The most reliable way to plan a LEGO city is to measure the shelf or table first, record every building’s actual footprint, and test the arrangement on a consistent grid before buying baseplates or furniture. LEGO modular buildings are designed to stand alone or connect to one another, so you can build a compact street, a corner, or a deeper block without committing to one permanent format.
There is no universal “modular building size.” Even LEGO’s own catalog examples vary substantially in width, while community-designed footprints are only proposals. Treat dimensions as set-specific, preserve access for viewing and dusting, and reserve at least one area for future additions.

Start with the display surface, not the buildings
Clear the shelf, cabinet top, or table that will hold the city and measure the usable width and depth. Measure the area the models can actually occupy, not the furniture’s advertised dimensions. A wall, cabinet frame, door swing, skirting board, or rear trim can make part of a surface unusable. Also note whether you can reach the back of the display once it is assembled.

- Usable width: the left-to-right span available for buildings and streets.
- Usable depth: the front-to-back area that remains clear of walls, doors, and cabinet edges.
- Viewing side: whether people see the city from the front only, from two sides, or from all around.
- Access limits: places where a hand must reach for cleaning, repairs, or play.
Make a simple drawing with those boundaries. A sheet of paper, masking tape on the surface, or a digital grid can all work. The important part is using one scale consistently so that a footprint does not appear to fit merely because it was sketched loosely.

Do this measurement before purchasing a display table, shelving, or a large quantity of baseplates. Furniture can consume more depth than expected, and a city that fits on paper may become unreachable when placed against a wall.
Inventory every building by its real footprint
Measure each assembled building or check the instructions and official product information for that specific set. Record width, depth, and any overhanging elements that affect neighboring buildings. Do not substitute a remembered “standard modular size” for an actual measurement.
LEGO’s US summer 2020 catalog makes the series’ flexibility explicit: “Each LEGO® modular building can be displayed individually or connected to others!” That means a single building can be the complete display, while a larger collection can share streets or walls.
The same catalog demonstrates why planning by set matters:
| Set example | Catalog dimensions | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Assembly Square | Over 13 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches deep | Historical dimensions for this named set in the 2020 US catalog |
| Downtown Diner | Over 13 inches high, 9 inches wide, and 9 inches deep | Historical dimensions for this named set in the 2020 US catalog |
These are not current universal specifications for every modular building. The different widths alone can change how many models fit in a row, and a corner arrangement may expose the depth of one set more than another. Include steps, balconies, signs, trees, and removable roof sections in your own clearance check when they project beyond the main walls.
Choose an arrangement that matches the room
Straight street row
A straight row places façades along one long edge. It uses length efficiently and is usually the easiest format for a shallow shelf. The front of every building remains visible, and the rear can stay close to a wall. The trade-off is a less varied street scene: the display reads as one frontage rather than a neighborhood with an interior.
Use this arrangement when the viewing angle is mostly frontal, the surface is shallow, or you want the simplest route for adding the next building at either end.

Corner or L-shaped neighborhood
Turn a row at a right angle so two streets meet. This creates a recognizable corner and can hide an otherwise awkward shelf edge. It needs more depth than a straight row, and the inside corner can become difficult to reach. Check that both façades remain visible from the room’s normal viewing position.
Place the largest or tallest model where it will not block the return leg. A corner also gives you a natural location for a plaza, a tree-lined junction, or a small open area.
Deeper block with a courtyard
A block arrangement uses buildings on more than one side of an open center. It offers the strongest sense of a city district, but it consumes depth and makes rear access important. A courtyard can be a park, service lane, parking area, or future building slot.
Use this format only when you can reach the interior. If the display is against a wall and cannot be pulled forward, a shallow perimeter is safer than a deep block that traps minifigures and dust.

Mixed-depth scene
You do not have to give every building the same setback. A deeper building can anchor one end while narrower façades continue along the front. Keep a clear visual route—such as a road or plaza—so the irregular depth looks intentional rather than squeezed.
Use studs and baseplates to test the plan
A consistent stud grid makes trial layouts easier to move and revise. LEGO baseplates can serve as planning units, but buy them only after confirming the furniture’s measured width and depth. The following examples show how different a proposed module can be; they are not a LEGO standard or a guarantee that a released set uses the footprint.
| Example | Proposed footprint | Status |
|---|---|---|
| LEGO Ideas High School proposal (2017) | 48×32 studs for the building | Community proposal, not an official released-set specification |
| LEGO Ideas High School alternative (2017) | 64×32 studs including additional space such as a courtyard | Community proposal, not an official released-set specification |
| LEGO Ideas Modular Parking Lot proposal (2020) | 32×16 studs | Community proposal, not a required standard module |
The parking-lot example is useful because it illustrates how a partial area can complete a street scene. It does not mean every city needs a parking lot of that size. Treat all proposal dimensions as inspiration for a grid, then replace them with the measurements of your own models and surface.

A step-by-step planning workflow
- Measure the empty surface. Write down usable width, usable depth, viewing sides, and any obstruction. Include the space needed to lift a model out rather than measuring only the footprint it occupies while sitting still.
- Measure or verify each building. Note the main width and depth, plus balconies, awnings, stairs, trees, signs, and other projections. Keep the set name beside every measurement.
- Draw the boundary to scale. Use graph paper, a stud grid, or tape on the table. Mark walls, cabinet edges, and areas that cannot be reached.
- Place the largest footprints first. Test the widest and deepest buildings before filling gaps with smaller façades. This prevents a late discovery that the largest model has nowhere to go.
- Test at least three configurations. Try a straight row, a corner, and a deeper block or courtyard if the surface permits. Photograph each version from the normal viewing height.
- Mark open space deliberately. Reserve positions for a road, plaza, park, parking area, service lane, or future building instead of treating every gap as wasted space.
- Check reach and sight lines. Stand where visitors will stand, then reach toward the rear and inside corners. If you cannot comfortably retrieve a model, revise the depth before fixing anything permanently.
- Plan the next addition. Leave a clearly identified expansion edge or flexible module. Verify the complete dimensions again before buying furniture or cutting a baseboard.
Plan streets and open areas without assuming a universal road size
The available sources do not establish one official road width, setback, or spacing rule for modular displays. Decide those dimensions from the vehicles, sidewalk elements, and access you want to show, then keep the chosen spacing consistent across the scene.
Use open areas to solve practical problems as well as visual ones:
- Road or avenue: creates a visual line through the city and separates opposing façades.
- Plaza or park: gives the eye a pause between tall buildings and provides room for trees, benches, or minifigures.
- Parking or service area: fills an irregular gap and can make a side or rear view feel intentional.
- Future slot: preserves flexibility when you expect to add another building later.
Keep open space wide enough for the pieces you plan to place there and for your hand to reach them. A narrow decorative strip that cannot be cleaned or populated often becomes a dust trap.
Balance width, depth, access, and future flexibility
Compare each candidate layout on four questions:
- Total width: Does the row fit without pressing against a wall, frame, or shelf edge?
- Total depth: Can the deepest point fit while leaving room to see and handle the models?
- Viewing angle: Are important façades hidden from the side of the room where people actually stand?
- Future flexibility: Is there a deliberate place to add, remove, or rearrange a building?
A straight row usually wins on length efficiency. A corner or block can communicate a stronger neighborhood, but it uses more depth and makes interior access more important. Neither is inherently better; the right choice depends on the measured surface and the way the display will be viewed.
As a simple calculation example, placing the two catalog examples side by side would require more than the sum of their listed widths before allowing for any street, end clearance, or decorative space. The calculation is only a planning illustration: the actual arrangement still depends on each model’s projections and the shelf boundary.

Make the display reachable and stable
Accessibility is part of the layout, not an afterthought. A model at the rear of a deep cabinet may look impressive but become impractical if you must remove several buildings to dust or repair it. Leave a route for your hand, and test it with the tallest models already in place.
Check doors, drawers, and nearby traffic before finalizing the position. A display that is frequently bumped needs a layout that keeps fragile projections away from the edge and avoids forcing people to reach across the entire city.

Collections rarely stay static. Instead of filling every available inch on the first day, identify an expansion edge. It can be an empty baseplate, a removable parking area, a courtyard, or simply a measured strip at the end of a street.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep a record of the grid positions and the measurements that determined them. When a new building arrives, you can test it against the plan rather than dismantling the entire display. If a future set is wider or deeper than expected, move the flexible module first.
Modularity also makes seasonal or temporary scenes easier. Buildings can stand individually while you work on a larger neighborhood, then connect to the rest when the surface is ready. Avoid gluing or permanently fixing pieces until you are certain the footprint and access work for your room.
Common planning mistakes and their fixes
Assuming every modular building is the same size
Symptom: the final building does not fit the remaining gap.
Fix: inventory actual footprints first, place the widest and deepest models first, and keep at least one flexible area.

Baseplates are useful once you know the grid and the open areas you want to preserve. Buy enough to support the tested arrangement, not an imagined future collection. If the plan may change, choose a layout that can be lifted and rearranged without rebuilding every street.
For tables and shelving, compare the measured usable surface with the complete footprint of the layout, including roads and access. A product’s nominal width may not equal its clear interior width once frames, supports, or trim are included. Confirm that the furniture can stand level and remain reachable from the viewing side.
Final planning checklist
- Have you measured the clear width and depth of the actual display surface?
- Have you recorded each building’s set-specific footprint rather than using a universal assumption?
- Did you test a straight row and, where depth allows, a corner or block arrangement?
- Are roads, plazas, parks, parking, or future slots marked as intentional open areas?
- Can you see and reach the rear and inside corners?
- Have you allowed for balconies, signs, trees, stairs, and other projections?
- Is there a flexible edge for the next building?
- Did you verify the final dimensions before buying baseplates or furniture?
The best LEGO city display is the one that fits the measured room, reads clearly from its normal viewing angle, and remains easy to change. Start with the surface, build the plan around real footprints, and let open space and access shape the city as much as the buildings do.
