To play a Hindi podcast playlist on YouTube Live from Ubuntu, install OBS Studio and VLC, add the authorized episode files to an OBS VLC Video source, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. VLC Video supports ordered, looping playlists; the regular Media Source is for an individual file. Test privately before going public, because the right settings depend on your upload connection and YouTube may interrupt a live stream that contains unlicensed third-party material.
Before you set up the stream
Confirm permission to rebroadcast the episodes
A podcast being available to listen to does not automatically grant permission to rebroadcast it live. Get permission for each episode and for any music or other third-party material it contains. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and issue a warning. Continued use may lead to interruption or termination. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Check that your channel can livestream
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If this is your first livestream activation, allow up to 24 hours before you expect to go live. Check YouTube’s livestreaming access requirements in advance.

Install OBS Studio and VLC on Ubuntu
Use the OBS Project’s current Ubuntu installation instructions and check that they apply to your Ubuntu release. The documented PPA route covers Ubuntu 18.04 or newer, but package instructions can change. Install VLC as well: OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being present. The OBS Project notes that a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.

Build a playlist scene in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the podcast stream.
- Add the playlist source: In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video. If VLC Video is missing, verify VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS explains that VLC must be installed for the source to appear in its Media Sources documentation.
- Add episode files: Add the media files you are authorized to broadcast to the VLC Video playlist, arranging them in the intended order. Test the exact files locally first. The documented playlist workflow is based on media items, not a podcast RSS feed; direct RSS playback in OBS is not established by this workflow.
- Set repeat and order: Leave shuffle off to preserve the sequence, or enable it if you want episodes in a different order. Enable loop to restart the playlist after its final item; leave it off if the stream should stop after the last item.
- Check the output: Start playback in OBS and confirm that the scene has the intended visual output and audible sound. If you only need to play one supported audio file, OBS’s regular Media Source can handle individual files; the documented multi-item playlist feature is VLC Video.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send content to your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details. Use RTMPS where available.
- Apply the settings, start streaming from OBS, and wait for the signal to appear in YouTube’s preview. Check the picture and listen to the audio before making the event public. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers connecting an encoder to Live Control Room.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
There is no single resolution or bitrate that suits every Ubuntu computer and internet connection. Choose a quality that fits your actual upload speed, test it, and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming the connection will sustain a high setting. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving roughly 20% headroom; a shared or busy connection may provide less usable upload capacity than its advertised rate. - Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends for encoder streams.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s published guidance specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Confirm the selected encoder and audio settings in your OBS build.
- Video quality: Start with a resolution and bitrate your upload can reliably maintain. A stable stream is more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.
OBS labels and setting locations can vary by version and platform. Check the current OBS interface, then use YouTube’s recommendations as the target values where the corresponding controls are available.

Run a test and monitor the live stream
- Make a private or unlisted test stream before scheduling a public broadcast.
- Use the playlist and playback conditions you expect for the real event, including audio and movement where applicable.
- Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and listen from another device. Confirm that the playlist advances, the scene is visible, and the audio is present without clipping.
- Check stream health and connection stability during the test. If it is unstable, reduce video quality or bitrate and test again.

Troubleshoot common problems
