You cannot officially play Nintendo’s NES, Super NES, or Game Boy Nintendo Classics apps on a Switch without an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says those games are not planned for individual sale outside the service, so there is no hidden Virtual Console purchase option that bypasses the subscription.
The subscription-free alternative is to buy a separately sold Switch port or a licensed retro compilation. Those products have their own catalogs: a Mega Drive, arcade, or Atari collection does not unlock Nintendo’s subscription library and may not contain the game you want.

Which classic Nintendo libraries require a subscription?
Nintendo divides its classic-game apps between the standard Nintendo Switch Online plan and the higher Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack plan. The membership belongs to the Nintendo Account launching the app; a different account’s subscription on the same console does not satisfy that requirement. Nintendo’s current rules are summarized in its Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ.
| Classic library | Membership needed | Console availability stated by Nintendo |
|---|---|---|
| NES | Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo Switch |
| Super NES | Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo Switch |
| Game Boy | Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo Switch |
| Nintendo 64 | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Nintendo Switch |
| SEGA Genesis | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Nintendo Switch |
| Game Boy Advance | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Nintendo Switch |
| Virtual Boy | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Nintendo Switch |
| GameCube | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Nintendo Switch 2 only |
Expansion Pack is not required for NES, Super NES, or Game Boy. It adds the higher-generation libraries listed above. If the specific game you want appears only in one of these Nintendo Classics apps, the official Switch route requires the corresponding membership tier.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This distinction matters when comparing prices. Paying for Expansion Pack does not create a separate purchase license for a particular Nintendo 64 or Game Boy Advance title; it provides access to the applicable library while the membership remains active. Likewise, standard Nintendo Switch Online is enough for the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy apps. Do not upgrade simply because a game is old: identify the app first, then choose the tier that Nintendo assigns to it.
Does the subscription work on every account and offline?
No. The account that opens the Nintendo Classics software must itself have the required membership. If Account A is subscribed and Account B is not, launching the app under Account B will not be authorized merely because both accounts use the same Switch.
Nintendo permits offline play after the app has been installed, but the console must go online periodically to validate membership. Nintendo’s support information says the check is required every seven days. If the membership expires, the classic games become inaccessible until the subscription is renewed; save data stays on the console and can be used again when access is restored.
That seven-day rule is easy to overlook when planning a trip. “Downloaded” does not mean “permanently unlocked.” Before leaving, open the app with the subscribed account while the console is connected. If the trip lasts longer than the validation window, plan for a way to reconnect. A second profile cannot be used as a backup authorization method, and changing controllers has no effect on the check.
How to install the Nintendo Classics app when you do have a membership
The app is downloaded through the subscribed account rather than purchased as an individual game. Nintendo gives the access procedure in its How to Access the Nintendo Classics Game Libraries article.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch using the Nintendo Account that has the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online or membership-content area in eShop.
- Select the classic library that matches your plan, such as Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or Game Boy.
- Choose the option to download the application. The app itself is included with the membership; the individual games inside it are not separate eShop purchases.
- Launch the app with the same subscribed account. Connect the console to the internet at least once within each seven-day validation period if you expect to play offline afterward.
If the application reports that a membership is required, first check which account launched it and which library you selected. Buying a controller, reinstalling the app, or switching to another unsubscribed account cannot change the entitlement.
Use the same account at each stage. Opening eShop with one profile and then launching the app with another can make the software appear unavailable even though the console has an active subscription elsewhere. The account requirement is attached to the user’s Nintendo Account, not merely to the hardware or the presence of an installed icon.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy you cannot buy Nintendo Classics games one at a time
Nintendo’s FAQ says, “There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.” The same support material says Nintendo Classics games are not planned for sale outside Nintendo Switch Online. That means the Switch does not offer a separate Virtual Console storefront where you can permanently buy the NES, Super NES, or Game Boy app titles individually.
This policy is narrower than saying that no old games can ever be bought on Switch. Nintendo and other publishers can sell standalone ports or packaged compilations through eShop and retail channels. Those releases are independent products with independent licenses and catalogs; purchasing one does not grant access to the Nintendo Classics app.
In practical terms, search results can be misleading. A page for an independently sold retro game may use the same character, series, or era as a Nintendo Classics title, but it is still a separate product. Conversely, a game shown in a Nintendo Classics promotional image is not evidence that an individual eShop listing exists. Treat the app and the separately sold release as two different purchase paths.
Official subscription-free ways to play classic-style games
To avoid Nintendo Switch Online, choose a game that is sold separately for Switch or a licensed collection whose list includes the title you want. The following examples are documented products, not substitutes for Nintendo’s subscription library.

| Product | Publisher or catalog focus | Catalog information stated on the cited page | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Konami arcade games | Number of games not stated on the cited Nintendo product page | Confirm that the exact arcade title and your region’s edition are included |
| SEGA Mega Drive Classics | SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis-era games | More than 50 titles, according to Nintendo Australia | Check the local listing, included-game list, and whether you are buying a physical or digital edition |
| Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration | Atari arcade, console, and historical catalog | Atari describes 90-plus classic games in the standard edition and more than 100 playable classics in the expanded edition | Check whether the seller is offering the standard or expanded edition and what your regional package contains |
The game counts above are product descriptions from the named publishers or platform stores, not a general count of retro games available on Switch. A collection covering Atari, Konami arcade machines, or Mega Drive games may have a completely different catalog from NES or Super NES.
These examples also show why “retro collection” is not a single format. Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection is centered on Konami arcade releases; SEGA Mega Drive Classics represents a Mega Drive/Genesis-era catalog; Atari 50 covers Atari’s arcade, console, and historical library. Their controls, versions, bonus material, and game lists are not interchangeable with Nintendo’s first-party apps.
How to check whether a collection contains the game you want
1. Start with the exact title and version
Write down the precise game name, including subtitles, regional names, and whether you want an NES, arcade, Game Boy, or another version. A collection may include an arcade release but not the later home-console port, or a regional version with different content.
Do not rely on a franchise name alone. If you want a specific Nintendo release, note its platform and version before searching. “The same game” can mean an arcade edition, a console conversion, or a handheld release, and a publisher may list only one of those.
2. Match the publisher and hardware generation
Konami’s arcade anthology, SEGA’s Mega Drive collection, and Atari 50 represent different companies and platforms. Do not infer that a game is included because it looks similar to a Nintendo Classics title or was released in the same decade.
The original hardware also affects expectations about controls and presentation. A collection built around arcade games is not a replacement for a home-console version merely because both use the same characters. Read the included-game list and platform description rather than judging from screenshots or the collection’s general theme.
3. Read the current local listing
The cited SEGA page is Nintendo Australia’s listing, while the Konami page is a U.S. Nintendo Store listing. eShop catalogs, retail packaging, ratings, languages, and availability can differ by country. Search your own regional eShop and inspect the publisher’s current product page before paying.
Regional checking is especially important when a comparison uses a product page from another country. A title, bundle, rating, language option, or physical edition shown there may not appear in your local store. Confirm the listing attached to the Nintendo Account and retailer you will actually use.

Atari’s product page distinguishes a standard edition from an expanded edition. Physical and digital releases can also differ in included extras, delivery method, or storage requirements. Record the edition name shown at checkout rather than relying on a retailer’s shortened title.
Game-count claims must be read alongside the edition. Atari describes 90-plus classic games for the standard edition and more than 100 playable classics for the expanded edition. Those figures do not mean every edition contains every item, nor do they indicate that the collection includes Nintendo’s NES or Super NES library.

5. Decide whether permanent ownership or access is your priority
A separately sold port or compilation is not tied to Nintendo Switch Online validation, but its availability depends on that product’s regional sale and licensing. Nintendo Classics access, by contrast, remains tied to an active membership and the subscribed account.
This is a choice between two different access models. Nintendo Classics offers a curated app library while the membership is active and validated. A separately purchased release is obtained as its own Switch product, with the catalog, edition, and regional availability shown on that product’s listing. Neither model should be assumed to include games outside its stated catalog.

Can a classic-style controller bypass Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics listing identifies the Nintendo wireless NES controller as optional. You can play the library with the regular Joy-Con or another compatible controller, but the software still requires Nintendo Switch Online. The controller changes comfort and feel; it does not change account authorization.
That accessory can be worthwhile if you prefer a traditional layout, but it is not a license, activation key, or substitute for a membership. Buying the controller first will not make a locked app playable. Decide on hardware after confirming which software route you are taking.
Practical choices for common situations
You want an NES, Super NES, or Game Boy game that appears only in Nintendo Classics
The official Switch solution is to subscribe to standard Nintendo Switch Online, launch the app with the subscribed account, and maintain periodic online validation. Nintendo does not currently offer that game as an individual Virtual Console-style purchase.
You want a Nintendo 64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, or GameCube classic
Check the relevant library first. Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy, with GameCube classics limited to Nintendo Switch 2. If you do not want that tier, look for a separately sold release only if a publisher has actually listed that exact title for Switch.
You want retro games but do not want any Nintendo subscription
Look for a separately sold port or licensed anthology. Use the exact title list, region, edition, and format to determine whether the purchase meets your goal. A third-party compilation can provide subscription-free play, but only for its own listed games.
Another person on the console has Nintendo Switch Online
Use the subscribed Nintendo Account to access the Nintendo Classics app. The other account’s membership does not authorize an unsubscribed profile, even on the same hardware.
You plan to travel without reliable internet
With a valid membership, download the app while online and complete the required validation before leaving. Nintendo’s seven-day check means an extended offline trip can interrupt access if the console cannot reconnect. A separately purchased port or compilation avoids that particular membership check, subject to the product’s own software requirements.
You own a Switch 2 and are interested in GameCube classics
GameCube classics are listed as available only on Nintendo Switch 2 and require Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Owning the newer console does not remove the membership requirement.

You found a collection with a large advertised game count
Read the detailed list rather than assuming the number answers your question. More than 50 Mega Drive titles, 90-plus Atari classics, or more than 100 playable classics in an expanded Atari edition still represent those publishers’ catalogs, not a combined Nintendo library. Verify the exact game, version, and edition.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing standard and Expansion Pack tiers: NES, Super NES, and Game Boy use standard Nintendo Switch Online; the additional systems require Expansion Pack.
- Assuming a family member’s subscription covers every profile: the account launching the app must have the membership.
- Expecting an installed app to work indefinitely offline: Nintendo says membership verification is required every seven days.
- Searching for a hidden Virtual Console menu: Nintendo says there are currently no plans to sell Nintendo Classics games outside the service.
- Buying by franchise or decade: a collection’s theme does not prove that a particular version is included.
- Ignoring regional editions: listings, ratings, languages, packaging, and availability can vary by country.
- Treating a controller as an access solution: the NES-style controller is optional hardware only.
- Using the headline game count instead of the edition name: standard and expanded editions can contain different catalogs.
A purchase and setup checklist
- Identify whether the desired game is in Nintendo’s NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, or GameCube app.
- Choose the membership tier required for that library, remembering that NES, Super NES, and Game Boy use standard Nintendo Switch Online.
- Make sure the launching Nintendo Account—not merely another profile on the console—has the membership.
- If avoiding subscriptions, search for a separately sold Switch release or licensed collection instead of looking for an individual Nintendo Classics purchase.
- Open the current regional product page and verify the exact title, version, publisher, edition, language, and physical or digital format.
- Check whether a collection’s advertised game count refers to a standard or expanded edition.
- If you need offline access through Nintendo Classics, connect at least once every seven days for validation.
- Treat a retro controller as optional hardware for ergonomics, not as an access method.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy an NES game from the Switch eShop without Nintendo Switch Online?
Not when that game is offered only through the Nintendo Classics app. Nintendo says Nintendo Classics games are not planned for sale outside Nintendo Switch Online and says there are currently no plans for a Virtual Console storefront on Switch.
Is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack required for NES games?
No. Nintendo places NES, Super NES, and Game Boy in standard Nintendo Switch Online. Expansion Pack is for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube classics on Switch 2.
Will another user’s membership unlock the app on my profile?
No. The Nintendo Account that launches the classic library must have the required membership, even if another account on the same console is subscribed.
Can I play Nintendo Classics offline?
Yes, after installation and membership validation, but Nintendo says the console must verify the membership online every seven days. If the membership ends, the games become inaccessible until it is renewed; save data remains on the console.
Does the wireless NES controller remove the subscription requirement?
No. Nintendo identifies the controller as optional. It changes the control feel but does not alter the software’s membership requirement.
Are SEGA Mega Drive Classics and Atari 50 Nintendo Classics replacements?
No. They are separately sold products with their own catalogs. Nintendo Australia describes SEGA Mega Drive Classics as containing more than 50 titles. Atari describes 90-plus classics in Atari 50’s standard edition and more than 100 playable classics in its expanded edition. Check each list for the exact game you want.
Can I use a collection from another country’s store?
Check your own regional eShop or retailer. The cited pages come from different markets, and availability, editions, ratings, languages, and packaging can differ by country.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if the app says a membership is required?
Confirm that the correct Nintendo Account launched the app and that the library matches the membership tier. Reinstalling the app, changing profiles, or connecting a special controller cannot replace the required account entitlement.
Bottom line
Nintendo Classics on Switch are a membership service, not a store of individually purchasable retro games. Standard Nintendo Switch Online covers NES, Super NES, and Game Boy; Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and—on Switch 2—GameCube. If you do not want Nintendo Switch Online, the legitimate path is a separately sold Switch game or licensed compilation whose own catalog includes the classic you want.
