Buying, editions, and the PS5 label
When you open the store page, verify three things before selecting the purchase or download control: the complete title is BlazBlue: Central Fiction, the platform is PS4, and the page says it is playable on PS5. A similarly named BlazBlue game is a different product, so do not rely on a shortened search result alone.
The listing credits Arc System Works as developer and Aksys Games as publisher and gives November 1, 2016 as the PS4 release date. Those credits help confirm that you have reached the correct entry. The official listing does not describe a paid PS5 upgrade, a separate enhanced build, or a second PS5 version. Install the PS4 edition on PS5
1. Find the correct listing
Open the PlayStation Store on the PS5 and search for BlazBlue: Central Fiction. Confirm that the product is identified as the PS4 game and that the listing says it is playable on PS5. If a search result appears to be a different BlazBlue title, check the complete name before buying or downloading.
The official listing’s platform label is the useful check: you are acquiring the PS4 edition that PS5 can run, rather than selecting between separate PS4 and PS5 builds.
2. Update the console when required
Before launching, allow the PS5 to install any available system-software update. The game’s store page says the latest system software may be needed, and Sony’s manual makes current system software part of PS4-on-PS5 support. If the game refuses to start or displays a compatibility prompt, finish the console update, restart if the system requests it, and try again.
Do not interpret a system-update request as evidence that you purchased the wrong edition. It is a normal condition of running supported PS4 software on PS5.

3. Purchase or download and wait for installation
Complete the PlayStation Store purchase, or select the download option if you already own the game. Sony’s manual says a purchased game can be downloaded and then launched from Games home once it is ready. Keep the console connected to the internet and remain signed in while the transaction and download are being completed.
Do not launch from the icon until the installation is ready. If the game appears on Games home while content is still downloading, wait for the system’s ready state rather than assuming every component is installed.

4. Launch from Games home
When installation finishes, select the BlazBlue: Central Fiction tile in Games home. The game opens as the PS4 release under PS5 backward compatibility. Any on-screen compatibility notice should be read as a limitation warning, not as a claim that the game is unsupported.

Start by learning the game’s vocabulary
Choose Tutorial and work through the explanations of basic rules before worrying about advanced execution. The mode also includes advanced techniques, hints, and character-specific tactics, so it is useful beyond the first few minutes. If a lesson introduces a term or action you do not recognize, finish that lesson before moving to a match; the later drills assume you understand the fundamentals it presents.
Move to Training for repetition
Training is the controlled practice area. Its official description specifically calls out adjustable health and Heat settings, situation recreation, special-move checks, and combo rehearsal. Use those controls to create the same starting condition repeatedly instead of resetting through full matches.
A sensible sequence is to verify a special move first, then connect two or three attacks, and only then attempt a longer combo. The mode is designed for this kind of repeatable work; it is not necessary to enter an online match to test whether a command is being recognized.
Use Challenge for guided character work
Challenge presents character-specific tasks that become more difficult. It combines movement instruction with combo practice, making it a useful bridge between Tutorial explanations and unscripted matches. If you are unsure which character to commit to, use the early tasks as a low-pressure way to sample movement and attack patterns before spending time on harder drills.
Play Arcade or VS when you want action immediately
Arcade uses the arcade version’s story and computer-controlled opponents. VS is the direct option for an offline CPU battle or a second local player. These modes let you play immediately, but they do not replace Tutorial or Training when you need an explanation or a repeatable practice setup.
Choosing a mode by your goal
- I have never played a fighting game: start with Tutorial, then repeat the relevant actions in Training.
- I know fighting games but not Central Fiction: use Tutorial for the game’s rules and character-specific advice, then move to Challenge.
- I want to test a character quickly: select Training to check special moves and movement before committing to longer drills.
- I want a solo match now: choose Arcade for the arcade-style story route or VS for a direct CPU battle.
- I have another person beside me: use VS for an offline two-player battle.
This progression keeps explanation, repetition, structured tasks, and matches in separate spaces. You can return to any mode whenever a command or movement option needs another look.
How to look up commands during play
The in-game pause menu includes a command list for both the player and the opponent. That is the quickest reference when you know what a move should do but not how to input it. Pause outside the restricted network contexts and open the command-list entry to see the available move commands.

The FAQ identifies three situations in which the command list is not available: while in a network match, while spectating, and while in a room. If the list is missing, leave that context and check again from a mode in which pausing and command viewing are supported. This restriction is different from a failed controller input; it concerns when the reference menu can be opened.
Controller choices and arcade sticks

The official material for this guide does not state a PlayStation Plus requirement, server availability by region, matchmaking population, or a current network-performance guarantee. The store shows only a PS4 version
That is expected for this title. The official US listing identifies the game as PS4 software that is playable on PS5. Confirm the title and the PS5-playable notice, then install that edition.
The game asks for a system update

The game appears in Games home but will not start
- Check that the download and installation have completed rather than merely appearing as a tile.
- Confirm that the PS5 is signed in to the account that purchased or owns the game.
- Apply any pending console system-software update.
- Restart the console after the update and try the game again.
These checks address the documented download, sign-in, installation, and system-software prerequisites without assuming a particular error code.
You cannot open the command list

Test the exact stick model against its manufacturer’s supported-console information. Arc System Works does not guarantee every arcade stick, and the FAQ does not certify a model for PS5. Keep a standard PS5 gamepad available for setup and troubleshooting so you can distinguish a game launch problem from an accessory-compatibility problem.
An online feature behaves differently than expected
Verify that you are signed in to a PlayStation account and that the console is connected to the internet.
