How to Pick a Monitor That Won’t Wreck Your Eyes by 5 PM

Choose a monitor you can place directly in front of you, at a distance where the text is easy to read, with its top edge at or below eye level. Then reduce reflections and balance screen brightness with the room. A monitor’s specs or blue-light feature cannot guarantee that your eyes will feel comfortable at the end of the day; fit, lighting, breaks and individual vision all matter.

Start with fit, not a feature list

When comparing monitors, focus first on whether the screen can sit in a comfortable position on your desk. You should be able to center it in front of you, set a usable height and distance, read without leaning forward, and avoid distracting reflections.

  • Position: Can the monitor be placed directly in front of your usual seated position?
  • Height: Can you set the top line of the screen at or below eye level?
  • Distance and legibility: Can you sit comfortably and read the text at that distance? Increase text size rather than moving closer or leaning in.
  • Reflections: Can you arrange the screen and workspace to limit glare from windows and lights?

There is no established basis here for ranking resolution, panel type, refresh rate, curvature or a marketing label as a way to prevent eye discomfort. If the supplied stand and desk cannot put the display in a comfortable position, an adjustable stand or monitor arm may help.

Set a comfortable viewing distance and height

U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidance gives 20–40 inches (50–100 cm) as a general preferred viewing distance, with at least 20 inches in its quick tips. Treat this as a starting range, not a universal rule: screen size, text size, posture and individual preference affect what feels comfortable. OSHA notes that a screen that is too far away may prompt leaning, while one that is too close can increase focusing demands. OSHA monitor guidance

Keep the monitor centered in front of you and the top line at or below eye level. Sit upright with support rather than reaching your head toward the display. A 1998 field study of 22 participants found preferred viewing distances between 60 and 100 cm and gaze angles ranging from horizontal to 16 degrees downward; preferences varied, and participants reported more visual strain when made to work closer than their preferred distance. The study supports adjusting the position to the person, not prescribing one exact setup for everyone. Field study abstract

Control glare and balance the lighting

Before buying a filter, try changing the screen’s position relative to windows and lights. Adjust room lighting and screen contrast so the display is easy to see without a bright reflection or an uncomfortable mismatch with the surroundings. EyeWiki recommends limiting glare and balancing screen contrast with room lighting. American Academy of Ophthalmology EyeWiki guidance

A 2019 study found higher questionnaire symptom scores in a glare environment and poorer visual performance in its glossy-display group. Under that study’s conditions, uniform supplementary lighting performed better than dim or uneven supplementary lighting. These findings support addressing avoidable glare and lighting imbalance; they do not establish that a particular filter is necessary. Study abstract

An anti-glare filter is a conditional option if reflections remain distracting after you have tried repositioning the display or light source. EyeWiki notes that such filters can reduce reflections and glare but may not reduce asthenopia, or eye strain.

Do blue-light features prevent eye strain?

Do not choose a monitor on the promise that a blue-light setting or filter will prevent eye strain. A 2023 Cochrane review included 17 trials with 619 participants across six countries and found that blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses may not reduce short-term computer-related eye strain compared with non-filtering lenses. Evidence for visual acuity and sleep was limited or inconclusive, and the trials did not establish conclusions for several other outcomes, including macular health. The review assessed spectacles, so its conclusion should not be stretched into a claim about every monitor setting or every possible biological effect of blue light. Cochrane review

Build in breaks, but keep the evidence in perspective

A monitor setup cannot replace breaks. In a 2022 study, 29 people with symptoms used webcam-based reminders based on the 20-20-20 rule for two weeks. Reported digital eye-strain and dry-eye symptoms decreased while reminders were active, but the improvement was not maintained one week after they stopped. Measured ocular-surface and tear-film parameters did not change. This small, short-term study suggests reminders may help some people manage symptoms; it does not show that breaks changed those measured eye-health indicators. Study abstract

When to seek individual eye-care advice

Persistent or disruptive symptoms deserve an eye-care assessment rather than an assumption that the monitor is the cause. The American Optometric Association notes that some people may need glasses specifically for computer viewing distance. An assessment can help determine whether your prescription or another individual factor is involved. AOA digital eye strain guidance
