Open PlayStation Plus, find a title, and use the Download or Stream option shown for that game. In the United States, Classics Catalog access is part of PlayStation Plus Premium. Some games—especially a wide selection of classic PS3 titles—are streaming-only, and a PS5 cannot read PS3 game discs.
Catalog contents, membership names, and availability vary by country and change over time. Treat the listing on your own console as the final authority before subscribing, downloading, or assuming a game will stream.

What “classic PlayStation games” means on PS4 and PS5
PlayStation uses the Classics Catalog for a rotating selection of older games. Depending on the title and region, the catalog can include games originally released for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PSP, and selected PS3-era releases. A game appears only when it is licensed for your region and included in your current PlayStation Plus plan.

Which PlayStation Plus plan includes the Classics Catalog?
For US accounts, Sony’s PlayStation Plus comparison places Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming in the Premium tier. Essential provides the core membership benefits, while Extra adds the Game Catalog; neither is listed with Classics Catalog access in the US comparison.
| US PlayStation Plus tier | Classics Catalog | Cloud streaming | What this means for classic games |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Not listed | Not listed | Does not provide the Classics Catalog benefit shown in Sony’s US comparison. |
| Extra | Not listed | Not listed | Adds the Game Catalog, but is not shown with Classics Catalog access. |
| Premium | Included | Included | Lets eligible members download or stream games when the individual listing offers that method. |
Plan names and benefits can differ outside the United States. Check the PlayStation Plus page for your account’s country rather than assuming that the US tier names or benefits apply to you.
Membership access is not the same as permanent ownership. If a title leaves the catalog, or your membership no longer includes the relevant benefit, you may lose access even if the game remains installed. The individual game page can show a service end date or other restriction.

Find the Classics Catalog
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll to PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Browse or search for the game you want, then open its listing.
The title page is important: it tells you whether that specific game can be downloaded, streamed, or both. A catalog category by itself does not guarantee a particular play method.
Download a title when Download is offered
- Open the game’s listing in Classics Catalog.
- Select Download.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then launch the game from the Games home screen or your Game Library.
Downloading avoids the need for an active streaming session while you play, but the game still remains tied to the eligible PlayStation Plus membership and the service’s availability rules.
Stream a title when Stream is offered
- Open the game’s listing.
- Select Stream.
- Wait for the cloud session to start. A queue can appear when demand is high.
Streaming does not create a local installation. Your connection must meet Sony’s minimum requirement, and the session is subject to the limitations described below.
Use the Game Library if you already claimed or installed a title
Sony also says PlayStation Plus games can be found in the Game Library. If you previously added an eligible game, check the library as well as the Classics Catalog. The listing still determines whether you can launch it, download it, or stream it under your current plan.

How to play a classic game on PS4
- From the PS4 function screen, scroll to PlayStation Plus.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Choose an eligible game.
- Select Download or Stream when that option is shown.
If the Classics Catalog entry is missing, confirm that the signed-in account has the required membership and that the console’s account region matches the catalog you are trying to use. Catalog presentation can change as Sony updates the service.
Download or stream: which method should you choose?
| Factor | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Internet during play | Not dependent on a live cloud session after installation, although normal account checks may still apply. | Requires a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps; a queue may occur. |
| 1080p video | Determined by the installed version and console output. | Requires a title that supports 1080p and a connection of at least 15 Mbps. |
| Storage | Uses console storage. | Does not install the full game locally. |
| Catalog restrictions | Only available when the listing offers Download and your plan qualifies. | Some classic PS3 games are streaming-only. |
| Session limitations | Does not use the streaming-session restrictions listed by Sony. | Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, HD Camera, PlayStation Camera, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, and third-party controllers are not supported while streaming. |
| Service availability | Access ends if the title leaves the catalog or your qualifying membership ends. | Access ends under the same catalog and membership rules, and the game cannot start if cloud streaming is unavailable. |
Choose Download when it is offered and you want to avoid queues or connection-dependent play. Choose Stream when you lack storage, want to try a game immediately, or the listing does not provide a download. For a streaming-only PS3 title, there is no download workaround through the Classics Catalog.
Streaming requirements and controller limitations
Connection speed
Sony specifies a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for Classics Catalog streaming. To stream at 1080p, the game must support 1080p and the connection should be at least 15 Mbps. If your connection is slower or unstable, the stream can drop to a lower resolution.
These are connection requirements, not a guarantee of a perfect session. Wi-Fi interference, other devices using the network, congestion, and a busy streaming service can still affect the experience. If a session repeatedly fails, test the console on a more stable connection, pause large downloads on the network, and try again later if a queue is displayed.
Features that are disabled during streaming
While streaming on PS4 or PS5, Sony lists these unsupported features and accessories:
- Broadcasting
- Share Play and Share Screen
- Remote Play
- HD Camera and PlayStation Camera
- Mouse and keyboard
- PSVR
- PS Move
- Third-party controllers
A compatible first-party controller is therefore the safest choice for a streamed classic. You do not need a special retro adapter for the Classics Catalog, and Sony cautions that not every third-party controller will work.
How Select and Start work for streamed PS3 games
For PS3 games streamed through the service, Sony maps Select to the left side of the touchpad and Start to the right side on DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers. You must click the touchpad rather than merely tap it. This matters in games that use the original Select or Start functions for menus, maps, inventory, or pause screens.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. Sony’s backward-compatibility support page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Do not insert an original PS3 disc into a PS5, and do not buy a PS3 disc expecting it to unlock the same game on the newer console.
Sony also warns that a PS4 digital game obtained through the PS3 game-to-PS4 upgrade program may require the original PS3 disc. Because a PS5 cannot use that PS3 disc, the upgrade cannot be treated as a general PS5 solution.
The documented restriction is specifically about PS3 discs. The official pages covered here do not establish a complete compatibility matrix for every PS1, PS2, or PSP retail disc on every PS4 and PS5 model. Do not assume that a legacy disc works simply because a similarly named digital version appears in the Classics Catalog.
Examples of games and catalog categories
PlayStation’s US editorial catalog page groups examples into PS1 Classics, PS2 Classics, PSP Classics, and PS3 and PS4-era classics. These examples show the types of releases Sony has featured; they are not a permanent inventory.
| Category | Examples Sony has named | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 Classics | Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, The Legend of Dragoon, Tekken 2, Ridge Racer Type 4 | Whether the game is currently listed in your region and whether Download, Stream, or both are offered. |
| PS2 Classics | Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Dark Cloud, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus | The current catalog listing and the membership required for access. |
| PSP Classics | Killzone: Liberation, Resistance: Retribution | Whether the title remains available and which play method appears on its page. |
| PS3 and PS4-era examples | Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, God of War III Remastered, The Last of Us Remastered | Whether the listing is part of your current catalog; some classic PS3 games are streaming-only. |
The original PlayStation launched in 1994, but its age alone does not determine whether a particular release is playable on PS4 or PS5. Licensing, region, platform version, membership tier, and catalog status do.
How to decide whether Premium is worthwhile
If you want several older games
Premium is the relevant US tier because it includes the Classics Catalog. Make a short list of the games you actually intend to play, search for each one on your local console, and check whether each is downloadable or streaming-only before subscribing.
If you want one specific game
Do not assume that Premium includes every classic release. Search the exact title first. If it is absent, unavailable in your region, or marked with a removal date, a subscription may not solve your problem. An individually sold version can be another route when the title is offered for your console, but availability and pricing must be checked in the current local PlayStation Store listing.

- Play games streamed from your PS5 or PS4 console to your PC via the PS Remote Play App
If your internet connection is unreliable
Prefer a downloadable version when the title page offers one. Streaming requires at least 5 Mbps, can lower resolution when conditions are poor, and can place you in a queue. A streaming-only PS3 game remains dependent on those conditions.
If you want to use a disc collection
Do not choose a PS5 on the assumption that it will run PS3 discs. The explicit PS3-disc restriction makes the Classics Catalog or a separately sold compatible digital version the practical options covered by this guide.

Classics Catalog does not appear
- Check that the account is signed in to the intended region.
- Verify that the membership is the tier that includes Classics Catalog in that region; in the US, that is Premium.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the console interface rather than relying on an old saved link or bookmark.
- Check the current catalog listing because Sony can change categories and availability.
There is no Download button
The title may be streaming-only, particularly among classic PS3 releases, or it may not be included under your current plan. Open the complete game listing and read the available actions instead of assuming that every catalog item has a local version.
There is no Stream button
The title may support download only, streaming may not be offered for your region or console, or your membership may not include cloud streaming. Confirm the plan and the exact title page.
The stream is blurry or keeps disconnecting
- Check that the connection meets the 5 Mbps minimum.
- For 1080p, verify both the 15 Mbps recommendation and the game’s 1080p support.
- Reduce competing network traffic and, where practical, use a more stable connection.
- Allow a queued session to start; a queue does not mean the game is unavailable.
The controller or accessory does not work
Streaming does not support third-party controllers, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, cameras, Remote Play, or sharing features listed by Sony. Use a compatible DualSense on PS5 or DUALSHOCK 4 on PS4. For streamed PS3 games, click—not tap—the appropriate side of the touchpad for Select and Start.
A game disappeared after you played it
Check the title page for a removal date, confirm that your membership is still active, and verify that you are using the same account and region. Catalog access is temporary service access, not permanent ownership.

What to check before you subscribe or start a download
- Region: Is the game listed in the country attached to your PlayStation account?
- Plan: Does your local PlayStation Plus tier include Classics Catalog and, if needed, cloud streaming?
- Method: Does the title show Download, Stream, or both?
- Connection: Can your network reliably meet 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming when the game supports it?
- Accessories: Are you using a supported controller, especially for a streamed session?
- Longevity: Is there a removal date or other notice that limits access?
- Media: Are you avoiding PS3 discs on PS5?
The practical answer
Use the Classics Catalog on your PS4 or PS5, open the exact game listing, and follow the Download or Stream option it provides. In the US, Premium is the PlayStation Plus tier that includes the catalog. Download when available if you want to avoid streaming limits; stream when the title is streaming-only or you prefer not to install it. Always verify the live local listing, because region, membership, play method, and service availability can change.
