On VIZIO V-Series TVs covered by the cited manual, copy the video to a FAT32-formatted USB flash drive, plug it into the TV, then select the video with the remote or choose USB from SmartCast Home. Other VIZIO models may have different file-system, format, and menu requirements, so check the manual for your exact model before troubleshooting.
Play USB video on a VIZIO V-Series TV
- Copy the video to a USB flash drive. The V-Series manual describes playback from a flash drive; it does not specify a required capacity or speed. (VIZIO V-Series User Manual)
- Format the drive as FAT32. Check the manual for your TV model to confirm its supported file extensions and other requirements; the V-Series instructions do not provide a complete codec list.
- Connect the flash drive to the TV’s USB port. Port count and placement vary by model.
- Open the video. Use the remote’s navigation keys to select it, or choose USB from the streaming icons at the bottom of SmartCast Home.
- Turn the TV off before removing the drive. The V-Series manual warns that removing it while the TV is on may damage the drive.
Why a video may not play
The file extension is not the whole format
A filename ending in MP4, AVI, or another supported extension does not guarantee playback. The container, video and audio encoding, resolution, bitrate, and other content characteristics can matter. Check the manual for your TV’s exact model rather than assuming an extension alone is enough.

Format requirements differ by model
For example, the older VIZIO XVT472SV manual specifies AVI with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio up to 1920 × 1080; MP4 with MPEG-4 ASP video and AAC audio up to 1280 × 720; MOV with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio up to 1920 × 1080; and MPG/MPEG or VOB with MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio up to 1920 × 1080. The XVT472SV manual also cautions that listed formats may still fail to play properly or completely depending on the USB device, bitrate stream, and other content characteristics. If a file is not recognized or will not play, compare the drive format and the file’s container, video and audio encoding, and resolution with the manual for your TV.

Check the device connected to USB
The cited V-Series manual says its media player is not designed for media from external hard drives, MP3 players, cameras, or smartphones. Its documented procedure is for a USB flash drive.
Find the manual for your TV
Look up the model number on the TV or its existing paperwork, then use VIZIO’s Support page to locate the matching manual. Follow that manual for the correct USB format, supported media specifications, and menu labels; the V-Series steps and the older XVT472SV limits should not be treated as universal instructions.
