Start by opening Start and typing the app’s name. When Windows shows the app, right-click it (or press and hold) and choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar. If the app is already running, right-click its taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar. These are built-in Windows commands; you do not need another utility.
If the app does not appear in search, first verify that it is installed. Then use the Apps folder, written as shell:AppsFolder, to browse installed applications. Microsoft Store and Office have specific visibility issues that require separate checks rather than generic pinning fixes.

Pin an app to Start from search
Microsoft’s taskbar guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. The wording and placement of menu commands can differ slightly between Windows builds, but the workflow is the same: find the installed app, open its context menu, and choose the destination where you want the shortcut.
- Open Start by selecting the Windows logo or pressing the Windows key.
- Type the app’s name. For example, enter the name you normally use to launch it rather than a file name or web address.
- When the app appears in the results, right-click it. On a touchscreen, press and hold the result.
- Choose Pin to Start to add it to the Start menu’s pinned area. If the menu offers Pin to taskbar, choose that to place the shortcut on the taskbar.
- Open Start or look at the taskbar to confirm that the new pin is present.
Windows may show one pin command, both commands, or place a command inside a secondary menu such as More. Use the label that matches the destination you want; do not choose Unpin, which removes an existing shortcut. Microsoft documents the search-based procedure in Customize the Taskbar in Windows.

If the app result is a document or web search
Search can return files, settings, and web results alongside applications. Select the entry identified as an app, then open its context menu. If no application entry appears, do not assume that pinning is broken; follow the installation checks below.
Pin an app that is already open
An app does not have to be visible in Start search for taskbar pinning to work. Launch it by any method you still have available. While its window is open, find the app’s icon on the taskbar, right-click it, and select Pin to taskbar. The icon remains after you close the app, giving you a permanent launch point. This is the shortest route when the app opens normally but is difficult to find in Start.
If the icon is grouped with other windows, right-click the icon representing the running app rather than an empty area of the taskbar. If the context menu already says Unpin from taskbar, the app is pinned and no further action is required. The same taskbar instructions are covered by Microsoft’s Customize the Taskbar in Windows.
Remove a pin without uninstalling the app
Unpinning only removes the shortcut. It does not remove the program or its data.
- For a Start shortcut, open Start, right-click the pinned app, and choose Unpin from Start.
- For a taskbar shortcut, right-click the taskbar icon and choose Unpin from taskbar.
If you later need the shortcut again, repeat the relevant pinning procedure. Unpin commands appear only when the destination already contains a pin.

When Start search cannot find the app
Search failure has two fundamentally different explanations: the program may not be installed, or Windows may have trouble exposing an installed app in the usual list. Check installation first so that you do not spend time repairing a shortcut for software that is not on the computer.
Verify installation in Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps.
- Use the installed-apps list or its search box to look for the program.
If the app is absent, there is nothing for Windows to pin. Install it through the organization’s approved method or the source that supplied it, then repeat the Start search. Microsoft’s installation check is described in How to check if an app or program is installed in Windows.

The Installed apps page tells you whether Windows registers the program. It does not guarantee that every shortcut, tile, or taskbar entry is present. If the program is listed there but Start search still returns nothing, continue with the Apps folder method instead of reinstalling immediately.
Browse every registered app with shell:AppsFolder
Windows provides a special folder that lists installed applications, including entries that are easy to miss in the normal Start layout. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance identifies shell:AppsFolder as a way to browse apps and create a desktop shortcut.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
shell:AppsFolderexactly, including the colon, and press Enter. - Browse the Applications folder for the missing program.
- Right-click the app. Use the available command to create a shortcut, or select the app and use the context menu to reach its pin option when Windows provides one.
If you create a desktop shortcut from this folder, use that shortcut to launch the program and then pin the running app from its taskbar icon. This two-stage route is useful when the app is registered but its normal Start entry is hard to locate. Microsoft’s keyboard and Apps-folder instructions are in Use a screen reader to explore and navigate the Start menu in Windows.

Keyboard and accessibility method
You can perform the same operation without a mouse. Microsoft documents keyboard navigation for the Start menu and the context-menu shortcut Shift+F10.
- Press the Windows key to open Start.
- Move through the pinned list or choose All apps, then navigate to the target app with the arrow keys or by typing its name where search is available.
- With the app selected, press Shift+F10 to open its context menu. On some keyboards, the dedicated Menu key performs the same function.
- Choose More if it appears, then select Pin to taskbar. Use Pin to Start when that command is offered and Start is your intended destination.
Menu names can vary by Windows version and app type. If an option is not shown, press Esc, verify that the correct app entry is selected, and try the Apps folder or the running-app method instead.
Microsoft Store apps: check access before troubleshooting pins
Microsoft Store has a documented access issue that is separate from ordinary Start-menu pinning. If you are specifically trying to find the Store app itself, or an app that was obtained through Store, check the account and device policies that Microsoft identifies.
Personal computer using a local account
Microsoft says the Store app may be unavailable when Windows is signed in with a local account. Check whether Windows is using the Microsoft account expected for Store access, then search Start again. The relevant Microsoft guidance is Can’t find Microsoft Store app.
Work or school computer
An administrator can turn Microsoft Store off on a managed device. If Store is missing on a work or school computer, ask the device administrator whether Store access is allowed. Do not change organizational policies merely to restore a pin; the administrator must decide whether the app may be installed or used.

Do not apply Store checks to every missing app
Account status and Store policy explain Store-specific failures. They do not explain why a conventional desktop program, an independently installed utility, or an already-running app is absent from search. For those programs, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps and shell:AppsFolder first.
Office shortcuts missing in Windows 10
Microsoft documents one narrow Windows 10 exception: when All apps contains more than 512 apps, Office shortcuts may not appear in the All apps list or in search. The figure applies to Office guidance; it is not evidence that every type of software disappears after 512 entries.
If you are using Windows 10 and an Office application is installed but missing from both All apps and search, use the Office-specific instructions at Can’t find Office applications in Windows 10?. Once you can launch the Office app, right-click its taskbar icon and choose Pin to taskbar. Do not use the 512-app condition as a general diagnosis for other applications.
Choose the quickest route for your situation
| What you can currently do | Best route | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| The app appears in Start search | Right-click the result and choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar | Windows exposes the pin command directly from the app entry. |
| The app is open and visible on the taskbar | Right-click its taskbar icon and choose Pin to taskbar | You bypass Start search entirely. |
| The app is listed in Installed apps but not search | Open shell:AppsFolder, locate it, and create a shortcut or launch it |
The Apps folder can expose registered applications that are difficult to find in the normal menu. |
| The app is not listed in Installed apps | Install the app, then search Start again | Windows cannot pin software that is not installed. |
| The missing entry is Microsoft Store | Check Microsoft-account sign-in and administrator restrictions | Microsoft identifies these as Store-specific access conditions. |
| The missing entry is Office on Windows 10 | Check the Office guidance for the more-than-512-app condition | The documented threshold is specific to Office shortcuts. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a shortcut with installation
Pinning creates a convenient launch entry. It cannot install an app, repair a missing installation, or grant permission to use software blocked by an administrator. If the program is not listed under Installed apps, resolve installation first.
Choosing the wrong destination
Pin to Start affects the Start menu; Pin to taskbar affects the taskbar. They are independent locations, so pinning to one does not automatically add the other. If both locations matter, perform both commands when Windows offers them.
Best Value
Using “Unpin” by mistake
Windows changes the command according to the current state. A menu that says Unpin from Start or Unpin from taskbar means the shortcut is already there. Select it only when you intend to remove the pin.
Assuming every Windows build has identical menus
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10, while individual builds and app types can expose commands at different menu levels. Look for More when the direct command is absent, and use the running-app or Apps-folder route when the result menu does not provide a pin command.
Windows 10 support date and what it means here
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The basic pinning workflow remains useful on an existing Windows 10 installation, but Microsoft’s current instructions may show labels or interface details that match newer builds. When a label differs, follow the equivalent command shown on your screen rather than treating a wording difference as a failed procedure. Windows 11 users should use the current Settings and Start labels on their build.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical decision sequence
Use this order when an app is “missing”:
- Search for the app from Start.
- If it appears, pin it from the result’s context menu.
- If it is open, pin it directly from its taskbar icon.
- If search fails, check Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- If it is installed, open
shell:AppsFolderand locate the registered app. - If it is Microsoft Store, check Microsoft-account and administrator access conditions.
- If it is Office on Windows 10, check the Office-specific more-than-512-apps condition.
- After the app launches successfully, pin the running taskbar icon if Start still does not expose a pin command.
This sequence separates the simple shortcut operation from installation, account, policy, and version-specific problems, so each failure is handled by the check that actually applies.
