Build flexibility into your itinerary, monitor official notices, and verify each train or flight close to departure. If a service is canceled, contact its operator or seller promptly: refund, rerouting, compensation, and insurance depend on the specific journey, ticket, circumstances, and policy.
Before you travel: make the itinerary easier to adapt
Industrial action can disrupt roads and public transport in France, and demonstrations may be announced with little warning, particularly in cities. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises travelers due to travel to or within France to monitor media, check operator advice, and follow authorities. Demonstrations are often peaceful, but can cause disruption; their effects are specific to the location and event. Read the FCDO’s France safety and security guidance.

- Leave practical flexibility around important connections, your first night, and time-sensitive plans. A buffer can help, but cannot guarantee that a disrupted journey will still work.
- Save booking references and the contact details or apps for every operator involved. For international rail journeys, check the operating company’s information as well as the seller’s.
- Keep a charged phone available for messages and live status updates. A portable power bank is an optional convenience, not a substitute for checking the service.
- Consider subscribing to relevant official travel-advice updates. The FCDO recommends travel insurance appropriate to your itinerary, planned activities, and emergency expenses; review the actual policy wording for disruption, alternative transport, accommodation, and exclusions. When protests are announced or underway
Check current notices from local or national authorities and the transport operator. If a demonstration is near a station, airport, or route you need, verify access and service status for that specific location rather than assuming all transport is stopped or that a particular alternative route is safe. Follow police and local-authority directions.
How to check whether your train is running
Use the train number, route, and travel date to check the actual service—not just the general disruption headline. SNCF Connect provides live information about routes and trains in France, including incidents, engineering works, delays, and stops that will not be served. It recommends checking the train’s status and departure time before going to the station. SNCF Connect live traffic information.
#1 Best Overall
- Check the operator’s website or app close to departure, then check again before leaving for the station.
- Verify each connection separately, including whether a stop or transfer has changed.
- For international journeys, consult the operating railway’s own updates; a seller’s notice may not be the only source of current service information.
If your train is delayed or canceled
Contact the railway or seller through the channel identified on your ticket or in the operator’s notice. Keep relevant messages, screenshots, and receipts if you may need to claim a remedy or explain extra costs.
Understand the EU rail options
Under the EU passenger-rights framework, a cancellation or an expected delay of at least 60 minutes at your final destination can generally give you a choice between reimbursement and rerouting options. The details depend on the journey and applicable conditions. Rail-company staff strikes are not treated as extraordinary circumstances for compensation, but that does not mean every strike automatically results in a cash payment. Check the official guidance and the railway’s instructions for your case: EU rail passenger rights.

Check the exact ticket and operator notice
SNCF Connect says exchange or cancellation measures for canceled trains can be limited in time and vary by service. A ticket may need to be canceled through the channel where it was purchased, and the route and ticket conditions matter. Do not assume a measure announced for one train type or route applies to every French service; follow the notice for your train and booking. SNCF Connect disruption guidance.

If a flight is affected
Contact the operating airline and use the official passenger-rights guidance. For a codeshare, EU guidance identifies the operating carrier as responsible for handling the flight problem.
Rank #3
EU rules distinguish between a strike by an airline’s own staff and an external strike, such as action by air-traffic-control or airport staff. An airline’s own staff strike is not an extraordinary circumstance that exempts it from compensation obligations. An external strike may qualify, but the airline must establish the required causal connection and show that reasonable measures could not have avoided the disruption. Ask the carrier about care, rerouting, refund, and complaint channels; keep notices and receipts. Whether compensation is due depends on the facts of the flight. EU air passenger rights.
Choosing an alternative without assuming one mode is best
Before changing your plans or buying a replacement ticket, compare the specific options available to you:
Rank #4
- Status certainty: Is the particular service operating, and where is its current notice published?
- Connection resilience: Are onward legs covered by one through-ticket or separate bookings, and what happens if the first leg is disrupted?
- Arrival timing: How much usable time remains before hotel check-in, an event, or another fixed commitment?
- Change terms: What refund, exchange, or rerouting terms apply to the exact ticket and operator?
- Total contingency cost: Include any replacement fare, extra accommodation, local transfers, and meals; check with your insurer what the policy actually covers.
- Access and safety: Check current advice and notices for the station, airport, route, and any nearby demonstration area.
No mode is automatically the most reliable choice during disruption, and a cost is not necessarily reimbursable just because a journey changed.
