Start with symmetry, not a magic measurement. Put the left and right compact speakers at equal distances from your main listening seat, form a roughly even stereo triangle, and place the tweeters close to seated ear height. Keep the pair out of corners, leave as much wall clearance as your room and the speaker manual allow, then try a small amount of toe-in. From the seat you actually use, adjust spacing, distance from the wall and angle in small, matched steps until voices lock to the center, bass sounds even and the stage remains natural.
There is no single wall distance or toe-in angle that works for every passive bookshelf speaker. Cabinet size, port location, crossover design, room dimensions and nearby surfaces all change the result. Treat published distances as starting guidance for a particular model, not as a universal prescription.

Build the basic stereo geometry first
Choose the listening seat
Decide where you normally listen before moving the speakers. Use the center of your usual chair or sofa as the reference point, rather than the middle of the room or a temporary standing position. A setup that sounds balanced from an unused seat is not useful if your head is normally elsewhere.

Keep the seat facing the speakers as squarely as the room permits. If one speaker is much closer to a side wall, a cabinet or an open doorway than the other, that side will interact differently with the room. Move the seat or both speakers together when possible instead of correcting one channel in isolation.

Use an even triangle as a starting shape
Imagine lines from your head to each tweeter and a line between the speakers. Begin with the two speaker-to-seat distances approximately equal to the distance between the speakers. This familiar triangle is a useful starting geometry, not a rule that every compact speaker must follow.
Manufacturers describe different starting ratios. Axiom’s model-specific guidance for its M3 bookshelf speaker suggests beginning with speaker separation of about half the listening distance. Teufel’s support guidance uses a triangle calculation that varies with the model and room. Those recommendations cannot be combined into one mandatory ratio. Start with the triangle, then let the center image and bass response decide whether the pair should move closer together, farther apart, nearer the seat or farther away.
Match left and right distances
Measure from the listening position to comparable points on each speaker, preferably the tweeter or the front-center of each cabinet. Match the distances as closely as the room allows. Also match the distance from each speaker to the nearest side boundary when practical. Unequal paths can make a centered vocal appear to pull toward one side even when the electronics are operating normally.

Keep the cabinets at the same height and use the same orientation. A speaker tilted upward on one side or turned farther inward than its partner changes the arrival of high frequencies and can move the apparent center.
Decide how much wall clearance the room allows
Why boundaries change the sound
Walls and floors reinforce low frequencies. As a compact speaker moves close to a rear wall or a corner, reflected bass can become more prominent and less even. Moving it away can reduce that reinforcement, but the amount of useful clearance depends on the room, cabinet tuning and the manufacturer’s design assumptions.

Begin with practical space behind each cabinet and avoid placing either speaker tightly into a corner. Do not treat a distance quoted for one model as a specification for another. Cambridge Audio, Teufel, KEF UK and other manufacturers publish different starting advice, which is why the owner’s manual remains the authority for your pair.
Pay special attention to rear ports
A rear-facing bass port needs unobstructed space to operate as designed. If the manual gives a minimum clearance, follow it before experimenting. When the manual is silent, start farther from the wall than a cramped shelf allows and move the matched pair in small increments while listening for changes in bass. Never push one speaker much closer to the wall than the other merely to make furniture fit.

Work with a small room instead of fighting it
In a narrow room, perfect clearance may be impossible. Prioritize symmetry and a clean path to the listening seat, then use the smallest practical distance from the rear wall that does not make bass boomy. A little distance can be more useful than chasing a large, identical gap that makes the stereo triangle impossible.
| Placement choice | Useful starting point | What to evaluate from the seat | Next adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rear-wall clearance | Leave practical space; stay out of corners and follow the model manual, especially for a rear port. | Are bass notes full but distinct, without one-note boom? | Move both speakers the same small amount toward or away from the wall. |
| Speaker spacing | Begin with an approximately even triangle; model guidance may use a different ratio. | Does a vocal remain solid in the center rather than sounding between or outside the speakers? | Narrow or widen the pair slightly while preserving equal distances. |
| Toe-in | Start facing forward or with a slight inward angle, as the manufacturer recommends. | Is the center focused without making the stage or listening area unnaturally narrow? | Rotate both cabinets by the same small amount. |
| Support and height | Put tweeters near seated ear height on stable stands or furniture. | Do voices and cymbals sound clear without a strong change when you sit up or slouch? | Change support height or tilt only if the speaker’s manual and support allow it. |
Set tweeter height and support safely
Aim the tweeter at seated ear height
High frequencies are more directional than bass. Position the tweeters approximately level with your ears when you are seated in the main position. The Revel M106/M105 owner manual and other manufacturer guides make seated tweeter height part of their imaging advice.
If a table, media console or bookcase puts the speakers far above or below that line, a pair of dedicated stands can solve the geometry. Choose stands whose height, top-plate dimensions, load rating and mounting method suit the exact speaker. Confirm that the base will not wobble and that the cabinet cannot be knocked off by a cable or a passing person.

When a shelf or desk is the only option
Use the most rigid, level surface available and keep both speakers supported in the same way. Push neither cabinet into a side wall or the back corner of a shelf. If the tweeters are too low, raising the speakers safely is more important than achieving a particular separation number; if they are too high, lowering them may improve the center image more than adding toe-in.

The cited placement guidance does not establish a universal sound-quality improvement from pads, so use them for a clear positioning or safety need rather than as a guaranteed upgrade.
Adjust toe-in without narrowing the soundstage too far
Start with a small angle
Toe-in means rotating each speaker inward so its acoustic axis points toward the listening area. Begin with the cabinets facing forward or with a slight inward angle, following the model’s instructions. Paradigm recommends aiming the speaker axes so they cross just behind the listening position; that is a useful starting experiment, not a requirement for every design.
Cambridge Audio’s guide quotes engineer Ollie: “Often the most convincing imaging is achieved by some level of toe in.” The useful part of that advice is the word some. A little rotation can sharpen a centered vocal, while excessive rotation can make the sweet spot smaller or the stage sound unnaturally constricted.
Change both angles together
Rotate the left and right cabinets by equal, small increments. Listen from the normal seat after each change. If the center becomes more stable and the stage remains open, keep the new angle. If the sound becomes narrow, bright or overly concentrated between the cabinets, reduce the angle and compare again.

Do not use toe-in to hide asymmetry
If the image is off-center because one speaker is closer to a wall, changing only that speaker’s angle can mask the symptom while leaving the room imbalance. First restore equal distances and orientation. Use unequal angles only as a deliberate compromise when the room cannot be made symmetrical, and document the change so you can return to it.
A repeatable setup procedure
- Mark the main seat. Place a temporary marker at the position of your head when seated. Use this point for every listening comparison.
- Place the pair symmetrically. Start with an approximately even triangle, or get as close as the room permits. Measure the left and right paths to the seat and match them.
- Set the height. Put both tweeters near seated ear height. If furniture cannot do that safely, use stands that fit the speaker and carry its weight.
- Create practical clearance. Pull the cabinets away from corners and leave rear-wall space. Check the model manual before settling on a distance, with extra care for rear-ported cabinets.
- Choose the initial angle. Face the speakers forward or apply slight toe-in. If the manufacturer gives a crossing-point recommendation, use it as the first trial.
- Check the center image. Play a familiar recording with a lead vocal or another clearly centered source. From the marked seat, the voice should appear between the speakers rather than attach to one cabinet.
- Tune toe-in. Rotate both speakers by the same small amount, listen again, and keep the angle that focuses the center without shrinking the stage.
- Tune spacing and depth. Move both speakers a small, equal distance closer together, farther apart, toward the seat or away from it. Change only one dimension at a time so you know what caused the improvement.
- Check bass across familiar material. Listen for bass notes that remain distinct rather than boomy, weak or concentrated on one side. If the balance changes dramatically, revisit rear-wall and corner clearance before making a large spacing change.
- Secure the final position. Once the image and bass are satisfactory, make sure stands are stable, shelves are level and cables cannot pull a cabinet out of alignment.
How to judge the result
Center vocals
A well-aligned pair produces a stable phantom center: a singer or presenter seems to occupy a point between the cabinets. The image should not wander when you sit in your usual position. If it does, recheck equal distances and matching toe-in before changing anything else.
Bass evenness
Use several recordings rather than one bass-heavy track. Listen for notes that jump out, disappear or blur together. A small change in distance from the rear wall can alter boundary reinforcement, so make matched moves and allow your ears a moment to compare each position.
Stage width and depth
With too little spacing, instruments can sound crowded in the middle. With too much spacing, the center may weaken and the stage can split into two obvious sources. Toe-in also affects this trade-off: more angle can improve focus, while less can open the listening area.
Consistency around the seat
Move your head slightly left and right after finding a promising position. A small change is normal, but a dramatic collapse indicates that the toe-in or spacing is demanding a very narrow sweet spot. Decide whether maximum focus from one seat or a wider area matters more for your household.

Troubleshoot common placement symptoms
The vocal pulls left or right
- Measure the left and right distances again; a difference of only a small fraction of the room can be audible.
- Check that both cabinets have the same toe-in and height.
- Look for a nearby wall, cabinet or opening that makes one side acoustically different. Move the pair or seat to improve symmetry before applying a one-sided angle.
Bass is boomy or one-note
- Move both speakers away from the nearest corner or rear wall in small, equal steps.
- Confirm that a rear port is not blocked by a shelf or wall.
- Retest from the normal seat; do not judge only while standing beside a cabinet.
Bass sounds thin
- Try moving the matched pair slightly closer to the rear wall, within the clearance allowed by the manual.
- Check whether the speakers have been moved too far apart or too far into the room.
- Compare several recordings before deciding that a change is an improvement.
The stage is narrow or overly bright
- Reduce toe-in a little and listen again.
- Verify that the tweeters are not aimed well above or below your ears.
- If the image remains cramped, widen the spacing modestly while preserving equal distances.
The center is weak despite equal distances
- Apply a small, equal amount of toe-in and listen for a more focused phantom center.
- Check that the speakers are aimed at the same crossing point; one cabinet pointing past the seat can dilute the center.
- If widening the pair caused the problem, return toward the previous spacing.
Adapt the layout to difficult rooms
Desk or near-field listening
At a desk, the seat-to-speaker distance is short, so small changes in angle and height are obvious. Keep the tweeters aimed at seated ears and avoid placing one cabinet against a monitor or side wall while the other is exposed. Use stable wedges or pads only when they solve a specific aiming or support problem.
Open-plan or asymmetrical rooms
When one side opens into another space, exact acoustic symmetry may be impossible. Preserve equal geometric distances first, then use modest toe-in and small spacing changes to stabilize the center. Do not keep moving one speaker alone indefinitely; the room itself may be the limiting factor.
Furniture-bound installations
If a console fixes the front-to-back position, prioritize matching height, orientation and side clearance. A stable stand beside the furniture may produce a better tweeter position than forcing both cabinets onto a shelf that is too high or too deep.

Cambridge Audio, Teufel, Paradigm, Revel, KEF UK and Axiom all provide useful placement guidance, but they do not prescribe one identical geometry. Revel emphasizes symmetry, imaging, toe-in and seated tweeter height. Paradigm describes axes crossing just behind the listener. KEF discusses wall clearance and toe-in. Axiom’s advice is tied to its M3 model, and Teufel’s spacing guidance varies by compact-speaker design. These differences are evidence that placement instructions are design- and room-dependent.
No dated quantitative study or named statistic establishes a universally best distance or angle for compact passive speakers. The practical recommendations above are manufacturer setup guidance and a controlled way to tune your own room, not a laboratory guarantee that one number will outperform every other arrangement.
When to seek more than repositioning
Basic placement should be exhausted before buying accessories. If you cannot obtain a stable center or even bass after matching geometry, height and wall clearance, a room-acoustics consultant may be appropriate for a persistent room problem. No particular provider or stand compatibility is established here, so verify any service, stand dimensions and load rating for your exact speakers before purchasing.
