A tripod helps, but a stable rock or other improvised support can work too. The exact controls and results depend on your iPhone, software, app, and sky conditions.
Set up a steady shot
Low-light photos are especially vulnerable to movement. Apple recommends a tripod for more detailed Night mode photos, while NASA says a small phone tripod is ideal and that a stable improvised support—such as a rock or block of wood—can work in a pinch. Frame the sky before starting the exposure, and make sure the phone will not shift during capture. Apple Support · NASA

Use Night mode and the controls your iPhone provides
On supported iPhone models, Night mode turns on automatically in low light. Apple’s current iPhone guide says you can open Camera Controls, choose Night Mode, and select from the exposure options available on your device. The selection is saved for the next Night mode photo. Apple does not specify one exposure time that applies to every model, so use the options shown on your own phone rather than assuming a particular duration is available.
Reduce vibration during capture
Hold the iPhone still for the entire exposure. Apple says movement may be indicated by crosshairs on screen. If your Camera app offers a timer, use it to avoid shaking the phone when you press the shutter; NASA notes that many camera apps provide a short delay. With a tripod or firm support, start the timer and step back without touching the phone until the capture finishes.

Focus, test, and adjust
Focus where possible
NASA’s general smartphone guidance is to tap a distant bright star or streetlight, then check whether the camera app offers a way to fine-tune and lock focus. iPhone focus behavior and available controls vary by model, mode, and app, so use the controls actually shown on your device.
Take a test exposure
Make a test photo and inspect it before taking more. NASA recommends starting with an exposure of a few seconds where the camera permits it, then adjusting based on the result. This is a starting point, not a universal iPhone setting: Apple’s Night mode options vary by device and its guide does not prescribe one duration.

Choose the simplest camera setup that fits
| Setup | Stability and convenience | Controls and best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Camera app with Night mode | Convenient; a tripod or stable support helps keep the phone still. | Night mode is automatic on supported models, with the exposure options available on that device. A sensible first choice for a straightforward star photo. |
| Third-party camera app | Requires installing and learning another app; support and behavior depend on the app and device. | May provide dedicated night-sky modes or manual controls. Consider one if you specifically want those controls; it is not required for ordinary Night mode photography. |
| Tripod or improvised support | A tripod offers a purpose-built way to keep the phone still. A stable rock or block of wood can work when one is unavailable. | Supports either camera-app option; it does not itself add exposure or focus controls. |
For example, the U.S. App Store listing for NightCap Camera: Long Exposure describes Stars, Star Trails, Meteors, and ISS modes, plus manual exposure, ISO, focus, and white-balance controls. The listing displayed version 10.1.1 when inspected; features and availability can change. NASA recommends practicing with your phone before deciding whether to upgrade equipment.

Review and process the image
After capture, check whether the stars are visible and whether the frame is sharp enough for your purpose. NASA describes processing as an important part of astrophotography and says it can bring out additional detail. Editing is optional: make adjustments only as needed, and avoid treating any particular result as guaranteed across different phones and skies.
