Plan the leave as a small, flexible window rather than betting everything on launch day: check your workplace rules and deadlines, request dates early, confirm the release through the official publisher or platform, and leave a documented handover with an agreed cover person. Because no game, platform, country, or region is specified here, the exact date and legal notice period must be checked for your situation.
Start with the constraints you can actually control
A game launch is only one input into a leave decision. Before choosing dates, establish four facts: how much leave you can use, which days your employer will approve, what work must continue while you are away, and how reliable the announced launch date is.

Check your leave balance and leave year
Open the system your employer uses to record time off and confirm your remaining entitlement, the dates of the current leave year, and whether unused days can be carried forward. Check whether public holidays, company shutdowns, or already-approved absences affect the balance. A launch-day plan can fail if the requested days cross into a new leave year or exceed the balance available on the first day of absence.
Read the documents that govern requests
Use your employment contract, staff handbook, collective or registered agreement, and the actual request form or calendar workflow. Look for the required notice, approval authority, blackout periods, minimum or maximum blocks, rules for changing approved dates, and any requirement to nominate cover. Do not treat a general internet rule as a substitute for the document that applies to your job.

Official guidance illustrates why the answer depends on location and workplace documents:
| Location | What the cited guidance says | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Acas says, “Workers should ask for their holiday dates as far in advance as possible.” It describes a default notice rule of at least twice the number of days requested, unless a relevant agreement provides a different rule. | Check the contract or workplace agreement before relying on the default. A five-day request may require at least ten days’ notice under that default, but your agreement can change the process. |
| Australia | The Fair Work Ombudsman says the request process is often in an award, registered agreement, company policy, or employment contract. Under the described framework, an employer may refuse a request only if the refusal is reasonable. | Follow the applicable award, agreement, policy, or contract and submit the request before booking plans. |
| New Zealand | Employment New Zealand describes leave timing as an agreement between worker and employer and says an employer cannot unreasonably refuse entitled leave. The page notes a Holidays Act change scheduled for August 2028. | Check the current rule when you apply, especially for leave on or after the scheduled change. |
These examples are not a universal legal rule or individualized legal advice. If you work elsewhere, use the official labour authority for that jurisdiction and your employer’s own documents.
Map work that cannot simply wait
Review the calendar for delivery dates, customer commitments, on-call rotations, payroll or reporting cutoffs, meetings where you are the decision-maker, and work that only you can access. Include the day before and after your proposed leave: a launch weekend is not useful if you return to an avoidable emergency or leave a deadline uncovered.

Build a leave window that can survive a date change
Once you know the constraints, choose the smallest block that gives you meaningful time to play without creating a fragile dependency on one announced date. Mark “essential” days—days you genuinely want off—and “adjustable” days that can move if the release moves.
| Scheduling approach | Leave used | Advantages | Risks to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch-day leave | Usually one working day | Uses little entitlement and is simple to explain. | It has the least tolerance for a delay, a midnight release in another time zone, server queues, or a launch-day patch. |
| Short block around launch | For example, the launch day plus adjacent working days | Provides a useful uninterrupted period and absorbs a small amount of launch friction. | Uses more leave and may collide with a deadline or a team’s minimum staffing rule. |
| Flexible window | A modest block with one or more days identified as movable | Lets your manager plan cover while preserving an agreed adjustment if the date changes. | Only works if the employer approves the adjustment process; unilaterally moving dates can create an unapproved absence. |
| Post-launch leave | Days after the announced release | Reduces exposure to a delay and may avoid launch-day operational problems. | You may miss the first days you wanted, and the game could still be delayed beyond the chosen window. |
Compare each option against five questions: how many days it consumes, how far the date can move before the plan fails, how likely approval is under your policy, whether it overlaps a critical commitment, and whether another person can make decisions during your absence. There is no configuration that is best for every team.
Verify the release date before you commit money or leave
Use the publisher’s or platform’s official announcement for the exact title, edition, platform, and region. The information here does not identify a game or provide a live launch date, so a specific recommendation cannot be made from the title alone. Store listings, social posts, and countdowns can display different time zones or change before launch; treat the official announcement as the reference and record the time zone shown.

Allow for real release-date uncertainty
Announced dates are plans, not guarantees. A study by Balreet Grewal, Dayi Lin, Lars Doucet, and Cor-Paul Bezemer, published on 24 April 2022, analyzed release-date histories for 23,485 Steam games. Among the games in that dataset that had concrete release dates, 48% delayed their initial release; for delayed games, the median delay was 14 days. See the paper at An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam.

Those figures describe that Steam dataset and its historical study period. They are not a probability for a particular upcoming title, platform, publisher, or region. Use them to justify flexibility, not to calculate a personal forecast.
Use a two-check calendar
- At announcement: save the official date, time zone, platform, and edition in your personal planning note. Identify essential and adjustable leave days.
- Before approval: check whether the date conflicts with known work deadlines and submit the request through the required channel.
- One to two weeks before launch: revisit the official announcement and your employer’s calendar. Confirm that the date, edition, and region still match your plan.
- Near launch: check once more at a sensible point defined by your team—such as the preceding working day—without turning approved leave into an obligation to monitor work.
If the publisher has not announced a firm date, request only what your policy allows you to change, or wait until there is enough certainty to make a responsible request. Do not present a rumor as a fixed commitment to your manager.

Submit the request so approval is unambiguous
- Choose exact working days. State the first and last day you will be unavailable, including whether a public holiday or a non-working day is involved.
- State what is fixed and what is flexible. Explain which day is essential and which dates could move if the release changes. Offer a range only if your employer’s process accepts ranges; otherwise submit exact dates and describe the agreed change process separately.
- Identify coverage before asking for approval. Name the colleague or role who can handle urgent decisions, subject to that person’s agreement and your manager’s approval.
- List nearby commitments. Mention deadlines before your leave, during your absence, and immediately after you return, with a short plan for each.
- Use the official channel. Enter the request in the HR or scheduling system, or send it to the designated approver. A chat message can be useful context but should not replace the recorded request if policy requires one.
- Wait for confirmation. Do not book non-refundable travel or treat the days as approved until the employer confirms them. Keep the approval record and the final dates.
A concise request can be factual rather than defensive: “I am requesting annual leave from [date] to [date]. The dates are around a game release; [date] is essential and [date] is flexible if the launch moves. I will finish [deliverables], and [role or colleague] has agreed to cover urgent decisions, subject to your approval. I will provide the handover by [date].” Keep the fill-in variables inside the message you send, not in a policy document that could be misunderstood.
Make the handover easy to use, not merely complete
A coverage plan protects colleagues from having to reconstruct your work while you are offline. It is a practical continuity measure, not a statutory checklist asserted by the cited leave guidance.
Inventory the work
- Finish: items that can be completed before the first leave day without rushing or creating new risk.
- Reschedule: work whose due date can move with the stakeholder’s agreement.
- Delegate: work another person can perform with a clear brief and the necessary access.
- Escalate: decisions that need a manager or specialist before you leave.
- Pause: low-priority tasks that can safely wait until your return.
Give the cover person decision-ready information
For each item that could arise during the absence, provide the current status, the next action, the deadline and time zone, the location of the authoritative file or ticket, the people involved, the decision boundary, and the condition that requires escalation. Link to normal workplace systems rather than copying sensitive data into an informal document.

Test the handover
Ask the cover person to read the notes and tell you what they would do first. Resolve missing permissions, ambiguous ownership, and hidden dependencies before your last working day. If the work involves confidential information, use the organization’s approved access and sharing method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tell the people who depend on your work
After approval, notify the immediate team and any stakeholders whose work depends on your response. Include the dates you will be unavailable, the return date, the cover route for genuinely urgent issues, and deadlines that have been moved or reassigned. Keep the message consistent with the approved plan; do not invite routine requests to a personal account.
Set an out-of-office message
Use the company’s normal out-of-office tool. State the absence dates, the return date, the team or role to contact for urgent matters, and the expected response timing after you return. Do not promise that you will read messages while on leave unless that arrangement is explicitly agreed and fits workplace expectations.

What to do when the release date moves
Handle a delay as a change to an approved workplace arrangement, not as an automatic transfer of leave. The correct action depends on your policy and the approver.
- Confirm the change. Check the publisher or platform’s official announcement and note the new date, time zone, and affected edition.
- Compare the new date with your approved leave. Decide whether the existing days still meet your purpose or whether another window is preferable.
- Ask the approver before changing anything. Request a cancellation, amendment, or new dates through the same channel used for the original approval. Explain the coverage impact and retain written confirmation.
- Keep the original plan if it remains useful. You may prefer to keep the leave for rest even if the game moves. That is a personal choice, but the days should remain a genuine approved absence rather than an informal work-from-home arrangement.
- Update the handover and messages. Tell the cover person and affected stakeholders which dates are final, and replace outdated out-of-office text.
If a release is brought forward, do not assume you can start leave early. Ask for approval, check your balance, and make sure the revised dates do not leave a deadline uncovered.
A practical planning timeline
Four or more weeks before the expected launch
- Check balance, leave-year limits, notice rules, blackout periods, and the approval route.
- Review work deadlines and identify a provisional cover person.
- Record the official announced date and its time zone, while marking the plan as subject to change.
- Choose a primary window and a fallback window.
Two to four weeks before launch
- Submit exact dates with essential and adjustable days clearly identified.
- Discuss conflicts with your manager before they become a last-minute rejection.
- Start the handover inventory and ask the cover person what information they need.
One week before launch
- Recheck the official release announcement and your team calendar.
- Finish, delegate, reschedule, or escalate listed work.
- Send stakeholder notices, complete the handover review, and set the out-of-office message for the approved dates.
During leave
- Keep the boundary that was agreed. Route only the urgent issues covered by the team’s normal process.
- Do not silently monitor work or make decisions through personal channels if the plan says you are unavailable.
On return
- Read the handover and prioritize items by deadline and impact rather than trying to answer everything at once.
- Confirm with the cover person that urgent matters are closed or transferred back.
- Update any recurring calendar entries or leave records if the approved dates changed.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure | Why it causes disruption | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Requesting only the rumored launch day | A rumor, time-zone mismatch, or delay leaves the leave disconnected from the actual release. | Use the official announcement, mark essential and adjustable days, and keep a fallback window. |
| Assuming a manager’s verbal “yes” is recorded approval | The HR calendar or staffing plan may still show you as available. | Complete the required system or written process and retain confirmation. |
| Booking before approval | A refused or changed request can create financial loss and pressure to take unauthorized absence. | Wait for approval unless your employer explicitly authorizes another process. |
| Leaving a list of tasks with no owner | Colleagues cannot tell what is urgent or who may decide. | Assign an owner, deadline, source of truth, escalation condition, and decision boundary for each live item. |
| Promising constant availability | The leave becomes nominal while colleagues continue routing work to you. | Set an out-of-office route and agree in advance what, if anything, counts as an urgent exception. |
| Changing dates without approval | The revised absence may breach scheduling rules even if the original leave was approved. | Ask for an amendment or new request before acting on the new dates. |
Final checklist before you submit
- Have I checked my balance, leave year, notice period, blackout dates, and approval channel?
- Have I read the contract, policy, award, agreement, or collective arrangement that applies to me?
- Have I verified the game’s official date, platform, edition, region, and time zone?
- Have I identified a fallback if the date moves?
- Have I checked deadlines immediately before, during, and after the absence?
- Is every live task finished, rescheduled, delegated, escalated, or explicitly paused?
- Has a willing cover person been identified and given decision-ready notes?
- Have stakeholders been told the approved absence dates and urgent route?
- Have I received recorded approval before treating the leave as final?
The sensible outcome
The goal is not to guarantee a perfect launch weekend. It is to make the leave resilient: request early, preserve room for a date change, verify the announcement again, and leave colleagues a clear way to keep essential work moving. Once the dates are approved and coverage is understood, keep the absence genuinely clear so the time off serves its purpose.
