You can take clear, expressive photos of LEGO builds with a phone and household materials. Start with a simple background, choose an angle that shows the model’s defining features, and adjust the light before buying equipment. Then steady the camera if needed and check focus and framing before you share.
Make a simple place to photograph the build
Move distracting objects out of the frame and set the model on a surface that gives it a clear visual boundary. A sheet of paper can serve as both the ground and backdrop: fold it so one part lies under the build and the other rises behind it. The LEGO Group’s 2023 LEGO Life magazine activity uses this kind of paper setup and encourages experimenting with lights.

There is no universally best backdrop color established by that activity. Choose a background that makes the build easy to distinguish, and avoid patterns or clutter that compete with its details.

Choose a viewpoint that explains the build
Take a few test frames from different heights rather than assuming the first angle is the best. Ask what makes this particular model recognizable: its footprint, height, silhouette, cockpit, interior, or another detail. Frame the view to reveal those features.

Overhead for layout
A view from above can make a miniature scene’s layout easier to understand. It is useful when the arrangement of buildings, paths, or other elements matters more than the model’s height.
Three-quarter view for depth
A view from above and to one side can show both the front and a side, helping a model read as a three-dimensional object. The LEGO Group gives roughly 45 degrees as an example for photographing planes and spaceships; treat it as a starting point, not a fixed rule.

Lower viewpoints for height or drama
For a tall build, try lowering the phone toward the model’s level so its height is more apparent. Check the screen for distracting background objects and make small framing changes until the model stands out.

Before changing camera settings or buying a light, move the model or change the available light’s direction. The LEGO Group’s family-build guide describes lighting as important and suggests experimenting with creative angles, including light from below, or using spotlights to draw attention to details.

- For a readable overall view: Try available light and check that the important parts of the build are visible.
- For stronger shadows: Move a light to one side or try a more dramatic direction. Watch that shadows do not hide a defining feature.
- For a small detail: Direct a light toward the feature you want viewers to notice, then check the whole frame for unwanted glare or dark areas.
Make one change at a time and compare test frames on the phone. The cited LEGO guidance recommends creative experimentation but does not prescribe exposure settings.
Keep the camera steady when blur or framing is a problem
If handheld shots look blurred or the framing shifts between attempts, rest the phone on a firm surface or use a small holder or tripod. This is a practical still-photo adaptation of advice in the LEGO Group’s stop-motion guide, where animator Jon Rolph says: “You can build a nice holder for your camera. That’s a good way of keeping it still.” The guide is about stop motion, where keeping the camera still is especially important; it is not a dedicated still-photography tutorial.

For a quick test, support the phone, tap the area of the build you want in focus if your camera app allows it, and take another frame. Compare the result at full size on screen rather than relying only on the tiny preview.

- Check that the defining features are in frame and the model is not cut off unintentionally.
- Look closely at the subject to see whether its details appear in focus.
- Check the edges and background for clutter, reflections, or distracting objects.
- If the picture is unclear, change one thing—viewpoint, light direction, or camera support—and take another frame.

Household materials and existing light are enough to begin. Optional gear can solve a specific problem, but it is not a prerequisite.
