Size a high-density AI-switch installation from the exact switch configuration’s maximum electrical input and heat output—not from a generic “high-density” label. Then match voltage, connectors, A/B-feed redundancy, airflow direction, liquid-loop design, heat rejection and service access to that documented requirement. Typical consumption is useful for operating estimates, but the maximum value is the basis for capacity, protection and cooling.

The NVIDIA CS8500 illustrates why the details matter: its documented system uses 200–240 VAC, C19 PDU connections, redundant hot-swappable power supplies and hybrid liquid-and-air cooling. Cisco’s published N9164E-NS4-O figures show how temperature, port capacity and optics can change the result. Neither product is a universal template for another switch or facility.

1. Establish the design basis before choosing equipment

A useful design basis is a written record of the exact switch, its configuration and the conditions under which the manufacturer measured power and heat. Without that record, a rack-power or cooling estimate can be wrong even when the switch model is identified correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the complete switch configuration

  • Record the model, hardware revision and installation manual used for procurement.
  • List port speed, populated line cards or modules, optics and DACs, fan or cooling options, management modules and every installed power supply.
  • State the expected port utilization and whether the switch will operate at full line rate.
  • Write down the intended ambient temperature, altitude and rack location. A maximum value measured at 40°C cannot be treated as an operating value at 25°C without preserving that qualification.
  • Note whether the manufacturer specifies one feed, dual feeds, N+N operation or another redundancy arrangement.

Configuration matters because power can vary with optics, line rate, module population and temperature. Cisco’s N9164E-NS4-O guide separates typical and maximum load and describes the configurations behind each number; it also cautions that optics and line-rate changes can alter consumption.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Separate three different numbers

Keep these values in separate fields in the design worksheet:

  • Typical draw: an operating estimate for energy, branch loading and utility planning under stated conditions.
  • Maximum input: the value used to size conductors, overcurrent protection, PDU capacity, UPS output and upstream distribution.
  • Heat output: the thermal load the room or liquid system must remove. It may be expressed as watts or a manufacturer-specific thermal rating.

Do not substitute a typical draw for the maximum provision figure. The maximum can occur at a different temperature, capacity or optical configuration than the typical test.

2. Convert switch specifications into a power architecture

Verify voltage, frequency, current and connectors

Before selecting a rack PDU or power shelf, copy the switch’s supported input voltage, frequency, maximum current per source and connector type into the electrical design. The NVIDIA CS8500 manual specifies 200–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, a maximum 16 A per AC source and PDU connections using C19 sockets. Those requirements apply to the CS8500 configuration documented by NVIDIA; they are not a default requirement for every AI switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A procurement specification should therefore name the required voltage range, frequency, receptacle or inlet, continuous-current allowance, breaker arrangement and cable length. A PDU with C19 sockets is appropriate only when those characteristics match the switch inlet, the PDU rating and the site’s electrical code and distribution system.

Choose a failure model explicitly

Decide what must remain online after a branch circuit, PDU, power shelf or switch power supply fails. Common models include:

  • Independent A/B feeds: each feed comes from a separate power path, allowing the switch to continue operating after one path is lost when the hardware supports that behavior.
  • Redundant power supplies: multiple hot-swappable supplies share or back up the load according to the manufacturer’s documented operating mode.
  • N+N distribution: two complete power grids are sized so either grid can carry the protected load. The CS8500 manual specifies 220 V for its N+N configuration.

Do not infer failover behavior from the number of sockets alone. Confirm the manufacturer’s instructions for which supplies must connect to which feeds, the load-sharing mode, alarm behavior and the permitted state during a feed or supply failure. Have the electrical engineer verify that breakers, UPS modules, generators, busways and PDUs preserve the intended redundancy end to end.

Use maximum values for capacity calculations

For each switch, calculate the protected design load from the documented maximum input. Sum the maximums for all switches, CDUs, pumps, heat exchangers, management appliances and other rack equipment on the same power path. Apply the site’s electrical code, continuous-load rules, UPS operating limits and a separately documented growth allowance; do not hide those allowances inside a switch’s typical-watt figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple planning worksheet can contain:

Field What to enter
Switch maximum input Manufacturer’s maximum for the exact configuration and stated conditions
Typical operating draw Manufacturer’s typical value, with temperature, capacity and optics noted
Input voltage and frequency Supported range and site supply
Maximum current per source Manufacturer’s value for each AC or DC input
Connector and PDU outlet Required inlet and matching rack distribution outlet
Feed topology A/B, N+N or another documented arrangement
Failure requirement Equipment that must remain powered after a specified fault

3. Understand the thermal architecture before selecting cooling

High-density switching can use enhanced air cooling, a hybrid liquid-and-air design or direct liquid cooling. The right choice depends on the switch’s maximum heat, the facility’s ability to provide and reject heat, and the service model—not on a rack-density number taken from another vendor’s product page.

Planning axis Enhanced air Hybrid liquid and air Direct liquid
Heat capture Air removes heat from the complete chassis Liquid captures the primary heat source while air cools remaining components Liquid is routed to heat-generating devices such as ASICs or line cards
Facility dependency Room airflow, containment and computer-room cooling capacity Air path plus a CDU or heat exchanger and compatible facility water CDU, secondary loop, distribution hardware, monitoring and validated switch interfaces
Airflow question Entire chassis direction must match the cold and hot aisles Direction still matters for air-cooled power and management parts Residual air load and component-specific airflow still need confirmation
Procurement risk Room cooling may be the limiting resource Both air and liquid systems must be commissioned Technology availability, water quality and service procedures must be proven for the exact product

Enhanced-air cooling

An air-cooled design requires enough supply-air volume and temperature margin at the switch inlet, unobstructed exhaust to the hot aisle and sufficient room-level heat rejection. Validate the chassis fan direction, allowable inlet temperature, blanking requirements and the effect of neighboring racks. A room that can remove average rack heat may still fail when several switches reach their maximum thermal load simultaneously.

Hybrid cooling: the CS8500 example

NVIDIA’s CS8500 system manual states that liquid removes 90% of the heat and air removes 10%. The split is specific to that hybrid design. Its management modules and power supplies remain air cooled, so a liquid connection does not eliminate the need for a correctly designed aisle airflow path.

The documented CS8500 airflow runs from the spine side at the cold aisle toward the leaf side at the hot aisle. Preserve the upper air panel and install blanks in unused module slots so air does not bypass the intended path. A rack plan that reverses the chassis orientation, leaves module openings exposed or blocks the upper panel can overheat air-cooled parts even while the liquid circuit is operating normally.

Direct-to-chip cooling and product availability

Cisco describes direct-to-chip liquid cooling for next-generation switches as a development roadmap and explicitly states that the liquid-cooled switches described there are not yet commercially available. Its projected benefits, including an energy-savings goal of up to 30% to 50% for anticipated future deployments, are goals rather than independently verified savings for an installed switch. Do not design a procurement around a roadmap feature until a commercially available model has an installation manual, supported coolant interface and validated service procedure.

4. Design the CDU and liquid loops as a boundary

When a switch uses liquid, the coolant distribution unit (CDU) separates the facility-side loop from the equipment-side loop. NVIDIA’s CS8500 documentation states: “The water in the primary and secondary loops are not mixed within the CDU.” The separation allows the facility loop and the secondary equipment loop to have different water chemistry, pressure and operational controls.

Primary facility loop

Document the available supply and return temperature, flow, pressure, water chemistry, filtration, isolation valves and heat-rejection equipment on the facility side. Confirm whether the site provides the required water continuously and whether maintenance can isolate a CDU without taking other racks offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secondary equipment loop

Use the switch and CDU manual to specify coolant quality, material compatibility, corrosion control, pressure limits and required flow. The secondary loop can have stricter quality requirements than the facility loop. Check hose and fitting materials, quick-disconnect procedures, leak detection, drain and fill access, expansion volume and the monitoring points exposed to the management system.

Instrumentation and serviceability

  • Measure supply and return temperature, differential pressure, flow and leak status at the CDU.
  • Alarm on loss of flow, high temperature, pressure outside limits and water detection before switch protection trips.
  • Provide isolation and service clearances for pumps, filters, valves, hoses and the switch’s liquid cold plates.
  • Define whether a CDU failure causes a controlled switch shutdown, a thermal-throttling event or continued operation on residual air cooling. Use the product manual rather than assuming one behavior.

5. Match heat rejection to the facility

The heat-capture method inside the rack is only half of the design. The facility must reject the captured heat under the site’s worst credible conditions.

Water-to-water CDU

The CS8500 manual describes a water-to-water CDU when facility water is available. In this arrangement, the CDU transfers heat from the equipment-side loop to the building-side loop. Verify building-water temperature, pressure, flow, water treatment and redundancy before selecting this path.

Water-to-air heat exchanger

Where facility water is not available, the CS8500 documentation describes a water-to-air heat exchanger. This preserves a liquid loop at the rack while rejecting heat into the room or a conditioned air path. The room cooling system must then be sized for the heat exchanger’s output as well as the switch’s residual air load and all other rack equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpreting vendor capacity figures

Vendor capacity numbers demonstrate what a particular product can support; they are not universal thresholds:

Published figure How to use it
Up to 160 kW CDU cooling capacity Vendor-reported capacity for a rack-mount CDU; confirm operating conditions and compatibility with the chosen switch
Up to 250 kW in-rack CDU capacity Capacity stated for a particular integrated infrastructure portfolio; not a target for an unverified rack
33 kW power shelves Vendor-stated product capability; electrical coordination and switch compatibility remain separate checks
Up to 227 kW per rack Figure for a Schneider Electric reference design co-developed with NVIDIA for a specific system; not a general switch-rack limit

These figures should be compared only after the switch heat load, coolant temperatures, flow, altitude and redundancy assumptions are aligned. A CDU rated for a high capacity does not make a rack safe if the facility cannot supply the required water or power.

6. Lay out racks, aisles and service clearances

Orient the chassis correctly

Map the manufacturer’s intake and exhaust sides to the site’s cold and hot aisles. For the CS8500, the spine side belongs toward the cold aisle and the leaf side toward the hot aisle. Verify the orientation for every other model; “front” and “rear” labels are not interchangeable across networking platforms.

Reserve space for cooling infrastructure

Include the CDU, pumps, hose bend radius, valves, filters, leak sensors and cable paths in the rack elevation. The CS8500’s separate 4U in-rack CDU consumes rack units that cannot be allocated to switches or patch panels. Provide access to the upper air panel, module blanks, power supplies and liquid connections without removing neighboring equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan telemetry and controls

Connect switch health data, PDU measurements, CDU temperatures and flow alarms to the facility monitoring system. Correlate a rising switch inlet temperature with CDU flow, room temperature and branch current so operators can distinguish an airflow blockage from a hydraulic or electrical fault.

7. Calculate a rack and row load without false precision

Use the manufacturer’s maximum per-switch value as the starting point, then add the documented loads of the CDU, pumps, heat exchanger, management equipment and other devices. Keep typical operating estimates in a separate energy model.

For example, Cisco lists 1,455 W typical and 2,209 W maximum for the N9164E-NS4-O. Cisco’s typical configuration is measured at 50% capacity and 25°C; its maximum configuration is at 100% capacity and 40°C, using the same described DAC/optics mix. A rack containing four such switches would have a switch-only maximum of 8,836 W (4 × 2,209 W) before PDUs, cooling equipment and other loads are added. That arithmetic is a planning illustration, not a recommendation for four switches in one rack.

The same discipline applies to the CS8500: use its exact maximum input and thermal figures from the applicable manual, then add the in-rack CDU and any pumps or heat exchangers. Do not replace missing product values with a generic watts-per-rack assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Validate the design before procurement

  1. Freeze the bill of materials. List switch models, revisions, modules, optics, DACs, power supplies, CDUs, hoses and heat exchangers.
  2. Collect current manuals. Use the installation and system manuals for the exact configuration and record document revision dates.
  3. Build the electrical schedule. Enter maximum input, voltage, frequency, current, connector, breaker, PDU and UPS path for every device.
  4. Model failure states. Simulate loss of one AC feed, one PDU, one power supply, one UPS module and one CDU pump. Confirm the remaining path stays within its current and thermal limits.
  5. Model thermal worst cases. Use maximum switch heat, maximum room or facility temperature, reduced airflow, expected water temperature and the required redundancy state.
  6. Review liquid compatibility. Approve coolant chemistry, materials, pressure, flow, filtration, leak detection and service procedures with the switch and CDU vendors.
  7. Check physical access. Verify rack units, cable bend radius, hose routing, aisle clearances, blanking panels, lifting equipment and replacement paths.
  8. Commission in stages. Test sensors and alarms, then one rack, then a row or pod. Record inlet and exhaust temperatures, supply and return temperatures, flow, pressure and branch current under controlled load.
  9. Obtain engineering sign-off. Have the switch vendor and the site’s electrical, mechanical and facilities engineers approve the final configuration before procurement and installation.

9. Common planning failures and their fixes

Failure Why it happens Correction
Using typical watts to size breakers or cooling Typical values look more representative of daily operation Provision from the documented maximum; retain typical values only for operating and energy estimates
Assuming every port configuration has the same draw Model names conceal optics, line-rate and module differences Record the populated configuration and use the manufacturer’s matching maximum
Treating liquid cooling as air-free ASIC or line-card liquid cooling is mistaken for whole-chassis cooling Identify residual air-cooled components and preserve the specified airflow path
Connecting both liquid loops together Facility water and equipment coolant are treated as interchangeable Use the CDU boundary; keep primary and secondary loops separate and meet each loop’s requirements
Buying a high-capacity CDU without checking the building Vendor capacity is mistaken for available facility capacity Match flow, pressure, temperature, chemistry, heat rejection and redundancy to the site
Reversing the rack orientation Switch airflow labels are not mapped to aisle names Place intake toward the cold aisle and exhaust toward the hot aisle according to the manual
Designing around a roadmap switch Future direct-to-chip claims are treated as current products Procure only a commercially available model with validated interfaces and support
Leaving no service path Rack density is optimized without considering hoses, filters or power supplies Reserve rack units, clearance, isolation valves and replacement access in the elevation

10. Use vendor examples as boundaries, not universal targets

Several current infrastructure portfolios show how quickly the design space is expanding. Supermicro describes in-rack CDUs up to 250 kW, 33 kW power shelves, battery backup units, hose kits, networking switches and in-row cooling. Dell describes enhanced-air, hybrid and direct-liquid-cooled rack approaches and a rack-mount CDU. Schneider Electric describes an integrated heat-capture-to-heat-rejection architecture and a 227 kW-per-rack reference design for a specific NVIDIA system. These statements establish available product categories and vendor-positioned capabilities; they do not establish a safe density, voltage or cooling requirement for an arbitrary AI switch.

The NVIDIA CS8500 documentation is more useful as an equipment-specific example because it supplies concrete electrical, airflow and liquid-loop requirements. Even there, the manual’s values apply to the documented CS8500 system and its stated configuration. A different switch may require a different voltage, connector, airflow direction, coolant, CDU arrangement or failure response.

11. Procurement checklist

  • Exact switch model, revision and configuration are frozen.
  • Maximum input and heat output are recorded with measurement conditions.
  • Typical draw is recorded separately and not used as the protection limit.
  • Voltage, frequency, current per source and connector type match the site.
  • PDU outlets, breakers, UPS modules and generators support the selected feed topology.
  • A/B or N+N behavior is documented for a feed, PSU and upstream-device failure.
  • Cold-aisle and hot-aisle orientation matches the switch airflow.
  • Residual air-cooled components, blanks and panels are included.
  • CDU capacity, flow, pressure, temperature, water quality and materials are approved.
  • Primary and secondary loops remain separated where the design requires it.
  • Heat rejection works with the site’s actual water or air capability.
  • Rack units, service clearances, hoses, cables, sensors and leak controls are shown on the elevation.
  • Switch, CDU, electrical and facilities engineers have reviewed the complete design.

Conclusion

A defensible high-density AI-switch design is a chain of matched specifications: maximum electrical load to distribution, redundancy to failure requirements, heat output to capture and rejection, airflow to aisle orientation, and liquid chemistry and pressure to the CDU and facility loop. Start with the exact product manual, preserve every stated condition, and treat vendor capacity and roadmap claims as product-specific context rather than generic design limits.
