The most straightforward way to play your own classic PSP games on a current phone or computer is PPSSPP, the dedicated PSP emulator. Install the official build for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS, provide a game image that you are entitled to use, and open it from the app’s Games browser. PPSSPP does not include commercial games, does not require a downloaded BIOS, and does not run PSP UMD-Video discs or PS1 games that relied on the PSP’s separate PS1 emulator.
What you need before installing anything
A working setup has three separate parts: the emulator, a legally obtained game file, and a device capable of running the chosen build. PPSSPP is the relevant software for PSP games. It is available in official builds for Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Android VR; the current download page identifies version 1.20.4 as stable. Release details and operating-system support can change, so check the official PPSSPP download page when you install.

- Emulator: PPSSPP from its official download or app-store listing. Avoid unofficial “modded Gold” APKs.
- Game file: An ISO or CSO copied from a game you own, a PSP digital download copied from a real PSP, a permitted homebrew title or an official free demo. PPSSPP does not supply commercial games.
- Storage: Enough space for the game image and any saved data. A raw ISO is generally larger than a compressed CSO; you can begin with an ISO and optimize storage later.
- Controls: Touch controls are available on phones. A compatible USB or Bluetooth gamepad is optional, not a requirement.
The 1.20 line lists Android 5.0 or newer as its supported floor. Treat that as a version-specific requirement rather than a permanent promise: a later release may change the minimum. On Android 11 and newer, the app may ask you to select a PSP folder through the system storage picker.
What PPSSPP can and cannot emulate
PPSSPP emulates software originally made for the PlayStation Portable. It is designed for PSP game images, not every disc or application associated with the handheld.

Do not interpret “runs PSP games” as a guarantee that every title behaves identically on every device. The official material explains the software and its supported formats, but it does not provide a universal compatibility percentage or device-by-device performance benchmark.
Install the official PPSSPP build
Windows
The official page offers a conventional installer and a portable ZIP package. The installer is convenient for most people; the portable build can be unpacked to a folder without a traditional installation. Download from the official page, complete the setup, and launch PPSSPP. Both options use the same emulator features.
macOS
The macOS distribution is provided as a DMG. Open the DMG, move the application to the location you use for applications, and launch it. If macOS asks you to confirm that software downloaded from the internet should open, verify that the file came from the official PPSSPP page before accepting.

Official documentation describes Flatpak and AppImage routes. Use the package type that fits your distribution and existing software-management habits. After launching PPSSPP, the Games browser can navigate to the directory where you keep your PSP images.

Android
Install PPSSPP from its official store listing or the official APK route. The exact permission screens depend on the Android release. On Android 11 and newer, select a PSP folder when prompted, then place disc images in PSP/ISO inside that selected folder. If you choose a different storage location, use the app’s current folder-selection prompt rather than assuming that an older path will still be accepted.
iPhone and iPad
PPSSPP is available through the App Store according to its official FAQ and download information. Install that listing, then use the app’s current file-import or browsing controls to reach your game image. iOS storage permissions and import labels can change between app and operating-system releases, so follow the text shown on your device instead of an old screenshot.
Get a game file without using ROM-download sites
PPSSPP reads game files; it does not distribute copyrighted games. The official FAQ says users must provide their own ISO or CSO files. The technical instructions below describe ways to transfer media you already possess, not a blanket statement about copyright law. Rules for making or using a copy vary by jurisdiction, license and circumstance.
Use a PSP digital download copied from your own system
The official dumping documentation says PSP digital downloads copied from a real PSP can be played directly. The important distinction is that the file comes from your own hardware and account, rather than from an unknown download site. Keep the resulting image in a folder you can identify later, such as a dedicated PSP/ISO directory.

Dump a UMD with a PSP
If you own a UMD and choose to follow PPSSPP’s documented technical method, you need all of the following:
- A PSP running custom firmware capable of exposing the UMD as a USB storage device.
- The UMD you intend to copy.
- A computer or other device that can copy files through USB.
- A USB Mini cable, the connector used by the PSP for this procedure.
The process creates a virtual ISO on the connected computer. It is not a one-click conversion inside PPSSPP.
- Insert the UMD into the PSP.
- Open the custom-firmware menu and select “UMD Disc” as the USB device.
- In the PSP settings, choose USB Connection.
- Connect the PSP to the computer with the USB Mini cable.
- Open the removable device that appears and copy the virtual ISO file to your computer.
- Safely disconnect the PSP, then place the copied image in the game folder you will browse to from PPSSPP.
This is the workflow documented by PPSSPP for exposing a UMD as a file. Whether a particular copy is lawful depends on local law and the terms attached to the software; ownership of hardware alone is not a universal legal answer.

PPSSPP’s official guidance also points readers toward free demos and homebrew. These are useful if you want to verify that the emulator launches correctly without handling a commercial game image.

Open your first game
Windows and macOS
- Start PPSSPP and open the Games tab.
- Browse to the folder containing your ISO, CSO or supported CHD file.
- Select the game image. The title should appear in the browser and begin loading.
On desktop builds, you can also use File → Load and select the image directly. Keeping all of your own game images under one clearly named folder makes future browsing and backups easier.
Android
- Launch PPSSPP and open the Games tab.
- Navigate to the PSP folder you selected in Android’s storage picker.
- Open
PSP/ISOand select the game image.
If the game does not appear, confirm that the file is actually inside the selected PSP folder, that the extension is supported, and that Android has granted PPSSPP access to that folder. Re-selecting the folder through the current permission prompt can repair an outdated or revoked storage grant.
iOS
Use the import or file-browsing control shown by the current App Store build, then select the image in the location where you saved it. The exact labels can differ by release. Do not assume that an iPhone has access to the same folders as a Windows PC or Android phone; iOS normally mediates app file access through its document picker.
Start with default settings, then troubleshoot one change at a time
PPSSPP’s introduction says its defaults should generally be fine. That is the safest starting point because changing several graphics or timing options at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of a problem. Launch the game with defaults, play long enough to observe the issue, and change one setting before testing again.

- Game does not appear: Check the folder permission, file extension and selected directory first. A storage-path problem is more likely than a graphics setting.
- The file will not load: Confirm that it is an ISO, CSO or supported CHD and that the copy completed without errors. Try a known-good demo or homebrew title to separate an image problem from an emulator problem.
- Controls do not respond: Recheck the control mapping and disconnect other input devices temporarily. On Android, accessibility settings or overlay apps can interfere with joystick input.
- A game behaves unexpectedly: Return to the default configuration, then alter only the setting relevant to the symptom. There is no source-backed universal setting that fixes every title.
- Storage is tight: Keep the original ISO as a backup before experimenting with compression. CSO is supported directly, and CHD support begins with version 1.17; neither format is mandatory.
Touch controls versus a physical controller
A phone can be used with on-screen controls, but a physical pad may be more comfortable for games designed around PSP buttons and analog input. PPSSPP documents support for XInput and DirectInput controllers on Windows. On Android, many Bluetooth gamepads work, although the FAQ notes that some have limitations.

A controller is therefore a comfort choice, not a prerequisite. If you buy one, choose a pad that your operating system recognizes normally before troubleshooting PPSSPP-specific mappings.
Do you need a PSP BIOS file?
No. PPSSPP’s official FAQ states: “No. PPSSPP simulates the BIOS and the entire internal operating system.” Do not download a separate PSP BIOS package or place an unverified BIOS file in the emulator’s folders. The normal setup requires the emulator and your game image, not a BIOS dump.

PPSSPP uses a just-in-time recompiler to translate code for speed. Its FAQ explains that runtime code generation is allowed on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, while it is disallowed in App Store applications on iOS. The FAQ also describes the App Store versions as generally fine.
This is a technical distinction, not proof that every iPhone game is slower or that every Android device is faster. The available official material does not provide controlled, device-by-device benchmarks. Compare your actual phone or computer by official-build availability, input preference, file-management convenience and the behavior of the particular game you want to play.
Choosing between a phone and a PC

If you own both types of device, choose based on where your game files are easiest to store, whether you prefer touch or a larger physical controller, and which platform is convenient to keep connected to your display. Do not select one solely from a promised frame-rate number; the official sources do not establish a universal benchmark.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching for a BIOS: PPSSPP simulates it, so a download is unnecessary.
- Expecting games inside the app: PPSSPP cannot distribute commercial game files; you must provide your own.
- Using a UMD directly in a phone: The disc must first be transferred as a file through a separate PSP-based process.
- Assuming every PSP-related title works: UMD-Video and PS1 titles using the PSP’s proprietary emulator are outside PPSSPP’s stated scope.
- Installing an unofficial APK: Use the official download or store listing, not a “modded” package from an unknown site.
- Changing many settings immediately: Start with defaults and make one controlled change when a specific problem appears.
- Treating ownership as universal legal clearance: Copying and using game images is governed by the law and license terms that apply where you live.
A quick setup checklist
- Confirm that your operating system is supported by the current official PPSSPP release.
- Install PPSSPP from its official source; do not use a modified APK.
- Prepare an ISO, CSO or supported CHD that you are entitled to use, or test with permitted homebrew or a free demo.
- On Android 11 or newer, select the PSP folder requested by the app and place images in
PSP/ISO. - Open the Games tab; on desktop, File → Load is also available.
- Run the game with default settings.
- Add and map a compatible controller only if touch or keyboard controls are uncomfortable.
- If something fails, diagnose the file path, format, permissions and input device before changing graphics settings.
What to expect from the finished setup
Once the app can see a valid game image, the basic experience is intentionally simple: select the title from the Games tab and play. The complexity is mostly outside the emulator—obtaining a file through a defensible route, placing it where the operating system permits access, and choosing controls that suit the device. PPSSPP Gold is described in the official FAQ as a way to support development; it is not required to run the emulator.
