Etosha Pan is the centre of Etosha National Park, where wildlife gathers around waterholes and roads cross a vast northern landscape. Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are desert pans in Namib-Naukluft near Sesriem, reached through red dunes and visited mainly for walking and photography. Choose the pan first; then set your season, transport, permits and daily schedule around that choice.
Choose the salt-pan experience before booking anything
| Destination | What you see | Best for | Base and access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etosha Pan, Etosha National Park | A huge salt pan, smaller pans, waterholes, open savanna and wildlife. | Game viewing, birding and a driving safari. | Use the park’s road network and waterhole circuit; plan overnight stops inside or near the park. |
| Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, Namib-Naukluft Park | White clay pans, tall red dunes, gravel plains and old camel-thorn trees. | Landscape photography, dune walks, stargazing and desert scenery. | Sesriem is the gateway and nearest small town, about 350 km southwest of Windhoek. The final approach includes soft sand. |
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MEFT) lists Etosha National Park at 22,935 km². Its current destination page records 114 large and small mammal species and more than 400 recorded bird species; those are figures on the ministry page, not an independent survey. MEFT lists Namib-Naukluft Park at 49,768 km², making it Namibia’s largest conservation area. The park includes Sossusvlei, Sesriem Canyon, dunes, gravel plains, mountains and ephemeral rivers, with walking trails, 4×4 routes, photography, bird-watching, stargazing and angling among its listed activities.

Which destination fits a short itinerary?
If your priority is wildlife, choose Etosha and accept that the park’s scale makes driving time part of the experience. If your priority is iconic desert scenery, choose the Sesriem gateway and focus on Sossusvlei and Deadvlei rather than trying to combine unrelated stops in a rushed day. A booking request that simply says “the salt pans” can send a driver or lodge to the wrong region, so use the full destination name on every reservation.

Namibia Tourism Board guidance says the country is generally dry and warm and can be visited year-round. It identifies May through October as the dry season and the strongest general period for wildlife viewing. That is a country-level planning guide, not a promise of identical conditions at either pan.

For Sossusvlei, destination-specific guidance recommends April through October because temperatures are more comfortable for walking. Early morning and late afternoon provide softer light and less heat; summer outings can be intensely hot. An early start is particularly useful if you intend to climb a dune, walk across a pan or photograph Deadvlei before the ground and air heat up.
| Travel priority | Planning emphasis |
|---|---|
| Wildlife at Etosha | Target the May–October dry season, when animals are more likely to concentrate at waterholes. Keep the itinerary flexible enough for slow game drives. |
| Cooler Sossusvlei walks | April–October is the practical preference in the destination guidance. Schedule the pan and dune sections early, with a rest period during the hottest part of the day. |
| Summer travel | Possible year-round, but expect greater heat at Sossusvlei. Check a current local forecast and road conditions immediately before each driving leg. |
These ranges are not a substitute for a forecast. The available guidance does not establish a current monthly temperature table or destination-specific prediction, so check weather and gravel-road conditions close to departure.
Decide how you will reach the pans
Self-drive
Namibia Tourism Board says public transport covers only the bare minimum and that a car is the best way to get around. A self-drive trip gives you control over departure times, photo stops and overnight choices, but you take responsibility for fuel, navigation, fatigue, gravel-road speeds and access rules.

For Sossusvlei, a destination guide describes the route from Windhoek as mostly gravel. Ordinary 2WD vehicles can reach the designated 2WD parking area. The last approximately five kilometres are soft sand, so the vehicle you hire and your confidence on sand matter. Treat that description as practical operator advice rather than a definitive current regulation.
Guided tour
Guided tours are a straightforward alternative for Sossusvlei. An operator handles the long gravel approach, navigation, timing and the sandy final section, while you can concentrate on walking and photography. Ask the operator exactly where the vehicle stops, whether a park shuttle is included, what time the day begins and which permits are covered.
Public transport
Do not build an independent pan itinerary around buses or ordinary public transport. The tourism board’s planning guidance says coverage is minimal; you would still need a dependable connection from the nearest practical stop to the park entrance and the internal attractions.

| Choice | Advantages | Responsibilities and questions to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive | Flexible timing, independent stops and the option to combine several parks. | Gravel-road driving, fuel planning, navigation, fatigue management and confirmation of the final sandy-section rule. |
| Guided tour | Local driving and route logistics handled; useful when you do not want to drive sand. | Confirm operator registration, vehicle type, departure time, inclusions, park fees and where the shuttle or transfer begins. |
| Public transport | May cover part of a wider Namibia journey. | Tourism-board guidance says it covers the bare minimum; arrange a separate transfer or tour for the pan itself. |
Questions to settle before paying a deposit
- Is the quoted vehicle a 2WD or 4WD, and where exactly does it stop at Sossusvlei?
- Who drives the soft-sand section, and is a shuttle charge included or payable separately?
- Does the operator handle park entry, advance permits and any required activity paperwork?
- What happens if a gravel road, vehicle problem or weather delay changes the planned return time?
- For Etosha, which gate, camp or waterhole circuit is included, and how much driving is expected each day?
Understand the Sossusvlei final approach before you arrive
Sesriem is the main entrance point and the nearest small town. NWR’s Sesriem Campsite sits at the gateway and lists a filling station, a shop and a shuttle to Deadvlei. Its published rate table for July 2026–June 2027 lists the shuttle at N$180 per person. Rates and operating arrangements can change, so reconfirm the price and departure details directly before relying on that figure.

A ministry clarification also says that the concession does not prevent registered Namibia Tourism Board operators and lodges from taking clients in free of charge. Those statements do not clearly establish whether a private self-driver may use the final sandy stretch under the present arrangement. The safest plan is to ask MEFT, NWR or your lodge immediately before travel:
- May a private 4WD enter the sandy section on your travel date?
- Is shuttle use mandatory for private visitors, or only an available option?
- Where is the current 2WD parking area and how are return departures organised?
- Does your accommodation provide a transfer or have a current operating agreement?
Do not assume an older blog, rental agreement or map reflects the current rule. Access arrangements have been volatile, and the official pages reviewed do not resolve the private-vehicle question.
Build an itinerary that matches the pan
A Sossusvlei and Deadvlei plan
- Stay near Sesriem. Sesriem is the practical gateway, reducing the distance you must cover before an early visit.
- Confirm opening and departure times. Current gate hours were not established in the available sources, so check them with the gate, NWR or your lodge before planning sunrise access.
- Leave early. Use the coolest hours for the sandy approach, dune climbing and the walk across the pan.
- Choose your final transfer. Drive only where the current rule permits; otherwise use the park shuttle or a registered operator.
- Allow time for Deadvlei and Sossusvlei separately. The white pans, red dunes and dead camel-thorn trees reward slow walking and repeated photo angles rather than a rushed stop.
- Return before heat and fatigue become the limiting factors. Carry water for the entire outing and keep a reserve for delays.
An Etosha plan
- Select an eastern, central or western base according to the waterholes and park section you want to drive; distances inside a 22,935 km² park are substantial.
- Use daylight for game drives. Work from the park’s indicated roads and waterholes rather than trying to cover every route in one day.
- Keep stops vehicle-based. Wildlife viewing is the priority, and park rules require visitors to remain in the vehicle except at authorised areas.
- Plan fuel and food before entering. Do not assume every gate or remote waterhole has services; confirm what your chosen camp or lodge provides.
Allow time for the experience you actually booked
Sossusvlei is not only a viewpoint beside a vehicle. The approach, shuttle or sand transfer, dune access, walking on exposed pans and photography all consume time and energy. Build in pauses for water, shade and equipment checks instead of promising several distant attractions in a single hot window. At Etosha, wildlife sightings are unpredictable; a plan that leaves room to wait quietly at a waterhole is more realistic than a checklist of every named stop.
Handle permits and park rules correctly
MEFT says national-park permits are issued at park gates, but requirements differ among parks and routes. For Namib-Naukluft, the main road through the park does not require a permit, while areas including Welwitschia Drive and Sandwich Harbour require advance permits. That means a straightforward Sossusvlei visit does not automatically have the same paperwork as every other Namib-Naukluft excursion.
Recommended Free Tools
Before departure, write down the exact places and roads in your itinerary and ask which permit applies to each one. Confirm whether your tour operator or lodge obtains any advance permit, and keep receipts or permit details accessible during the drive.

- Stay on indicated roads.
- Do not leave the vehicle except in places where the park allows it.

- Ask about current fees and opening hours; the available official pages do not establish a current fee schedule or definitive gate timetable for both destinations.
Pack for exposure, sand and long distances
The minimum Sossusvlei kit is simple but non-negotiable: enough water, sunscreen and a hat. The destination guidance specifically calls out the heat, but it does not define a universal litre allowance, so do not treat any unquantified online checklist as an official standard. Carry enough for the planned walk, waiting time and an unexpected delay, and check whether your guide or vehicle has additional supplies.
- Sun protection: A wide-brim or packable sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen and clothing that covers shoulders and legs. A packable hat is useful because it protects you during open-pan walks and stores easily in luggage.
- Footwear: Comfortable closed shoes with secure soles for sand, uneven clay surfaces and gravel. Break them in before the trip.
- Clothing: Lightweight layers for cool early starts and warmer midday conditions; add a wind-resistant layer for exposed dune ridges.
- Navigation and power: Offline maps, a charged phone, a vehicle charger and a backup battery. Keep critical reservations and permit details available offline.
- Vehicle supplies: Fuel planning, a spare-tire check and a way to contact your operator or accommodation if the vehicle or road causes a delay.
- Photography: Protect cameras and phones from fine sand, and carry a small cloth for dust on lenses.
These are practical preparations, not tested product recommendations. The cited destination guidance supports the hat, sunscreen and water advice; it does not endorse a particular brand or model.
Use a pre-departure checklist
- Decide whether the trip is primarily wildlife-focused at Etosha or landscape-focused at Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.
- Choose dates using the dry-season and cooler-walking guidance, then check a current local forecast.
- Book a car or registered guide; do not rely on public transport for the complete route.
- Reserve accommodation near your intended gate or confirm the driving time from your base.
- Ask MEFT, NWR or your lodge about current gate hours, park fees and the final sandy-section rule.
- Confirm whether any planned side route, such as Welwitschia Drive or Sandwich Harbour, needs an advance permit.
- Pack water, sunscreen, a hat, closed footwear, sun-covering layers and offline navigation.
- Check fuel, tires, communications and the day’s turnaround time before entering a remote route.
Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling both places “the salt pan”
An Etosha wildlife circuit and a Sossusvlei dune-and-pan outing require different bases, vehicles and daily rhythms. Put the destination name on every booking and transfer request.
Assuming a 2WD can complete the whole Sossusvlei route
The operator guidance places ordinary 2WD access at the 2WD parking area and describes soft sand for the final approximately five kilometres. Confirm the current shuttle or 4WD arrangement rather than improvising on arrival.
Scheduling a midday desert walk
Summer heat and direct exposure can make a long walk unnecessarily difficult. Use the cooler morning or late afternoon periods and carry water for delays, not just the planned distance.
Treating a permit at one gate as universal permission
MEFT’s guidance distinguishes the main Namib-Naukluft road from routes that require advance permits. Match paperwork to the exact road and activity.

Following outdated gate or shuttle information
Gate hours, prices and operating rules can change. The NWR rate table’s N$180 shuttle price is specifically for July 2026–June 2027 and should be reconfirmed; the private-vehicle rule for the sandy section remains unclear in the official material reviewed.
What a well-planned trip looks like
For Sossusvlei, the reliable pattern is a Sesriem-area base, an early departure, confirmed access to the final sandy section, adequate water and sun protection, and enough time to walk rather than rush between viewpoints. For Etosha, the reliable pattern is a vehicle suited to long park drives, a base chosen around your intended waterholes, strict adherence to indicated roads and vehicle rules, and a schedule that leaves room for wildlife sightings.
Both destinations reward preparation, but they are not interchangeable stops. Make the pan choice first, verify volatile access details immediately before travel, and let the season and terrain determine your transport and packing decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Etosha Pan and Sossusvlei the same place?
No. Etosha Pan is in northern Etosha National Park and is primarily a wildlife and waterhole destination. Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are desert pans in Namib-Naukluft near Sesriem, surrounded by red dunes and visited for walking and photography.
What is the best time to visit Namibia’s salt pans?
Namibia Tourism Board identifies May through October as the dry season and strongest general wildlife-viewing period. Sossusvlei-specific guidance favors April through October for cooler walking conditions. Check a current forecast because these are broad seasonal guidelines.
Can I reach Sossusvlei in a 2WD vehicle?
Operator guidance says ordinary 2WD vehicles can reach the designated 2WD parking area, while the final approximately five kilometres are soft sand. Confirm the current shuttle or 4WD rule with MEFT, NWR or your lodge before departure.

How much does the Sossusvlei shuttle cost?
NWR’s rate table covering July 2026 through June 2027 lists the Deadvlei shuttle at N$180 per person. Rates and operating arrangements can change, so confirm the current price directly before relying on it.
Do I need a permit for Namib-Naukluft Park?
MEFT says permits are issued at national-park gates, but requirements vary by route. The main road through Namib-Naukluft does not require a permit, while routes such as Welwitschia Drive and Sandwich Harbour require advance permits. Confirm the paperwork for your exact itinerary.
Is public transport practical for an independent salt-pan trip?
Namibia Tourism Board says public transport covers only the bare minimum and recommends a car. For Sossusvlei, you would still need a reliable transfer or guided operator for the park entrance and internal sandy section.

Bring enough water for the walk and possible delay, sunscreen and a hat as the baseline. Closed footwear, sun-covering layers, offline navigation, spare power and protection for cameras from fine sand are sensible practical additions.
Can I leave my vehicle in Etosha or Namib-Naukluft?
Park rules require visitors to stay on indicated roads and not leave the vehicle except where the park allows it. Follow signed instructions and use authorised walking areas rather than stopping beside a road for an unscheduled walk.
The Bottom Line
Choose Etosha for wildlife and waterholes, or choose Sossusvlei and Deadvlei for dunes, pans and desert photography. Travel in the season that matches your objective, use a car or registered guide rather than depending on public transport, and confirm permits, gate hours, shuttle arrangements and the final sandy-section rule immediately before departure. Water, sunscreen, a hat and an early start are the essentials for an exposed Sossusvlei outing.
