You can make compelling coastal photographs without going near an unstable cliff: shoot from an open, designated viewpoint or marked path, stay behind barriers, and obey local warnings and closures. Cliffs can fail without warning, and the cliff base can be dangerous too. Check the official access alerts, weather and tide before you go; if a safe viewpoint does not give you the framing you want, change the shot or choose another location.
Why cliff edges and bases are unsafe places to shoot
A cliff can look solid while parts of it are unstable, and collapse or rockfall cannot reliably be predicted. HM Coastguard says cliffs can be more unstable than they appear and that rockslides or falls can happen at any time. The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority also describes cliff failure as dependent on local factors. Neither appearance nor a photograph can establish that a particular edge is safe.

The risk is not limited to the top. Falling rock and landslides can threaten people below cliffs, including on beaches. A composition that requires standing at the edge, beneath a cliff face, or beyond a fence is not worth pursuing. As HM Coastguard’s 2019 notice put it, “no selfie or photograph is worth risking your life for.”
Choose a safe viewpoint before planning the composition
Start with a designated lookout or established path that is open and set back from the cliff. Follow the current route, signs, fences and closure notices from the authority responsible for that coast. Do not cross a barrier, step off a marked path, or use an unofficial track to gain a clearer angle.

When comparing locations, consider whether the viewpoint is designated and open, whether reaching it means walking near an edge or below a cliff, and whether tides, weather or access restrictions affect the route. If the safe viewpoint does not provide the shot you imagined, alter the composition or move to another lawful viewpoint rather than closing the distance.
Check weather, tides, alerts and your way out
- Check official access information. Before travelling, review the responsible park or coast authority’s alerts, closures and route guidance. Conditions and access status can change.
- Check local weather and tide information. Know whether conditions could affect the route or make the shore unsafe.
- Identify exit points and allow time to leave. An incoming tide can cut off a coastal route. Do not rely on being able to retreat by the same beach or path later.
- Keep watching the sea. California State Parks advises visitors at the bluffs covered by its beach-safety guidance to time beach visits around low tide to preserve space between the bluffs and waves. That is local advice, not a guarantee of safety elsewhere.
Follow local setback instructions, not a universal distance
There is no universal safe distance from a cliff. The appropriate setback depends on the site, and no distance you estimate from a photograph can certify an edge or cliff base as safe. Follow local signs and directions instead of applying another coast’s number.

Point Reyes National Seashore advises visitors to stay several meters from the base of cliffs as well as away from clifftop edges. These are distinct local instructions for different settings, not interchangeable measurements.

If you have a safe, open viewpoint, a telephoto lens or telephoto zoom can be used as a general photography option to frame distant features. It is optional: the coastal-safety authorities cited here do not recommend a particular lens, focal length or camera technique. Do not use equipment as a reason to approach an edge or enter a closed area.

Tell someone your route and expected return time, and carry a charged phone. Mobile service may be absent on remote walks; NSW National Parks recommends considering a personal locator beacon (PLB) as an added precaution for those walks and notes that free hire is available at certain locations. A PLB does not make a closed, unstable or unsafe route acceptable.
