Place a sensor where it can measure the space or event you care about—not where a nearby heat source, airflow, obstacle, or wireless dead zone distorts its reading. The right spot depends on the sensor’s purpose and model: air monitors, room-temperature sensors, and life-safety alarms follow different rules.
Start with what the sensor needs to tell you
Before mounting a smart sensor, decide what question it should answer. A room sensor should reflect the conditions in a room people use; an air monitor should represent the area whose air you want to understand; a leak sensor needs to be positioned to detect water where it is likely to collect. Placement advice for one type does not automatically apply to another. Check the product’s installation guide for its permitted environment, mounting orientation, airflow needs, wireless compatibility, and operating limits.

- Choose a representative spot: avoid a position dominated by a localized source or an unusual microclimate unless that is exactly what you want to monitor.
- Keep its sensing area unobstructed: furniture, enclosures, and blocked air inlets can interfere with some readings.
- Check connectivity at the actual location: the advertised wireless range may not account for walls, floors, appliances, or other interference.
- Know whether it is a monitor, controller, or alarm: an environmental monitor is not a substitute for a certified life-safety alarm.
Where to place indoor and outdoor air sensors
The U.S. EPA advises choosing a site that represents the area of interest, since “where you place it can impact the usefulness of the data.” Its Guide to Siting and Installing Air Sensors offers practical guidance for indoor and outdoor monitoring.

Indoors: aim for typical room conditions
For an indoor air sensor, EPA recommends placing it around typical breathing-zone height—3–6 feet—where air can move freely. Keep it away from nearby sources or sinks that could skew the result, such as a toaster or an air cleaner. Avoid corners and spots behind furniture. Near windows, doors, or HVAC outlets, changing temperature, humidity, or outdoor-air influence may make readings less representative of ordinary conditions in the room.

Outdoors: avoid a reading dominated by one nearby feature
If you want a representative neighborhood reading, avoid placing the sensor beside localized sources or sinks such as grills, smoking areas, dusty roads, building exhausts, or vegetation barriers. Allow air to move freely around it, and consider whether nearby buildings, fences, trees, equipment, or high-voltage power lines could affect airflow or create electronic interference. Follow the device manual’s instructions for air inlets and outlets, and consider safe access, security, power, and connectivity when choosing a site.
Review the readings, then reassess the site
EPA recommends evaluating collected data and revisiting the site as conditions or surroundings change. Where an appropriate reference monitor is available, compare how readings rise and fall over time. If they do not track, a nearby source or structure may be influencing the sensor. Relocation may help. A lower-cost sensor is not necessarily reporting regulatory-grade concentrations, so a trend comparison may be more informative than expecting exact numerical agreement.

Room-temperature sensors: use the product’s own placement rules
Google’s guidance for its Nest Temperature Sensor is a product-specific example, not a universal temperature-sensor standard. The setup guide applies in the U.S. and Canada and lists compatibility with Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat generations 3 and 4. Google recommends a frequently occupied room and placement “about chest high.” See Google’s Nest Temperature Sensor installation guidance for the full model-specific instructions.
Avoid local heat, cold, and poor airflow
For this Nest model, Google says not to place the sensor near vents, stoves, hot-water pipes, outside, in direct sunlight, on or near a window or other uninsulated surface, or where circulation is poor—for example, inside a vase, behind a painting, or in a closet. Keep it in the zone controlled by its thermostat. A sensor in a much hotter or colder room than the rest of that zone can cause the system to overheat or overcool other rooms.

Test the connection before permanent installation
Google specifies a maximum distance of 50 feet (15 meters) from a compatible thermostat for this sensor, but walls, floors, appliances, furniture, and electronics can reduce effective range. Try the intended location before fixing the sensor permanently; the app can check whether it communicates with the thermostat. If temperature differences or connection problems persist, consult Google’s Nest Temperature Sensor troubleshooting guidance. Other sensors may use different radios, ranges, reporting schedules, or installation requirements.
Smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms need dedicated safety placement
Do not rely on a low-cost air-quality monitor to warn of an immediate threat. The EPA explains that audible or visual alerts from low-cost air pollution monitors are not designed to warn of potential immediate danger to health or life in the way smoke detectors and CO alarms are. Alert thresholds for many indoor pollutants may be set by the manufacturer because widely accepted indoor concentration limits do not exist for most pollutants. See EPA’s guidance on low-cost air pollution monitors and indoor air quality.

Smoke alarms in U.S. homes
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Its smoke-alarm placement guidance was reviewed May 1, 2026.
Carbon-monoxide alarms in U.S. homes
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends CO alarms on each level of a home and outside sleeping areas. The EPA likewise advises a separate CO detector on each floor and recommends placing a single detector near sleeping areas. See CPSC’s CO alarm guidance and the EPA’s advice on where to place a carbon-monoxide detector. Always follow the alarm’s manual and applicable local code; requirements and product instructions can differ.

Check placement, compatibility, and alerts before relying on a sensor
Use this checklist when installing a smart sensor. For motion sensors, water-leak sensors, and other types not covered by the guidance above, rely on the exact product’s installation guide rather than borrowing placement rules from an air monitor or thermostat sensor.
Quick Recap
- Does the sensor measure what you need, and is the chosen location representative of that question?
- Does the manufacturer permit installation in that environment and orientation?
- Can air, water, or the signal the sensor needs reach it without obstruction?
- Is it compatible with the intended hub, thermostat, or network, and does it remain connected from the proposed location?
- Do you understand how its app reports alerts, thresholds, battery status, and offline status?
- If it serves a safety function, is it the appropriate certified alarm and installed as required by the manual and local rules?
- After installation, do the readings and alerts make sense for the location? Recheck if the room, equipment, airflow, or surroundings change.
