The most useful UFO recording is not necessarily the closest-looking clip. It is an original, high-resolution file that keeps the surrounding scene, preserves camera metadata, and is accompanied by a careful record of where, when and how it was made. Start recording promptly, keep the object in frame without endangering yourself, capture the wider context before tightening the view, and preserve the untouched file separately from anything you edit or upload.
“UFO” or “UAP” means that the observer has not identified what was seen. A photograph or video can document an event without proving the object’s identity, distance, size or speed. Treat the recording as evidence to preserve and describe accurately, not as a conclusion about what the object must be.

What makes a UFO recording useful
Analysts need more than a bright point or unusual shape. They need to understand the scene, the observer’s position, the camera and the conditions under which the sensor recorded light. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) identifies higher-resolution footage, a small field of view when an object is close, camera specifications and associated metadata as potentially useful. A tight frame can reveal detail, but it does not by itself establish how far away the object is or how large it is.

The practical lesson is to capture context and technical details at the same time as the subject.

- Technical information: Retain the device model, camera used, recording mode, exposure information and embedded metadata.
- Observation notes: Record the time, location, direction of view, duration, weather and what you directly saw.
- Independent views: Ask other witnesses to record from their own positions rather than copying one person’s framing.
These measures improve the record; they do not guarantee that a short clip can identify an object or support a reliable calculation of its motion.
Stay safe before you start filming
Do not step into traffic, climb an unsafe structure, stare at a screen while driving, or neglect an urgent responsibility to obtain better footage. Keep awareness of people, vehicles, aircraft, weather and your surroundings. If the event occurs while you are piloting an aircraft, follow aviation procedures and report through the appropriate aviation channel rather than handling a phone as a substitute for flight safety.
Use the device already available. Searching for an accessory, changing apps repeatedly or walking toward the object can cost the only useful moments. A stable position and a clear view are more valuable than a risky attempt to get closer.
Step-by-step recording workflow
1. Start with the device at hand
Begin recording as soon as it is safe. If the camera application allows it, let the first seconds show the surroundings before you tighten the framing. This establishes the horizon, nearby lights and the relationship between the object and the scene. Avoid stopping and restarting unless necessary; separate clips make timing and continuity harder to establish.
Use the highest practical resolution that your device can sustain without filling storage or causing the camera to stop. The official guidance does not specify one universal phone mode, frame rate or resolution for every device. Do not assume that a setting marketed as “enhanced,” “night,” or “AI” is preferable; note the setting you actually used.
2. Hold a wide view long enough to establish context
Keep some fixed landmarks in view. A wide shot can show whether apparent motion is relative to a building, treeline or cloud layer. It also helps document the observer’s viewing direction and the scene’s lighting. If the object is already tiny, widening the frame further may make it disappear, so balance context with visibility rather than applying a rigid rule.
When practical, say the direction aloud—such as north-west or “above the eastern roofline”—and identify a landmark. If you do not know the compass direction, describe the reference you can verify later. Do not guess the object’s distance or altitude while filming.

3. Tighten the frame carefully, without losing the original view
After capturing context, move or zoom only as much as needed to keep the object visible. Optical framing or a closer position can preserve more real detail than aggressive digital zoom, but the official sources do not recommend a particular lens, tripod or phone accessory. Digital zoom enlarges recorded pixels; it does not create information the sensor never captured.
If you change zoom, lens, camera, focus or exposure mode, state the change aloud or write it down afterward. A visible jump in brightness or scale may otherwise be mistaken for a change in the object. Keep the wider recording whenever possible, even if you also make a closer clip.
4. Keep the object in frame without chasing it
Use both the object and fixed references to guide movement. Rapid panning, autofocus hunting, optical image stabilization and rolling-shutter effects can create apparent motion or distort a point of light. Move smoothly and avoid repeatedly tapping the screen, which can change focus or exposure.
Do not apply sharpening, stabilization, color filters or other enhancements while the only copy is being recorded. Those processes may be useful for a clearly labeled derivative, but they can alter edges, noise patterns or compression artifacts that someone assessing the original would need to see.

5. Capture a still only when it will not interrupt the video
A still photograph can preserve a single frame at a different resolution or with different metadata, but taking it may pause recording, change the lens or make you lose the subject. Make a still only if you can do so without interrupting a useful continuous clip. Keep both files and record which device and camera produced each one.
6. Narrate observations, not conclusions
Describe visible events: “the light moved left relative to the roof,” “it dimmed for about two seconds,” or “a second light appeared below it.” Separate those statements from interpretations such as “it accelerated,” “it was enormous,” or “it was a spacecraft.” Apparent acceleration can result from camera movement, changing focus, a moving observer or an unknown distance.
If you speak while recording, include the local time if known, the place where you are standing, the direction you are facing and when the object first appeared. Do not read out personal information that you do not want embedded in a file you may later share.

Choose framing deliberately: context, detail or both
| Approach | What it preserves | What it cannot establish by itself | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide contextual view | Horizon, landmarks, lighting, surrounding traffic or aircraft and the observer’s relationship to the scene | Fine surface detail on a distant or small object | Begin here when safe, especially before changing framing |
| Tighter view or closer framing | More pixels on the object and potentially more visible detail when it is genuinely close | True distance, physical size or identity without reliable geometry and sensor information | Use after preserving context, while keeping the object in frame |
| Continuous original video | Timing, transitions, camera movement and changes in exposure or focus | A guaranteed measurement of speed or trajectory | Retain as the primary record |
| Edited, stabilized or compressed copy | A convenient version for messaging or publication | Unaltered pixel data and possibly some metadata | Share only as a labeled derivative alongside the original |
AARO warns that compression introduces artifacts and says uncompressed camera data accompanied by camera specifications is more useful. That does not mean every phone must produce a technically uncompressed file; it means you should preserve the highest-quality original your device created and avoid replacing it with a social-media export.

Write down details while the event is fresh. Phone metadata can be incomplete, stripped during transfer or changed by an editing application, so a separate note provides a second record. A digital note, voice memo or pocket notebook can work; the important point is to preserve the information and keep it associated with the original file.
Time and duration
- Record the date and the local start and end times.
- Include the time zone or the clock source if known.
- Estimate the total duration and note gaps caused by changing devices or files.
Location and viewing direction
- Save the observer’s location as a map pin or coordinates when practical.
- Note the direction of view and elevation above the horizon in ordinary terms.
- Identify fixed landmarks visible in the frame.
Weather and visibility
- Describe cloud cover, haze, precipitation, wind and visibility as you experienced them.
- List nearby lights, reflections, windows, searchlights, fireworks or aircraft that could appear in the frame.
- Note whether the scene was viewed through glass, a screen, a telescope or another optical surface.
Device and camera details
- Write down the device make and model and the camera or sensor used.
- Record the recording mode, resolution, frame rate if displayed, lens or zoom changes and exposure or focus changes.
- Preserve the file’s embedded metadata, including GPS coordinates and timestamps when the device stored them.
NASA lists sensor type, manufacturer, noise characteristics, acquisition time, sensitivity, storage characteristics, sensor location and exposure among useful metadata. Consumer phones may not expose every field, but recording what is available makes the limits of the file clear.
Direct observation and witnesses
- Describe what you saw with your eyes separately from what appears in the recording.
- List other witnesses and where each person stood.
- Note whether they made independent recordings and the approximate times of those recordings.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) guidance for federal UAP records illustrates useful identifying fields such as title, creation date, originator, location, file type and running time. That guidance applies to federal agencies managing records for the UAP Records Collection; civilian witnesses do not have to use a federal transfer format. Its value here is as a reminder to label your own files consistently.
Preserve the original file
Make the untouched recording your master copy. Transfer it without opening it in an editor that automatically re-encodes the file, and keep a second backup in a separate location. Do not trim the beginning, remove audio, change the frame rate, add text, stabilize, sharpen, color-correct or compress the only copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you need a shareable version, create a derivative and name it so the relationship is obvious—for example, include “trimmed” or “annotated” in the filename. Retain the original file, its sidecar metadata if the camera created one, and your contemporaneous notes. A platform that strips metadata or recompresses video should never be treated as the archive.
Record how files were transferred and when. If a phone created several segments, preserve all segments in their original order rather than keeping only the most dramatic portion. Do not assume that a screenshot of a video frame contains the same information as the source video.

Ask for independent recordings
When other people are present, ask them to record from where they already stand. Do not have everyone crowd behind one phone or copy the same zoom level. Different positions can show whether movement is shared across the scene or produced by one camera’s motion.
NASA’s report notes that near-simultaneous smartphone observations can potentially be collated. Associated metadata may help analysts estimate an object’s location, velocity or size through multiple viewpoints. This is a possible analytical use, not a promise that ordinary phone videos will yield those measurements. Each witness should preserve the original file, note their own location and time, and avoid synchronizing stories before writing independent observations.

A camera records light reaching a sensor. The result is shaped by exposure, focus, movement, lens design, sensor noise, stabilization, compression and viewing conditions. A small point of light may be a distant object, a nearby object out of focus, a reflection, an aircraft or another source; the clip alone may not distinguish among those possibilities.
Do not present apparent size as physical size unless distance and field of view are known. Do not present apparent speed as measured speed unless distance, camera motion, timing and sensor characteristics are established. A handheld camera’s pan can make a stationary light appear to move, while a distant moving object can appear almost motionless.
NASA emphasizes that even reports accompanied by photographs or video can lack the information required for systematic analysis. A recording is therefore valuable as documentation while remaining limited evidence about identity or physical properties. Avoid claims that a clip is “proof” solely because it is sharp, unusual or difficult to explain at first glance.
Common mistakes and how to recover
The clip is compressed by a messaging app
Ask the sender for the original file through a transfer method that does not re-encode it. Keep the compressed copy as a derivative, but do not delete it if it documents how the file was circulated.

The beginning was missed
Write down when you first noticed the event, when recording began and what happened before the camera was activated. A partial clip can still be useful when its missing interval is clearly described.

The object leaves the frame
Keep recording the scene for a few seconds if safe, then describe where it went relative to fixed landmarks. Do not invent a trajectory from the last visible frame.
Metadata is missing
Preserve the file anyway and supply a written record of time, location, device, direction and conditions. Mark which details are estimates and which came directly from the device.
The camera changed exposure or focus
Note the moment and the visible effect. A sudden brightness or size change may be a camera adjustment rather than a change in the object.
Only an edited clip remains
Label it as edited, describe the changes and state that the original is unavailable. Do not imply that its metadata or pixel values are intact.
Where to report the sighting
Pilots and air traffic control
The Federal Aviation Administration says it documents pilot reports made to air traffic control and may share them with the UAP Task Force when supporting information, such as radar data, corroborates a report. Pilots should use established aviation reporting and safety procedures; a public video upload is not a substitute for an operational report.
AARO’s official submission form
AARO’s “Submit a Report” page is for current or former U.S. government employees, service members or contractors who have firsthand knowledge of government UAP programs or activities. The page instructs users not to submit general sightings or information outside what the form requests. It is not a general civilian UFO-sighting portal.
Ordinary civilian sightings
The official sources do not establish one universal reporting destination for civilians in every country or jurisdiction. Verify current local instructions before sending personal information or original files to an organization. Share a clearly labeled copy when possible and keep your master file and notes in your possession.
A field checklist you can save
- Stay safe and maintain awareness of traffic, aircraft, weather and other immediate hazards.
- Start recording promptly with the device you have.
- Show the wider scene and fixed landmarks before tightening the frame when practical.
- Keep the object in view; move smoothly and avoid relying on digital enhancement.
- Say or note any zoom, lens, focus, exposure or camera changes.
- Record time, time zone, location, direction, duration and weather.
- Write down the device, camera, mode and available metadata.
- Describe observations separately from interpretations.
- Ask other witnesses to record independently from their own positions.
- Preserve the original file and metadata; label every edited or compressed copy.
- Use a reporting route appropriate to your role and location.
Following this workflow will not turn an ambiguous clip into a definitive identification. It will give later reviewers the best chance to understand what the camera recorded, what the witness experienced and which questions remain unanswered.
