The most reliable way to command a front in Battleplan is to combine broad Zone Orders with occasional direct orders to individual units. Use a Regimental Plan to divide an area among available regiments, inspect each zone’s predicted attack and defence, select a tactic that matches your risk tolerance, and resize or reinforce zones as the battle develops. For an assault, use Breakthrough Attack followed by Assemble when resistance is light and time is short; use Complex Attack when preparation, artillery, scouting and a reserve are worth the extra time. On defence, prepare positions before the mission starts and keep mobile reserves behind a thinner infantry line.
This guide follows the control options and procedures described in the official Battleplan material available around the October 2026 launch. Interface labels and behaviour can change in later builds, but the command logic remains the same: plan at formation scale, verify local conditions, then intervene only where the situation needs finer control.

Understand the two levels of control
Battleplan supports two useful command scales. Zone Orders assign areas, objectives and tactics across several formations at once. Individual-unit orders let you correct one battalion, regiment or other unit when the broad plan is not enough. Zone Orders are optional; they sit alongside the game’s Timeline orders rather than replacing them.

| Zone Orders | Coordinating a whole front or several adjacent sectors | Area boundaries, assigned formations and zone tactic | A zone can become too large or understrength as the battle changes |

| Direct unit orders | Fine corrections, emergency responses and special tasks | A specific unit’s movement, attack, reserve or other action | Too many individual orders become difficult to monitor |
A practical hierarchy is to draw the front with Zone Orders, use the zone information panel to check whether the allocation is sensible, and then issue direct orders only for exceptions: a regiment that must hold a road, a reserve moving toward a breach, or a unit that needs to stop before it overextends.

Read the mission before drawing the front
Open the mission briefing and identify the time available, the ground that must be captured or held, and the likely strength of the opposing line. The offensive diary specifically puts remaining mission time first. A plan that would be excellent with an hour left may be unusable when the clock permits only a short attack.
- Short time and light resistance: favour the quick Breakthrough Attack and Assemble sequence.
- More time or a strong defence: plan a Complex Attack so preparation and follow-up actions are explicit.
- Defence mission: place units during deployment so they receive fortifications when the mission begins, then keep a mobile response force available.
Check the condition of the division you intend to use. The developer guidance recommends a fresh attacking division with limited casualties and, ideally, artillery, scouts and engineers. Artillery supports barrages, scouts provide reconnaissance, and engineers help with fortifications and minefields. If one division cannot provide enough regiments for the task, combining divisions into a corps can supply the additional formations needed for a more complex attack.
Build a Zone Order with a Regimental Plan
1. Draw the area of operation
Zone Orders start with a Regimental Plan, the default zone plan. Draw the area of operation along the portion of the front you want to control. The game divides that area into zones according to the regiments available. Treat the automatic division as a starting layout, not as a conclusion about where every regiment belongs.

This is a useful organizing pattern: fighting formations cover the sectors, while command and support assets are not needlessly exposed. It is not a universal requirement; the right allocation depends on the mission, terrain and enemy concentration.
2. Inspect every zone before committing
Hover over a zone to open its information panel. The panel gives two prediction bars:

- The upper blue/red bar estimates the attack outcome for the forces assigned to that zone.
- The lower bar estimates the defence outcome using those allocations and the local enemy strength.
The same panel lists participating divisions, soldier totals, elevation changes and difficult terrain. Use those figures to find mismatches before execution. A sector with a small attacking force, a large elevation change and difficult ground may need a smaller objective or additional units. A favourable bar is not a guarantee: predictions are decision aids based on the current allocation and local strength, not promises about the final result.
3. Change assignments by dragging formations
The documented interface method is to left-click and drag battalions into the zone panel. Move units between zones until each sector has a defensible amount of ground and enough strength for its intended task. Recheck the prediction bars after every major change; moving one battalion can weaken the neighbouring zone even when the destination improves.

4. Select the zone tactic
Use the zone’s Tactic button to choose how it behaves once execution begins. The two documented choices have different risk profiles.
| Tactic | Behaviour | Choose it when | Avoid treating it as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seize Ground | Pushes aggressively to capture enemy territory, even when the force is outnumbered or overextended | The sector must take ground quickly and you accept a higher chance of exposure | A safe default; it can outrun support and create an exposed salient |
| Balanced Hold | Advances only when flanks are secure and the force is not outnumbered | You want controlled progress and a line that remains supportable | A guarantee that the unit will never move or lose ground |
Choose the tactic per sector rather than applying one policy to the entire front. An objective zone may use Seize Ground while an adjacent flank uses Balanced Hold to prevent the attack from opening a gap.
5. Resize zones during execution
You can reshape a zone while the plan is running. Hover over a zone edge and hold the right mouse button to move that boundary. The official diary describes using this to prevent overextension or to capture additional required ground. If a zone has advanced beyond the support of its neighbours, make it smaller. If the mission objective still lies outside the assigned area and the force can cover it, expand the zone carefully and then review the predictions again.

Choose between broad planning and direct intervention
Zone Orders reduce repetitive unit-by-unit management, but they do not remove the need to watch the battle. Direct intervention is appropriate when one formation’s situation differs from the assumptions used to draw the zones.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a direct order when a reserve must move toward a newly opened breach.
- Use a direct order when one regiment must stop on a defensible feature while the rest of its zone continues forward.
- Use Zone Orders when several formations need the same objective, boundary or risk posture.
- Use Timeline orders when the important decision is sequence and timing rather than area allocation.
If you find yourself issuing many small corrections, pause and redraw the affected zone instead. Repeated individual orders can hide the fact that the original area is too large, the force allocation is wrong, or the tactic no longer matches the mission.
Plan a fast offensive with Breakthrough Attack and Assemble
When the quick sequence fits
For a lightly defended frontline with little mission time remaining, the offence diary recommends a Breakthrough Attack followed by Assemble. The breakthrough uses a formation and route to penetrate the line. It does not stop to hold every piece of captured ground or to clear every enemy unit behind the line. Assemble then breaks the formation and moves rapidly to its destination.
This sequence trades consolidation for speed. It is suitable when the objective is movement through a weak screen or when reaching a distant point matters more than establishing a stable perimeter immediately.
Know the hard limits
Breakthrough Attack plus Assemble is not a method for heavy fortifications or dense cities. The diary warns that the quick approach will not break those defences reliably. If the first line is strongly prepared, replace the quick sequence with a Complex Attack instead of repeatedly sending the same formation into an obstacle it was not designed to overcome.

Use Complex Attack for prepared or stubborn defence
Complex Attack generates a longer, editable plan. It is the better fit when you can spend time preparing the attack, when the defender has fortifications, or when the objective requires both capture and consolidation.
The generated sequence
- Assemble near the front without engaging. Bring the attacking formations close enough to begin the operation while avoiding an early fight that disrupts the planned concentration.
- Run preparatory artillery and scouting simultaneously. Artillery damages defenders and can reduce fortifications and morale. Scouting temporarily reveals enemy positions and applies a debuff. More artillery activity consumes more ammunition, so the preparation phase has a real resource and time cost.
- Launch one or more Breakthrough Attacks. Use the prepared force to open routes through the weakened line. Multiple breakthroughs can prevent one narrow penetration from becoming the sole point of failure.
- Keep a regiment in reserve. The reserve assists units that run into trouble instead of committing every regiment at the first contact.
- Split forces to seize and hold the remaining ground. After the breakthrough, Seize Ground actions capture the area that remains outside the initial penetration and establish a defensive perimeter.
Set the target area sensibly
The developer diary suggests drawing the target area from the frontline inward by roughly 5–15 km, depending on relative force strength. That distance is a recommendation from the diary, not a universal rule. Use the smaller end when the attacking force is weak or the terrain is difficult; use a deeper area only when the assigned divisions can sustain the advance and still hold what they take.
Edit the generated plan
Complex Attack is a starting plan, not a locked script. Its generated steps can be edited, deleted or customized. Remove a preparation step if the clock cannot support it, change a breakthrough route that crosses an unsuitable sector, or retain a larger reserve when the defender’s strength is uncertain. Editing is particularly valuable after you inspect the zone panel and discover that the automatic area or force allocation does not match the actual mission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare a layered defence
Deploy before the mission begins
Place defensive units during deployment. Units gain fortifications when the mission starts, so waiting until combat is underway forfeits part of the advantage of prepared ground. Put the units that must hold the line on terrain where their defensive bonuses matter, and avoid spreading the entire force so thinly that no sector can resist a concentrated attack.
Use terrain for a purpose
| Terrain described in the developer guide | Defensive effect | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Towns and forests | Improve defence and firepower while slowing movement | Good places for a holding line when you can accept slower movement |
| Swamps and wetlands | Reduce defence, firepower, movement speed and morale | Avoid relying on them as the main position unless the mission leaves no alternative |
| Beaches | Reduce defence, firepower, movement speed and morale | Do not assume shoreline terrain is protective simply because it constrains movement |
Keep a mobile reserve behind the line
The recommended defensive pattern is a thin infantry line backed by armour reserves several kilometres behind it. The infantry discourages cautious advances and benefits from fortifications; armour and mechanized infantry can move quickly to plug a gap. Give the reserve a Reserves or Counterattack order, and position it near supply depots and roads leading to objectives that must be held.
Best Value
Complex Defence can assign several regiments to the frontline and one regiment to reserve. That arrangement is a framework rather than a mandatory ratio. Increase the reserve when the enemy has several possible attack routes; strengthen the line when losing a particular sector would immediately expose the objective.
Respond to changing conditions
The attack prediction is weak
First reduce the amount of ground assigned to the zone, then consider moving additional battalions into it. Check elevation change and difficult terrain before committing more troops; a larger force may still struggle if the route itself is unsuitable. If the weak prediction reflects a heavy fortification, switch from a quick breakthrough to a prepared Complex Attack.
A successful advance is becoming overextended
Resize the zone by holding the right mouse button over its edge and pulling the boundary back toward the supported line. Change the tactic of the exposed sector to Balanced Hold if its flanks are not secure. Keep a reserve available rather than sending every formation forward to repair the gap.
The defender has a sudden breach in your line
Use a direct order on the nearest reserve instead of redesigning the whole front. Move armour or mechanized infantry along a road toward the threatened objective, while the infantry line holds as much prepared terrain as possible. Once the breach is contained, redraw the affected zone if its original boundary no longer reflects the front.
The clock is running out
Do not begin a full Complex Attack when there is not enough time for assembly, preparation, breakthroughs and consolidation. Use the fastest viable route toward the objective, accepting that a Breakthrough Attack will not automatically hold or clear all ground behind the penetration. A smaller, supportable objective is preferable to a deep advance that cannot be assembled before the mission ends.
Artillery ammunition is becoming scarce
Reduce or shorten the preparatory barrage rather than exhausting ammunition before the breakthrough. Scouting can still provide temporary visibility and a debuff, but it does not replace the damage and fortification reduction supplied by artillery. Allocate preparation where it changes the local odds most.
A repeatable front-planning workflow
- Read the mission briefing and note the time limit and mandatory objectives.
- Choose the control scale: Zone Orders for the front, direct orders for exceptions, and Timeline orders when sequence is the main concern.
- Draw a Regimental Plan over the relevant area and inspect each zone’s attack and defence predictions.
- Review participating divisions, soldier totals, elevation and difficult terrain before accepting the automatic division.
- Drag battalions into the zone panel until each sector has a realistic amount of ground and sufficient strength.
- Set Seize Ground for sectors that must push and Balanced Hold for sectors that must protect their flanks and line.
- Select Breakthrough Attack plus Assemble for a lightly defended line when time is short; select Complex Attack when preparation and consolidation justify the delay.
- For Complex Attack, preserve a reserve, edit generated steps and set the target depth according to actual force strength rather than treating 5–15 km as a fixed rule.
- On defence, deploy before the mission, use towns and forests where appropriate, and keep mobile reserves behind the infantry line near useful roads and supply depots.
- During execution, watch the predictions and the real front. Resize zones with right-click dragging and issue direct orders only where the broad plan no longer fits.
Common planning mistakes
- Using Seize Ground everywhere: aggressive movement can leave flanks unsecured and formations overextended.
- Assuming prediction bars are guarantees: they summarize current allocations and local strength; they do not remove uncertainty.
- Sending a quick breakthrough into a city or heavy fortification: the fast sequence is not designed to stop, clear and hold such positions.
- Committing every regiment at the first contact: without a reserve, a local setback can become a front-wide collapse.
- Waiting to fortify: defensive preparation happens during deployment, not after the mission has already started.
- Making zones too ambitious: an objective that exceeds the force’s ability to cover it is a liability even when the first advance succeeds.
- Ignoring poor terrain: swamps, wetlands and beaches reduce several combat and movement attributes, so they should not be treated as neutral ground.
The practical command principle
Start broad, verify locally, and intervene selectively. A Regimental Plan gives the front a coherent shape; the zone panel tells you whether the assigned forces and ground are plausible; the tactic determines how much risk each sector accepts. Breakthrough Attack and Assemble buy speed against a weak line, while Complex Attack spends time and ammunition to make a stronger defence manageable. On the other side of the line, prepared infantry holds terrain and mobile reserves restore the front when an attack finds a gap. The best plan is therefore not the most aggressive or the most detailed one, but the one whose area, timing, reserves and tactic still match the battlefield you actually have.
