Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Node 20 is no longer available on GitHub Actions runners. Since September 23, 2026, JavaScript actions run on Node 24, so update each affected action reference to a release whose metadata declares runs.using: node24. Then choose whether to pin that release to an immutable commit SHA or a more convenient, movable version tag.
Why does my GitHub Action say Node 20 is deprecated or unavailable?
GitHub’s final notice says Node 20 is no longer available on runners as of September 23, 2026; JavaScript actions now use Node 24. The temporary ACTIONS_ALLOW_USE_UNSECURE_NODE_VERSION opt-out is no longer available. The notice applies to GitHub.com and GitHub with Data Residency. GitHub says the newest versions of its first-party actions were updated, but that does not establish that every third-party action has been updated. GitHub Changelog: Node 20 is no longer available in GitHub Actions.
This is a release-specific issue: an action’s metadata declares how that action runs. The Node version you install for your project’s build or test commands is a separate setting.
How do I know which version of a GitHub Action supports Node 24?
- Find the action reference. Search your workflow files for entries such as
uses: owner/repo@ref. Also check composite action manifests you maintain, since they can contain their ownuses:references. - Inspect the exact release. In the action’s source repository, open
action.ymloraction.yamlat the same tag or commit used by your workflow. Check the metadata for the action type and, for a JavaScript action, look forruns.using: node24. GitHub’s metadata syntax reference defines the runtime field and the supported values. - Choose a compatible release. If the current release declares
node20, find a newer release and inspect that release’s manifest. Read its release notes and check relevant inputs, outputs, and repository instructions before changing the reference; a runtime update alone does not prove that the new release is functionally interchangeable. - Change the workflow reference. Update
uses:to the compatible release using your chosen pin format. Then run the workflow and review errors and warnings, including on representative self-hosted runner platforms and architectures.
The runs.using check is for JavaScript actions. Metadata may instead identify a composite or Docker action, which does not use that JavaScript runtime field in the same way.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does actions/setup-node update an action’s runtime?
No. An action’s runs.using metadata determines the Node runtime that executes that JavaScript action. actions/setup-node sets up Node for your workflow’s own project commands, such as build and test steps; changing its node-version input does not convert an action release that declares node20 to Node 24. GitHub documents the distinction in its action metadata reference.
Should I pin GitHub Actions to a SHA or a version tag?
| Reference | Stability and security | Update behavior and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full-length commit SHA | GitHub describes a full-length SHA as the safest option and the only way to use an action as an immutable release. Verify that the SHA belongs to the intended upstream repository, not a fork. | Updates require you to deliberately refresh the SHA, giving you a chance to review changes before adopting them. |
Major release tag, such as @vN |
Convenient to read and maintain, but a tag can be moved or deleted, including if a repository is compromised. | GitHub says a specific major version can receive compatible critical fixes and security patches. Keep an update and review process because the tag is not immutable. |
Branch, such as @main |
A moving reference can introduce unexpected behavior or break a workflow as the branch changes. | Tracks active development without a deliberate version update. Use in production only when that moving behavior is intentional. |
GitHub’s secure use reference explains the immutable-release benefit of a full-length SHA and the risk of mutable tags. Its versioned action guidance describes the update trade-offs. The right choice depends on whether your priority is reviewable, fixed inputs or simpler ongoing updates.

For workflow syntax, an action reference takes the form owner/repo@ref; see GitHub’s workflow syntax reference. For an immutable pin, the shape is:
steps:
- uses: owner/action@FULL_40_CHARACTER_COMMIT_SHA
Replace the example with a verified full commit SHA for the intended action repository. Do not copy an unverified placeholder or assume a release tag is itself a SHA.

What should self-hosted runner users check?
GitHub notes that Node 24 is incompatible with macOS 13.4 and earlier and has no official ARM32 support. If you use self-hosted runners on those systems, assess their operating system and architecture before relying on an action release that declares Node 24. GitHub’s notice covers GitHub.com and GitHub with Data Residency; it does not establish a universal transition schedule for GitHub Enterprise Server. GitHub’s Node 20 removal notice.
