To change what appears in Google Discover, use three card-level signals together: follow subjects you want, tap Like on stories you value, and use More to hide unwanted topics or publishers. Then review Manage your interests and the account’s recommendation settings. The exact labels can differ by device, language, country or app version, but these controls give you the most direct way to reshape the feed.
Start in the surface where you actually read Discover. The Google app, Google.com on a supported mobile device and Chrome’s Android New Tab feed expose related but separate controls. Make sure you are signed in if you want the Interests page, followed topics and likes associated with your Google Account.

What Google Discover is—and where its controls live
Discover is Google’s personalized stream of articles, videos and other updates. It appears in the Google app and on Google.com on supported mobile devices; some phones also expose it by swiping from the home screen. Discover is not the same as a search-results page: you do not have to enter a query for cards to appear.
The feed can use signals from your device, other Google products and your Google Account. Depending on your settings, those signals can include Search Services History, app information, Personalized Recommendations, location settings, topics you follow, cards you like, stories you save and feedback that marks a topic or publisher as unwanted. Location-based updates may use your saved home location or an estimate such as your IP address when a home location is unavailable.

Google also records Discover activity such as cards shown, cards viewed or customized, topics marked Not interested, devices used and channels visited. You can adjust several of these inputs, but no single switch guarantees a completely chronological or advertisement-free feed.
Discover controls are usually attached to each card through the three-dot or More menu. The Interests area provides a broader account view: you can inspect followed topics, liked stories, saved items and collections, and undo some previous choices. Because Google updates interfaces gradually, two people may see different menu wording even when they are using the same general feature.
Follow topics to request more coverage
Following is the clearest instruction you can give Discover when you want recurring updates about a subject. You must be signed in to a Google Account to use the Interests area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAndroid: open your followed topics
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings, then Personalization.
- Tap Manage your interests.
- Open the Following tab to see subjects you already follow.
To stop following something, open that topic and tap Following so it changes to the unfollowed state. Google also documents a route from an individual Discover card: open the card’s More menu and use the topic-following option when it is offered.
When a card names a subject you care about, following it from that card can be faster than searching through settings. After following, return to Manage your interests to confirm that the subject appears in Following. This list is useful for finding old interests that continue to influence the feed.
iPhone and iPad: manage Following
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Manage your interests.
- Open Following.
On iOS, intermediate labels can differ from Android. If you do not see an identical path, open the profile menu and look for Manage your interests; that page is the central place for followed subjects, likes, saved items and collections.
Choose useful topics instead of overly broad ones
A specific interest usually gives Discover a clearer signal than a broad category. For example, following a particular sport, league, technology area or hobby can be more useful than following a general “news” category. Follow several related subjects, then use card feedback to remove sources or angles you do not want. Following does not guarantee that every card will be about the subject or that updates will appear at a fixed frequency.
Recommended Free Tools
Review your list when your interests change. Unfollowing an outdated topic prevents it from remaining an explicit preference, while the Not interested control is better for a subject you never want in the feed. You can keep a broad topic followed and block one publisher if you want variety without seeing that particular source.
Hide an unwanted topic or publisher
When a card is irrelevant, repetitive or from a source you do not want, give feedback directly on that card rather than waiting for the feed to learn slowly.
Hide a topic
- On the Discover card, tap More.
- Choose Not interested in the topic.
This suppresses the topic represented by the option. The wording includes the topic name, so check that it matches what you intend to remove before confirming. A broad topic choice can affect more cards than a single article, so use it when you genuinely want less of that subject.

Hide a publisher
- Tap More on a card from the publisher.
- Choose Don’t show content from this source.
Publisher blocking is useful when you still want a subject but not coverage from one particular source. Topic and source controls may not be available in every language or region. Use the labels actually shown in your app.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These two options are not interchangeable. Hiding a topic can reduce coverage from many publishers, while hiding a source leaves other coverage of that topic eligible to appear. Read the bracketed topic or source name carefully so you do not remove more than intended.
Restore a topic or source
If you hid something by mistake, return to the Google app’s interests settings and open Not interested. Find the topic or source and choose Remove or Unhide, depending on the interface. In a browser, Google documents a similar route through Google.com settings: open Discover, choose Manage interests, then Not interested and remove the relevant entry. The exact button name can vary by surface.
Like cards when you want more related stories
A Like or Favorite is a positive preference signal. Tap it on a card you genuinely want to see more often. Google says this can change how frequently related topics appear in Discover.
Your liked stories can be found in Discover Likes; the Interests page also provides a Liked tab. Google says the stories you like are visible only to you, although selections may be shared anonymously with publishers. A like is not a subscription to the publisher and does not guarantee that every future card will match the same angle.
Use likes selectively. If you like every card simply to clear notifications or save a story for later, the signal becomes less useful. Use Save or a collection for reading-later purposes when that option is available, and reserve Like for subjects or formats you would like Discover to show more frequently.
Think of a like as a preference about the card you are viewing, not a permanent rule. A story can be liked because of its topic, format or timing, while later cards about the same subject may differ. If you only want to keep a link, save it instead of liking it so the two actions do not communicate the same intent.
Understand what each control does
These controls solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one can make the feed less useful, so use the narrowest signal that fits the situation.
| Control | What it tells Discover | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Follow/Following | You want ongoing updates about a topic. | Request more coverage of a subject you actively track. |
| Like/Favorite | You prefer this card’s topic or treatment. | Increase the chance of related topics appearing. |
| Not interested in the topic | You do not want this subject in the feed. | Suppress a topic while leaving other publishers available. |
| Don’t show content from this source | You do not want this publisher’s cards. | Remove one source without hiding the entire subject. |
| Personalized Recommendations | You want broader recommendation personalization based on account signals. | Change account-level recommendation behavior, not just one topic. |
For example, follow a league for regular updates, like a particularly useful analysis, hide a celebrity topic you never want, and block a publisher whose style you dislike. Using all four signals is more precise than repeatedly liking or hiding cards at random.
Review history and Personalized Recommendations
Topic and card feedback work at the feed level. Account settings control whether Google can use broader saved activity for recommendations, and Google is gradually updating these settings. Consequently, two accounts—or the same account on different dates—may show different menu names.

When personalization is enabled
Google’s Android guidance describes using Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations so saved activity can inform recommendations. If these options are available in your account, review what activity is being saved and whether location-based suggestions are useful to you.
Look at these settings as separate from the Follow and Like buttons. Following and likes express explicit interests; history, app information and location can provide broader context. You can therefore see local or timely cards even when you have not followed the underlying topic directly.
When Personalized Recommendations is turned off
Google’s newer setting is rolling out gradually. When it is off, Search services do not personalize recommendations in the same broad way. Google nevertheless says some tailoring based on current context and information you save can remain. Turning off this one control therefore does not promise a completely generic feed.

If your menu does not match
- Check the current privacy or Search-services controls for the signed-in account rather than relying on an older screenshot.
- Update the Google app if an update is available, then reopen it.
- Confirm that you are editing the account whose Discover feed you are viewing.
- Remember that employer- or school-managed accounts may have administrator restrictions.
Do not assume that a missing switch means personalization is broken. Google says updated settings are being introduced gradually, and availability can depend on language, country or region, device and account.
Manage Discover in Chrome’s New Tab page
Chrome’s Discover feed has a separate management path from the Google app. On Android:
- Open a new tab in Chrome.
- Tap More.
- Choose Customize new tab page.
- Open Discover feed, then Interests.
- Use Following or Not Interested to manage subjects.
For an individual Chrome card, tap More to provide topic or publisher feedback. Changes made in Chrome may not expose exactly the same controls as the Google app, so manage each surface where you use it.
If you read Discover in both places, check both interfaces when diagnosing an unexpected card. Chrome’s New Tab page has its own customization route, while the Google app’s profile menu leads to its Interests page.
A practical tuning routine for a cleaner feed
Use this sequence when you want to improve Discover without changing every account setting at once.
- Start with your highest-priority subjects. Open Manage your interests and follow the topics you would actively seek out.
- Remove obvious noise. On irrelevant cards, use Not interested in the topic; use the publisher option when the subject is useful but the source is not.
- Reward strong matches. Like cards that represent the topics and style you want more often.
- Check the result over several feed visits. Discover recommendations can change as new activity and current context are recorded; one swipe session is not a reliable test.
- Correct mistakes. Review Not interested and Following lists, remove accidental hides and unfollow subjects that no longer matter.
- Adjust account-level personalization only if needed. If the feed remains too tailored or too generic, inspect Search-services history and Personalized Recommendations, keeping in mind that some contextual tailoring can remain.
Make one kind of change at a time when possible. For instance, first remove a publisher, then review the feed before hiding the whole topic. This makes it easier to tell which control solved the problem and reduces accidental over-filtering.
Privacy, ads and limits you should expect
Discover cannot be made ad-free
Google’s Discover settings state that Discover cannot be used without ads. On an ad card, open More, choose Why am I seeing this ad?, and use the available option to turn off ads from that advertiser. You can also review Google’s Ads Settings. This removes or limits that advertiser’s ads; it does not remove advertising from Discover altogether.

Personalization uses more than the buttons on a card
Discover can combine card feedback with information from your device, other Google products and account settings. Examples documented by Google include Search Services History, app information, Personalized Recommendations and location settings. Saved home location—or an estimated location such as an IP address when home location is unavailable—can influence location-based updates.

Reviewing account privacy controls can help you understand which of these signals are being retained and used.
Availability is not universal
Discover itself, topic controls and recommendation settings can vary by country, language, device, account and app version. A feature described in Google’s help documentation may not appear in your current interface. Follow the labels available on your device, and do not assume that a missing option indicates a fault.

“Manage your interests” is missing
Make sure the Google app is installed and that you are signed in. Open the profile menu and look under Settings. On Android, the path may include Personalization; on iPhone or iPad, it may lead directly to Manage your interests. If the option still does not appear, account, language, region or administrator restrictions may apply.
A hidden topic keeps returning
Check whether you hid a publisher instead of the topic, or vice versa. Review both the Not interested list and your followed topics. A related but differently named subject can also produce similar cards, so hide the specific topic shown in the card’s More menu.

Use explicit feedback on the card rather than relying only on a Like elsewhere. Also inspect followed topics and remove interests that are too broad. Changes are recommendations, not a strict keyword filter, so occasional related cards can still appear.
Cards are too local or too personal
Review location settings, Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations. Turning off broad recommendation personalization may reduce account-based tailoring, but Google says current context and saved information can still influence some results.
Chrome and the Google app look different
They are separate Discover surfaces with their own management paths. Apply feedback in Chrome’s New Tab feed and in the Google app where appropriate, rather than expecting one interface to expose every control.
You want to undo an accidental Like
Open Discover Likes or the Interests page’s Liked tab to review liked stories. Remove or reverse the selection using the control shown in your current interface, then use Save if your goal was simply to keep the story for later.

There are no cards or no feedback options
Discover availability and individual controls vary by device, account, country and language. Confirm that you are viewing a supported Discover surface and that the Google app is current. A managed work or school account can also restrict services or settings.
Best Value
What a well-tuned Discover feed can—and cannot—do
Following establishes the subjects you want to track; likes reinforce individual matches; topic and publisher controls remove recurring sources of noise. Account settings determine how much broader activity can shape recommendations, while location and current context can still affect what appears. This combination lets you steer the feed substantially, but it does not turn Discover into a fixed list, a chronological subscription reader or an ad-free service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get more stories about a specific topic in Google Discover?
Open the Google app, go to your profile menu and choose Manage your interests, then add the subject in Following. You can also follow a topic from a Discover card when that option appears. Like individual cards that are especially relevant to reinforce the preference.
How do I stop seeing a topic?
On a card about that subject, tap More and choose Not interested in the topic. To undo it later, open Manage your interests, choose Not interested, and select Remove or Unhide.
Can I block one publisher without blocking the whole subject?
Yes. On the publisher’s card, open More and choose Don’t show content from this source. Other publishers can still appear for the same topic.
Does liking a Discover card make similar stories appear more often?
Google says a Like or Favorite can change how often related topics appear. Likes are private to your account, although selections may be shared anonymously with publishers.
How do I personalize Discover on an iPhone?
In the Google app, tap your profile picture or initial, open Settings, choose Manage your interests, and open Following. Labels can differ from Android.
Is Chrome’s Discover feed managed in the Google app?
Chrome on Android has its own path: open a New Tab, tap More, choose Customize new tab page, then Discover feed and Interests. Use Following or Not Interested there.
Will turning off Personalized Recommendations remove all personalization?
No. Google says that when the updated setting is off, Search services do not personalize recommendations in the same broad way, but some tailoring based on current context and information you save can remain.
Can I remove ads from Discover?
Discover cannot be used without ads. On an ad, use More and Why am I seeing this ad? to turn off ads from that advertiser, or review Ads Settings. Advertising as a whole will still remain.
The Bottom Line
For more of the subjects you care about, follow specific topics, like genuinely useful cards, and hide unwanted topics or publishers from each card’s More menu. Review Manage your interests regularly, and adjust Personalized Recommendations or history only with the understanding that location, current context and saved information may still influence Discover. The controls differ across the Google app, Google.com and Chrome, and none creates a fixed or ad-free feed.
