How to Play Classic Square Enix RPGs on Modern Consoles and PC

The easiest way to play classic Square Enix role-playing games today is to choose the edition by game, not by console. Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster covers the first six Final Fantasy games on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is on Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles adds enhanced and classic modes on Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Steam and Steam Deck. Octopath Traveler offers a newer HD-2D take on classic systems across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Windows.

Those releases are not interchangeable. A pixel remaster preserves the original structure with conveniences; an HD-2D remake rebuilds presentation and sometimes systems; a modern remake such as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade changes the format more radically. Use the guide below to match the game, version and platform to the experience you want.

Choose the kind of classic experience you want

“Classic” can mean several different things. Before opening a store page, decide whether you want historical authenticity, a polished recreation, or a modern reinterpretation.

Pixel remaster: original design with practical upgrades

A pixel remaster keeps the 2D maps, turn-based rules and overall progression of the source game while replacing parts of the presentation and interface. Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster uses updated pixel art, rearranged music, a modern user interface, optional font choices and auto-battle. These additions reduce friction without turning the games into action RPGs.

#1 Best Overall
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake (NSW)
  • DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake is a stunning reimagining of the beloved masterpiece and narrative beginning to The Erdrick Trilogy – the first three games of the mainline DRAGON QUEST series. Featuring vibrant HD-2D graphics, new and modernized features, and a refined narrative, players are invited to set out on an epic fantasy adventure to save the world from a dark evil.
  • A fully modernized remake of the original: Stunning HD-2D visuals fuse pixel art with 3D graphics, bringing players into the world of DRAGON QUEST III like never before, along with an improved and modernized UI, and other quality of life improvements.
  • Traditional DRAGON QUEST style battles: A refined take on the classic turn-based battle system, featuring new animations, additional improvements such as an adjustable battle speed, an auto-battle setting, and more.
  • Immersive world: Deep exploration of a vast world map with an abundance of rich and captivating locations to discover, challenging players to overcome many unexpected encounters during the journey.
  • Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the DRAGON QUEST universe.

HD-2D remake: rebuilt environments around classic rules

HD-2D combines sprite-like characters with layered 3D backgrounds, lighting and depth effects. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a reimagining rather than a simple upscaling of the original. It is suited to players who want traditional command combat and party building presented with current visual standards.

Enhanced and classic versions: two ways to play one tactical game

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles includes a classic version and an enhanced version. The classic mode is the choice for the original feel. The enhanced mode adds a revised interface, updated dialogue, voice acting and convenience features such as fast-forward and autosave.

Full modern remake: familiar setting, different structure

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is part of a three-game remake project. It uses real-time combat and a substantially different structure from the 1997 Final Fantasy VII, so it should be treated as a modern reinterpretation rather than a replacement for the original game.

Platform map: where each major release works

Platform support is title-specific. The table lists the platforms identified for each release; storefront editions and physical availability can differ by country.

Game or collection PlayStation Xbox Nintendo PC Notable options
Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster PS4 Xbox Series X|S Switch Steam Updated pixel art, rearranged music, modern UI, auto-battle and font choices

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles PS4 and PS5 Xbox Series X|S Switch and Switch 2 Steam; Steam Deck support is listed Enhanced and classic versions, fast-forward and autosave

“Not stated” means the available platform information does not establish a platform for that row; it does not prove that no edition exists. Check the exact regional store listing before purchasing, especially when a console has both current-generation and backward-compatible versions.

Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster: the broadest classic collection

What you get

The Pixel Remaster line presents the first six numbered Final Fantasy games as one consistent 2D collection. The games retain their original role-playing foundations while adding quality-of-life options. Updated pixel art improves readability on modern displays, and rearranged soundtracks provide a fresh interpretation of the music. A modern interface, auto-battle and font choices make long sessions easier than the original releases.

The collection is available digitally on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Square Enix also lists Xbox Series X|S and Steam for the broader release, making it the most practical single purchase for someone who wants a chronological tour of early Final Fantasy on current hardware.

Which game should you start with?

  • Final Fantasy I: Start here if you want to see the series’ basic formula develop from its earliest form.
  • Final Fantasy IV: A strong story-forward entry with a focused cast and a more structured narrative.
  • Final Fantasy VI: A larger ensemble and more ambitious world make it a good choice when you want the collection’s most expansive 2D storytelling.

You do not need to play the games in release order. They are separate numbered adventures, so choose by preferred style and then return to earlier entries if you want the historical progression.

How to use the convenience features

  1. Select your font and display preferences first. The optional font choices are useful on a television viewed from a distance or on a handheld screen where the default style is harder to read.
  2. Use auto-battle for routine encounters. It is intended for repeated, low-risk fights; switch back to manual commands when an enemy has unusual resistances or when you need to conserve resources.
  3. Keep the original pacing for bosses and story battles. Convenience options reduce repetition, but they do not replace learning each game’s spell, equipment and status-effect rules.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: a traditional command RPG rebuilt for current hardware

Why choose it

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake reimagines a formative classic rather than merely reproducing its original graphics. Its core appeal is traditional turn-based command combat, party building and a self-contained adventure, presented with layered HD-2D environments.

The official platform list includes Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows. If you own one of those systems, it is a straightforward entry point into classic-style Dragon Quest without requiring an older console.

Who it suits

  • Players who prefer selecting commands for a party instead of controlling characters in real time.
  • Readers who want one complete classic adventure rather than a six-game collection.
  • Fans of HD-2D presentation who still want traditional exploration, equipment and battle systems.

Where the wider trilogy fits

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake continues the trilogy on the same broad family of platforms: Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows. If you want to follow the connected trilogy, verify the regional store listing for each game and buy the entries in the intended order.

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles: the choice for grid-based strategy

Supported systems and versions

The Ivalice Chronicles is listed for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Steam Deck. It includes both an enhanced version and a classic version, so the purchase is designed for readers who value either convenience or historical presentation.

Classic mode versus enhanced mode

Mode Best for Features identified for the release
Classic Players who want the original feel Original-style presentation and rules experience
Enhanced Players starting on a modern system or replaying for comfort Updated interface, revised dialogue, voice acting, fast-forward and autosave

The game’s defining systems are grid-based battles, job customization and a story centered on political conflict. Those systems make it a different recommendation from a numbered Final Fantasy: choose it when planning movement, elevation, turn order and character roles sounds more appealing than selecting commands in a conventional battle menu.

A practical first-play setup

  1. Choose enhanced mode if you are unfamiliar with tactical RPGs or want the clearest interface and autosave support.
  2. Use fast-forward during routine movement or repeated actions, then return to normal speed when positioning matters.
  3. Keep several save points around difficult battles. Autosave is a convenience, not a substitute for maintaining a manual save before a major decision.
  4. Switch to classic mode on a later playthrough if you want to compare the original presentation with the updated version.

Octopath Traveler: a modern game for players who want classic ideas

Octopath Traveler is not a remaster of a 1980s or 1990s release. It is a newer RPG built around classic party-based combat and HD-2D presentation. That makes it a useful starting point for readers who want sprite-like characters, turn-based battles and menu-driven progression without committing to the limitations of an older game.

Square Enix lists it on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC through Steam. Its broad coverage is helpful when a household owns different consoles, but confirm whether the store page is for the original Octopath Traveler or a different entry in the series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Octopath Traveler when

  • You want HD-2D visuals but a game designed for modern displays and controllers.
  • You prefer a party-based system and turn-based encounters over real-time action.
  • You need a recommendation that spans PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Windows.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade: a different route through a familiar classic

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade belongs to a three-game remake project and is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. It is not the same product as the 1997 original. The remake uses real-time combat and restructures the story and progression, so buying it means choosing a modern reinterpretation of Final Fantasy VII rather than an archival version of the original game.

Choose this route if you want contemporary action combat, cinematic presentation and a reworked narrative. Choose a classic-style release instead if your priority is the original turn-based pacing and 1990s presentation.

Chrono Trigger and catalog gaps: verify before buying

The cited official Windows Steam version of Chrono Trigger includes keyboard and mouse support, autosave, higher-resolution graphics, and later improvements to the interface and widescreen display. The available platform information does not establish a current native Chrono Trigger release on every modern console.

Rank #4
Dragon Quest III 3 HD-2D Remake
  • Turn-based combat system and characters with multiple vocations
  • Stunning HD 2D graphics that bring the world to life like never before
  • Explore a big world full of exciting places and unexpected encounters
  • Experience a timeless soundtrack and immerse yourself in the magic of the Dragon Quest universe

That makes Chrono Trigger the clearest example of why a series-wide assumption can lead to a bad purchase. Search the exact title in your console’s own storefront, check the supported platform shown by the publisher, and do not assume that a Windows edition has a matching Switch, PlayStation or Xbox release.

How to buy the correct edition on your platform

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

  1. Open the Nintendo eShop on the console or its web storefront for your region.
  2. Search the complete title, including terms such as “Pixel Remaster,” “HD-2D Remake” or “The Ivalice Chronicles.”
  3. Check the platform label. A Switch listing and a Switch 2 listing may not be identical, and an enhanced version can be separate from a classic version.
  4. Read the edition description for included modes, language options and whether the product is digital-only in your region.
  5. Confirm storage space and install requirements shown on the purchase page before completing the transaction.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5

  1. Search the PlayStation Store using the full game name rather than only the franchise name.
  2. Check whether the result is marked PS4, PS5 or both. Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is listed for both generations, while Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is listed for PS5.
  3. Open the product details and verify that the mode or edition you want is included.
  4. Review the region-specific page for physical availability, language support and any edition differences.

Xbox consoles and Windows PC

  1. On Xbox, search the Microsoft Store for the exact title and verify whether the listing says Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or both.
  2. For PC, distinguish a Steam listing from a Microsoft Store on Windows listing. They are separate storefront products even when the same game is available on both.
  3. Check the stated controller, operating-system and storage requirements on the current store page.
  4. For Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, verify that the PC listing is the Xbox-on-PC edition described by the publisher rather than assuming every PC storefront carries the same release.

Steam and Steam Deck

  1. Search Steam for the full title and open the publisher’s product page.
  2. Read the system requirements and controller information, then check the Steam Deck compatibility label when playing on handheld PC hardware.
  3. For Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, the listed support includes Steam Deck; still review the current compatibility notes because storefront metadata can change.
  4. On a desktop PC, compare the game’s required operating system and storage with your machine before downloading.

Digital, physical and regional availability

The Pixel Remaster collection is listed as digitally available on PS4 and Switch, while other titles may have different physical or boxed arrangements by region. Treat a retailer listing as a separate question from platform support.

  • Digital listing: confirms that the title can be purchased from that storefront when the listing is active in your region.
  • Physical edition: depends on territory, print run and whether the package contains a cartridge, disc or download code.
  • Generation label: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch and Switch 2 labels may describe different builds or entitlements.
  • PC storefront: Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows are separate purchase channels; verify the one you intend to use.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a franchise has one universal platform list

Square Enix releases different games on different combinations of PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, Windows and mobile platforms. Always verify the exact title and edition.

Confusing a remaster with a remake

Pixel Remaster aims to modernize presentation and convenience while retaining the original structure. HD-2D Remakes rebuild the visual presentation and may revise systems. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade changes the combat format and narrative structure most substantially.

Buying the first search result

Store searches can show bundles, soundtrack products, demos or another game in the same series. Read the product description and platform badge before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting physical stock everywhere

Physical availability varies by title and region. If a boxed copy matters to you, confirm the exact regional edition rather than inferring it from a digital listing.

Choosing a game solely by graphics

Presentation is only one difference. Decide whether you want conventional turn-based commands, grid tactics, auto-battle conveniences or real-time action before comparing screenshots.
