Photograph an architecture model with bright, even light, a simple background, and a steady, level camera. Take one clear overall view, then add detail or process views only when they explain something the main image cannot. Photograph flat drawings straight on. Before exporting, check the destination program’s current portfolio rules: file type, page or slide count, and size limits vary.
Prepare the model and background
Start with a clean model and a plain background that contrasts enough to define its outline without competing for attention. A neutral background is a practical choice; avoid clutter that makes the model harder to read. The University of Sheffield advises applicants to use a neutral background, while Carleton University cautions against distracting backgrounds. Sheffield portfolio guidance and Carleton’s portfolio package offer course-specific advice, not universal admissions rules.

Light the model so its details remain visible
Use bright, even light and inspect the model for hard shadows, glare, and color shifts. Sheffield recommends bright natural or artificial light without flash and checking that the photograph preserves the work’s color and detail. Carleton likewise advises avoiding glare and shadows. The aim is legibility, not dramatic lighting.

Simple setup: even ambient light
Begin with available natural or artificial light. Move the model or light source if a shadow obscures an important edge or a reflective surface catches glare. Avoid using flash directly on the model.

Indoor setup: key light and fill
If ambient light is uneven, the University of Waterloo Fine Arts guide describes placing a key light above and to one side, then using a more distant fill light to soften its shadows. Tracing paper or vellum between the light and artwork can diffuse harsh light. These are optional techniques; the guide does not require a particular lamp or diffusion product. Waterloo’s January 2023 artwork-photography guide provides the setup details.
Stabilize and align the camera
A tripod is useful optional support for keeping the camera steady and level, particularly when photographing three-dimensional work from repeatable angles. Waterloo’s guide recommends a tripod for three-dimensional artwork and describes leveling the camera. Check that the model’s important edges are not distorted by an oblique camera angle.

For a physical model
Keep the camera level where possible and avoid tilting it sharply down or up. A tripod can make it easier to hold the framing steady across the overall and detail views.

Place the camera at right angles to the work so its edges remain square rather than appearing trapezoidal. Sheffield recommends photographing two-dimensional work at right angles; Waterloo also describes aligning the camera and checking for keystoning.

Choose views that explain the project
Take a principal view that communicates the model’s overall form. Add another angle or close-up only when it reveals something meaningful, such as construction, material, spatial relationships, or a design decision. Carleton advises considering multiple views and details for three-dimensional work and allows a finished-model image to sit alongside process photographs, sketches, details, and other views.
- Overall view: show the model’s complete form and how its parts relate.
- Alternate view: include one when the principal angle hides an important side or spatial relationship.
- Detail view: use it to clarify a material, joint, structural feature, or other element that is difficult to see at portfolio scale.
- Process view: include it when it helps explain how the project developed, rather than merely repeating the final view.
Carleton’s Fall 2027 Bachelor of Architectural Studies package calls for four to eight portfolio pieces; that range applies to that program and cycle, not to architecture portfolios generally. Check Carleton’s package and the requirements for your own application.

Review photographs before assembling the portfolio
Inspect each image at approximately the size a reviewer will see it in the final submission. Sheffield and Carleton’s image-quality guidance supports checking these points:

- The model is in focus and its important edges are visible.
- Shadows or glare do not hide features.
- Perspective does not make the model look unintentionally distorted.
- Colors and material details remain credible.
- The background is unobtrusive and the image clearly communicates the work.
Follow the destination program’s file rules
There is no universal architecture-portfolio file specification. Published requirements differ by school, program, and application cycle. These examples illustrate the variation; they are not interchangeable recommendations.

Troubleshooting common photo problems
- The model blends into the background: use a simpler background with more contrast against the model’s outline.
- Hard shadows hide details: even out the light or try a fill light to soften the key light’s shadows.
- Reflective surfaces show glare: change the light angle or diffuse the light; check the image again before taking the remaining views.
- The model looks skewed: level the camera and adjust its position. For flat work, photograph straight on, at right angles to the surface.
- The project is hard to understand from one image: add a deliberate alternate view, detail, or process image that answers a specific visual question.
- The portfolio file is rejected or exceeds a limit: recheck the intended program’s current rules for format, page or slide count, and file size, then export to those requirements.
