How to Photograph Wildlife With a Phone: Camera Settings and Field Tips

You can take compelling wildlife photos with a phone by cleaning the lens, tapping to focus, adjusting exposure, and keeping the phone steady. For distant animals, include more of the habitat or use compatible binoculars or a spotting scope with a phone adapter; heavy digital zoom cannot restore detail. Let wildlife behave naturally and follow the rules for the place you are photographing.

Prepare your phone before you start shooting

  • Clean the camera lens. Smudges reduce contrast and can make a sharp scene look hazy. Carry a microfiber cloth or lens wipes, as National Geographic recommends for smartphone field photography.
  • Open the camera app in advance. Wildlife may move before you are ready. If your camera has a grid, turn it on to help level the horizon and place the animal off-center when that suits the composition.
  • Learn your camera’s controls. Features and labels vary by phone, model, and operating system. Apple’s iPhone camera-control guide describes controls for supported iPhones; it is not a universal set of instructions for Android or every iPhone version.

Which settings should you use?

Start with focus and exposure. Tap the animal—or the part of it you want sharp—on the screen. Then check whether the animal looks too dark against a bright sky or too bright against a dark background. Adjust exposure with your phone’s on-screen control if available, and review the image before taking more.

There is no single exposure adjustment that suits every animal and lighting condition. A small change may help reveal a dark subject or preserve bright feather detail; use the preview to judge the result rather than relying on a fixed value. On supported iPhones, you can adjust exposure near the focus area and use AE/AF Lock to hold focus and exposure. The available controls depend on the device and software.

If your camera app offers manual controls

Some phones or third-party camera apps let you choose shutter speed and ISO. A faster shutter can help freeze a moving bird, while a higher ISO can help maintain exposure in dim light. The tradeoff is that greater sensitivity can make an image noisier. These controls are not available in every camera app, and no one shutter-speed or ISO setting works for every phone, light level, and animal. Audubon’s bird-photography guidance explains these general tradeoffs.

MIAO LAB 28X HD Telephoto Lens for iPhone/Samsung/Android | HD Telephoto Camera Lens, Universal Smartphone Compatibility
  • Upgraded 28x Telephoto Lens – Wider View & Easier Framing: Designed for everyday users, this 28x telephoto lens delivers a wider field of view than most 28x lenses, making it easier to find and frame distant subjects. Whether you're at a concert, a sports game, or just exploring nature, you'll get crisp, high-resolution close-ups without the hassle of perfect alignment.
  • Advanced Optical Performance with Reduced Edge Darkening: Features a breakthrough light path design for an ultra-wide view and excellent light intake. The field-of-view ring helps reduce edge darkening, so you get a cleaner image with fewer dark corners (results may vary by phone model). High resolution and true color reproduction significantly enhance your mobile photography.
  • Stable Long-Distance Capture & Monocular Function: With 28x magnification, capture clear and steady shots of distant subjects. The lens can also be used as a monocular telescope for extended observation—perfect for birdwatching, wildlife, or scenic views.
  • Wide Compatibility & Versatile Use: Perfect for sports events, concerts, bird watching, wildlife observation, and travel. Compatible with iPhone, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and most other smartphones.
  • Portable & User-Friendly: Crafted with high-quality glass and a durable yet lightweight body. The universal clip attaches securely to your phone, and the compact design fits easily in a pocket or bag—ideal for travel and outdoor adventures.

Keep the phone steady and capture brief behavior

  • Hold the phone with both hands and brace your arms against a stable surface if practical.
  • Try not to shift the phone as you press the shutter.
  • For a quick movement, such as a wingbeat, use burst mode if your phone offers it. You can choose the sharpest frame afterward; check your camera’s controls because the way to start a burst varies by model.

Audubon’s smartphone photography guidance recommends steady handling, burst capture for action, and adjusting exposure before shooting.

Choose zoom and composition with the phone’s limits in mind

Use a separate optical camera lens if your phone has one and it suits the framing. Do not assume every zoom level is optical: digital zoom enlarges a crop, reducing fine detail. Cropping later may be preferable to extreme digital zoom, but it cannot recover detail the camera did not capture.

When an animal is far away, make an environmental portrait instead of trying to fill the frame. Include habitat such as water, branches, or landscape so the image shows where the animal is and what it is doing. A phone may not resolve a sharp close-up of distant wildlife, but it can make an effective, well-exposed image of the animal in its setting. National Geographic’s safari guidance discusses this limitation.

When to consider digiscoping

If you already have binoculars or a spotting scope, you can try photographing through an eyepiece with your phone. A compatible smartphone spotting-scope adapter can help align the phone and optics, but compatibility depends on the specific phone and equipment. Setup takes more time, alignment can be fiddly, and dark corners may appear in the frame. An adapter adds reach; it does not guarantee a sharp image. See Audubon’s guide to photographing through a birding scope for this optional approach.

Approach Useful for Tradeoffs
Phone alone, using its standard or optical camera options Nearby wildlife, quick observations, and environmental portraits Portable and quick to use, but fine detail depends on distance, light, and the phone’s lens and sensor.
Phone’s built-in telephoto camera Framing a subject when the phone has a suitable optical camera Availability and results vary by device; distinguish optical camera selection from digital enlargement.
Phone aligned with binoculars or a spotting scope Distant birds when you already have compatible optics Can provide more reach, but takes longer to set up and align; compatibility and dark-corner issues are possible.

Change your viewpoint without disturbing the animal

A lower or higher viewpoint can give a photograph a different feel. Choose an angle only if you can reach it without approaching or alarming the animal. Do not crawl toward wildlife, leave an established path, enter restricted habitat, or disturb a nest to improve a frame. A wider picture that shows the setting is often more compelling—and safer—than an unsafe close-up.

Put wildlife welfare ahead of the photograph

Let the animal continue its normal behavior. Do not call, chase, bait, or otherwise try to attract its attention, and do not damage or alter habitat to clear a view. Take extra care around breeding animals and learn species-specific signs of stress. Rules on distance and permits differ by location and species, so check the requirements for the place you are visiting.
