Place a Fios Wi-Fi extender between your router and the room with weak coverage, where it can still receive a usable signal from the router. Use the My Verizon Wi-Fi Analyzer, if available, and your extender’s model-specific status lights to find a good spot; there is no universal router-to-extender distance in Verizon’s guidance.
Where should you put a Fios Wi-Fi extender?
Start between the Fios router and the weak-signal area. An extender needs a usable connection back to the router to relay Wi-Fi, so placing it inside a dead zone may leave it with too little signal to extend. Verizon’s Fios guidance describes the target position as between the router and the area where Wi-Fi is weak.

To identify and refine the location:
- Find where coverage drops. Use the Wi-Fi Analyzer tool in the My Verizon app, where available, to check signal strength in the rooms where you need coverage.
- Choose an intermediate spot. Start between the router and the weak area rather than at the far edge of the dead zone.
- Check the extender’s indicators. Follow the instructions for your exact model. For the access point setup covered by Verizon’s instructions, slow-blinking yellow means move closer to the router, fast-blinking yellow means move farther away, and solid white indicates the instructed position has been reached. These signals should not be assumed to apply to every extender generation.
- Recheck the target room. After moving the extender, use the analyzer or your device’s connection to check whether coverage improved where you need it.
For an E3200, Verizon’s setup instructions call for pairing it beside the gateway first, then unplugging it and moving it to the selected location between the gateway and weak area. Follow the instructions for your particular model.
How far should the extender be from the router?
Verizon does not state a universal distance in feet between a Fios router and extender. Walls, furniture, distance, and building materials all affect Wi-Fi; concrete and brick can weaken the signal. Use the analyzer and the indicators for your model instead of relying on a fixed measurement.

Where should you avoid placing it?
- Keep it at least 10 feet from cordless phones and microwaves. This is Verizon’s placement guidance, not a universal measured performance threshold.
- Avoid large metal objects and nearby interference sources. Verizon’s general whole-home Wi-Fi advice also recommends keeping away from TVs and microwaves.
- Choose a suitable indoor location. Avoid moisture, excessive dust, heat sources, and extreme cold. The extender must remain indoors.
- Prefer a central, elevated position when practical. For coverage toward a backyard, Verizon recommends locating the extender near an outer wall, while keeping it indoors.
Does placement depend on the Fios extender model?
Yes. “Fios extender” can refer to devices from different generations, and their compatibility and connection requirements vary. Check the exact router and extender models on Verizon’s current support information before buying or setting up an extender.
| Extender or guidance | Placement or connection consideration |
|---|---|
| Current Fios Extender guidance | Verizon describes model compatibility and wireless placement; verify that the specific extender supports your router. |
| E3200 | Pair beside the gateway first, then unplug and move it to the selected spot between the gateway and weak area. |
| Legacy Fios Network Extender guidance | Some models require placement where a live coax or Ethernet outlet is available. |
| WCB6200Q | Requires a coax or Ethernet connection to carry traffic back to the router. |
Do not assume every current extender needs a cable, or that every Fios router supports every extender. Wired backhaul requirements depend on the model.

Will better placement increase internet speed?
Not necessarily. An extender is intended to extend Wi-Fi coverage, not guarantee a faster internet connection. Verizon says the Extender Mini is designed to extend coverage rather than increase Wi-Fi speed; actual speeds vary with network and environmental factors. A better location may help a device connect more reliably in a weak area, but no specific speed gain or coverage radius is established.
