawful, jurisdiction-compliant reason to use an emulator.
  • On Steam, read the current Deck label and the full compatibility notes, not just the store trailer.
  • Choose a controller with the button layout the game expects; test it before a long play session.
  • Check install size, available internal or microSD storage, and room for updates.
  • Launch once with defaults before forcing Proton, adding launch options, or installing a custom layout.
  • For Playable games, reserve a few minutes for launcher, text, and input adjustments.
  • Keep SteamOS, the game, and any launcher current, but make a save backup before major changes.
  • Recheck compatibility after updates; Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown are current review states, not permanent guarantees.

Bottom line: the simplest setup

On Windows, buy an authorized native release, install it through its storefront, and use the game’s default controller and display settings first. On Steam Deck, choose the Steam version with a Verified label whenever possible, install it in Game Mode, and let Steam select Proton. Playable games are often workable, but expect a manual controller, launcher, or compatibility-layer adjustment. Desktop Mode is useful for an authorized non-Steam launcher that supports the Deck’s Arch Linux base; it is unnecessary for a Verified Steam release. Emulation is only relevant when the original game requires it, and the legal answer depends on your jurisdiction and lawful ownership or acquisition of the game files.
