To photograph the Moon and Jupiter in one image, frame both with a phone’s main camera or a camera lens wide enough for their separation, steady the device, focus on the Moon and lower exposure until lunar surface detail is visible. Jupiter will usually appear as a bright point in this wide composition, not a detailed disk. The exact framing and time depend on your location and the date, so check a current sky calendar for your observing place.

Choose the right kind of photo

A single wide frame is the practical choice when your goal is to show the Moon and Jupiter together. It balances a bright Moon against a much dimmer planet and sky; preserving lunar detail usually means accepting Jupiter as a point of light. Adding a foreground such as a building or tree can give the image context, but makes exposure harder to balance. NASA’s guidance on photographing the Moon explains this contrast challenge.

A telescope-and-phone setup is a different approach: it magnifies a view through an eyepiece, which can be useful for close-ups but may not fit both objects in the same frame. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide covers phone imaging and telescope-eyepiece methods.

Before you set up

  • Check a current sky calendar for your date and location to learn when and where the pair will be visible. There is no one framing or observing time that works everywhere.
  • Choose a safe spot with an unobstructed view in the relevant direction. Twilight can make the contrast between the Moon and sky easier for a phone to handle.
  • Bring a tripod or another secure support if you have one. A ledge or stable surface can work too; a phone timer or remote shutter helps avoid movement when taking the picture.

Photograph them with a phone

  1. Start with the main or wide camera. Frame both objects with room around them. If they are close together, try a modest optical telephoto setting if your phone has one. Digital zoom crops the image and does not create extra planetary detail; NASA recommends experimenting with the phone’s actual optical capabilities in its conjunction photography guide.
  2. Steady the phone. Place it on a tripod, clamp or secure surface and use the timer or remote shutter if available. NASA’s Lunar Photography Guide recommends a steady support; the Canadian Space Agency’s phone Moon photography demonstration also shows the value of added stability.
  3. Focus on the Moon and reduce exposure. Tap the Moon to focus, then lower the exposure or brightness control until it looks gray and surface features show instead of a featureless white disk. Turn off flash. If your camera app offers manual controls, start with low ISO and a faster shutter, then review and adjust; no single setting is reliable for every phone, sky or scene.
  4. Take several frames and review them. Check that the Moon’s surface is visible, the image is sharp and both objects are in frame. Adjust exposure or framing and try again. If the timing allows, compare results in twilight, when the scene’s contrast may be less extreme.

On supported Pixel phones, Google’s low-light photography help describes using steady support and a distant-focus option. Those instructions are specific to supported Pixel devices; other phones may use different controls or offer no equivalent setting.

Photograph them with a DSLR or mirrorless camera

  1. Choose a focal length for the separation. A wider lens makes it easier to include both objects and a foreground; a longer lens makes them larger but narrows the framing and makes camera shake more noticeable. This is a framing trade-off, not a fixed focal-length recommendation: check the pair’s separation for your date and location.
  2. Mount the camera securely and focus. Use a tripod or other firm support. Focus manually near infinity, then magnify the view on the camera display to check it. A wide aperture can help record Jupiter and stars as points, particularly when the sky is dark.
  3. Begin with a short exposure and inspect the result. Check for blur and for lost detail in the Moon’s bright areas, adjusting exposure as needed. NASA’s conjunction guide says a handheld exposure shorter than 1/4 second can still produce pictures; with a tripod, exposures of a few seconds may keep planets point-like before Earth’s rotation smears them. These are examples from that guide, not universal settings: the suitable duration depends on focal length and composition.
  4. Set priorities for the frame. If lunar surface detail matters most, expose for the Moon and let Jupiter remain a point. A separate Jupiter close-up can use a longer focal length or telescope optics, but may not include the Moon.

Use a telescope only if you want magnification

If you already own a telescope, a phone adapter can hold the phone camera at the eyepiece. Focus the telescope visually first, align the phone camera and keep the setup steady. This magnifies the view and changes the framing problem; it may show the Moon or a planet close up rather than both together. NASA’s smartphone guide and illustrated smartphone astrophotography guide explain eyepiece-based methods.

Which setup should you use?

Approach Best suited to Stability and effort Control and detail
Phone main or wide camera An easy context shot with both objects in one frame A steady surface or tripod helps; a timer can reduce shake Simple exposure controls vary by phone; Jupiter will usually be a point
DSLR or mirrorless camera with a suitable lens More control over framing and exposure for a conjunction composition A tripod is useful, especially with longer focal lengths or longer exposures Manual focus, shutter and ISO control; expose for the Moon if its surface detail is the priority
Telescope with phone adapter A magnified lunar or planetary view Requires a telescope, adapter and careful alignment Can provide magnification, but may not fit both objects in one frame

NASA’s conjunction photography guidance covers phone and DSLR approaches, while its smartphone astrophotography guide covers telescope-assisted phone imaging.
