There are two dependable legal ways to play an older Shrek game today: buy an authorized digital release that is currently offered for your region, or buy an authentic used copy and use hardware that supports its original format. A PlayStation 2, original Xbox, or GameCube disc does not automatically work in a PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series console. Check the live compatibility or store listing before spending money.
The short answer
Start by identifying the exact game and edition. Shrek 2 has separate console and PC releases; Shrek SuperSlam was released for several consoles and Windows; and Shrek Forever After had both a Steam release and a physical PC DVD edition. Those versions are not interchangeable.

On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, only titles included in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog can run from an original Xbox or Xbox 360 disc. The cited Xbox documentation does not confirm Shrek 2 or Shrek SuperSlam in that catalog, so treat an original disc as an original-console purchase unless the current catalog says otherwise. Xbox Series S has no disc drive.

On PlayStation 5, Sony’s backward-compatibility policy covers the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. It does not establish support for PlayStation 2 discs, so a PS2 Shrek disc requires compatible PS2 hardware unless Sony offers a separately listed re-release.

On PC, the clearest documented digital route is Shrek Forever After on Steam. Valve announced its Steam availability on August 27, 2010, but a historical announcement is not proof that the game remains purchasable in every country. Check the current store page and your region before paying. A physical PC copy requires a DVD-ROM drive and may need compatibility work on current Windows.
Which Shrek game and release do you have?
Check the title, platform, publisher information, and disc format printed on the case or disc. A listing that simply says “Shrek 2” can refer to a console edition or a different Windows release.

What Microsoft’s backward compatibility actually covers
Microsoft describes Xbox One backward compatibility as a free feature for selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that you already own. The program is curated rather than universal; owning an original disc does not add an unlisted game to the catalog. Microsoft has also described more than 500,000 hours of testing behind the backward-compatibility effort, but that testing does not mean every Xbox-era title is supported.

For a digital backward-compatible game, sign in with the account that owns it and look in My games & apps, then Ready to install. For a supported disc game, insert the original disc. How to check before buying a disc
- Open Microsoft’s current Xbox backward-compatibility list on a phone or computer.
- Search for the exact title, not just “Shrek.” Check the platform and edition shown in the result.
- If the title is absent, assume the disc will not run on Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Do not rely on a seller’s “works on Xbox” wording.
- If the title is listed, confirm whether your console has a disc drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot read an original Xbox or Xbox 360 disc.
- For a digital purchase, verify that the current store listing is visible in your account and region before buying accessories or a used copy.
What this means for Shrek 2 and Shrek SuperSlam
The available Xbox documentation does not confirm either Shrek 2 or Shrek SuperSlam in the modern backward-compatibility catalog. Therefore, an original Xbox disc should be planned for original Xbox hardware, not treated as a guaranteed Xbox One or Series game. If Microsoft later adds an official listing, that live catalog entry—not the age of the disc—would be the evidence to use.
Playing PlayStation versions on PS5
PS4 compatibility is not PS2 compatibility
Sony says PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. That statement concerns PS4 software. It does not promise that PS2 discs can be inserted into a PS5 and played.
A PlayStation 2 copy of Shrek 2 or Shrek SuperSlam therefore needs a functioning PS2, or another officially supported system on which Sony has separately listed the game. Do not buy a PS2 disc for PS5 solely because the case carries the PlayStation name.

- Search the PlayStation Store on the console or in the store for the complete title.
- Read the product page’s supported platforms and edition details. A PS4 or PS5 label is different from a listing that only describes a PS2 classic.
- Check your account’s country or region, because licensing and availability can differ.
- Confirm the listing is an official purchase rather than a seller offering a physical disc or an account transfer.
Playing on a modern Windows PC
Steam: a documented lead, not a permanent guarantee
Valve’s August 27, 2010 announcement said: “The #1 animated franchise of all time is back with Shrek Forever After™ The Game and is now available for purchase on Steam.” That establishes a historical Steam release. It does not establish that the title is still sold, supported, or licensed in every market in 2026.

Before paying, open the current Steam page while signed into the account and region where you intend to play. Confirm that the purchase button is present, the listed operating-system requirements are visible, and the product is being sold by the official store rather than represented by a key reseller. Save the receipt and installer access associated with your account.
Physical PC editions
The official Shrek Forever After PC manual describes installation from a DVD-ROM. With autoplay enabled, Windows may start the installer; if nothing happens, the manual directs the player to open the disc and run setup.exe. A modern laptop often lacks an optical drive, so you may need a lawful external USB DVD drive that your computer recognizes.
The manual documents the original installation procedure, not guaranteed support for current Windows releases. The game may need an older compatibility mode, administrator permission, a display-mode adjustment, or a community-created patch. Use only patches distributed for the legitimate game you own, keep an unmodified backup of the original files, and scan downloads before running them.

- Confirm that the disc is the Windows edition and that your computer has an internal or external DVD-ROM drive.
- Install the game from the disc. If autoplay is disabled, open This PC, open the DVD drive, and run
setup.exe. - Install to a folder you can access without changing the original disc contents.
- Apply the game’s official updates if they are included with the edition. Do not download a cracked executable to bypass a disc check.
- Launch the game. If it fails, note the exact error, then try Windows compatibility settings for the original release era and a lower display resolution.
- Test saving, audio, controller input, and cutscenes before changing additional settings. Change one setting at a time so you can undo a failed fix.
Where preservation stores fit
GOG says its Preservation Program is intended to keep classic games playable on modern systems, with DRM-free delivery and dedicated technical support. That makes such a store worth checking when you want a maintained digital copy. The cited program information does not list a Shrek title, however, so it is a place to look rather than proof that any particular Shrek game is available.

If a preservation store has no listing, that does not make an unauthorized download legal. It simply leaves you with the authorized digital stores that do list the game or an authentic used copy for original hardware.
Buying a used copy without buying the wrong one
- Match the title and edition. For Shrek 2, distinguish PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC releases. Do the same for Shrek SuperSlam.
- Check the region. Confirm the disc’s region code and whether your console accepts that region. Region compatibility can matter even when the hardware name is identical.
- Inspect condition. Ask for clear photographs of the readable side, label, case, and manual. Deep scratches, disc rot, missing labels, or a damaged center ring can make a disc unreliable.
- Confirm what is included. A PC package may need its original disc or serial information; a console package may contain only the disc. Do not assume a missing manual is harmless if it contains installation information.
- Read the return policy. Used media can arrive defective or misidentified. Buy from a seller that accepts returns for an unreadable or incorrect platform.
- Verify modern support immediately before payment. Recheck the live Xbox catalog or current PC storefront. Compatibility, stock, and regional licensing can change.

Common failure modes and fixes
“The disc fits, but the console does nothing”
Physical size is not compatibility. Check whether the title appears in the console maker’s current backward-compatibility list. If it does not, use original hardware or an official re-release instead of repeatedly trying the disc.
“I bought a Series S and now have an Xbox disc”
Series S is digital-only. It cannot read the disc you own. Return the disc if the seller’s policy allows, locate an official digital listing, or use a compatible Xbox console with a drive.
“My PS5 runs PS4 games, so why not this PS2 disc?”
PS5’s stated policy is for PS4 software. A PS2 disc needs compatible PS2 hardware or a separately listed digital classic. The two generations use different compatibility arrangements.

“The Steam announcement says available, but I cannot buy it”
The announcement is from 2010. Search the current store while signed into your local account; a delisted or region-restricted product may no longer be purchasable. Do not substitute a download from an unauthorized archive.
“The DVD installs but the game will not start”
Legacy PC software can fail on modern Windows even when installation succeeds. Confirm that the disc is the PC edition, try compatibility settings, use a lower display mode, and look for a legitimate patch tied to your edition. Keep the original executable and installation files so you can reverse a change.
What not to do
- Do not download ROMs, disc images, or cracked executables from unauthorized sites merely because a game is old or unavailable digitally.
- Do not modify a console to bypass licensing or region restrictions when an authorized route is available.
- Do not assume that an online marketplace listing is official because it uses a familiar cover image.
- Do not pay a premium for a supposed “backward-compatible” disc without checking the live catalog yourself.
A sensible choice for each game
Shrek 2
For console play, buy the exact PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube edition only if you have the corresponding original hardware, unless an official modern listing specifically names the game. For PC, seek a legitimate Windows edition and verify its installation requirements before purchase.

Identify whether the listing is for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, or Windows. The ESRB record confirms those platforms and an E10+ rating for cartoon violence and crude humor, but it does not establish compatibility with current Xbox or PlayStation consoles.
Shrek Forever After
Check the current Steam listing first. If it is unavailable in your region, a genuine PC DVD is the documented physical alternative, provided you have a DVD-ROM drive and are prepared for possible legacy-Windows troubleshooting.
Budget for the complete setup
There is no single reliable price for these games: used stock, condition, region, and licensing change constantly. Calculate the complete cost rather than the disc price alone. A physical console copy may require the console, a compatible controller, memory or storage, shipping, and a return-risk allowance. A physical PC copy may require an external USB DVD drive. A digital copy may avoid those purchases but still require the correct account, storage, and a currently active listing.
When two legal routes are available, compare the authorized purchase price, hardware you already own, delivery or shipping, likelihood of needing a patch, and how easily you can return a defective copy. That calculation usually matters more than the cheapest listing headline.
