If the entire roster locks when the first game starts, you must decide before that earlier kickoff. Check your league’s rules rather than assuming every platform works the same way.
Check when your lineup locks
Fantasy services can offer different lineup-lock rules, and league managers may choose among them. ESPN documents both individual player locks at each player’s scheduled game time and a setting that locks the entire roster at the first game of the scoring period. In the first setup, players whose games have not started can remain movable; in the second, an early game can close all lineup changes.

ESPN’s Lineup and Roster Lock Times article, updated April 10, 2025, describes those options. Find the corresponding setting or rules in your own league before planning around a late swap.
Build a fallback before game day
- Set a valid lineup early. Fill every required starting slot with an eligible player so an unresolved decision does not leave an earlier game or position empty.
- Identify a bench replacement. Choose someone eligible for the same position or flex slot, subject to your league’s roster rules.
- Compare both kickoff times. If you intend to wait for news, the replacement’s game should start later than the uncertain player’s game. The replacement can lock when their own game begins.
- Keep the replacement on the bench. Make sure the required slot and player moves are possible under your platform’s roster rules.
- Recheck status near kickoff. Use the latest available team and platform information, then make any swap before the uncertain player’s game starts.
ESPN says roster moves involving a player may be made up to the scheduled start of that player’s team game in the scoring period. NFL Fantasy’s Official Rules 2024 likewise tie a status change to the scheduled start shown by NFL.com’s clock. These are platform-specific rules, not a promise of a grace period; use the deadline shown by your service.

Use late news without treating “questionable” as a forecast
“Questionable” is a broad injury designation, not a precise probability that a player will suit up or perform well. ESPN’s fantasy football guide says teams designate inactives 90 minutes before each game. Treat that as a useful checkpoint, not a guarantee that every decision will be clear at that moment; check the relevant player’s status as close to kickoff as your league’s rules allow.
ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury and inactive list. Its settings guide recommends choosing individual player lock times, which can preserve the option to adjust players whose games have not started. Waiting has a procedural advantage when your league permits it: you can act on newer availability information. The cited guidance establishes no statistical comparison showing that waiting produces better fantasy results.

Choose your plan for the lock rule you have

ESPN describes Lineup Protection as an optional feature for eligible players marked Out or on injured reserve. Its separate IR guidance explains injured-reserve roster handling. Do not assume the feature applies to a player merely marked questionable or that another platform offers the same protection.
After a player locks
Once a player’s slot has locked, do not count on being able to make a normal lineup change. ESPN’s Roster Adjustments After Players Have Locked explains the service’s post-lock adjustment rules. Those rules are platform-specific, so resolve the decision before the applicable deadline rather than relying on a correction afterward.
