Samsung documents four taskbar app slots for Galaxy tablets. The exact screens can vary with the tablet model, installed software and service provider, so use the device-specific guidance if a setting or gesture is missing.

How the Galaxy tablet taskbar works
The tablet taskbar is not a separate list that you manage in its own editor. Samsung’s support instructions identify the Home screen favorites bar as the source of the taskbar shortcuts. Any app you place in that bar can appear in the taskbar, and changing the bar changes the taskbar.
This relationship explains why the most reliable place to add, remove or arrange shortcuts is the Home screen. You can start the pinning process from either the Home screen or the Apps screen, but the destination is always the favorites bar near the bottom of Home.

These instructions apply to Galaxy tablets with Samsung’s taskbar feature, including examples Samsung lists such as the Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S9, Tab S10, Tab S11 and Tab A11+. They are not a guarantee that every Galaxy tablet generation or software build presents identical controls.

Pin an app to the taskbar
Pinning means adding an app shortcut to the Home screen favorites bar. The shortcut then becomes one of the taskbar shortcuts when the taskbar is enabled.
- Go to the Home screen. If the app is not already visible, open the Apps screen.
- Touch and hold the app icon, then drag it toward the favorites bar at the bottom of the Home screen.
- Release the icon in the favorites bar. It is now one of the Home favorites and should appear in the taskbar.
If you began on the Apps screen, you may need to move the icon onto a Home screen page first and then into the favorites bar, depending on the tablet’s launcher layout. The important destination is the favorites bar, not an arbitrary position on a Home screen page.
What counts as a successful pin
- The app icon remains in the favorites bar after you release it.
- The same shortcut appears in the taskbar at the bottom of the display.
- The app has not merely been placed on a Home screen page outside the favorites bar; that placement alone does not make it a taskbar shortcut.
Galaxy tablets have a limited number of taskbar app positions. If the bar is full, move or remove an existing favorite before adding another shortcut.

Reorder taskbar apps
Reorder the shortcuts in the Home screen favorites bar rather than looking for a separate taskbar arrangement screen.
- Return to the Home screen.
- Touch and hold a shortcut in the favorites bar.
- Drag it left or right within the bar until it reaches the position you want.
- Release it, then check the taskbar to confirm that the shortcut order changed there as well.
Samsung’s taskbar article explains that the taskbar is supplied by the favorites bar and documents adding and removing shortcuts, but it does not publish a separate, taskbar-specific reorder gesture. The procedure above follows the documented source relationship and the normal Home-screen arrangement behavior.

Do not assume that every Galaxy tablet software build uses the same gesture. First make sure you are dragging an icon inside the favorites bar, not an icon on the page above it. If the icon snaps back or the order does not change:
- Confirm that the tablet model and software version support the same Home-screen layout described in Samsung’s instructions.
- Try arranging the favorites from the Home screen rather than from the taskbar itself.
- Check the tablet’s Home-screen settings or model-specific user guide for a launcher lock or an alternate arrangement control.
- If the behavior remains different, use the model and software version shown under the tablet’s device information when consulting Samsung support.
Because Samsung does not state a universal, independent taskbar-reordering command, a model-specific variation is possible.
Remove an app shortcut from the taskbar
Removing a shortcut from the taskbar removes it from the favorites bar. It does not uninstall the app from the tablet.

Method 1: Drag the shortcut out
- On the Home screen, touch and hold the app in the favorites bar.
- Drag it out of the favorites bar onto the Home screen area.
- Release it outside the bar. The shortcut is no longer a favorite and should disappear from the taskbar.
Depending on the launcher layout, the icon may remain on a regular Home screen page after you move it out. That is expected: the operation changes its favorite status, not the app’s installation.

Method 2: Use the Remove command
- Touch and hold the shortcut in the favorites bar.
- Wait for the shortcut’s pop-up menu to appear.
- Tap Remove.
Choose Remove, not an option that says Uninstall or otherwise refers to deleting the application. Samsung’s documented command removes the shortcut from the favorites bar.
What removal does and does not do

Turn the taskbar on or off
If the favorites bar is correct but no taskbar is visible, check the taskbar switch.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Taskbar.
- Use the switch at the top of the Taskbar screen to turn the feature on or off.
Samsung describes the taskbar as enabled by default in the documented setup. Turning it off hides the taskbar; it does not delete the apps from the Home screen favorites bar. Turn it on again to restore the taskbar shortcuts supplied by that bar.
If “Taskbar” is missing from Settings
Samsung warns that available screens and settings vary by device model and software version, and its broader Galaxy guidance also notes service-provider differences. Use the Settings search field for “Taskbar,” then check Settings > Display manually. If no entry appears, consult instructions for the exact tablet model and installed software rather than applying a menu path from a different Galaxy device.

Galaxy tablet slot limits and the Z Fold difference
Samsung states that Galaxy tablets provide four taskbar app slots. That limit is separate from the number of apps installed on the tablet or the number of icons you can place elsewhere on Home.

Do not use the Z Fold arrangement as a workaround for a tablet that appears to have fewer positions. The eight-slot and recent-app behavior belongs to the foldable-phone guidance, while the tablet limit is four.
Troubleshoot common taskbar problems
The app is on Home but not in the taskbar
A regular Home screen position is not necessarily a favorite. Drag the icon specifically into the favorites bar at the bottom of Home. After releasing it, verify that it stays in that bar. If the bar is already at its tablet limit, remove or move an existing favorite first.
The app appears in the favorites bar but the taskbar is hidden
Open Settings > Display > Taskbar and check the switch. A disabled taskbar can leave the favorites bar intact while hiding the bottom taskbar.

The shortcut order looks wrong
Rearrange the icons in the favorites bar, not on a regular Home screen page. Touch and hold one favorite, drag it to the desired position within the bar and release it. Then check the taskbar. If the position refuses to change, verify the tablet model and software version because Samsung does not promise one reorder gesture for every build.
Touch and hold shows the wrong menu
Make sure you are pressing the shortcut in the favorites bar. The menu can differ when you press an icon on a regular Home screen page or in the Apps screen. For a favorite, Samsung documents a pop-up menu containing Remove.
You removed the wrong shortcut
Removing a shortcut does not uninstall the app. Open the Apps screen, find the application and drag it back into the favorites bar if you want it available in the taskbar again. If the taskbar itself was turned off, enable it through Settings > Display > Taskbar.
The tablet’s menus do not match these steps
Galaxy interfaces change with model, One UI release and service-provider software. Record the model and software version, check for updates offered by the tablet, and use Samsung’s instructions for that exact device. The support page’s tablet examples are not a promise that every older or region-specific model exposes the same Taskbar entry.
A quick way to manage the four slots
For a compact setup, treat the favorites bar as the tablet’s taskbar control panel:
- Keep your four most frequently used apps in the favorites bar.
- Drag a new app into the bar when you want it pinned.
- Drag favorites left or right to put the most important shortcut where your hand reaches it first.
- Move an icon out of the bar or use its touch-and-hold Remove command when you no longer need the shortcut.
- Leave the taskbar switch enabled if you want those favorites visible along the bottom of the screen.
This approach changes shortcuts only. It does not require a keyboard, stylus, replacement part or additional software.
