Loop repeats the selected playlist; Autoplay instead chooses another related video. This setup can play overnight, but it is not a guaranteed unattended 24/7 system: YouTube may pause playback, and a power, network, or browser interruption may require manual recovery.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry Pi OS desktop installed on a microSD card. Raspberry Pi describes Raspberry Pi OS as its official free operating system and its 64-bit version as intended for newer models including Pi 5. The setup guide explains that the microSD card stores the OS and files: Raspberry Pi OS documentation and Raspberry Pi setup guide.
- A display and an audio device suitable for the room, such as the display’s speakers or connected speakers.
- A reliable internet connection for YouTube playback.
- A suitable Pi 5 power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 5 A and its 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. With a 5 V at 3 A supply, the stated power available to peripherals is limited to 600 mA. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance.
Cooling is not automatically a required purchase for this use. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 article says cooling is optional for normal use and notes that YouTube viewing is less demanding than its heavy CPU stress test. How do I loop a YouTube playlist?
- Start the Pi 5 and open the desktop browser.
- Go to YouTube and open a video that belongs to the bedtime-story playlist you want to play.
- Expand the playlist box beside the player if it is collapsed.
- Click Loop in the playlist controls. YouTube’s computer instructions say the playlist will repeat continuously when this control is enabled: YouTube Help: loop videos or playlists on a computer.
- Check that the playlist Loop control is enabled, then let the current video finish and confirm playback proceeds through the playlist and returns to its beginning.
The cited instructions cover YouTube on a computer. They do not establish a Raspberry Pi-specific browser configuration, so verify the controls and playback behavior in the browser and YouTube interface available on your Pi.

YouTube documents Autoplay as a setting that plays another related video after the current one, and its controls can differ by device. On a computer, Autoplay is controlled from the player. See YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.

How do I keep bedtime stories playing overnight?
Playlist Loop is the relevant YouTube setting, but it does not make the entire Pi-and-YouTube setup self-healing. Before leaving it to play, check the full path from power to sound:
- Confirm the intended stories are actually in the playlist, in the order you want, and that playlist Loop is enabled.
- Play several transitions, including the end of the playlist and its return to the beginning.
- Set the room’s audio level and confirm sound comes from the intended device.
- Check that the Pi has stable power and the network connection works where it will be used.
- Check how the display behaves in the room, including whether it dims or turns off in a way that affects your setup.
These checks help catch ordinary setup problems; they are not a guarantee of continuous playback. The available guidance does not establish automatic recovery after a power loss, browser failure, or lost network connection, nor does it document a Raspberry Pi kiosk or browser auto-start procedure for this use.

Will YouTube stop playing if I leave it on?
It may. YouTube documents a “Continue watching?” prompt during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing: it may appear after 60 minutes on the web or 180 minutes on a TV. Those timings describe the prompt behavior in YouTube Help, not a promise that playlist Loop will run unattended indefinitely. See YouTube Help: why YouTube asks “Continue watching?”.
Network interruptions, power loss, or a browser problem can also stop local playback. The sources available do not establish that the Pi will restart YouTube or resume the playlist automatically after such an interruption. If an adult needs to check playback later, plan for that rather than treating the setup as a guaranteed 24/7 player.

Choose bedtime-story videos and playlists carefully
A playlist setting does not grant rights to use its videos or make them suitable for every audience. Use recordings you are allowed to play, and review the playlist’s title and description for accuracy. YouTube’s playlist policy prohibits misleading titles or descriptions and identifies certain collections of otherwise individual videos as disallowed; it does not determine the rights status of any particular bedtime-story recording.
