Pass an explicit revision to the Hugging Face loading or download call. Use a full commit ID, or a release tag that your team treats as immutable, when you need repeatable runs; avoid relying on main because a branch tip can move.
Transformers, huggingface_hub, and repository snapshots all support this pattern. The examples below show how to pin one model load, download individual files, keep several components on one commit, and handle custom model code safely.

What a model revision is—and why pinning matters
A Hugging Face model repository is versioned. Its current branch, release tags, and individual commits are all possible revision references. The revision argument tells the client which repository state to use instead of silently following the default branch.
In the Transformers API, omitting revision uses main. A run that works today can therefore retrieve different configuration, weights, tokenizer files, or Python code after the repository owner pushes another commit. Pinning selects the same repository state deliberately, which is essential for reproducible experiments, production deployments, regression tests, and audit trails.

Hugging Face’s model-sharing documentation summarizes the practical rule: “For reproducibility across runs, pass an explicit commit hash or a tag you treat as fixed.” See Hugging Face’s model-sharing documentation.
Pinning is about the repository state requested by the Hub client. It does not freeze every part of your software environment. A later Transformers release, a different CUDA stack, changed hardware, random seeds, or behavior outside the repository can still affect results. For a serious reproduction, record those variables alongside the repository ID and revision.
Choose the reference that fits your workflow
| Reference | What it identifies | Repeatability | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
Branch, such as main |
The branch tip at the time of resolution | Low: the tip may advance | Exploration when you intentionally want the newest state |
| Tag | A named release reference | High only if the project treats the tag as fixed | Human-readable release pinning |
| Commit ID | One exact repository commit | High | Long-lived experiments, CI, production, and audits |
Pull-request ref, such as refs/pr/3 |
A pull request’s repository reference | Depends on the ref’s lifecycle | Testing a documented pull-request revision |
A commit hash is the least ambiguous choice because it names one commit in one repository. A tag communicates release intent more clearly, but it is only a durable pin if the project does not move or retarget it. A branch is a pointer, not a permanent version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePull-request references are useful for testing a proposed change when the repository documents that reference, but they are not automatically permanent releases. Treat their lifecycle as part of your decision and replace one with a commit ID if the result must remain reproducible after the pull request changes.
Prepare the revision before writing code
- Identify the exact repository. Copy the model ID exactly as shown on its Hugging Face repository page. An adapter, tokenizer, or processor may live in a different repository from the base model.
- Inspect the repository history. Select the commit that contains the configuration and files your application was validated against, or select a project release tag documented as fixed.
- Record the full commit ID when using a hash. The Hub download guide specifically recommends a full-length commit hash for download operations. Documentation examples across interfaces do not establish one universal minimum abbreviation length, so a complete hash avoids ambiguity.
- Write the choice into configuration. Keep the revision beside the model ID in source control, a deployment manifest, or an environment variable. Do not leave a comment that says only “latest.”
Before pinning, check that the selected commit actually contains every file your code expects: configuration, weight files, tokenizer assets, processor data, or custom Python modules. A valid commit can still be the wrong commit for your application if it predates one of those files.
The revision is repository-specific. A commit ID resolved for a base model cannot be reused as though it identified a commit in an adapter repository. Resolve an appropriate revision independently for every repository that supplies files.
Pin a Transformers model load
Transformers passes the selected revision to the Hub when from_pretrained loads a model. The minimal pattern is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
from transformers import AutoModel
model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
'organization-or-user/model-name',
revision='<full-commit-hash-or-fixed-tag>',
)
Replace the model ID with the repository you actually use and copy the revision from that repository’s history. The same argument is available on the auto-model classes appropriate to your task, such as a sequence-classification, causal-language, or vision model class. The API reference documents revision as the selector and main as the default; consult the current Transformers models API reference for the class you are using.
Do not assume that naming a model ID in a lockfile is enough. The ID identifies the repository, while revision identifies the state inside that repository. Store both values together so another person can tell exactly which source was tested.

Pin the tokenizer and processor too
A model load is rarely the only Hub request. Tokenizers, image processors, feature extractors, and configuration files can be loaded in separate calls. Give each call the same explicit revision when those files come from the same repository:
from transformers import AutoConfig, AutoModel, AutoProcessor, AutoTokenizer
model_id = 'organization-or-user/model-name'
revision = '<full-commit-hash-or-fixed-tag>'
config = AutoConfig.from_pretrained(model_id, revision=revision)
tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(model_id, revision=revision)
processor = AutoProcessor.from_pretrained(model_id, revision=revision)
model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
model_id,
config=config,
revision=revision,
)
Passing one value through every call prevents a tokenizer or processor request from following a different branch tip than the model request. If a component is hosted in another repository, use that repository’s own selected revision rather than copying this hash.

A moving branch can advance between the configuration request and the weight request, leaving you with a combination that was never present together in one repository commit. One explicit value per repository makes the intended relationship visible in code review.
Use a fixed revision with custom model code
Some repositories require trust_remote_code=True so Transformers can import model classes stored in the repository. That option executes repository-provided Python code, so inspect the code and its provenance before enabling it. The Transformers loading guide recommends selecting a specific revision as an additional precaution against code changing underneath an application:
from transformers import AutoModel
model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
'organization-or-user/custom-model',
revision='<full-commit-hash>',
trust_remote_code=True,
)
Pinning makes the code version deliberate; it does not prove that the code is safe. Review the selected commit, dependencies, and operational permissions. The official guidance is available in Transformers’ model-loading documentation.
For custom code, the revision protects against an unnoticed change after approval, but it should be treated as one control in a broader review. Keep the exact commit in deployment records and revisit the review when you intentionally upgrade to another commit.
Pin individual files with hf_hub_download
Use hf_hub_download when you need one file rather than an entire repository snapshot. Supply the same revision argument:
from huggingface_hub import hf_hub_download
config_path = hf_hub_download(
repo_id='organization-or-user/model-name',
filename='config.json',
revision='<full-commit-hash>',
)
print(config_path)
The revision can be a branch, tag, commit ID, or a supported reference such as refs/pr/3. For a durable build, prefer a full commit ID or a fixed tag. The Hub download guide describes these reference forms and the full-hash recommendation.
If you download several individual files, do not mix an explicit commit for one file with an unpinned default for another. Either pass the same selected revision to every call or use a snapshot download so the complete request is tied to one repository state.

Download an exact repository snapshot
For a complete set of model files, use snapshot_download with the selected revision:
Recommended Free Tools
from huggingface_hub import snapshot_download
snapshot_path = snapshot_download(
repo_id='organization-or-user/model-name',
revision='<full-commit-hash>',
)
print(snapshot_path)
A snapshot request resolves one repository revision and downloads the files belonging to that state. This is generally safer than making many independent file requests when you need the whole repository. You can then point your application at the resulting local snapshot according to the loading API you use.
Tags and branches remain valid inputs when you intentionally follow their semantics. A branch such as main can resolve to a newer commit on a later invocation; a release tag usually communicates a stable release but should still be checked against the project’s tagging policy.
For ordinary whole-repository use, the single snapshot call also simplifies operational reasoning: the model, tokenizer assets, configuration, and other files are selected from one resolved revision rather than from a sequence of independently resolved branch tips.
Keep multi-file integrations on one commit
Complex applications often fetch configuration, weights, tokenizer assets, processors, and adapters in separate calls. If every call asks for a moving branch, the repository can change between requests and produce a mixed set of files. The Hub cache guidance recommends resolving the revision once for this kind of integration and reusing the resolved revision for all downloads from that repository. Read the guidance in Understand caching on the Hugging Face Hub.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In practice, make the chosen commit an explicit variable and pass it everywhere:
from huggingface_hub import hf_hub_download
repo_id = 'organization-or-user/model-name'
resolved_revision = '<full-commit-hash-resolved-for-this-repository>'
config_path = hf_hub_download(
repo_id=repo_id,
filename='config.json',
revision=resolved_revision,
)
weights_path = hf_hub_download(
repo_id=repo_id,
filename='model.safetensors',
revision=resolved_revision,
)
For an ordinary whole-repository use case, one snapshot_download call already expresses this single-revision intent. If you combine a base model with an adapter or other component from another repository, resolve and record a revision for each repository separately. The same hash string does not carry meaning across repositories.
“Resolve once” is especially important in a long-running job or a deployment with several workers. The goal is not merely to reuse a text variable; it is to ensure every request for that repository refers to the same resolved commit, even if the branch changes after the job begins.
Branches, tags, and commits: practical trade-offs
When a branch is acceptable
Use a branch only when freshness is part of the requirement—for example, an exploratory notebook that should track ongoing development. Expect two runs made at different times to see different files. If a branch is used in a scheduled job, record the resolved commit in the job’s logs so you can identify what actually ran.

When to choose a tag
A maintained release tag is readable in configuration and makes a deployment’s intended release obvious. Confirm that the project treats tags as immutable. If a tag can be moved, it has the same repeatability problem as a branch and should not be the sole control for a regulated or audited build.
When a commit is best
Use a full commit ID for reproducible training, benchmark baselines, production images, incident investigation, and any run that must be recreated months later. The identifier is opaque, so pair it with a human-readable release note or model version in your own documentation.

A repeatable pinning workflow for teams
- Select the repository and revision. Prefer the exact commit validated by your tests. If you choose a tag, verify that the project treats it as fixed.
- Store both identifiers. Record the repository ID and revision together; a commit without its repository is incomplete information.
- Use one configuration value per repository. For example, keep separate values for a base model and an adapter rather than assuming one hash applies to both.
- Pass the value to every loader. Include
revisionon model, tokenizer, processor, configuration, file-download, and snapshot calls that target that repository. - Prefer a snapshot for whole-repository use. It expresses that all files should come from one resolved state and avoids a series of independent moving-branch lookups.
- Log the selection. Include the model ID, revision, library versions, and your application or experiment identifier in run metadata. This makes a future reproduction attempt possible without relying on a mutable branch.
- Update deliberately. To adopt a newer model state, change the recorded revision in a reviewed change, run your validation suite, and deploy that new revision intentionally.
When an update is approved, retain the old repository ID and revision in the release history rather than overwriting it with “latest.” That gives an incident investigator or benchmark maintainer a concrete target for rerunning the previous build.
Example: a pinned application configuration
A small configuration object keeps the model identity and revision visible while allowing the same code to run in development and production:
import os
from transformers import AutoModel, AutoTokenizer
model_id = os.environ['MODEL_REPO_ID']
revision = os.environ['MODEL_REVISION']
tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(
model_id,
revision=revision,
)
model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
model_id,
revision=revision,
)
Set MODEL_REVISION to the complete commit ID (or to a project tag you have verified as fixed) in the deployment configuration. A code review that changes this value is then an explicit model upgrade rather than an accidental change caused by a branch advancing.
If the tokenizer or processor is in another repository, give that component its own environment value and pass its own revision. Keeping names separate prevents a base-model hash from being accidentally applied to an unrelated repository.
What pinning does—and does not—guarantee
Pinning fixes which repository commit the Hub client requests. It does not guarantee identical results if your runtime, Transformers version, CUDA stack, tokenizer behavior outside the repository, random seeds, or hardware changes. Capture those independent variables when strict experiment reproduction matters.
Pinning also does not replace security review. A malicious or flawed commit remains malicious or flawed when addressed by a hash. The benefit is that the code and files under review cannot silently change after you approve that exact commit.

Quick decision checklist
- Do you need the newest development state? If yes, a branch may be appropriate; record the resolved commit for each run.
- Do you need a readable release reference? Use a tag, but confirm it is treated as immutable.
- Do you need durable reproducibility? Use the full commit ID.
- Are you making several requests to one repository? Resolve once and reuse that revision.
- Are components in different repositories? Resolve one revision per repository.
- Are you enabling remote model code? Review it and pin a specific commit as an additional precaution.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the revision argument select?
It selects the branch, tag, commit ID, or supported repository reference that Transformers or huggingface_hub should use. If you omit it in Transformers, the documented default is main.
Best Value
Is a tag as reliable as a commit hash?
Only when the project treats the tag as fixed. A tag is easier to read and can express release intent, but a moved or retargeted tag no longer identifies the earlier state. Use the full commit ID when durability is critical.
Can I use the same commit hash for a base model and an adapter?
No. A commit identifies a state inside one repository. Resolve and record a revision separately for the base-model repository and the adapter repository.
Should I pass revision to the tokenizer and processor?
Yes, when those components come from the same repository. Pass the same selected revision to model, configuration, tokenizer, and processor calls so separate requests cannot resolve different branch tips.
When should I use snapshot_download instead of several file downloads?
Use a snapshot when you need the whole repository. It expresses one revision for the repository and avoids independently resolving many files. For selected files, hf_hub_download is appropriate, but reuse one resolved revision across calls.
Can I pin a pull-request reference such as refs/pr/3?
The Hub download guide documents pull-request references as valid inputs. They are useful for testing a proposed revision, but their lifecycle may change, so use the underlying full commit ID for a long-lived or audited build.
Does pinning make trust_remote_code=True safe?
No. A specific revision prevents the selected repository code from silently changing, but it does not establish that the code is trustworthy. Inspect the commit and its provenance before enabling remote code.
Why is a full commit ID recommended?
The download documentation recommends a full-length hash, and the interfaces do not establish one universal abbreviation length. Using the complete ID avoids ambiguity and differences between APIs or library versions.
The Bottom Line
Pin the repository state explicitly: use a full commit ID for maximum repeatability, or a tag you have verified is fixed. Pass that revision to every model and file request for the repository, resolve separate revisions for separate repositories, and review remote code even when it is pinned.
