Enter your exact origin, destination and travel date in National Rail or the relevant train operator’s journey planner, then read the date-specific engineering-work notice. That combination tells you whether your train is cancelled, diverted or retimed, whether a replacement bus covers part of the trip, where to board it, and how much longer the complete journey may take.
Do not plan from a general works calendar alone. Engineering arrangements are tied to particular dates and times, and the operating details can change. Recheck the itinerary shortly before departure, especially if you need an accessible vehicle, assistance, a bicycle space or a reliable connection.

What engineering work can change
Planned maintenance is scheduled to keep railway infrastructure safe and reliable. Network Rail explains that the alternative arrangement may be a diverted train, an amended timetable, a rail-replacement bus, or a combination of these. The change can affect only one section of a journey, so the train that runs from your origin may not run all the way to your destination.

A notice may describe several services at once. One operator might cancel trains on a closed section and run buses, while another service is diverted and makes additional station calls to connect passengers with those buses. A journey planner translates the notice into an itinerary for your particular date, stations and departure time.

Start with the exact date and journey planner
1. Search the complete journey
- Open National Rail’s journey planner or the planner for the train operator serving your route.
- Enter the precise origin, destination and date. Add the intended departure or arrival time if it matters.
- Note every leg shown, including a train, a bus and any onward train. Save or screenshot the itinerary if you will be travelling where mobile reception may be unreliable.
The general planned-works listing is useful for finding a notice, but it is not a substitute for the date-specific itinerary. A notice can cover a broad period while only certain trains are cancelled or diverted on the day you travel.
2. Match the result to the works notice
Open the relevant notice and confirm that its dates and times include your journey. Record:
- the affected line or station-to-station section;
- the operator or operators involved;
- the start and end times of the work;
- whether trains are cancelled, diverted or running to an amended timetable;
- whether a bus replaces the whole trip or only a section;
- any special instructions about connections, tickets or station access.
National Rail’s notices are date-sensitive. Reopen both the planner and the notice before setting out because operating details can be revised.

Identify where the replacement bus begins and ends
A replacement bus may cover only part of the rail journey. Write down the station where you leave the train, the station or roadside point where you leave the bus, and the point where the rail journey resumes. If the planner shows an onward train, check its departure time separately rather than assuming the bus arrives at the same platform or even at the same station entrance.
Some notices describe buses between two named stations while other trains continue beyond one of those stations. A dated National Rail notice for Sunday 16 August 2026, for example, describes all lines closed between Three Bridges and Horsham. Buses replace trains between Three Bridges and Horsham or Billingshurst, while other trains run to an amended timetable or are diverted. The notice warns that replacement buses increase journey times and tells passengers to check pickup and set-down locations. This is an example of the information to extract from a notice, not a timetable for another date.

Find the actual bus stop
Do not assume the replacement vehicle leaves from the usual rail platform or directly outside the main entrance. National Rail directs passengers to station information and local signage for pickup and set-down points. The stop may be on a nearby road, at a different station entrance or at a temporary location.
- Read the station-specific information attached to the notice or journey result.
- At the station, follow replacement-service signs and ask staff if the listed stop is not obvious.
- Allow time to walk from the platform to the road stop, particularly at large or unfamiliar stations.
- At the destination, confirm where the bus sets down before planning a tight connection, taxi pickup or accessible route.
Allow for road traffic and boarding time
Road travel is less predictable than a rail timetable. Greater Anglia warns that replacement-bus duration depends on the route and traffic and advises passengers to add time. A bus may also be busier than a normal train, which can slow boarding or leave some passengers waiting for the next vehicle. Build margin into the complete journey, not just the nominal bus duration.
Build a realistic timetable
Calculate door-to-door time
Compare the full itinerary from the first departure to the final arrival. Include:
- the initial train and any revised departure time;
- the walk from train platform to the bus stop;
- waiting for the bus and boarding;
- road travel and likely traffic delays;
- the walk from the bus stop to the next platform;
- the onward train and every planned connection;
- extra time for luggage, children, mobility equipment or crowded vehicles.
A connection that is comfortable on a normal rail timetable may be unrealistic when a bus is involved. Prefer an itinerary with a usable buffer over one that is technically possible but depends on the bus arriving exactly on time.
Compare alternative itineraries
If the planner offers more than one workable route, assess each on the same five criteria:

Choose the route that works in practice, not merely the one with the shortest scheduled duration.

Information about replacement vehicles has not always been as detailed as information about trains. In its review, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) found that work-specific information did not consistently describe replacement-vehicle accessibility. The operator’s accessible-travel information is therefore essential if you use a wheelchair or mobility aid, need step-free access, require a ramp or need assistance boarding.
Ask about the vehicle and the stops
Check the operator’s current replacement-service and accessible-travel guidance, and contact its assisted-travel service in advance when your needs affect the journey. Ask specifically about:
- the type of replacement vehicle and whether it can carry your mobility equipment;
- step-free access at the rail station, bus stop and onward station;
- boarding assistance and where staff will meet you;
- the route between a temporary roadside stop and the station;
- an alternative accessible transport arrangement if the standard bus is unsuitable.
Do not infer one operator’s policy from another. Arrangements, vehicle facilities and notice periods are operator-specific. Greater Anglia’s March 2026 Accessible Travel Policy, for example, describes advance publication and arrangements for alternative accessible transport; its provisions should not be treated as a rule for every rail company.
Allow time for assistance
Tell the assisted-travel service about every leg, including the bus and the station where you change back to a train. A request made only for the rail portion may not cover a temporary bus stop or a transfer across a road. Arrive early enough for staff to locate the correct stop and vehicle.

Tickets, luggage, bicycles and capacity
Replacement services do not automatically reproduce the facilities or restrictions of the train they replace. Check the operator’s instructions for your specific work notice before travelling with a bicycle, bulky luggage, a pushchair or specialist equipment. A bus may have less storage and fewer seats than the train, and some operators may restrict items when demand is high.
Greater Anglia states that its replacement buses accept a valid rail ticket at no additional charge. That is Greater Anglia’s published rule, not a universal Great Britain rule. For another operator, use the ticket and disruption instructions attached to the journey or contact the operator before travel.
Keep your ticket available for inspection on both the train and replacement vehicle. If you have an advance ticket, a season ticket or a ticket involving several operators, check the applicable conditions rather than assuming that every alternative route is accepted.
Use information at the station on the day
Even after planning, check the station departure screens, announcements and staff instructions. Temporary signs may direct passengers to a different stop from the one shown in an older notice. If you cannot find the pickup point, ask a member of station staff before leaving the station area.
ORR’s fieldwork illustrates why this matters. In its follow-up review, 10 of the 17 operators examined did not provide an online map before travel, although several supplied maps at stations. That figure applies only to ORR’s fieldwork sample and its review context; it is not a statement about every operator or about current map availability. Carry the station information shown by the planner and allow time to follow local signs.
What the regulator found about replacement-service information
ORR reported making 17 journeys on planned rail-replacement services across England and Wales during summer 2024. It explicitly described the sample as small and said it did not cover Scotland. The regulator’s executive summary states: “Planning and making a journey when planned rail replacement services are in use should be as easy for passengers as when travelling by train.”
The findings point to a practical standard for passengers: information should cover the complete journey, not just the rail timetable. In particular, look for a clear disruption map, the exact replacement stop, connection information and accessibility details. If one of those is missing online, ask the operator or station staff before travel.
Recheck close to departure
- Run the journey planner again using the exact date, origin and destination.
- Open the latest engineering-work notice and compare its times with your ticket.
- Confirm whether the bus still replaces the same section and whether pickup or set-down points have changed.
- Check the first and last train connections around the bus leg.
- Review accessibility, bicycle, luggage and assistance arrangements one more time.
- Leave early enough for the walk to the bus stop, queues, traffic and a possible later vehicle.
National Rail explicitly advises passengers to check before travelling. Planned-work listings and operator examples are tied to particular dates, and details can change after a ticket is purchased.

There is no single refund or compensation rule established for every ticket affected by planned engineering work. Your rights depend on the ticket conditions and the relevant operator’s current policy. Read the conditions for the ticket you actually hold and use the operator’s disruption or refund guidance. Do not assume that a replacement bus, an amended timetable or a missed connection produces the same remedy in every case.
The evidence here concerns Great Britain rail travel. It does not establish cross-border rules or practices, so journeys involving another national rail system require that system’s own guidance.
A concise planning checklist
- Date and route: enter the exact travel date, origin and destination in the National Rail or operator journey planner.
- Notice: read the date-specific work notice, including cancellations, diversions and amended times.
- Bus section: identify both ends of the replacement leg and where the train journey resumes.
- Stop: confirm the actual pickup and set-down locations from station information or signage.
- Time: add walking, waiting, traffic and connection margin to the displayed rail time.
- Accessibility: verify the vehicle, stop and assistance arrangements with the operator.
- Practical restrictions: check rules for tickets, luggage, bicycles, children and mobility equipment.
- Final check: reopen the planner and notice before departure and ask station staff if anything is unclear.
The Bottom Line
Use the exact-date journey planner and the matching engineering-work notice, trace every train and bus leg, confirm the real replacement stop, add road and transfer time, and verify accessibility or special-item arrangements with the operator. Recheck immediately before leaving because planned-work details are date-specific and can change.
